Very dog friendly and brought bowl of water while we waited for our scrummy pizza! Would recommend to anyone visiting Fort William - staff were great

Had a lovely pub night here last month. We got to taste some beers before ordering what we liked best. Got some good whisky smelling and advice before ordering what we liked best. Good service! And very lovely live music from a man that knows how to deliver a good Johnny Cash song! My girlfriend's contact lense fell out of her eye, on to the pub floor. Since she didn't have contact lense liquid with her, she had to pop the lense in her mouth before popping it back on her eye.. So I can honestly say you can eat of the floor in this place! :)
Great food, great hosts and if the right Tuesday great music. The mulled wine was to die for, never tasted one better. See you next time we are in the area.
Simply epic food. Black pudding from heaven then probably the best pizza I've ever had. The Shetland lager (60 degrees North) was great too!
Was in the g&g on weds. After a long day travelling from Cardiff it was exactly what we needed. Nice food, friendly staff, some great gins to pick from (altho let the staff pick as didn't have a clue about any of them). The atmosphere was great and to top it off there was a bloke with his bagpipes for entertainment (the instrument - nothing else) - dad and I had a fab time and will Def return on next visit to FW.
Lovely pub. Great food. Children friendly and charming staff. We really enjoyed it.
Happened upon this place completely by random and couldn't have been happier. The menu had great variety. The food and ale was delicious. Service was outstanding.
Great service, good food (with a lot of vegetarian option!) and good beer. We will definitely be back.
First time in the grog and gruel and what a great place, food was excellent, you have to try the burgers, and it’s dog friendly too which was great as not too many places allow dogs in, and the dog loved the curly fries too, we will be back next time we are in Fort William
Friendly staff, old style decor, good food promptly served by smiling waitress and dog friendly too. What more can you ask for.
Friendly and welcoming staff who provided quick service. Food was amazing and reasonably priced too. Will definitely be back and if we can leave kids behind will sample the bar downstairs
Very good atmosphere...friendly staff and visitors ....very dog friendly ...didn't eat but menu looked good
The food is brilliant, service is great. Try Cullen Skunk Pie or a Grog Dog. Highly recommended if you're in Fort William, the beer is good too.
Food was amazing, staff were so friendly and pub is dog friendly, exactly what we needed after a long drive!
This place had some niiiice food! We got a haggis burger (with fries), classic nachos, a vegetarian haggis and smoked salmon. All dishes were delicious! When we first got to the door there was a big sign up saying that all tables were taken so we almost turned away. Fortunately my friend really wanted to eat there so we asked upstairs and were told that even though there were no tables left upstairs we could still sit down at the pub/bar area (there was lots of seating and tables!) and we could order the same food from the counter. So we did! And I'm so glad we did! Super nice food, and veggie options too! Parking wasn't available nearby due to this place being on a high street/walking street area, but you can get paid parking about a 10min walk away. Overall we really enjoyed this place and would definitely visit again! Don't listen to the sign that says no tables left!
Great atmosphere in this old time Scottish pub. I loved the energy of the place! I really wanted to try the Wild Boar & Haggis Burger but sadly they were out of wild boar that night. I settled for Aberdeen Angus cheeseburger and was perfectly happy with it. We made reservations, which I recommend doing, as the place was hopping! Kind and good humoured staff!! I was introduced to the greatest beer on the planet there. Unfortunately, it's NOT available in Canada.
Just the sort of pub you'd expect on the main drag of Fort William. Pleasant and helpful staff. Food was very good, and the atmosphere was quite inviting.
Went here for lunch because of the interesting menu. The one thing that caught my eye was the "Grog Dog", their signature hot dog. I had a foot long and another in my party had the 6". (both in the pics below)
The Grog Dog was very nice. A nice, meaty sausage with grilled onions and curly fries. In addition, the side salad was shredded iceberg with small tomatoes and a mustard vinegar sauce, which I love as I'm sick of places that give out rocket lettuce.
The establishment itself has a typical homely Scottish pub look, though the downstairs is rather small so if the place is busy it may be fairly crowded.
Very nice Scottish Pub, value for money.
It's a pity that there are not so much Scottish dishes, but I can understand the menu choices.
We had Classic and Veg Haggies, and I loved that!
The beef pie was average nothing special, same for the chili bean, but totally fine for the price paid. I think the recipes of these two dishes can be improved to deliver a full five stars experience.
Nice beers, I took a fresh Scottish IPA, also the spiced rum was interesting.
Recommended!
Good food, location and friendly staff but a bit extended waiting time for food (lucky we order starters before the main 😀).
We visited Fort William back in September and we loved the Grog & Gruel. They had the best cider (Thistly Cross whisky cask) and they even sell it in bottles for you to take with you. Our favourite bartender was Jay- he was very friendly and great at his job! We only ate (and drank!) downstairs, but the food we had was excellent. We can't wait to come back!
We had a wonderful lunch experience in the bar area as the restaurant was not open until 5PM but we could not fault anything. Staff was friendly and food was just wonderful, especially the tomato chutney. Will definitely visit again once we come back and try more of the menu.
One of many pubs in Fort William with similar menus but - big plus - this one had 4 cask beers on tap. That's as many as Wetherspoons but it's much much nicer place to be. (4 cask ales is rare in Scotland, and these were excellent). We ate there too in the downstairs bar, which is actually a nicer place to eat than the upstairs restaurant. Food was good, especially the steak and ale pie. Everything seems to come with curly fries which were not as tasty as normal French fries. But that's a minor point. Feels like a proper pub inside. Would recommend
Our group ordered a pea and basil soup, a few of the angus beef burgers, and the stag pie. The soup was the favorite part of our meal which was a tad disappointing. The stag pie was unique to say the least. It was very sweet and spiced and not really what we were expecting. The burgers were average — nothing special.
The bar downstairs is a nice place to grab a drink while you wait for your table, though.
Traditional pub. I had the Wild Boar and Haggis burger which was pretty good to be fair. The others burgers also got decent praise. The folk who ordered the pies were less impressed. I can't comment on that. If I were to be super picky, I would serve hi one made fries rather than the curly ones that I think are bought in. Like I said "super picky". Reasonable choice of beers on tap.
Staff were friendly and helpful. Dog friendly. Reasonable price. Happy days
Great food and very friendly staff, amazing atmosphere, always call here when in Fort William.
Lovely lunch with my wife, the staff were very friendly and attentive, but not in your face. We had our jack russell with us and the Lovely lady serving the tables made a new friend for life. I would highly recommend both the pub and food, we will certainly be back.
Second visit and we were not disappointed, same excellent level of service and good food. Genna served us again and was chatty and very friendly. We were definitely made to feel welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Our dog also loved it.
They took our pizza order then came back and said there was no pizza. We had salads. It was fairly quiet, conversation was pleasant.
For a Monday night you couldn't get any better than this. Also who has curly fires now a days!!!!! Literally came here for the hog tails my inner child was beyond excited. And the burger and pie ae had were just as excellent. Lovely beer selection, great pub atmosphere .
We came here because the other 3 pubs that were recommended to us were full. This place had a table with no wait. I enjoyed the food. Good fish and chips and steak pie. Their fries were different from the traditional chunky steak fries, but good!
Lovely pub . We visited on a wonderful rainy day and we were a bit cold so it was very nice to have a delicious warm meal with super friendly staff . You order at the bar and the service is pretty quick . For the ladies the toilets are upstairs we took the wrong one downstairs who were for the men . Prices are very affordable and definitely worth it for what you get .
Tried the elk pie 🥧 and wow absolutely delicious. Haggis batches was also good (although a little more haggis would of been nice) great service and the restaurant is cosy and comfy with a family feel. Great spot for a meal with family and friends. Highly recommended.
