We've just returned from a wonderful night away at the Fairfax Arms, and we're already planning our next visit!
We booked it fairly last minute and thought it looked nice, but it exceeded our expectations at every step.
The pub itself is stunning and looks really impressive on the approach. The interior has been sympathetically modernised whilst retaining a lot of original features.
The room was clean and comfortable and far bigger than appears on the pictures. There were lots of mod cons and thoughtful touches throughout the room, and we both slept like babies on the king size bed!
Whilst we didn't eat in the evening as we'd already booked elsewhere, based on how nice the specials looked and how good the breakfast was, we'll definitely be eating here next time.
The whole stay was underpinned by the friendly and attentive staff who were helpful and approachable.
Went for Sunday lunch, have been a dozen times and it is consistently a delicious meal with a great menu and range of Specials.
Very professional and friendly staff and set in one of the prettiest villages. Fully recommended in every way.
Cannot recommend this place enough. Food was absolutely delicious. Service and accommodation was absolutely spot on, and the location is delightful. Nice, quiet, and beautiful location in the heart of North Yorkshire. Definitely can't wait to go back and stay again
Beautiful pub restaurant. We visited twice during our holiday, once on a Friday and then the following Sunday.
4 stars as the Sunday service let it down.
Friday - despite an initial mix up with our reservation time, we had excellent service from waitresses, food was perfect and the atmosphere was great. We ate at 5.30pm. We were brought an appetiser which was unexpected and delicious.
The steak and ale pie my husband had was amazing. I had the duck, which didn't come pink as stated on the menu, but was tasty nonetheless. The kids meals were very generous and my kids ate up every bit.
Sunday however was very disappointing. We ate slightly earlier at 4.30pm. service was very slow, the food was mediocre and they had run out of a lot of things. Now, the food running out I get as it was Easter Sunday and the waitress told us they'd had a very busy lunch, but the standard of the food just wasn't the same as the Friday. I ordered the "trio of sausages" from the specials board, which I thought was a trio of differently flavoured sausages, but turned out to be plain sausage and mash with black pudding mixed in (which was a bit bland).
My son ordered the kids fish and chips which did not look or even taste the same as when he ordered it on the Friday. He couldn't eat it.
The beef Sunday roast was very chewy. The desserts were almost gone but what we did have was ok, but not great.
It really brought down what we thought of the place I'm afraid as we were blown away on the Friday.
Superb family room booked...in fact two adjoining rooms plus shared bathroom. Great decor, super king comfy bed plus two big singled in 2nd room. Coffee machine and goodies plus sparling water much appreciated....village is lovely with an epic miniature railway 100m away.
We had supper in the oak conservatory. A great menu...all local sourced and plenty of it...clean plates all round.Theakstons on tap plus large ine wine menu. Breakfast was better than any we have had out....
Just visited for lunch - what a find, lovely decor, friendly service & superb food. I had a burger which was delicious, plentiful & meaty! My husband had a steak, very well cooked. We shall certainly be back. The location is also very impressive.
Fab pub in a charming village . Lovely room , attentive friendly staff. We loved it. It was a long overdue break and was just perfect. The food was fantastic.
Food, service and ambience are lovely but the standard of guest rooms is not of the same level. Room 4 is small, and the en suite is poor, shower cubicle is miniscule and you need to be a contortionist to open and close the window! No double glazing and the room door is so poorly fitting you can hear everything in the hall way.
The food is of a high quality and plenty of it. Staff are lovely and friendly. The decor and furniture of the pub and dining room is superb. Just need to do the same for the rooms.
Lovely restaurant and good food. Very friendly and helpful staff. The bathroom was very small and the shower was in need of update. Very comfy bed but no mirror in the room.
Comfortable rooms, great staff, good food, free parking.
Off the main roads, but then it's quiet.
And it's also a lovely Inn, with charming decorations, even in unusual places.
Gorgeous food and lovely staff! We have been a couple of times and love it every time.
Had a family meal for my birthday. Food was lovely and staff very friendly and welcoming
We enjoyed a cup of coffee here; the environment is so welcoming and beautiful! I would highly recommend visiting.
Visited the restaurant on a Friday evening. Seemed very busy but they managed to seat us even though we didn't book, which was greatly appreciated. The food was delicious, especially the praline cheesecake. Service was fantastic; felt looked after, without feeling constantly checked in on. Would definitely eat there again.
Just passing through while out for the day. The Fairfax was a nice find.
Beautiful location, didn't eat but what others had looked really good, especially the burgers. Staff very polite and attentive. Great menus with plenty of choice and a specials board.
#doncasterhypnotherapy clinic day out.
We go to the Fairfax Arms ones every 2/3 month's as it a nice drive from home
And there's a number of way's there and back
And each time we stop off we have a spot of lunch so over the years we had a goodly number so I can say the food is always well prepared and of good quality
They have been times when I or my wife have not seen anything on the menu that we fancy but that's not a there fault just personal choice
We will keep going as we know we'll always get good food at a fair rate
Really lovely place. Atmospheric with great attention to detail. Rooms are spacious and well decorated. The staff are friendly and accommodating. Took our little dog and he was made very welcome. Would definitely recommend it for a relaxing break away.
Stopped off for a drink on the way home from Filey.
The Fairfax is a lovely pub set in a wonderful location with a small stream running by.
The place was busy serving Sunday lunch. We did not eat but the food being served looked appetising and portions generous.
Definitely worth a visit.
I can’t express how much I love this place. Location, food, service is always fantastic. Located in the beautiful village of Gilling East. What more could you want from a local pub. Mick, Sarah, Mica and team do an amazing job, we are so lucky to have the Fax on our doorstep. I would highly recommend anyone to stay, dine or drink!
