After a demanding walk from The Old Town to Calton Hill to Portrait gallery and then the longest route to Royal Botanic Garden sitting down was a damn good idea. The first thing you see entering the Royal Botanic Garden is the gift shop and then The Gateway Restaurant on the top.
By the looks of the restaurant it was very much inviting and a place you would want to sit next to the glass window looking into the garden.
The restaurant is tastefully designed with wide spaces between each table which gives it a more relaxing feel as compared to crammed up spaces.
The ambiance was soothing, the restaurant is quite a hit with senior citizens and you might spot many around which I think is nice as it's a quite restaurant with peaceful setting no loud music, no crying babies, no loud men and no overly joyous families. Since it was just a sit down for a quick bite.
I went for salmon bagel with  cream cheese and rocket and side chips. Nothing in the dish was complaint worthy and I quite liked it (more for the ambiance) than the food. Standard cappuccino nothing fancy.

ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING that we noticed was the overpriced bottle of wine on the menu. It was four times more expensive than it's actual value. It is the case with every restaurant and bar in The UK but four times more than the actual price OUCH.

It's a great place to sit down before you take on the walk through the entire garden.

I do recommend The Gateway Restaurant.

Great place to eat and drink something! Sweet portions of scons, and more! All surrounded by the botanic garden makes this place a nice place to be. Feeling relax with the nature! Located in the heart of the botanic garden you will find this place, nice terrace but inside is so cool as well. Downstairs there is a nice shop and part of the museum with expos!

WOW! The best food venue we found during our 7 days in Scotland, when considering food quality and price.

3.9🌟 If you are a family with children you're better off bringing your own picnic and have it on the many places an lawns on the grounds as all the Cafés are NOT the cheapest. The food was fresh, there was a soup& sandwich deal that was actually the most decent thing, different soups of the day, staff is friendly and helpful.

Went there for an official party. I absolutely loved the place. It’s a beautiful location for a party . It’s got sort of a big deck with a lot of seating along with a big area which is indoors. The food was okay, I did like the burger that we had and chicken skewers were pretty good too. Lots of drink options. The place definitely stood out for me as to how pretty it was. Don’t miss a chance to visit it if you just want to chill out and have a good time :) The staff were also extremely patient and lovely guiding us with whatever questions we had. It was a lovely evening. Loads of parking available and it’s really close to Inverleith park.

Superb food made from own Kitchen Garden in Royal Botanical Garden Edinburgh. They use organic fresh produce which grows in their garden. There is fantastic atmosphere and food is delicious. Staff is nice too. I recommend to come there with friends, family or solo.

it is buffet style restaurant, where you choose the salads the staffs scoop them on your dish and you pay for the number of varieties you choose. wheat and halloumi salad was good, frittata and polenta also tasted nice. beware of the seagulls! they are flying around the place waiting for food

I have been to this place many a times and every time my experience has just been great. The staff are very friendly and when they are busy - they still have the attention to detail service. Also I have a disabled child and they accommodate her well there / food menu is very good and out of the ordinary. Thanks

Great location overlooking the garden in Gateway Centre upstairs. Service is attentive and there are local and sustainable products in the dishes which are really enjoyable.
