Although our server wasnt a barrel of laughs, he was accommodating in letting me swap the veggie haggis for extra mushrooms. I had a quick taste of my son's veggie haggis and actually it was very nice and spicy. The veggie sausages (it's a vegan/vegetarian restaurant) were the best veggie version I've had and the mushrooms were to die for. The breakfast also included a herby tomato; what seemed like home cooked baked beans, toast, and eggs which you could choose to have scrambled or poached. It seemed to be a family friendly place, there were several children in while we were there. There's not much ambience but we were there early in the morning, and noticed that there seemed to be a separate evening dining area, which probably feels very different. Not particularly cheap, but I'd go again as it was good value.
Hendersons was in my list even before we moved to the city. I am so glad we tried them.
I had the vegetarian Fish and Chips (fish replaced with grilled halloumi and chips were the sweet potato ones) served with cream and greens dip. My husband had the veg haggis. Both these dishes were excellent (I loved mine more), and I am glad having ordered what we did!
I will definitely check out their vegan menu next time.
Moolah – Approx. 25 GBP for 2 mains
Pros – creative and well tasting food, extensive options in all course category, comfortable seating, extremely polite and helpful staff, neat décor
Recommended – Weekend meals with family.
Great place for a quick, delicious, healthy mid-week lunch. Food for all tastes and dietary options. Lovely atmosphere with plenty seating for meetings, or groups/families. The hot meals are always varied, the salads are delicious, and there are always several vegan options. Bread is baked fresh daily and is really good! Make sure you try the cherry pie!
Get yourself down to Henderson's for some finger-lickin' worthy salads. You get a choice of sizes for your salad, but I choose to get 3 different types. Tasty, wholesome, and piled high which is just the way I like it! Their traybakes are pretty good too...shame they were so delicious I had ate it before I even took a picture!
I first visited Henderson's only a year ago, when I was in Edinburgh staying with relatives (I hail from Western Australia), but I was taken with it from the first bite. It's really everything I could want in a casual restaurant: it isn't pretentious; it has a great variety of food to choose from; and it's all vegetarian.
I come to Henderson's whenever I can, and have pushed my family to head there multiple times on trips to Scotland.

This is a cute little place tucked away on Hanover Street with a decent variety of vegetarian- and gluten free!- food available. We were seated downstairs where there was live acoustic music and we were serenaded as we ate. I personally feel the decor could do with a refresh downstairs but the atmosphere is nice and it's a place often overlooked by tourist so it's not too busy. I had the risotto, which was the right consistency and tasted good. My friend chose the haggis money bag which was a big lump in the middle of the plate. Inelegant but tasty, she did enjoy it!
Atmospheric, live music, service is so-so but excellent veggie fare. The Baked stuffed aubergine was excellent, although I prob wouldn't order the "Haggis money bag" again. Overall v good.
Great Food. Wandering around New Town 3 hours after arriving for the festival, being overwhelmed by the choice of places to eat could have led to a culinary nightmare but luckily we stumbled upon Hendersons Bistro. We shared a bruschetta and the blue cheese and walnut salad to start. Then I had enchillada while my companion, the veg haggis and clapshot. It was all served promptly , looked and tasted great,. We were tempted by puddings - the honey and marscapone cheesecake was delicious and my affagato just enough to round the meal off nicely. All in all a lovely dinner in a busy little room. But they don't need my praises - those in the know in Edinburgh, obviously flock to the place. Long may it continue.
A great little find by complete coincidence. We didn't even realise it was a vegetarian restaurant until we got to order! The food was good but not outstanding. The soup was very watery and bread a bit dry but the hot meals were much better. Not full of hemp wearing vegans but a quirky little place to grab a nice lunch!
It's often a hit and miss with this place -- the salads especially as sometimes they're fabulously fresh and delicious and zingy, yet sometimes they're bland or overseasoned. However, it's reasonably priced, the choices are aplenty, the atmosphere is nice and the people are incredible. That's why I was a regular there when I was in Edinburgh.
Great vegetarian and vegan food. The live music adds to the charm of an already beautiful place. Would highly recommend this restaurant and definitely return on my next trip to Edinburgh.
This is a very nice, top vegan restaurant that will not dissapoint! We ate full vegan & vegetarian breakfast that lasted us for many hours, we even skipped lunch that day, and in the evening we shared nut rolls as a starter, and had Mediterranean pasta and Summer bowl for mains. The pasta was on a spicy side, so if you don't tolerate it- ask for it without chilli 👌.
The restaurant staff is friendly and helpful, the interior design is simple yet modern and atmospheric. In the evenings they have live music, such a bonus!
Literally the best meal I've had from a vegan restaurant! The wine was super and I took my non vegan friend. He said it was the best meal he had in a long time. Was so worried we weren't going to get a table, as we didn't book. They managed to find a table for us. I was blown away. The cheese cake should be permanently on the menu. The thai butternut squash soup was so different and wonderfully flavoured. The haggis was really good, but I would have loved more of the whiskey sauce as it was delicious. Brilliant experience and dining. I would recommend booking, as a lot of people were turned away while we were there

The restaurant is downstairs, the one on the upper level is more of a deli and grab & go shop. I was here for breakfast and had the Vegan Pancakes [£6.95] with blueberries, bananas & maple syrup. It was more of the thick American style pancakes, but not that fluffy. Still I enjoyed it and it’s really delicious, topped with a nice amount of bananas and blueberries, served with a side of maple syrup. It was a satisfying plate of pancakes for the price. I also had the Vegan Carrot Cake [£4.50] served with a side of plant milk which was really good. It was moist, tender and fluffy with just the right level of sweetness even with the frosting. It was jam packed with flavour and rich with plenty of carrots, nuts and such.
The staff were friendly. They could be for more helpful (especially as a first timer) in introducing how the restaurant works and what it has to offer (i.e. menu, food at the counter etc.). The restaurant is eclectic and cosy with a homey décor. There place is spacious too with plenty of tables for even big groups. Fresh and delicious vegetarian and vegan food and even cakes that are done well at affordable prices, I can see why they are so popular and doing well (with several locations)!
I can't say enough about the food here but I'll try... We had as much as we could because it was so incredibly good! From taste to presentation I was really impressed. Service was great and and we didn't wait to sit. (But a reservation is highly recommended because the space is small - we got lucky!) Food came at a good pace and we fully enjoyed it all. I'm going to miss this place - would definitely go back!
Had an amazing vegan breakfast this morning! So tasty 😋 would definitely come back when we are next time in Edinburgh. Would recommend this place as a much to visit for breakfast at least to vegetarians and vegans. Great alternative to Pret-a-mange
Lovely restaurant with amazing staff and awesome food. It’s been a while that we’ve found a place that was just perfect in all regards. Spoilt for choices we went with the Thai salad bowl which was absolutely delicious. Service was professional and very personable. Drinks were delicious and the live music just set the tone of everything wonderful. Highly recommend this place!
Fab little lunch spot I like to visit whenever I’m in Edinburgh! Last time I tried the vegan haggis wrap (made from beans) , the spanakopita, and a donut! They’ve got lovely drinks and coffee as well! Nice staff too. It can get a bit crowded during peak hours, but overall I recommend!
Plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options in the deli. Everything looks delicious and my soup was excellent. There is also space to sit and eat inside. Very good place to eat at any time of the day, fresh products with great taste.
Absolutely stunning restaurant in a basement. It's really cozy down there especially with the live music in the evening. The food is completely vegetarian or vegan and really interesting. Furthermore it tastes excellent and its not that expensive. I absolutely recommend the vegetarian haggis and the every day changing chef's course. Besides the desert I had on these day (it was something with matcha) was more than excellent. I advise everybody to try this.
Lovely Staff! AMAZING food! Visited here on Good Friday. We did not book, it was already busy with only 2 available tables. There was only 2 of us so we managed to get a seat. The menu is absolutely delicious, a great selection of things but all with carefully selected ingredients to give a contemporary twist to each dish. So nice to look at a menu and be able to choose from everything on the list!! After finally deciding, I had a celeriac gnocchi with date whiskey cream, fresh figs and raw cacao - which was really unusual but tasty. my boyfriend had a roasted cauliflower and buffalo soup - sounds simple but this was actually incredible! We then shared a main of pasta and the vegan cashew pesto tasted amazing. I just also wanted to mention how helpful Lucia, our waitress was, she was the only one on the floor that night and managed to keep everyone happy and food/drinks came swiftly.
Highly recommend to everyone! Maybe book if more than 2?
THANK YOU :D

Absolutely gorgeous vegan food, both for taste and presentation. Such a lovely atmosphere with few tables and one very attentive waitress. We were lucky to get a table without booking! I'll definitely be retiring on my next trip to Edinburgh.
Absolutely wonderful place. Was very surprised at amazing vegetarian food. Quality was way beyond my expectation. Veg haggis was wonderful. Very nicely prepared beet salad. Never tasted such stuff anywhere. The Coffee martini was out of the world. Very lively music performed by a live band. A very courteous and excellent service by the staff. Would highly recommend a visit to this place.
Hendersons is an oasis of vegan food in the heart of a very meat-and-potatoes loving city. It's a small restaurant with just one waitress and one chef and seats about 30 people tops, which means even at 4pm on a Thursday it was quite busy. We ordered the asparagus / courgette starter followed by the vegetarian haggis and the black bean pudding. Everything was really delicious, fresh, and hefty despite being vegan. The haggis especially had the "correct" consistency/texture and tasted quite flavorful and almost fatty, although made out of lentils! The highlight for me was the mashed turnips and fried onions in the black bean pudding dish, though.
Service was quite slow but that's not a criticism -- small staff, hungry and friendly patrons, etc. Just be prepared!
Came in for diner by suggestion of a local.
What an incredible find!
The shop above is great selling, loads of nice stuff, but as soon as you get into the restaurant, it's so beautiful.
The layout is great with a real rustic setting, and the atmosphere was brilliant too, clearly a favourite of locals.
It was fairly packed out with customers, which is why I was so surprised when my food came at a really quick, and when it did, man so good.
I geuinely havent had food this good for a long time.
The staff were all very accommodating and were happy to give their own suggestions when asked, really helped.
And when the bill came, I was very surprised to see how cheap it was, I would've honestly paid double.
All in all, this without a doubt will be on my must go places in Edinburgh, defo should be on yours too.
Absolutely brilliant
Really lovely atmosphere inside the restaurant- it’s quite small, only 1 waiter and 1 chef working, but food still came out very quickly. We arrived around 7:30pm and a few menu items had run out, so I’d recommend arriving earlier if you want the full selection!
I felt that one of the main dishes (a jackfruit curry) was well done, however the teriyaki tofu / rice dish didn’t quite come together for me. Next time I think I would ask for a recommendation from the waiter!
Great small place to eat at when you’re in Edinburgh!
After reading everywhere that you have to go to Hendersons if you visit Edinburgh, I decided to go and I wasn’t disappointed! I had the haggis with purple potatoes which was great and made me full.
Afterwards I had the raspberry cheesecake, which was not on menu. IT WAS AMAZING!! You could tell it had some kind of coconut cream, but the flavor wasn’t overwhelming.
I really like this vegan restaurant, been there already twice in less than 24 hours. First visit got Cauliflower soup tasted so wonderful, 7 pound, drinking water for free. Second visit got Tofu teriyaki Buddha bowl, 13 pound, needed extra rice for 1,5 pound then chocolate nut cake, 5,5 pound. Highly recommended for all lovely vegans!
I was introduced to Henderson's on my first full day in Edinburgh. I found this unpretentious establishment to be exactly what many people (self included) would imagine a warm, inviting Scottish experience to be. Just a few steps down from the sidewalk or a few steps up from the sidewalk you are welcomed into a warm and homey atmosphere. There are plenty of places to sit, some tables less obvious as they are hidden amongst the nooks and crannies of the restaurant. With a plethora of vegetarian selections, warm and cold offerings, decisions will be hard to come by. I ate here 4 times over the course of a week and I can tell you everything I selected, was "off the chart" delicious. I am an American from California. I believe I have a good understanding of quality food and ingredients. I enjoyed immensely the winter root stew served with a mix of potatoes and turnips, topped with a savory light gravy. It was perfect for the cold Scottish day ahead. I can also recommend the vegetarian haggis served with a lovely whipped mixture of root vegetables. This I I enjoyed the very next day. It's full of beans, oats and a mixture of spices and other ingredients that are sure to warm you from the inside out. The cold salads are all made with fresh, flavorful legumes and vegetables, lightly flavored with various oils and vinegars (just enough to tease your tongue). The tea is hot and a perfect accompaniment with the date scones. Upstairs I enjoyed (on different days, mind you) the falafel wrap (immensely!). I found myself craving it for days afterwards, though upon my return I had to give the Thai nut burger a try at the recommendation of my local friend. It had just enough of a kick to gently wake your taste buds without the fire alarm sounding. All the meals I had here were filling without the bloating feeling of filling (that's a bit of a tongue twister) and satiated me through the day (I generally only indulged in one meal per day on this trip for this reason). The staff is welcoming and friendly and will happily help you sort through the menu, make recommendations or explain the different ingredients of the menu items. Knowledgeably, patiently and kindly, I might add. Having been an established business since 1962 (an amazingly forward thinking couple) speaks strongly about this iconic eatery in Edinburgh. My recommendation: DON'T MISS IT!!
