Absolutely superb for a cheap eat. Meal deal is excellent with a starter and box of noodle with drink included. The squid is delicious and laced with garlic and chilli, always very crisp. Great choice of meat, veg and sauces. Recommend the black pepper sauce. Service is always super fast.
If you’re wanting a crowd pleasing cheap eat, then you can’t go wrong with Red Box. Their menu is excellent value for money and their “build your own” menu system means that you can have your perfect noodle dish, every time. It’s a fab wee place and I heartily recommend it!
Healthy Fast Food. Only 2 minutes from the university, this place is usually queued out the door with hungry students. It's basic inside but bright and spacious. I opted for the newly introduced soup noodles and was not disappointed. I had hardly sat down when the large steaming bowl was placed before me. Fresh, tasty and at a bargain price, it was just what the doctor ordered. Well worth a visit and recommended.

As a Chinese person, I'm quite pernickety about 'authentic' Chinese food. I've found it quite difficult to really give my seal of approval for a lot of Chinese takeaway and sit-in restaurants around Edinburgh, only because dishes have been changed so much to suit local preferences. Red Box is one place that since I was recommended by a friend to try it out, I absolutely love to visit to satisfy my Asian food cravings and often recommend friends to go here.
When you walk through the door, you peruse the menu wall on the left side and choose your noodle, meat (optional), vegetables, sauce and any condiments. The great thing about this restaurant is they actually serve Asian noodles and also have real Hong Kong street foods (like wor tiep) as well as Westernised dishes (prawn toast) to suit both Chinese and Western palates. I can never get enough of this place.
My favourite choice of a meal? Ho fun noodles with chicken or roast duck with pak choi, carrots, bean sprouts, shiitake mushrooms, oyster sauce and a side dish of wor tiep or their crispy squid...and the prerequisite bottle of Irn Bru of course!

It has great decor and a cool vibe to it and it's handy location near students and pubs makes this place busy busy. There normally is long queues so calling for a collection saves time.
I completely pig out here because I know the food is just excellent. Their standards are always consistent, fast, fresh and pretty healthy. For a noodle lover, this is just a treat!
I'd opt for anyone to give this place a try, and go for unusual combinations too as they too taste really great. Try the Wor Teip (dumplings) they're fresh and amazingly light. then Udon noodles with roast duck, shiitake mushrooms, pak choi, baby corn and tomato sauce. YUMMMMM!!!!

The endless quest to find cheap outside food that can be eaten by people with awkward dietary needs...It's like a pick'n'mix - you choose the noodles, meat (or not), vegetables and sauce. Pay the money (cash only!) and a few minutes later you have a delicious box of nomnomnom to sit in or takeaway. No gluten for you? Have some rice noodles and the sweet chilli sauce! Vegan? Not a problem. Cheap and flexible, a regular fixture in my life.
The Red Box is the best-buddy for the University students as it provides fresh, varied and mouth watering noodles. Either dine-in or take away, this place has never let me and my friends down with the taste and the quality. This is next to University buildings and easily accessible if you are living in Old Town. Choose your own veggies, meat, sauce and the type of noodle, to taste the best. I want to grab one now, but I am far away!
As someone who was dying to find a Chinese takeaway that has the iconic boxes I almost weed myself with excitement! Me and my partner got the sharing platter for the starter so although the portion was small for a platter the quality of the food was immense. Along with 2 dips the meat was moist and perfectly seasoned. Not too spicy or too greasy. For the main I got a stir fry with egg noodles - king prawns, chicken, onions and peppers with soya sauce. It was delicious and was certainly a large portion despite the deceptively small box. With all the variations in veg, meat, noodles and sauce you have a lot to choose from. We ended our meal with fortune cookies (4 for £1). It was the perfect Chinese experience but relatively healthy with the right amount to satisfy you but not give you indigestion. The service was incredibly quick and highly competent.
Went here in search of proper take away noodles in proper wee boxes and found something wonderful! The infinitely customisable menu suits the mood of many mealtimes! We got the starter platter to share, the only criticism of which would be that there should've been more chicken and spring rolls!! My noodle box consisted of chicken, egg noodles, broccoli, baby sweet corn, onion and peppers, all reposing in a black bean hot tub of delight. Very filling and the fortune cookie to finish has given me a lot to think about. Sadly my attempts to eat with chopsticks were ill-fated and very early on I resorted to a fork. I can also confirm that the boxes are indeed red.
It is what it is. You can easily order at a tablet or order by person. Meanwhile quiet times (been on Monday evening) 2 bowls arrived in 7 minutes after order placed, cooked to perfection. The service is also great as our server even came to double check as one of our food highlighted no sauce and she recommended a great one instead (free of charge). All in all is an amazing place for quick and delicious food in an OK interior. But honestly, once you taste the food, interior won't ever matter.

Just had my dinner here yesterday, I ordered ramen with beef and choose pak choy, mushroom and carrot for vegetables with malaysian chili.
It was really nice, they cooked it very fast, and only cost me £7.70
Basically u need to pick your noodle, meat/seafood, 3 vegetables and the sauce.
It is near Edinburgh University.

If you can handle spicy food, try the rice with beef black pepper sauce, so good.
They always cook with very sttong fire, you should choose veggies that is quite hard like broccoli (my personal preference)
