I don’t often make it out to Craigmillar but I’d had the White House Kitchen on my radar for a visit for quite a while. On my way to the official opening of the Thistle Foundation’s new Centre of Wellbeing, I popped in to give it a try. In a signature white building, as you might expect from the name, it’s a sort of community hub with a cafe as the centrepiece.
Accompanying me on our first jaunt (one of many, I hasten to add) to The White House, is the long-suffering BOGG (Big Ol’ Grumpy Git). We sit in the surprisingly bright space with its jauntily colourful stripy tables and struggle to plump; there is so much to choose from. Finally we stroll to the counter and place our order. A hearty mushroom and rocket soup for him with a hefty wedge of the homemade bread and I settled for my second choice (they had run out of pulled pork) of a braised beef burger. Delivery is swift and although the rocket was lost in the deeply mushroomy soup, it is gorgeous. Not what I expected at all (but I did wonder how a braised burger was going to work), a homemade burger bun (very similar to a brioche bun) stuffed with slow braised pulled beef.Yea gods, I’m blown away. Served with a bowl of Cajun spiced hand-cut fries, red slaw and a salad – all for the princely sum of £5.25! Soup at £2.25 is a bargain too.

Colin was absolutely brilliant. Let us the space for a party on short notice and was there throughout to make sure everything ran smoothly. Will highly recommend 👌
Came in for a lovely lunch today! Such friendly and helpful staff! Amazing prices! Great quality! Freshly prepared food! So tasty! Great menu! Would definitely recommend!
I would recommend stopping here for lunch if you are in the area. We were in the area and looking for somewhere for a quick lunch and after a quick Google search noticed that the White House Kitchen was fairly new. We arrived about 2pm so it wasn't busy and we're able to get served straight away. They have a large menu for being a small place. Items such as sandwiches, toasties, pizzas, burgers, salad, macaroni etc. They also offer coffees and tray bakes. We ordered chicken curry calzone, chicken toastie and chips. Food came out in good time and was delicious. I think it was the manager who served us and he was friendly and interested in how all his customers visits were. A few people came in for takeaways so I think this is a popular place for locals.
Excellent all day breakfast choices and very cheap, will definitely be returning again soon.
A very good place for a quick snack. Food is cheap and staff is friendly!
