We visited last Tuesday and was greeted by Simon behind the bar. He originally warned us off that they were so busy due to a Wedding party that they wouldn't be able to accommodate us for food. We chose to grab a drink anyway to decide were to go instead. As Simon delivered our drinks and told us that he'd negotiated with the chef and that they could squeeze us in! He recommended some dishes, I went for the Sirloin and the food arrived so quickly. Super happy with the service, everyone was attentive and friendly and Simon went beyond for us, thank you!
We've been pleased with our quick stay at the Dog House. We're Americans visiting and needed a one night stop over that accommodated children. We arrived early and enjoyed drinks in the pub while our rooms were being cleaned. Later we returned for a lovely dinner, a special menu featuring Sunday roasts and Yorkshire puddings. Service and food were excellent.
We had three rooms for our group. We had requested a first floor room for one person in our party, but the toilet wasn't working and they had to be moved to the second floor to a larger room. The beds were comfortable and I was pleasantly surprised to find two, thick pillows. The rooms were well stocked with tea, coffee, and biscuits. The rooms were a little sparse-a comfortable sitting chair would have been a nice addition-and a little worn in places, but somewhat to be expected in such an old building.
For breakfast the next morning we headed down to the hotel restaurant again. Andrew :-) was a great server that made us feel welcomed and took the time out to chat with us and my daughter. James the cook made an excellent breakfast, the English breakfast and bacon especially stood out. Overall, the Dog House was a great send off before the next leg of our journey.
We stayed for 2 nights this week and we had a lovely welcome. Our room was comfortable and had kettle with tea and coffee etc we had an iron and ironing board which was much appreciated. The bed was super comfortable and the room was clean. The bar staff were friendly as are the restaurant staff. The food we had was amazing and we particularly enjoyed breakfast. Our server Andrew explained everything to us and was really friendly and professional. He was always available if anyone needed anything. My Husband had the full English breakfast and helped himself to a few cups if English breakfast tea.I had coffee and apple juice. The continental breakfast food consisted of cereal ,yogurt fruit and a variety of pastries and preserves. I ordered avocado and poached eggs on toast and I have to say they were the best poached eggs ever. We had the same the next day. The food came out in good time and was hot and very filling. So thank you James (chef) and Andrew (server) for the best start to our day. The hotel is on a country road that can get busy at times but even with our bedroom window open it didn't disturb is We visited Abingdon and Oxford during our stay and the hotel was in an ideal location for where we had planned to visit. As a couple on the other side of 60 I would recommend this hotel to couples young or older.
