The staff here really are on another level, I cannot fault this restaurant at all. The food was delicious and fairly priced, the vegetarian haggis especially deserves a mention. Huge selection of food for all diets and requirements, as well as amazing dessert cocktails and alcoholic drinks. The atmosphere is alive yet relaxing.
Great for brunch! Always has been up there with one of the best brunch spots at that side of town...and a lot more relaxed now as opposed to before the refurbishment. Great spot for a cheeky cocktail or dinner if around the area too!
My weekend just isn't fulfilled without brunch. This was my second visit to Montpeliers but my first visit for brunch.
On my previous dining experience I had the nachos, which were very tasty but a huge portion! This time I opted for the Eggs Benedict with salmon. They were extremely tasty and the eggs were cooked perfectly; the portion size was the right amount. I accompanied my eggs with an orange juice, which was lovely and refreshing, but I prefer fresh orange juice with pulp in it.
Both times, the people I have been with have really enjoyed their meals and the atmosphere is always enjoyable. It is a good set up for any time of day.
The only issue is that because it is so busy you may have to wait for a table - so go a bit early than you plan to eat.
My typical Saturday go to nice atmosphere and perfect for a cheeky g&t. Great value 2 for £10 menu makes for a good refuel between bruntsfield wanders
I always enjoy coming back to this restaurant. I used to live just across the street and really enjoyed having this amazing place in my neighborhood. It's great for lunch, dinner or just a drink. I shared fish and chips and mac and cheese with Barbitchka during my most recent visit and I loved both of the dishes. The outside seating is great especially during summer. Since this place is usually packed it's good to book a table in advance. The staff is always friendly and very efficient. I'll be back!
A decent breakfast cafe on your doorstep is essential for good weekend living, and where better to brunch than Montys in Bruntsfield. First thing – make sure you book, Montpeliers is always packed at the weekend, but they are great at squeezing you in if they can. Recently refurbished, Montpeliers is now a very lovely, bright space with a French cafe feel – lots of light wood, huge windows, wrought iron features and exposed lightbulbs. The crockery is cute and cool at the same time, and the breakfast menu is delicious.
Situated up in Bruntsfield it’s been open since 1992 and has recently undergone a make-over. We were pleased to see that they've still kept their 2 courses for £10 and 2 mains for £10 offers along with the extensive cocktail menu and excellent beer selection. The inside of Montpeliers is spacious, romantic and has a French country vibe to it. When we arrived at 6pm the place was a hive of activity.
As you can see from the pictures the food was small tapa style portions to go with each beer. We were glad it wasn't full sized portions otherwise we would never had made it to the end. Mr Edinburger thoroughly enjoyed the beef slider with blue cheese glaze and I loved the chilli prawns, thankfully they weren’t as spicy as we were expecting. Our favourite beers from the night was an easy one. We both loved the Shandon Stout and it’s now on our to buy list, if we can find it as it’s not the easiest to source. All the food served was delicious and tasted very fresh. It gave a great insight into the food on offer at Montpeliers and it’s on our return list.
We're glad they've kept the same great food since the refurb and we'll be back to try out their cocktail menu very very soon. If you're in the area, we'd definitely recommend stopping in although maybe book a table if it's early evening or for brunch as it can get busy pretty quickly.
Montpeliers has been around for 20 years, for any restaurant to last that long they must be doing something right. You could argue that the secret of success may well be the location, situated as it is in a busy little corner of Edinburgh. However this stretch of Morningside Road and Bruntsfield Place has an abundance of decent eateries (the excellent Papilio for one) so flourishing in this competitive market is even more impressive. I would suggest that it is a combination of good food, great service and excellent value for money that brings in (and back) the punters.
We’ve been writing reviews on Zomato for a while now so when they invited us along to a #zomatomeetup we thought it would be a pretty good way to spend our Thursday evening. The venue of choice was Montpeliers Bar. Situated up in Bruntsfield it’s been open since 1992 and has recently undergone a make-over. We were pleased to see that they’ve still kept their 2 courses for £10 and 2 mains for £10 offers along with the extensive cocktail menu and excellent beer selection. Montpeliers is, in a word, lovely. Lovely interiors, lovely coffee, lovely food… just lovely lovely lovely. It doesn’t surprise me that it is such an institution and that so many people love it. With a solid food and drink offering and a nice cosy setting, there are few nicer places to enjoy a traditional breakfast in Bruntsfield.
I really like montpelliers it is a great place for lunch as well as meeting for drinks. It has a great atmosphere and the staff are really friendly. Plus they do a great mojito!
When i was out in this area i somtimes use to stop by for breakfast. The pankakes were amazing!!!

I have been to Montpeliers a couple of times times and I've always found the place to be really busy and the dinner menu with a starter and main course for £10 is probably the reason for much of Montpeliers popularity. The trendy, yet relaxed décor and efficient and friendly service is exactly what a great value menu needs to propel Montpeliers from average to greatness. The menu begins with a good selection of five star
Montpeliers was always quite a nice place to grab a few drinks or meal (especially with their two-course dinner for £10) although, being part of the same group as Tigerlily, Rick's and a few others, it perhaps had a reputation for drawing a certain crowd. But with a makeover - cosy yet refined - it now feels more open, warming and welcoming. The breakfast / brunch selection is particularly good, and while it probably won't be the most delicious food you've ever had (though the French toast and truffled macaroni cheese is lovely) the full-cooked breakfasts offer value for money. It tends to be pretty busy so service can seem a little slow at times, but it's friendly and you can flick through the weekend supplements while sipping your flat white, or, if you're at the front, people-watch through big, rain-spattered windows.

The menu begins with a good selection of five starters and then Main courses catering to every taste. When we were there there was a choice of chicken, salmon, pork noodles, the classic cheeseburger, a Haloumi risotto and a Main of the Day. If the comprehensive daily menu doesn't take your fancy then why not look at the à la carte, with a choice of ten starters as well as a couple of appealing sharing boards. The cup runneth over for Main Course choice with nearly a dozen more menu options.
On this visit to Montpeliers there was three generations eating as my three year old daughter and fifty- ahem something father were also dining along with accompanying wives. Typically whilst the rest of my family were all able to find something off the daily menu to suit them the little person and I obviously had to be different! We decided to share the mixed platter for a starter and then have the corn-fed Chicken Breast with King Prawns for a main course.
The service was welcoming we were greeted at the door and shown straight-away to our table there was plenty of room for the five of us, with a little person corralled into a bench seat. There was even room for a buggy and all of our coats to be liberally scattered around us despite the fact that the restaurant was full. The staff as usual were very friendly and efficient bringing over menus taking drinks orders and returning to take our food order after once we had made the difficult deliberations detailed above!
The sharing board did not disappoint; the marinated chicken skewers was set upon by my famished daughter. We had been watching the Lion King at the Playhouse and I think perhaps she had been watching some of the Lions and Hyenas a bit too closely! The skewers were succulent, tender and juicy with a marinade that made it's presence known without being overwhelming. The goats cheese crostini was beautifully cooked crusty on top slightly melted inside with a rich flavour. The smoked Haddock and Dill fish-cakes with my personal favourite the flavour of the fish balanced perfectly with the Dill, the inside of the fish-cake had a light fluffy consistency which was contrasted with the crisp breadcrumbs giving the fish a loving hug. The Caesar salad was a welcoming addition and distracted me from the fact that the meat and fish were rapidly disappearing from the board. The wedges and zucchini fries were also outstanding, I have never been a fan of zucchini or courgette as I used to call it, I feel it is now horribly overused and appears on vegetable dishes when it has no right to be, I am old fashioned and prefer Carrots, Cauliflower and Broccoli. However covered in breadcrumbs and deep-fried it is a taste sensation although it could be said that most things taste much better when battered and deep-fried! The Basil Mayo provided a nice contrast in temperature, texture and flavour and was a little more interesting than the usual garlic mayo or Barbecue Sauce.
Service was quick and we didn't wait long between the starter being cleared away and the main courses arrive arriving. The Breast of Chicken was nicely char-grilled with a crisp outside, perhaps a little dry inside but it didn't take away from the flavour that only corn feeding can bring. When I saw it on the menu, the combination of chicken and prawns, I was curious to see how the two would relate but I'm pleased to say that the Basil Cream sauce was successful, bringing together the chicken and the prawns perfectly. The excellent accompaniment to both meat and prawns were the baby potatoes which were beautifully cooked and complimented the meal perfectly.
The child-friendly waiting staff checked on us after every dish was served to make sure everything was okay and kept our glasses topped up throughout the evening. The bill was presented promptly when we asked for it and for four adults having two courses, the food was just over £50. It would have been a mere £40 if I hadn't gone all A La carte, but using the excuse that I was sharing seemed to make it acceptable. Of course the £10 menu is just the dangling carrot to get you in the door, the price of side orders, desserts and then usually drinks is the big stick used to knock cash out of your wallet/purse/pocket. At Montpeliers the stick is not that big, possibly more twig like as all the little extras are quite reasonably priced. There is a good beer selection, with some great Scottish brews from Innis & Gunn and the excellent Harviestoun. Be aware that a decent bottle of wine between two will probably cost more than your food if you stick to the £10 two course options, but that's par for the course.
Ultimately service was good, food was excellent and the value for money was just right. This is a congested part of Edinburgh for restaurants and it says a lot that this one has survived to nearly twenty years and on the evidence of dinner tonight I can not help thinking it'll probably be around in 20 years time.
This establishment is good for having a few drinks, however, whenever I have been for a meal I always leave feeling a little bit hungry! They have a set menu for two courses for £10 and although a good variety of food, what is described never lives up to what is then actually served. The portions are quite small, but Im sure that the chefs will never know who ordered what etc as the same meals are on the main menu as well so I do doubt that you are given less. As per my rating 'good enough' - it is worth a visit as the interior is lovely and it is nice to sit down with some drinks for friends but the food is only ok.
We had breakfast and it was suuper good — the waitress that attended us was very friendly and understanding. The coffee was really good, not too strong but enough to keep me awake in the morning 🤣. Although we ordered something that wasn’t in the menu, they didn’t say anything and in our opinion, executed the idea perfectly. The interior design was so cozy, definitely will be coming back later!
A really lovely venue to go to eat. The atmosphere is lovely and friendly with the staff making you feel at home. The selection of food is as shown on the website, with not as much selection for vegetarians as you would like. With a small selection of specials available. Drinks are as you would normally find in a restaurant.
We enjoyed breakfast so much that we returned for dinner, which was also delightful. Choices were good, service was classy, and the decor was pretty and relaxing. Good selection of wines and craft beers. TIP: Book your table in advance, even for breakfast.
Nice bar with great selection of cocktails! Music volume could be a bit lower but after a few drinks you don't mind! Service was fast! Didn't try food, maybe next time! Recommend 😊
Beautiful little restaurant with a friendly team. The coffees were good but the food was a bit of a let down. We had the skillet which was served in a bowl and the flavours/combination just didn't work in my opinion, sorry. Would definitely be back to try something different next time.
Friendly staff, squeezed using for a dinner table on a busy night, then moved unto a better spot when they got a cancellation!
Food and drink were excellent, and they had a fun pub quiz the night we were there, so we had a great evening.
Well worth a visit if staying nearby.
My partner had just been to a gruelling medical appointment and was a bit shaky. We were greater warmly by the barman and the waitress led us to a quiet table with a nice garden view where we had a wonderful meal. I collected my car before I got booked and picked my partner up from the front door. My fish was fresh and delicious. We both felt a lot better afterwards.
Always a great atmosphere here , managed to get a table for drinks which is rare as it’s very popular.
A couple of glasses of Malbec and a hot chocolate rounded of our evening walk.
Will be back for food soon !
My friends omelette came out not quite as hot as it should have been but this was rectified immediately she mentioned it and the 2nd one was thoroughly enjoyed by her. My pancakes were great and the service was lovely.
Great street presence is matched with a beautiful interior that immerses you into a garden feel. Flat white Coffees were decently tasty. Friendly service as we were greeted and served promptly.
Fantastic place!! Great staff, great atmosphere, gorgeous food and great cocktails. Well worth the visit despite being slightly away from the city centre.
The food is always reliable. Staff attentive and look like they enjoy working! Also, well behaved dogs 🐕 welcome! Great.
GREAT SERVICE, GREAT PRICES AND GOOD FOOD
Had a table booked for 1:30 on a Saturday and it was much needed because it was busy when i got there.
The service here was really good as the waitresses were friendly, quick to take an order, and quick to serve food!
I got The Monty which was decent in size. Everything served was quite good however there were a few things that were not amazing. The scrambled eggs that I got were a little watery which made them lack a little taste. The potato scone was also not that fresh. The good thing about this dish is that you get a juice and coffee/tea included in the price.
I also got the pancakes with caramelized banana and butterscotch. They were pretty nice and had a nice sweetness. They serving was the perfect amount
The best breakfast i’ve ever had. Try The Full Monty breakfast and truffle mac n cheese. Amber was very professional and provided the best service possible. Highly recommended!
