I recognize that this is kind of silly, but I stayed at the Saint Giles Heathrow Hotel in March of 2009 on a college trip. The Saint Giles was our last hotel before we flew home. Our bus driver, bless his heart, tried to show us around London but instead got lost. We ended up getting to the hotel extremely late--between nine and ten, if I recall correctly. The hotel restaurant Il Grasso was closing as we arrived. We hadn't had dinner yet as we'd been on the bus for hours at that point. None of us really had the energy to go out to look for food. The restaurant staff still present when we arrived was literally a manager and one cook. Those two people stayed open for several more hours so we could eat. The manager served all twenty of us while the cook got out our food astonishingly quickly, considering that they had to turn some appliances back on and also they were cooking entirely by themselves. I remember that the food was delicious and, obviously, fresh. I had spaghetti and my mother had pizza. The portions, based on what I can recall, were generous. Even more comforting was the manager's jokes and lightning-speed service. The Il Grasso staff in March 2009 was astoundingly friendly, patient, and quick. I still gush about that visit and the fun of basically having a private dinner event due to two people's kindness to a bunch of lost Americans. Obviously I can't know if either of those folks still work at Il Grasso but I hope that the restaurant continues to have that level of customer service and professionalism.
