Apart from the service- we had a great night here. The food and drinks were good and filling. A mixed bag- fish and chips, pasta, seafood- and the drinks were good too! Shame the service was so uninspired. It was like they just couldn't be bothered.

Very good quality price relation. The fish and chips is quite famous, winner of multiple awards, and it is really easy to say why :) good vegetarian options and a good selection of bottled beers. Would definitely come back

Pleasantly surprised by our dinner here. Shrouded by average reviews, we were a little sceptical about how much we could possibly enjoy the meal. However, my duck in grand marnier sauce was delicious! Tender meat with a smooth, rich sauce. More home cooking than fancy French kitchen, but still enjoyed it. The staff we very accommodating and the view over Victoria st was impressive. Lovely place to spend a balmy Edinburgh evening. Would like to see a few more options on the menu and inside is in need of a spruce, but outside dining's a winner.

Beautiful -especially outside. The four of us had a great meal at Maxie's! Took the advice of others and went in then straight back to the relatively quiet balcony overlooking the lower street. Service is kind of a catch-as-catch-can affair but all very friendly. Haggis, nips, and tatties were tasty. Spicy enchilada delicious. Scottish Salmon special very good. We've also gone back for a quick bump before a whiskey tour and had a quiet sit inside.

Walk down the Stairs past lautrec-style painted posters into a comfortabke and warm ambuanc and the sounds of jamie cullum or miles davis Eclectic french bistro inspired menu, a good wine list, relaxed but prompt service and you gave the ingredients of a relaxed and convivial night out. Handy for several old-town events during the festival, and just off the top of the Royal Mile.

As you walk down stairs the atmosphere captivates you and makes you feel at ease. It can be warm down there, but after walking about and getting cold outside it was welcoming. I ordered the haggis and mussel starters because I wanted to try these on my first trip to Scotland. See my photos for the starter size because I was impressed. And they both tasted amazing. I'm glad I chose Maxie's to try these dishes for the first time. I ended it with the Cranachan, which was sweet and had lovely juicy raspberries throughout. All Enjoyed with the whisky of the month of course. The only shame is I don't live this side of the UK or i'd certainly visit more often. Thank you for a great meal and experience.

Excellent food! We had the seafood pasta and the fish & chips, both were delicious. It was getting chilly that evening so we ordered hot chocolate to go. Excellent!

American Chef here! The Goat Cheese Salad was amazing! The rest of the meal was very good as well. The service was good but not great that is why that along with the atmosphere I can only give 4 stars! Lots of potential to make this one of Edinburghs top restaurants.

Nice lentels cream and chicken stuffed with haggis. The chicken was a bit overcooked and dry. Kind staff

Warm atmosphere. Servers were so friendly and really couldn’t have done enough for us despite the busy time. The food was tasty. We had a selection of starters as a main. We also came for a drink before and sat out on the balcony which overlooks Victoria street. A lovely view and evening.

The terrace seating were full and we had to sit indoors for our lunch. Go for the terrace seating for a much better view and ambience. Fish and Chips were a bit fishy smell. Other wise, good service, and central location.

We stumbled upon this nondescript restaurant after visiting the Castle. A small front leads to stairs that take you down to a long, narrow dining area. Ask for the terrace, with lovely seating in the back that overlooks the Cowgate/Grassmarket area. The menu was varied; order the Brie & cranberries if available --delicious! The fish & chips were nicely done, as was the linguini. The one drawback if you eat inside is it gets quite hot & stuffy.

Really busy Edinburgh Tattoo time but still managed to fit us in (party of four). Not any good if you have mobility issues as you have to go down stairs. It doesn't look much from the outside but warm atmosphere inside also have a great terrace area for eating outside. Now to the food when the waitress came first thing asked was if anyone had any allergies I'm coeliac so was glad to hear they are aware was given a list of all the things that had anything in that could make me ill giving me the chance to make a decision unfortunately most things did contain gluten but I asked if it was possible to have the lamb chops without haggis girl checked with chef (she was new and only 14 bless) she came back and said chef could do lamb chops with mashed potatoes and veg with a red wine gravy all gf and it was absolutely delicious and I had no side effects so obviously no cc. only reason for 4 stars is the stairs going in. Would recommend this place to eat.

Great little family run bistro my partner and i really enjoyed the food I had the Scottish traditional fish and chips and she had the haggis neeps&tatties. Both ended up with empty plates highly recommended 👌🏻

Popped in for a drink with my daughter on our way to the castle. Had the most amazing mulled wine. Then later on got one at the Christmas Market, such a disappointment.
