amazing restrant in a quaint village, brilliant vegan and vegetarian options as well. staff were attentive and friendly and the owner was delightful. I'd I had any criticism it would be that the seasoning on the frito was slightly off (no salt) otherwise food was amazing.
I was very excited to try this restaurant and I wasn’t disappointed!
Customer service is second to none - attentive and personable. I appreciate how accommodating they were for my little baby. They gave me a table that gave me plenty of room to have my buggy by me. There was plenty of room and we weren’t squashed! We weren’t crammed in some dark corner (as has been our experience with other restaurants). And they offered to warm anything up if needed for the baby.
Food was delicious and high quality. Restaurant was beautiful. It was a wonderful dining experience.
Don’t leave without trying the tiramisu. Best tiramisu ever. The restaurant was kind enough to put them in boxes for us so we could take them home.
Boring but practical details:
The restaurant is a stone’s throw away from the car park (£1 for two hours). Service is 12.5% but we added more (well deserved). The changing table is in the ladies toilet but the way the toilets are set up, the toilets can only be occupied by one person (and baby) at a time. So this can be used by Dad. I love that the changing table isn’t over the loo. It also has shelves. And there’s a hook on the door if you need to hang anything. You could wheel a pushchair in if you needed to.
A really pleasant Saturday lunch - birthday celebration. Well balanced Italian menu. To be clear its not a pizzeria but proper Italian style restaurant. We got there beforehand and had a cocktail in their separate wine bar. Enjoyed a variety of antipasti before a shared pasta course. Then two of our party shared steak (at £77 for two the most expensive item on the menu) and one had scallops - all really good and followed by deserts. Bottle of wine. All well cooked, presented and served. Our cost was £80 per head including 12.5 % discretionery service charge included on the bill. We did push the boat out and could have paid less without compromising overall experience. Would definitely return for a special lunch or evening meal.
Watson & Walpole is a collaboration between David & Ruth Watson and chef Rob Walpole. Step inside for an authentic Italian restaurant. The service was great with the team in hand to explain any of the authentic Italian dishes on offer.
The menu changes frequently to include seasonal dishes and special Italian dishes. Expect regional dishes that are a touch different to pizza and pasta.
We had a great meal and look forward to dining again soon.
This is a very good restaurant. The food is very good and the staff are friendly.
The acoustic is very good and, although the restaurant was full, we could easily carry on our conversation without straining to hear each other. For me, that is a real plus!
Unfortunately my espresso disappointed....big time! Perhaps it's only in Italy that good coffee is guaranteed.
Absolutely faultless every single time. The best restaurant in Suffolk hands down. I love that they send / change the menu every month. Every time we've eaten at Watson and Walpole it has exceeded expectations. The service is always fantastic. But the food, the food is absolutely incredible, always!
Their real shining star is the service. What an inviting and friendly place with really passionate and knowledgeable staff. Bustling from opening time and fresh, tasty food. Noticed them serving tiramisu table side too! What a gem!
This is a restaurant that truly loves food, loves people and celebrates Italy. I don't think that I can compare it to any other Italian restaurant that I have ever seen in Britain. It really is superb.
The food is sublime and the staff that work there exude joy: I can't imagine being anything but happy in the place.
What a delight Watson and Walpole is.
Situated in the market town of Framlingham, this little Italian restaurant is the joint venture between Chef Rob Walpole and Ruth and David Watson.
A beautifully decorated and laid out dining room greets you upon entry. All accentuated by the warm and friendly greeting from the staff.
We booked the 6.30 sitting and arrived right on time, the doors were opening as we arrived so we were first in the restaurant. When booking we were told that we'd need to be done by 8.30 for the next sitting.
Service was fast and wonderfully pleasant, the staff happy to talk and were lovely through the whole meal.
The menu had a good selection of seasonal dishes that as I understand change on a monthly basis depending on available ingredients.
To start I had Scottish scallops with artichoke crema and 'nduja (£12) and it was a fantastic marriage of the 3 flavours. The scallops were perfectly cooked and a nice presentation.
For primi course I had Porcini and guanciale pansoti with sage butter (£11) and boy was this this dish of the night. The strength of flavour from the Porcini was incredible, the pasta was perfectly made and just the right thickness. I could have had that 3 times over and been happy.
My secondi course was Wood roasted Skate with agretti and lemon (£18.5) and the fish was beautifully cooked with some capers and a butter based sauce and the agretti added a lovely lemony flavour.
We had a bowl of Zucchini fritti to share which were very nice if a tad salty.
For pudding I went adventurous and had the vanilla ice cream.
The wine list wasn't extensive but it has a fantastic selection and variety, there should be something to please every palatte.
It's clearly doing well as by the time we left. The restaurant was full and tables were being turned over fast. Book early to avoid disappointment, we booked two weeks ahead and there was already limited space.
My only negatives would be that at the end things felt a little rushed as we were nearing the 8.30 cut off but this can easily be avoided by booking in the second sitting.
Secondly, the bill already had a discretionary 12.5% service charge added. This is in no way me saying the staff were not deserving of the tip, they were for sure, fantastic service all the way through the evening as I already mentioned. My main feeling is let me decide how much I want to tip, I'd have probably tipped more than the 12.5% because I think the staff were worth more but as it was on there I was less inclined to. I know it's becoming more of the norm to add it to the bill but personally I don't agree with it.
Overall Chef Walpole and the staff are doing something quite special here in this little Italian.
Thank you to all the team for a wonderful night. I was visiting family from Sheffield so I am sad it will be a while before I can come back again.
Watson and Walpole is nothing short of excellent. From the bursting flavours, quality ingredients to the incredibly attentive and passionate staff and ambience, it is hands down one of the best restaurants I've been to! Such a seamless experience and I'll be dreaming of this food until I am back!
Fancy a night of passion? Then why not head on over to Watson and Walpole. You'll find passion in abundance and it shows everywhere you'd care to look. Welcoming and attentive staff who know all about the food. A menu that could be a poem of love to Italian cuisine. We dined in attractive and comfortable surroundings but most of all - the food. Authentic and delicious Italian food from a chef who knows how Italy ticks and uses that know-how to create dishes with wonderful authentic flavours. Brilliant wine list too. A wonderful experience that has ensured our return.
We had a wonderful lunch today (5th Sept 23)
The food was fantastic. Great concept of ordering a set menu. We ate absolutely everything on the plates.
Great value and excellent service.
Thanks so much
I've wanted to eat in Watson and Walpole for some time and we weren't disappointed.
Well trained, attentive front of house staff gave very slick service from the moment we artived. We sat down and tucked our little dog into a corner with a chew.
The food was absolutely delicious.
Please make sure you order zucchini fritti to snack on with your aperitivo, they're matchstick size, well seasoned, crunchy wonders, and they offered to make them gluten free so the husband (who doesn't ordinarily like courgette) could scoff them too.
No complaints about the stuffed zucchini flower for me and woodfire grilled sardines for him to start.
The husband is a ragù expert and he said his veal ragù with perfectly cooked gluten free pasta was the best he'd eaten anywhere.
My Suffolk pork chop was outstanding with little fried mild green chillies.
And our friend's lobster looked first rate.
Deserts were just right for when you're really too full to eat another thing! My coffee slush with Frangelico and a home made almond biscuit boulder on the side just fitted in as did our friends vanilla ice cream.
It's a bit of a schlep from Norwich (where we also have a much loved independent local Italian) but worth the effort.
Outstanding. Thank you.
Review for Beviamo, just drinks so won't rate the food.
We finally got around to checking out Beviamo last night. What a much needed authentic and refreshing addition to Framlingham's nightlife.
Subdued lighting, some cool tunes, busy but not overly crowded, a nice Saturday buzz, I felt right at home.
Great use of a reclaimed building btw, needs a few more Italian fooball team scarves and scudetti adorning rhe walls though, instead of the Liverpool, Norwich and Brighton ones ;-)worry not, its not a sportsbar feel, its a bone fide Italian Bar feel.
Original and interesting cocktails, some safe, selected and revisited classics and some "have you got the cojons to order me" to tempt the connoisseur or adventurous dilettante. NOT the same old cheese like many city cocktail bars.
Nice to see some genuine Italian liqueurs and spirits on the shelf, winking at me like old friends, sunny days and Summer nights in Italia remembered.
The 2 bartenders were busy mixing and pouring out some beautiful concoctions for most of the time we were there but this didn't slow down service provided at all, I'm in no rush on a Saturday night out with La mia Amata anyway.
In fact it was a pleasure to watch them ply their trade, cool but unpretentious, efficient and coordinated, with a little bit of flair and saper fare, Italian style meets English class. Well done ragazzi.
1 niggle , better quality wine glasses.
It ain't cheap. It was the most expensive, but not extortionate, round of the night in town but it has no compare so fair enough. However, the quality is there, the Watson knowledge and experience, the Walpole drive and creativity.
We will return, babysitters permitting. Or perhaps for a cheeky Prosecco b4 lunch,or a quick espresso after lunch, at the counter, just like in Italy. I may even donate some of my favourite Perugia calcio scarves upon our ritorno.
Treat yourself,get down to Beviamo.
Alla prossima!
A&K
Highly recommend the spaghetti lobster and tiramisu. Service is impeccable and food is wow 🤩
A excellent Italian restaurant hidden in the depths of Suffolk. Food is excellent backed up by a well balanced and thoughtful wine list. It really is a little gem.
Impeccable, exquisite, exceptional.....words that come close to describing our new favourite restaurant! These guys know what they're doing from food to atmosphere to customer service.
I have just had another fantastic meal at this fantastic restaurant. No it’s not cheap but it’s great value for money when compared with pub grub which can be about the same price. The eating experience here is far superior as the food is innovative and flavourful and the staff are knowledgeable and attentive. I just wish I lived closer so I could visit more than once a year.
