My friend and I visited without a reservation on a Friday evening. The restaurant was busy so we were seated close to another couple who were deep in conversation. The restaurant is small and tables close together so do not expect privacy. We ordered a starter each, were offered water and glasses for the wine we had brought along. They sell beer and a limited selection of wine by the glass. The starters were fine and soon eaten before the mains arrived. We each had roast duck with noodles and bean sprouts in a Malaysian sause. It was very tasty the only down side is the way the duck is cut up - with a chopper straight through the bone so expect little shards of bone when eating. However overall very good food and reasonably priced. But it is full around 7 pm to 8 pm - go earlier or later for a bit of space.
If you're looking for a quiet, old-world, homely restaurant away from the bustle, this is the place. This small restaurant run by a couple, serves some great Malaysian food. I'd like to taste their chicken curry rice and chicken red curry again if I return to Edinburgh.
Good quality Malaysian in a basic setting. Very reasonable prices. Meals came out very promptly. Only downfall was the roti was not house made. Noodles were exceptional though.
If I do miss home then this is definitely the place that I'll be coming to. The fried rice is awesome. Tasty and spicy just how I like it. It comes in a really really generous portion. So if you don't like eating too much, one portion is good for sharing. I also like their Big bowl choices. My favorite is the Tom Yum Big Bowl with Udon. The taste of the Tom Yum soup is not as authenthic as Thai's Tom Yum, but it's great. And don't miss their Nasi Lemak with Chicken Curry/beef. It's delicious!
...raves about this Malaysian restaurant. When we were standing outside and James said that he liked it too, I was over the moon. To
Kampong Ah Lee doesn’t fail to stand out because of its bright red exterior and walk-in you must. This place is a hidden Malaysian delight and if you are in the mood for something spicy. The interior is unpretentious and simple, with scattered seating and a comfortable lull present in the restaurant at all times because of how popular the place must be. I must say that I made a mental note multiple times during the course of my dinner to come back here again.
Again, this might not be the perfect choice for you if your spice-threshold isn’t high but I still cannot get over how flavoursome and aromatic the food was. I opted for the Big Bowl of Tom Yum Rice Noodle and Sea Bass. My first reaction to the arrival of the dish was of utter joy because of how hungry I was at the time and how huge the portion was. Once I dug in, I couldn’t stop eating, literally till I couldn’t move. It had the right hint of lemongrass, light and slippery rice noodles and fresh Sea Bass and spice. Again, I did notice people around me at the other tables drinking glass after glass of water, tearing up and coughing a lot – but not giving up still; it’s all worth it!
What did put a damper on the experience was the Cold Malaysian Milo. The waitress put it across as being a cold version of Hot Chocolate but what it turned out to be was a watered down lukewarm chocolate water. Quite terrible.
In a nutshell: This would be my go-to place for a wholesome and filling meal in Edinburgh, even though it has the most un-assuming look from the outside.
Very delicious food, lots of options of spicy and non spicy dishes. Besides seafood and meat there are also plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. Very friendly and caring staff. The space is cozy and compact. Better to book in advance, especially for large groups during busy times, but if only a few hungry people there should be space available anytime ☺️
Visited a few times and would visit again! 😋
Travelled from Leeds for a short trip and was craving authentic Malaysian food after a year of not having it. This definitely hits the spot and I had such a filling meal I was bloated for the next hour! Happy to feel a bit closer to home. Food was so amazing, will definitely want to come back to try more of the menu. Had a couple more side dishes that me and my friend finished before we even took pictures so that explains it all.
Recommended restaurant for Malaysian foods in Edinburgh! Nice and cozy ambience with lots of Malaysian elements. Serve a wide variety of Malaysian staples. Nasi lemak tasted just like in Malaysia. The laksa and chicken rice looked good too. Definitely worth a try for those craving for Malaysia foods!
Everything here is so delicious! It’s the restaurant we most look forward to coming back to in Edinburgh. Since last time we were here, I’ve become pescatarian but I can certify that the vegan lamb rendang is delicious, as are the conventional versions of everything we’ve had.

Authentic Malaysian food. My favourite is crispy pork and Curry Lasa! The service is always good. You will need to book a table for supper.
Amazing food very authentic tasty and fresh ingredients! We got take away and will definitively return. Totally recommend!
We came here for the Hainanese Chicken Rice. We ended up ordering other zichar dishes - sambal kankong and mapo tofu. Although the latter was somewhat disappointing, everything else was as close as you can get to the real Malaysian food.
Last week dining here, took me straight back seven plus years. The decor has been modified for the better, it’s more stream line and practical and I’m delighted to report that the food is just as outstanding as it always was.
This is no fine dining. It’s not contemporary and sleek. You come for the food and the friendly smiles (hidden behind a mask but you know). One thing is 100% guaranteed, you’ll leave with a very full belly and wish you were back inside eating it all over again.
Their menu is reduced at the moment due to a lack of staff (many of whom are still in Malaysia) but you honestly wouldn’t really notice. There is plenty of scope across noodles, rice, veg, meat, sides and soups to satiate even the pickiest of eaters. Favourite dishes include Laksa Noodle, Rendang Beef and Malaysian Spice Aubergine.
Dishes tend to arrive when they are ready, so there are no real starters but the first dishes to our table where the 5 piece Satay Chicken (£6.80) and the Roti with Curry Sauce (£5.00)
Chicken Satay was succulent with a chargrilled flavour. The satay sauce was of a good consistency and so good, you’ll end up dunking everything else in it too.
The Roti is a must order item. It’s ever so slightly sweet with gorgeous folds of cracked flatbread. The curry sauce brings a warming heat and happily will soak into this beautiful flatbread when dunked.
Rendang Beef and Coconut Rice were items we both wanted, so our server suggested the Beef Nasi Lemak (£10.50). A super sized large portion that also comes with peanuts, crispy fried anchovies, sambal, cucumber and an egg.
The rice was sticky and fragrant and the beef delivering on the spice front. The Nasi Lemak for me brings a true sense of Malaysia to the table with tropical aromatic notes of coconut, chillies and spice.
Noodles were next and CharSiu Noodle (£8.90) was up. Deeply spiced succulent pork strips lay atop a mound of soft fat noodles and underneath lay blanched pak choi or choy sum. There isn’t too much spice here and little heat but it’s so compliments the pork and noodles, that you’ll be slurping until the last noodle is gone.
My delight was so evident when I seen that what use to be my favourite dish was still on the menu and I was delirious when it tasted the same. Freaking yum!
This is the Golden spicy Chicken (£10.80). Crispy gnarly nuggets of chicken so soft and tender they melt in your mouth. The crunchy outside allows the sweet stick sauce to clingy lovingly to it and you hit the jackpot when you find a piece pocketed with pools of sticky sauce. Eat it with the slices of chilli to give it a kick, or just eat it all to yourself. You can choose.
The food here is incredible. It’s one of those places, that when you leave, you talk about the food all the way home; you text your friends about this incredible food you’ve just eaten and take pics to show family. It really genuinely is that good.
The staff are brilliant, keeping your ice cold beers topped up and happy to provide descriptions of the food and make suggestions based on your likes and dislikes, and the volume of heat you’d like for your food.
Their slogan is Malaysian Delight and I can confirm that it is so. We are so lucky to have this hidden gem on our doorstep.
We were really craving Malaysian food at 9PM and found this place open. Luckily, they were still taking orders.
We ordered Laksa and chicken curry noodles, which were served in about 10 minutes.
The Laksa broth was amazing, soothing to the senses on a cold Edinburgh night. Generous ingredients, slurpy noodles, tofu, chicken etc. Medium spicy.
The curry chicken noodles is a drier version, but the curry has a lot of spicy niceness to it, though not overpowering. Chicken was soft and tender. Noodles was well cooked.
Cravings satisfied!
Excellent food and service, I'm definitely going to visit again.
