Passing St Patrick Square on my way home, I thought I’d duck in and grab a couple of burritos from Illegal Jack’s. I’d been to the outlet on Lothian Road back in the day and followed their Kickstarter (or “Jackstarter”) closely, so it was about time I saw how they were getting along.

The restaurant itself is great – I instantly felt happy and welcomed in to the space. Compared to the cavernous white interior of its predecessor, the new site felt more intimate, trendy and relaxed. For better or worse, their target market is clear from the outset – and they also have a strong presence.

Illegal Jacks previously was situated on Lothian Road and had rapidly become an institution in Edinburgh before it’s untimely demise through no fault of its own. I was pleased to see it was able to re-establish itself elsewhere and in a better location for me. I will declare my interest here as I did contribute to the Kickstarter campaign to get Illegal Jacks back on track.

It’s great to have Illegal Jacks back again. It’s a bit more off the beaten track now but I have no doubt that it will do well. With the festival crowds, the new students in September and its dedicated cult following, there will always be a steady stream of burrito lovers heading to this fantastic tex-mex joint!

Delicious, you can go hard on pepper sauces, there are not that spicy and they are super tasty. Price looks odd for a "cheap" place but you will get a lot of food, you can share almost everything in the menu if you are not starving. Food arrived really quick too.

Great place, good central location. Food was great, chili bowl was delicious, vegan cheese was really good as well! Staff friendly, service quick. Was happy to see intolerance information on the menu as well. Will be back to try more gluten free options!

Me and my guy are big fans of this place. Both gutted it closed at its old location on Lothian Road, and very happy when it returned (he donated to their Kickstarter- that's love!). It's not as big as it was before, but still plays great music and serves amazing food. Order at the counter to take away or sit in, and they'll bring it when ready. Haggis burrito is quite a tasty novelty (there's a vegetarian version as well). There's a fair bit of customisation available- pick your beans, jalapeños or no, guacamole is extra.

Chili is excellent! Would recommend getting an extra side of nachos to finish it off nicely as a meal. Atmosphere of the place was great, staff were super friendly, and everything was super clean.

I’ve eaten a lot of burritos but there is something about the ones at Illegal Jack’s that just make them taste better. Great range of filling and they are put together well, none of that loose roll business here!

💯 👐 down 👇 the best 🌯 I've had. Great staff too and affordable prices. Not far from the Royal Mile so location is pretty good also.

Excellent food and atmosphere. The burritos are huge and we'll priced for the quality and size.

I eat here quite regularly and its hard to go wrong with anything on the menu. It sounds bizarre on paper, but the haggis burrito is great and ends up being a perfect platform for hot sauce (provided free of charge, including several brand names as well as constantly changing inhouse concoctions) and the other fillings. Good for a quick, filling lunch for under £10.

5 stars without hesitation although it could be a bit cheaper. You do pay for the quality and size of portions. I don't recall having better tasting or served burrito in Edinburgh. The staff is well qualified and have the best customer approach.

The only place I go for burritos. Great staff, reasonable prices, dangerously convenient for a lunch stop off, some good local beers. I recommend repeat visits to fine tune your perfect burrito options! Also I have never had to wait long, even during a busy lunchtime while parked riskily... Edit: still awesome

I'm a basic burrito brother. Steak was good. Avocado was good. Need to try the vegan cheese next time. Although I'll never truly enjoy a burrito as I don't enjoy how much it resembles what comes out the other end as I put it in my mouth... I dunno maybe I need to ser my doctor or chew my food more.

Service + Portion Size, this place is a winner. if you are not hungry just don't even bother. a burrito for someone with a big appetite, you will not leave this place hungry. Service is always great and everyone is very friendly, I swear they must take classes to learn how to roll those burritos so well! the only downside of this place is the prices. Very easy to go in and drop 20 quid. Would go much more often if they had deals or specials but I suppose with no competition (and great food) they can do what they please with the prices!

I've been to many places for burritos in Edinburgh over the last 6 years, but Jack's continues to be by far the best quality, freshest, tastiest food. If the thing you care about the most is eating the best burrito, go here. Half/half Chicken / Haggis is so good!

I have never had anything from this place that I didn't love. It's quite simply that good. The portions are ridiculously big (I never finish them) and it's all reasonably priced. And they do love a margarita in there. Humongous burritos and margaritas. What more do you want?
