Nachos. A bowl of corn tortilla chips topped with melted Monterey Jack cheddar, jalapenos, salsa & sour cream. Choice of traditional beef chilli, chicken or spicy three bean
It was the start of my holiday so I went absolutely wild, I ordered coffee and carrot cake and took a seat. My intention was to have the cake during the film but as readers of my previous post will have found out I find waiting for cake very challenging.
As one of the independent cinemas in Edinburgh that aims to celebrate world cinema in all its brilliance and diversity, we go occasionally to watch classic films or to meet friends at the Filmhouse Cafe Bar for their nachos of which the OH is a massive fan. The food is reasonably priced and the staff are always friendly. It's not a formal seating sort of place, so help yourself to a table and when you're ready, head on up to the bar and order your drink and a plate of food to eat while you wait for your chosen film to start or to fill that tummy when a film's just finished.
Conveniently located behind the ticket desk of the cinema shop, you're invited to sit and relax. If you're about to head into the cinema, just let the bar staff know and they'll give you your drink in a plastic cup so you can take it with you into the cinema. I've never had a disappointing dining experience at the Cafe Bar, their nachos always fill the void and I've become partial to their runny cheese. It always comes out of the kitchen steaming hot and fresh. Now that's one way to support your local independent business.
If you're hungry and want to watch a movie at the Filmhouse this place is just perfect. Food is great, there is plenty of seating space and staff is friendly and helpful. It may not look very fancy but it doesn't need to.
I just caught a movie at the Filmhouse. I've been going here for decades, always love the atmosphere. I didn't go to the cafe/restaurant this time. Fully wheelchair accessible. Ramp up to the front door. Automated doors. Lifts. Accessible bathroom. Also you can get reduced tickets if you are disabled. It was a bit sad that the Cinema 1 was nearly deserted, with perhaps 7 people watching the film. After 6:30pm (I think) you can park pretty much in front of the building, but make sure you double check parking restrictions.
Good food at a decent budget and a nice cafe-bar environment to both enjoy with friends or have a meal on your own.
Went late night after 8pm and was able to get a table to eat at, have coffee and relax reading till close about 11.30.
Also managed to make most of their 16-25 membership discount, and got my meal and drink at a much cheaper price - recommend making membership if able to make use of the discount as it’s free to make.
Hidden gem on a busy Friday night in town. Out with 6 friends fighting to get us all fed in a venue not bursting at the seams. This place came up trumps. The menu is limited however everything delivered surpased expectations. Really good fresh cooked meals with an international theme. Plenty of healthy options and many delicious vegetarian options, not just the usual 1-2 token choices. If you are trawling up and down Lothian Road looking for a place to eat, think slightly outside the usual box and try here. Good access, good service and the music will not drown out the conversation. Nicely stocked bar as well!
Found this by accident. Lovely little niche place!! Welcoming staff.. Good value breakfast! Recommend!
Polite staff, all lovely & helpful. Food delicious and fresh. Lots of vegan/vegetarian choices and good range of snacks/light bites and more substantial meals. Prices reflect city centre but reasonable. Popular and usually busy.
Nice relaxed cafe style venue. Nice snacks - we like the filo parcels with feta, spinach and pinenuts or sometimes the flatbread and a salad, some humous perhaps. I recently had the lemon drizzle cake.. ok, I can make better at home.. maybe the icing was a bit too much sweet? still, I enjoyed it and you get a good size slice for your money. Very reasonable prices. Coffees are good too but I do wish this place amongst others would give you the choice of a deep mug instead of these teacup style of coffee cups where the coffee goes cold in no time. I think they do have paper mugs for takeaway coffees 🤔 Anyway, that's a personal choice and doesn't take away from the service/food at this super little eating place which I can only recommend.
Almost as venerable an Edinburgh institution as the Filmhouse cinema, the cafe bar is a great place for a reasonably priced dinner before a film. They offer various nice options, but I invariably end up with their nachos and a local beer. Staff are polite and friendly - and tables are safely spaced.
Friendly atmosphere, good menu (inc veggie and vegan), decent range of drinks, nice wifi included, a lovely place to relax before or after film screening, or even when not going to Filmhouse screening. Especially lively during film festival.

Very good place to meet people and have lunch then you can watch a movie and you don't need to worry about leaving the bar still open for refreshments so you have plenty time on your side and castle terrace as a massive car park 5 minutes walking or better still take a bus plenty, mostly going all over the city and out side town's nice and cheap, money in your pocket.
Excellent choice of films, especially on our most recent visit during the Film Festival. The café isn't too shabby, either with a variety of tasty food on the menu.
Brilliant place for quiet catch up with friend while having a nice cuppa, snack or meal. Or just wander in on your own to sit down while out shopping. Great films on show too.
The ever changing menu in this licensed cafe bar is every bit as broad and interesting as the monthly film programme.
Expect world cuisine, imaginative, seasonal, hearty fare at very reasonable prices.
Great choice of vegetarian dishes and kids will love to see their orange juice being freshly squeezed in front of them.
Popular meeting place at the weekend - it can get busy!
Helped me when I fell outside this building and kept me calm while waiting for an ambulance to come and see if I was okay have to give them a good review for this and also got a taxi for me to get to a nearest stop for my coach home and also provided free food and juice to me and got a hot drink too to keep me warm
Excellent menu with good veggie options. Friendly helpful staff. Despite what some folk think, the Filmhouse us open to the public not just members. Try it and see!
The food in the Filmhouse Cafe Bar is fab! It's a no-frills kind of place, with a chilled out atmosphere. It can get pretty busy, particularly just before films are about to start, but service is always quick. The selection of food is great - a variety of classics on the core menu, like baked potatoes, nachos (which are humungous and delicious!!), and a nice range of specials which change each day. Good range of beers both on tap and bottled
