Reviews The Cameo Bar

Cameo was the best hangover cure for me today, for which I am very grateful! Having been on a hen weekend, which had come to and end on Sunday morning, I had a lot of time to kill before my flight (by which point everyone else had gone home on the train). Seeing that they had a 1pm showing of Beauty and the beast, I power walked across town to make it there 15 mins into the film (but they still let me in, thanks guys!). Re-living my youth bought back a comforting feeling of joy and they totally didn't judge me for being the adult by myself in there! The cafe was lovely too, needing a caffeine kick I opted for a cappuccino, despite not being a coffee drinker and it was lovely, I've been converted! The cinema is amazing and quirky and that staff were lovely and really helpful, even recommending the best way to get to the airport! Thanks guys, from a hungover but happy Londoner!

I went for a dog friendly movie and it was awesome. Such a great atmosphere, everyone so friendly and love the idea that I can come with a dog. Can we have more movies like this please.

Lovely gem of a cinema. We’re visitors to the city and we stumbled upon it on our way to town. Lovely atmosphere, beautiful architecture, friendly staff.

An enjoyable and unusual event at The Cameo Edinburgh when we were allowed to have our dogs with us when we watched .... of course .., Isle of Dogs! They were all (and there were lots there!) very well behaved, no fights and no “little accidents”. Lets have more!

Well worth the journey! Travelled from Newcastle, wasn't disappointed with the experience. Lovely friendly atmosphere, great selection of films and comfortable seats. Was also a time travel to the days when cinema wasn't multiplexes, and much nicer. Bar was great too. Will definitely return!!

I visited the Cameo yesterday for probably the fourth time (saw T2 Trainspotting) and once again it was a lovely day out. Not so much just going to the cinema - more of a treat. I always look forward to visiting and I'm never disappointed. Oh and T2 was fab!! :)

First time visitor to this lovely wee cinema that had all the features that remind you when going to the cinema was a more pleasurable experience. Went into the studio that had just 37 seats and watched the Beatles 'eight days a week' documentary. Perfect place for it. Will definitely be back.

Been using this cinema for years. Love it. Comfy bar. Good selection of films. Friendly and exceptionally professional staff. Last night I was verbally and homophobically abused by a man in the bar. The staff were brilliant. Came to my aid. Ejected and barred man. Made sure I was OK. Brilliant. If I could give 10 stars I would.

Love the Cameo, been going there for years, seen lots of Edin film fest events there too. Soooo different from the big multiplexes and love how there is always the possibility of spontaneous applause (something you'd never get at a multiplex). Keep doing what your doing.

We live in West Lothian but took out a yearly membership for the Cameo in Edinburgh. Great cinema, small but very welcoming, friendly staff, on site bar and comfortable seating. So much more of a night out rather than the coldness of the multi plexs

Was there last night to see Trainspotting 2. The Cameo is always a pleasure, lovely comfy recliners, super clean, friendly staff, fabulous Cinema 1. I used to have a seat when I was a student. Great bar. As an ex member of staff at Filmhouse. .. Cameo rocks.

One of, if not the best cinema-going experience I’ve ever had. Everything from the entrance, to the foyer, to the bar in the back, the place seamlessly oozes class and prioritises atmosphere. The “cinema-decorum” if you will, was top drawer. Everyone within Auditorium 1 was completely respectable throughout the entirety of the film, which has proven to be a rarity these days. Bravo, Cameo - you have gained a new guest 👏🏼

2nd visit here for the Wes Anderson double feature and absolutely making it a regular occurrence to see movies here despite me living outside of the city. The ambiance is unmatched, the food options are amazing and allergy inclusive & there’s also a bar where you can order drinks to take into the film with you! Staff are lovely and always helpful.

Great local cinema with a good program of popular and art films, with fun older movies regularly shown. Good bar with food, including vegan options, which is very popular with locals. Excellent, friendly staff. Very welcoming for LGBTQI+. The only co structure feedback I have is that the last time I was there the first several rows of the main screen were closed off due to safety issues, which limits capacity and seating options.

The cafe serves a great Coffee and cake combo. In the pic I had carrot and pistachio cake which was well worth it and an oat latte. The staff are very accommodating and friendly. Love the old decor and a great place for film or just a cafe visit

With the demise of the Edinburgh Filmhouse, this is one of the very few places left where you'll catch non-mainstream and independent films. (You can also see the mainstream films here, too.) Screen 1 is the large amphitheatre, capable of seating several hundred people, I estimate, and there are two other screens for more compact audiences. A good range of snacks and a bar augment the film-going experience.

Lovely cinema with a good selection of non-blockbusters movies. Seats aren't the most comfy but it's an old theater! The price does tend to make you chose carefully the movie you want to see, it's a bit pricey.

Great little cafe bar, with some nice wines and top coffee. Relax before or after a movie - many of which you can't see anywhere else. The main screen remains one of the most atmospheric and special cinema auditoriums in the world.

Great, helpful staff. Cinema hall itself looks very worn-out. Seats are very comfortable, but the view is easily obstructed by the row in front. Edge seats suffer from being too close to the AC. The sound quality could be improved.

An independent cinema in the heart of the city which we should cherish. The Cameo is great and with more financial support it could be great. If you hurry past it may look small, perhaps art house or perhaps even seedy (that's what teenage me thought a life time ago) BUT it's lovely, splendid and comfortable inside. I'm writing this during the Scotland Loves Anime week long event. That was supposed to be at an other indie cinema into that fell into administration. At very short notice the Picturehouse agreed to save the week. Heroes. That's proof of how good the staff and administrative team are here. Looking to host a film event? Ask the Cameo. Screen one is fairly large and the seats are comfortable, but not terribly stacked so if you're short you will need to sit near the front. Attached to the cinema is a popular pub. It'll probably be busy, so grab a seat if you're tempted rather than dither. I'm not a member. I live miles away. Nevertheless, I'm tempted, especially if the cinema becomes the new forever home of SLA. [2023 update: February - it's a tough time for cinemas right now and I hope all at the Cameo are okay. I'm just back from a trip and it was as friendly as ever]

Our family visited the kids screening today and our daughter thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff were all really friendly and the screening itself is a great idea to introduce mini people to the cinema!

There is not so many cinemas like this in Edinburgh left after Filmhouse collapsed. Yes, they are part of Picturehouse group, but Cameo is still able to keep their feeling of an independent cinema. They have a good ambiance and a reasonable cheap cinema tickets. There are film festivals, there are screenings of new movies, and there are screenings of good old movies. They also have reclining chairs and those double-seats for couples. What else you want from cinema like this? I got their yearly membership and I am happy with that. And one last request for everyone: Please do support cinemas like this. If Cameo will be gone, all what we will be left with will be big chains like Odeon, Cineworld etc.

Loved this little cinema, an unexpected joy on our vacation. All the movies they were playing looked great and I loved how intimate it was. The popcorn smell was also much less than normal which I appreciate.

It's been many many years since I last visited. Lovely cinema special viewing of Jason and the Argonauts took me back to 12 years old. Very nice bar also.

Lovely small cinema with a QUIET audience who preferred to hear the film rather than drown it out with crisps and sweet wrappers. A very nice bar area.

Invited to a preview screening of 'Aftersun'. The seats are comfortable but the building is in need of repair. Ladies toilet is down a flight of stairs. Good location for city centre.

Lovely little cinema full of character and charm just like a trip to your (probably now closed) local independent cinema. Was recommended a visit online whilst looking for things to do on holiday in Edinburgh. Screen and sound have had a modernisation so don’t expect a crappy presentation (this is part of a larger company) retro and classic films show also. Just £7.50 on a Monday night compared to £11+ the rest of the time. Screen 1 has really comfy reclining seats throughout the screen as standard. Only downfall was a damp smell which considering how hot the place was seemed strange but after half an hour you didn’t really notice it.

Went to attend the Harryhausen Awards on the 29th and it was amazing, prices of drinks and snacks was decent, screen size was great and the bar had a wide range of drinks. The staff were also really lovely.
