We held our wedding party recently at The Central. From start to finish Gavin, Scott and all the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much of a hassle for them and what it cost us was excellent value for money (a similar pub venue in Newcastle wanted to charge us considerably more!).
I'd certainly recommend the pub if anyone wants to have a wedding party, or any other party for that matter, in an informal setting. We used the venue on the middle floor, for a band and DJ, and the top floor with roof terrace for drinks and food. The sun was shining all afternoon so the roof terrace was perfect (one thing the venue won't be able to guarantee is good weather though!).
And if you have no intention of using The Central for a party, it's just a great boozer with nice beers and good food.
Proper bar, proper atmosphere serving a canny selection of beers. The roof terrace on a sunny day is a great way to drink beer and while away a bit time and even watch a few trains go past.
Beautiful building, great beer, friendly staff, amazing food and fantastic atmosphere. An absolute gem and a must for any ale drinker.
When my friend came up from the Midlands, I knew there were two places I really wanted to take her. One of them was The Central Bar.
So, we went for Sunday lunch. They do three choices of roast and a good number of veggie/vegan options. And there is a good deal on starters and puddings if you want to do the full whack.
We had the beef and pork. They came with two sorts of potatoes (mashed potato and roasties), three veg and tasty gravy. The pork also had sage and onion stuffing and fabulous crackling. Mustard, horseradish and apple sauce were available.
The Central Bar is all about the beer and spirits. There are a fascinating array of draught beers, some delivered by barman power alone. And the range of spirits are really enviable.
We both had s Bathtub gin and slimline tonic. It came in huge bowl glasses with a beautifully vintage looking bottle of tonic.
This pub looks like what immediately comes to mind when someone says 'pub'. All wood, brass and glass.
It's just down the hill from Gateshead Metro Station and an easy ten minute walk Central Station over the High Level Bridge.
And the perfect review came from my friend?
'It's the sort of pub you can just lose track of time and spend days in.'
Thank you for letting choirs from Leeds, Manchester and Stockton come in on Saturday afternoon. 60-70 people all drinking and singing in outside the pub.
We had our engagement party here last night and it was brilliant. The staff were so friendly and really could not do enough to make sure we had a wonderful night. The roof terrace was great, and the rooms were just the right size and the food was fantastic. Thanks guys, we will be back....alot.
I really like this pub a lot.Lots of choices of real ale, terrific food, a traditional bar with framed posters of the north east's industrial and railway heritage.
And to top it all, a very cosy rooftop terrace
Ten out of ten.
Top beer and friednly staff. Totally recommend it!
I popped in because of OXJAM festival, first time there but wished I hadn't brought the car as the beer was great as was the music. Nice traditional pub Couldn't believe they had a roof terrace which was great in the sun shine, it had an indoor part as well which was very comfortable. Enjoyed my few hours and will return to try the food and beer on public transport.
Had our wedding reception upstairs, staff were very accommodation and couldn't do enough to help make our day perfect. Chef provided a great selection of meat, veggie and vegan food which went down very well. Also used to be our local when we lived in ochre yards and we love the beer.
Great range of beers, canny food, interesting historic building and cool roof terrace.
It's the first time I've been to The Central, amazing selection of Real Ales also a great selection of Gins, "I'll be back"...great friendly staff too
First time in the Central but it won't be the last. Great atmosphere, staff were really helpful and the beer was excellent.
Fab cosy pub driven past on the bus I don't know how many times. Finally went in last night with a group of friends. Brilliant gin selection!
We entered this pub for the history itself called the coffin for its shape or wedge.
It is really bright and clean, the manager welcomed us and invited us to go up to the terrace and it was a brilliant idea. We enjoyed the sunshine and the trains passing by our side. Beautiful views not to Newcastle but some aged buildings opposite.
Very recommended.
A must visit. Great history, architecture not to forget the ales, beers and locally sourced bar food. Can't wait to go back
Really enjoyed my first ever visit here. Friendly people, great pub, great interior, great beers.
Good selection of beers and pies with friendly staff.
Went to see Abdoujaparov play and had an awesome night.
Can't beat a bit of pie & punk!
Great selection of beers, spirits, ciders and non alcoholic options, a great menu of food and there was even free stew on when we visited! Also this place has an amazing roof terrace!
Good beer selection. Excellent pies. A traditional pub on 3 floors, including a roof garden. It has been renovated in a traditional style, but the occasional modern twist. This is one of those bars that you shouldn't miss if you are in Newcastle or surrounding areas.
The pub is run by some nice young gentlemen, who are more than happy to help you picking a beer from their big (and very diverse) selection of brews! You will find none of the Heineken / Guinness brews there, but just local and independent Ales, Ciders and Lagers at great prices! The pub is very clean and also it has a super nice rooftop terrasse for relaxing in the sun (if it's out), a pool table and even a third room with a stage, where you would find some concerts on the weekend.
Honestly the nicest pub of Newcastle (even though it's in gateshead :P) and a great place for anyone wanting to try some alternative brews!
fun times in here. bit tight but that's the point. Great vibes, and good prices. haven't tried their food
The friendliest and most helpful staff we encountered on our pub crawl of Newcastle/Gateshead. Based off a few vague statements from my wife, they were able to pluck a beer that she loved. I must confess it was an excellent choice. The interior was like a dive bar, but not as shabby - loved it.
Excellent range of beers, quirky shaped building with a classic pub interior, lots of quiet corners if you want it, or a friendly open bar area if you want a chat.
