Patisserie Valerie is just perfect for breakfast, we tried the Pain au chocolat that was fresh & delicious and had a cappuccino. Lovely Place with friendly staff. Recommended!!
I was very happy with the food and service. We had Afternoon tea and every last bit was delicious. We left full and satisfied. I’d be happy to try one of their Mille feuille next time.
I pass this place on a regular basis and there is never a time when its not busy and even more so now that we are heading into the Edinburgh Festival time.
I opted to go in here for a sweet treat lunch. I have to say that this place is more geared up to deal with tourists who either speak a foreign language or dont mind having rude service. I was eventually greeted by one of the waitresses who sighed heavly and showed me to my table.
The only reason I give this place 3.5/5 is because the food and drink are good and my waitress who took my order and looked after was very nice.
I ordered the Madame Valerie Cream Tea - 2 scones, cream, jam and a pot of tea. A bargain!
The tea was well brewed and I was delighted once again to find a teapot that pours without spilling! Hoorah.
The scones were fruit scones, very light with a slight vanilla taste. They are very uniform in shape and well baked. The cream was clotted cream, thick and super creamy; and my waitress brought be 2 jam holders so I had 8 jams to choose from! I chose the raspberry after all that.
MY waitress was lovely and friendly, quite chatty.
This is a super busy place, with noise levels to match. If you can put up with the constant flow of people, lots of children and chatter AND want to eat some great pasties and cakes, then head here!
My previous visit I had some cakes so there pics on here of them too!
A patisserie at the old town of Edinburgh which is running since 1926. I have tried one coffee eclair and one chocolate mousse cake with a cup of Earl Grey tea. Coffee eclair was so awesome while chocolate mousse cake's taste was average.
Prince Gastronome. Once again, I break form and review a chain. Patisserie Valerie locations can be found everywhere, but never outside of the UK, with most infesting London like one of those rashes which feel sooo good when you scratch them. Edinburgh has three.... Patisserie Valeries, not rashes. Why would I review such a location...maybe because I wish to support them.
You see, if Patisserie Valerie (and you have to know I am copy/pasting each time I mention them) was coffee-centered like every café chain in North America, I wouldn’t give them a second glance. By default, I would have preferred to avoid a chain in favor of a local independent, but I am glad I was convinced otherwise. For one, Patisserie Valerie centers on cakes, fantastic cakes. They are all about their bakery, so that I can get behind. The service presents Patisserie Valerie as much a restaurant over a traditional café where you pick and choose pastries twisting in a display guarded by plexi. They even offered a winter menu which Savanna and I took advantage of. Three courses for $12.95, and while Savanna ordered the hummus with smoked paprika and warm pita bread with the roast butternut squash stuffed with mozzarella, peppers, basil, and sundried tomato, I had the chicken liver & wild mushroom pate with crostini and sunflower shaped ravioli stuffed with asparagus, garden peas, butter and sage.
And there will be cake.
Or rather a slice of Valerie’s Gateaux. And they were amazing. We each chose one slice of different cakes, taken from a list of about twenty. I don’t know why anyone would want to visit Starbucks with awesome places like Patisserie Valerie sitting around. But, I guess, that’s the way of the world. When I was in London, my mother and I went into a Starbucks to buy a novelty souvenir for a family member. If I ever took her to Patisserie Valerie, that would pretty much be the end of her fascination with that—look, I don’t drink coffee, okay? I could never understand people’s fascination with it. I have tried it numerous times, with sugar, cream, vanilla, topped with chocolate and frothed to my desire, and I have never enjoyed a cup. Patisserie Valerie serves coffee and tea...and cake. So try Patisserie Valerie instead of ordering that double latte enema from the green siren for once.
Green siren, you know, the symbol for Starbucks. By the way, did you know that the siren represents manic obsession and death? I’m not kidding; in myth, they murdered you for looking pretty. Still undecided, try this: Go to Google Images and just enter Starbucks. What do you get? You get twenty variations of the logo with the occasional paper cup. The dominant attribute they are trying to convey, which Starbucks promotes, is their logo, not their actual product, though one may argue their logo IS their product. Now, enter Patisserie Valerie and see what you get.
Getting hungry aren’t you?
Food: 3.5/5
Service: 3/5
Presentation: 3/5
Value: 4/5
Recommendation: 3.5/5
Patisserie Valerie lure people in with wonderful window displays, thankfully the cakes do live up to expectations however a little more effort is required to get the service up to scratch.
The cakes here are phenomenal! It's become a ritual amongst all my friends and birthdays are now just an alibi to get cake from PV. The macarons, eclaires and pastries are all fantastic too. The only setback, according to me is the Ice cream which is too dry and mediocre tasting for my liking; though I've heard that the Irish cream is still pretty good.
Delicious late morning breakfast album the atmosphere was a bit tourist and the service quite slow. Anyway the food was good the desserts look amazing
There’s a time and place for cakes, it’s usually either daytime or nighttime and should take place close to your current position.
We had passed Patisserie Valerie on a number of occasions and always looked through the window at the fancy cakes. I’m not quite sure why it took us so long to venture in and do more than just look at them, but today was that day.
I had already seen exactly what I wanted through the window…. everything! I had to limit myself to just one cake though, the classic éclair! I used to love these growing up, so this would remind me of my youth, a cup of coffee would ensure I remained in my present adult ‘mature’ form though and not run the risk of embarrassing EdinBloggette through cafe based regression.
Service was fairly relaxed, bordering on sluggish, not quite what we had expected when looking through the window.
Our coffees arrived and cakes weren’t far behind, as soon as my eclair was in front of me I knew I made the right choice.
The cream was creamy(!) and dark chocolate was to die for. It was such a light pastry, nothing like those I enjoyed in my youth, this was a whole new ball game.
EdinBloggette ordered an apple tart with cream, this too was met with extreme satisfaction. Although the raisins didn’t go down too well with my cake companion, so I made light work of these. As always we shared portions to maximise reviewing potential and both agreed that these were lovely sweet treats – we’d happily return to have a meal here and then follow it up with a couple more cakes.
It’s a lovely chain of cafes, which seems to be on a mission to take over Edinburgh with two already in close proximity and another on Rose Street. No doubt many people have been drawn in by the wonderful window displays, whilst the cakes do taste first class they are let down a little by second class service.

In addition to the beautiful city of Edinburg, this candy store offers a wide variety of sweets and coffees to its customers. There are many options for those who like quality sweets. The service at this place is very cordial and friendly, leaving everyone at ease. Also, to finish, they have a very good espresso. great option.
Even though this is a chain, their high tea is really good! Everything was delicious, nothing to complain about. They are right next door to the Elephant Cafe where JK Rowling wrote Harry Potter, so you'll have lots of tourists in and out and around. If you're looking for a casual place for high tea, this would be a great place!
This is a wonderful little pastry shop in Edinburgh Scotland. We just happened upon it and decided to go in for a coffee and pastry. Great place.
They have amazing cakes tea and cooked food even if your vegan like me
Lovely spot for afternoon tea. Excellent variety and very attentive staff.
The staff here were lovely and friendly upon arrival. Coffee arrived not as hot as you would expect but still delicious overall. The selection of cakes (also vegan options) were tasteful and value for money
I'm going to give it five stars because I think the staff are tremendously friendly, the coffee is good and the cakes and pastries look amazing. Great location, slightly overshadowed by the Elephant House next door where Harry Potter was supposed to have been written in the 1990s. I was there a lot in the 1990s and didn't see her once. Just saying!!!
Was walking by, saw it, gone in, had best time, left with a huge smile. Well done for our server. 5/5
Has their set two course lunch menu: chicken, spinach and wild mushroom pie followed by one of their excellent cakes. Service was good, seating squeezed into a small space so be prepared to be jossled a bit. Food was excellent with decent portions for the price. Worth the visit but on a quieter day next time.
Loved it! The food and ambiance were very nice. We had the Strawberry Gateau and found it to be quite delicious. I would go there again in a heartbeat, if in Scotland!
I'm giving a 4 star because I was expecting more. After "eating" all the cakes displayed at the window, and seeing the prices I thought everything would be delicious. We went there for brunch, had "Madame Valerie Breakfast with fried egg", "Eggs Benedict Royal" and "Grilled Croissant Chees and Ham", it was good, but not WOW!
Hat's off to the staff who is very friendly and professional
Had some very good pancakes with a friend, we spend together at least one hour there. Relaxing place, very cozy and warm. Will definitely go back next time I'll go to Edinburgh!
Try their pancakes if you go
We had a cream tea for two, good value at £7.95 we had a pot of tea each which gave 3 cups of tea, a fruit scone and a choice of 4 different jams and a large dish of clotted cream. Really tasty
