Hidden in Summerhall, this bar is pretty amazing. Best apple cider ever, quirky decoration, great food, even better people. On any day it's a perfect spot for after work drinks... but during the summer it gets even better thanks to their lovely Pickerings' gin van, their beer garden and all the fun that is happening in the area. Honestly, do not miss it. Plus, it's right next to the Meadows

Nooks and crannies abound to sit on whether you want food/ drink or both. Pickerings gin made on site served here as well as a range on beers. Outside seating for those pleasant days.

Lovely bar and restaurant in a really cool building and surroundings which result in a great atmosphere. Food is reasonably priced but still high quality - enjoyed the venison burger! They weirdly don't seem to serve red wine though... Apart from that a lovely meal out without having to worry too much about the cost.

I love this bar and the Summerhall too! Were else can you get fabulous food, find a brewery, a distillery, and loads of evening events on too?!  The Royal Dick bar is not the easiest place to find. Its on the SE corner of the Meadows - head through the main entrance to the Summerhall (Arts hub) and you will feel like you are back at school and have an urge to run in the corridors! Cross the hall, head out to the yard and right in front of you is the Royal Dick Bar with a huge courtyard space that they often host pop up food and drink events in.

The bar, with illustrated vet cards laid out beneath glass, crowned by mad scientist distillation equipment and old books all around you. Off in the cubbyhole rooms are a (disinfected) operating table, animal bone wall art and enormous model ship. The whole feels like a house party thrown by a mad professor. They have a great on site brewery Barneys Beer so trying a beer or two is a must. As is ordering their house Gin - Pickerings served with pink grapefruit.

There is both food and drink on offer here. The menu offers either full sized dinners or small tapas style bites. The bread and dips, crab, sweet potato and chilli fritters or paprika-spiked octopus and potato, even or padron peppers are a perfect snack while enjoying a drink. Though in ambience it's more bar than bistro, the menu and food presentation are distinctly restaurant-ified: home-cured organic salmon gravlax, bouncy fresh Scrabster cod with bacon and mussel chowder, scallops and black pudding or shreddable braised blade of beef with barley risotto are all things I have tried.

The feather steak with Café de Paris Butter and chips is an absolute treat and really reasonable too. More bar-style is the wide ranging and inventive list of sharing platters which are huge and really good quality, you should try the garlicky hoummus with bread and olives.

There is a decent, if not extensive, wine list and a really good traditional style cocktail menu. We took the dog and she loved it too!

Really enjoyed this spot! Found it on a Google map search while we were in the area. The BLT and Calamari sandwiches were delicious. Would highly recommend this place for a quick and cheap but tasty dinner! Visited from Canada by the way and we’ll be back next time we’re in Edinburgh.

Unique decor and atmosphere blended with youthful, friendly staff and excellent beer & whisky selection make for a great night (PS over 40s are welcome 😉 and you could easily pass yourself off as a Prof.! ) Outside space is very good too and used in (most) weathers 🙂🌧

Good variety of ales, the volcano IPA is a particular favourite. A bit pricier than nearby bars. Decent selection of pub food, too. Excellent location for drinks before a gig, and the courtyard is great on a beautiful Edinburgh, summer night.

Quirky kind of place but to be fair I'm probably not the right age and demographic. Glorious setting and great Uni courtyard. Just a tad flat to me and omg pricey beer even by Edinburgh standards. But hey fill your boots

Has own beer and gin selection which are both very delicious. Quirky decor in keeping with history of the building which was the central veterinarian school. Don’t try and park as there isn’t any and during the festival there are usually external bars and food trucks.

Our friend in Edinburgh went to vet school at The Royal Dick and suggested we go for a drink and some food. The staff is super friendly and helpful, the drinks are great and the food was delicious. I will definitely be putting this on my list of places to come back to.

Love the quirky atmosphere and the outdoor seating. All very casual, nice for a drink. Come here often with friends or visitors as like historic connection with vet school also.

Open pub, with novel lagers, and a large selection of gins from the Pickering Distillery next door. Staff were particularly pleasant. The rooms are interestingly decorated with flags, tribal masks and hats.

Awesome location, absolute gem in fact, all the old vetinary school artifacts make this gaff unmissable. The staff are very bit random, but the food was excellent and the beer flowed like wine

Lovely place with bookable private room. Food used to be good with lasagne and haggis stuffed egg, but now it’s just hamburgery fare.

The absolute beating heart of the Edinburgh arts scene. Lovely food and drink but more importantly, much more importantly, a place that is trying to make a difference.

Nice place. Big open space next to the meadow's in Edinburgh. Serves food. Went for Canada day quiz and they played Canadian music. Served putine and had beers from Canada on the bar. Seating is better outside than inside but still plenty of space. Was a busy night at the pub quiz. They do contactless and have beer on tap as well as other drinks. Reasonable price for city centre Edinburgh with a beer garden and good music/decor.
