Even though we went for lunch, The Blackbird is an all-day kind of place, with its bar area filling up quickly on Friday and Saturday nights. Their food is pretty good, and I am keen to go back and try out their cocktails – perhaps one to save for nearer Christmas(..!)?
The blackbird seems to be one of Edinburgh’s trendiest bars of the moment, owned by the same people as Hamilton’s and Treacle, it’s bound to be decent. Myself and a friend visited for after-work dinner, we went straight in for the mains. I ordered the Sticky lemon chicken with udon noodles and my friend had the Beef burger with twice-cooked chips. The lemon chicken dish was seriously good, so good that if I go back to The Blackbird then I will definitely re-order it!
I really like The Blackbird for drinks. It can get crowded by I really like the atmosphere, music and the staff. It's usually buzzing and mostly very crowded on Fridays and Saturdays. I still need to visit them for food so watch this space for more to follow! :)
Meeting up with my friend L for lunch doesn’t happen too often. She is usually whizzing all over Edinburgh in her role as a carer. Lunching at the Blackbird proved the ideal place to catch up. Sticky lemon chicken with udon noodles. We wished the day had been hot and sunny so we could have basked on the welcoming terrace but it was June and of course chilly.
We went today for lunch and it was lovely!
They have a brilliant cocktail menu with loads of choice all split down by the type of drink eg long, martini. That way you can decide on the type of drink as well as the ingredients.
They have a good selection of food for lunch and offer gluten free etc options.
I had a tempura prawn and bacon wrap with hot sauce and chips which wasn't that big but was really tasty. The salty bacon went so well with the prawns and chips were proper ones. My friend had a super food salad with chicken that looked good too. Both our meals were around £9 which is ok for lunch.
The staff were really friendly too!
We visited the Blackbird one mid-week evening and were surprised to find the place so busy. We had a quick drink at the bar whilst our table was cleared and it gave us a chance to take in our surroundings. There was a pretty tasty cocktail menu and they have two very comfy looking sofas which would come in handy on a lazy sunday afternoon.
On our visit we had the beer battered king prawns and the coconut chicken to start. We didn't expect the starters to be as big as they were. You could definitely order a few between friends and snack as you sample a cocktail or two. The mains didn't disappoint either. The stak pie was packed full of steak pieces and came with a healthy sized serving of chips. The goats cheese and mushroom burger was delicious and to make it even tastier I asked for some bacon on it as well which they were more than happy to do.
By the time we were leaving the place was buzzing and had a great atmosphere. We can't wait to go back and sample the cocktails.
We went along to The Blackbird the other week on a Tuesday evening to sample their offerings. We had both heard good things and were very much looking forward to our visit. Initial thoughts on walking through the door was that it had more of a pub which served food feeling. For some reason I had it in my head that it was a restaurant. We were warmly greeted after we entered and told our table was almost ready (we were early) and did we want to have a quick drink at the bar, and unsurprisingly indeed we did want to have a drink at the bar. I was pleased to see the excellent Williams Brothers Joker IPA on tap and swiftly ordered a pint. Miss Edinburger went for the equally tasty Sierra Nevada (I’ve clearly thought her a thing or two about beer). When standing at the bar enjoying our beer we noticed some comfy looking sofas at a couple of the tables, the bar area had a cosy feel and struck me as a perfect spot for a quiet Sunday afternoon drink. Although trying to get out of those sofas after a few may prove trickier than it looks! There was also a number of tasty sounding efforts on the cocktail menu up on the wall I knew we would have to come back and try a few of those bad boys regardless of how good the food would turn out to be. A few minutes at the bar and our table was ready. The friendly waitress showed us through to the dining area which is in a separate area at the other side of the back wall of the bar. The food menu was impressive, there’s a good compact selection of tasty sounding dishes with plenty variation. Our initial plans on sharing a starter went out the window when we couldn’t decide between the Innis & Gunn beer battered tiger prawns with honey beer dipping syrup or the coconut crusted chicken with peanut butter and chilli hummus so we did the sensible thing and ordered both. For main course I went for the pie of the day which was steak and haggis with all butter puff pastry and twice cooked cut chips. Miss Edinburger went for the Mushroom
Recommended. Friendly staff, delicious food, amazingly yummy cocktails!
I came here on Saturday with friends for a meal. We started our evening in the beer garden at the back which was a nice hidden spot and considering we were just up from Tollcross, before moving in doors to our table.
There was a 'restaurant' side and then a bar side - which to be honest had I come here just for drinks I can't imagine where I would stand as it isn't a big area. Unless you are forced to go outside?? I would definitely say this is the type of place to have dinner and then keep your table for the evening to then carry on your night with drinks.
The service was absolutely briliant. The staff were all very very friendly but naturally friendly. They were apparantly a man down that evening but I wouldn't say I had noticed they were all working well and were pleasantly attentive to our table. I had the chic pea burger to eat - just a one course meal. The burger was very good and the serving style was 'rustic' being served on wooden boards and paper and then the chips served in a little metallic pot. The food was really good, I really enjoyed my burger- hvaing recently decided I like chic peas!!
Had a very pleasant evening here, food, drinks and service all really good. Although I didn't have any cocktails there was a lovely looking list of them!
Continue south of Levin street and you will stumble upon The Blackbird Bar, this is a cool stylish bar with a vast selection of draught beers.
I recently made the visit to this bar on a work trip from London, when stepping inside it was uncanny - it has the same environment of a bar in shoreditch or islington without been jammed full of pretentious ‘instagram my vietnamese flute while I tweet a selfie’ hipsters.
I went on a Saturday night and it had a decent crowd of young people who did not want to travel into old/new town. The drinks are reasonably priced and has comfortable seating.
One side of the venue is reserved for dining which I unfortunately did not get to experience. For a friendly bar with a selection of ales and affordable mixers I would recommend The Blackbird - great place to start and end the night without going too far from home.
Stopped in here on the way home. A beautifully presented pub. We had lunch and were pleasantly greeted by a fancy new menu with some delicious food. Can reccomend the 'Carne ASADA Fries'. Everything was great, do yourself a favour and get down here!
The Blackbird is great. It's got good food, with a few veggie/vegan options, a separate area for dining if you want it, and good service. It has modern bar/pub decor with character and lots of exposed stone. Interesting and comfortable and it feels good. The highlight for sure is a large and interesting beer garden, with lots of seating and cover and some heaters. It's a good spot for most weather. One of very few places like this in the Tollcross / Bruntsfield area. Definitely recommended.
Lovely spot on Morrison Street for a drink with friends. Service was quick, polite and friendly. Seating choices are comfortable and the place looks modern, plus cosy.
My partner and I have been here twice in the last few weeks, and it was fantastic on both occasions! Hannah served us the 2nd time, and she was absolutely lovely. Love their approach to sustainability with local / seasonal garnishes too. The wings, burgers & cocktails were amazing!
It’s a nice little restaurant to have some drinks, they also have a nice beer garden which is a bit more spacious than the inside. There tends to be a great atmosphere and with a wide variety of drink options.
I come here semi-regularly and each time I try a new cocktail and I've never been disappointed! Friendly atmosphere, lovely staff & unique cocktails 🍹
We arrived without a reservation to a busy restaurant but the staff managed to make room for us. We ordered a cocktail and a burger each.
I ordered the the made in Japan cocktail, which had a nice citrus flavour but lacked in whisky for my taste. My girlfriend ordered a raspberry and ginger beer mocktail which had a sharp initial taste and a sweet ginger beer finish.
The chicken burger was okay, a little dry and not very crispy, but the beef burger was absolutely delicious.
The meal and drinks were more expensive than I'd have liked for their quality, but it was a good time and it's a lovely place worth spending an hour enjoying the food and drink.
Fantastic atmosphere with great drinks. Brilliant beer garden also.
Only stopped for a beer.. but really liked the place.. only wished I lived in Edinburgh 😃
Beautiful surroundings, fantastic food and friendly staff. Could not ask for more
Officially my favourite pub now. Staff make all the difference; they are welcoming, lovely and friendly. Staff helped my mum with her shopping bag and offered us a table when one was available (we were happy to drink at the bar).
Atmosphere is lovely and welcoming.
Drinks were delicious
