Pocket friendly and great food...
We were in search of an affordable Indian restaurant in Edinburgh while on our vacation. Suggested by zomato we went to this place and were absolutely happy to get some good amount of food at less price.
The place is very basic and the ambience is also very basic. But if you are looking just to fill your stomach with some good food then this is the place to go.
We ordered chicken biryani and chicken curry with naan. The food was very good and filling.
Though the staff was a bit not so concerned about us we were okay with it.
Tried the takeaway on recommendation from a close friend; and I would give it a thumbs up.
Tried chicken seekh kebab for a pound and half each and I was not disappointed at all.
I often eat out Indian food with an apprehension that it would not taste close to an authentic Indian food, and more often than not, the apprehension becomes a reality. Had the same for this place too so limited my self to kebab to start with. But it soon changed with the first bite of it.
The taste was 100% authentic. Spices was just perfect and so the hotness of the Good, which we Indians often complain of Indian food made to western taste. There was no compromise of taste what so ever and I am now keen to go back and try some thing else.
Complete value for money Indian food and I would give a 5/5 to it for my first visit.
ps: unfortunately no pic this time as was busy enjoying the authentic taste of chicken sekh kebab. 😉

Been here many times during my six months in Edinburgh. One of the good places to try the Indian and Pakistani food. Falooda is really good here.
Very cheap and perfect for those times when you wanted a big eat because the portion was huge (if you can't finish it, you can bring the leftover home - perfect for when I was a broke uni student). Foods were good and I love their chicken tikka masala and chicken curry!

Very cheap and shock to see the large portion! I always end up eat half of it and take it away the other half. If you're not really hungry or the type who naturally eat a lot, better to bring your friend along!
The food is soo yummy you feel home away home. This was our ghar ka khana types during our University days in Edinburgh. Very close to city centre. Best is their kabab nun combo. The food is super fresh and will bring u back time and again. For all those Indians in Edinburgh this is such a relief.
If you think a supermarket meal deal is NOT a proper lunch, then this is the place for you. It's close to the University, it's cheap, fast, and they have plenty of options (also vegetarian). I really like the lentils (Tarka Daal) with rice!
It is a very famous restaurant in Edinburgh. Known for its spicy chicken biryaanis and mutton delicacies, it is by far one of the cheapest places to eat. It is located in the old town area and quite accessible.
The dining area is quite large and spacious. They have a separate section for takeaways. Ambience is normal and nothing much to notice. (Doesn't matter much when you are having a scrumptious asian meal at a pocket friendly rate).
The only thing for which I am giving it 4 star rating is that they do not have any combo meal without rice. I wanted to eat Nan with mutton curry but to have that, I had to pay the price of full rice-mutton combo meal and paid for Nan separately. They should keep the combo for both rice and Nan/Chapaati.
Food - 4/5
Ambience - 4/5
Cost - 5/5
Mosque kitchen is an example of a restaurant which has surprised me for the positive. It has a fantastic communal atmosphere with welcoming staff which isn't greedy on the food portions they serve. You can order a plate full of curry and rice and only pay 5 pounds. I personally recommend the Lamb Rogan Josh, it incorporates the deep flavour of lamb with spicy indian seasonings on a rich tomato base- Nothing better in a rainy day!
Ok so for those of who short of time a quick rrview.
So cheap
So authentic
So nice
Situated On Nicolson street
Buffet is well worth it
Good seating spaces
Good for Indian/Asian food lovers
To elaborate it's a very famous place for desi for lovers in old town. Mainly popular due to its low pricing and hassle free eating experience .
They have buffet as well as ala carte . buffet is 10 pounds and you can usually only serve once from the spread.
In ala carte the chicken tikka masala is good, the chicken curry is just awesome.
The lamb rogan Josh and dal tadka is also recommendable .
Mosque Kitchen is a cheap, no-frills type restaurant and serves authentic Indian food. It's cafeteria style, so food is ordered and served from the counter near the back and the tables are communal. I had mushroom curry and chana masala, rice, and garlic naan for £6 - everything was flavourful and delicious, except the naan, which I found to be a bit disappointing.
This was my second visit to Mosque Kitchen and I was just as satisfied as my first visit. Being the first weekend of the Festival we were struggling to get a table anywhere, we decided to try Mosque Kitchen because it is relatively big inside. Luckily we managed to find space at a table, as it was extremely busy.
The service here is really quick, and the food is delicious as well as cheap! What more could you ask for? Between 3 of us we ordered 2 curries, some chickpeas and some spinach potatoes, as well as 2 naan breads. We also got 3 waters. It was £15 altogether and it was extremely filling, we couldn't even eat it all.
The food is delicious. Some items can be quite spicy but it adds to the great flavours. Mosque Kitchen is the perfect place to grab a quick bite after work or before catching a show at the Festival.
Cheap and good. Rice and lentils with lamb curry. Its a quick feed, frill free quick lunch. An ideal place close to Edinburgh University suiting students or backpackers.
The Mosque Kitchen is something of an institution in Edinburgh. Ask anyone who was once a skint student in this magnificent city and they will be able to tell you, at length, about how wonderful the food is here and how reasonably priced it is. Now, I’m sad to say its been quite a few years since I’ve been a student, but I still like to pay this place a visit now and again if I get the hankering for a cheap, but tasty, curry fix.
No Frills Dining. On the corner on Nicolson Square is this spacious curry house. There is plenty of competition in this area so it has to be good to be this busy (I hoped). In the door and the food counter is at the back. It's canteen style so I pick up a plastic fork and plump for the chicken curry. I take my generous plateful and find a seat at one of the long benches. The place is freshly decorated and clean and the food is simple but delicious. Not a place for a 1st date but enjoyable and good value. I'll visit again for sure.
Would be better if you where pissed Curry was a tad watery , an had half a Ginger bulb in my rice
Over the past few years, the Mosque Kitchen has quickly grown in to an Edinburgh staple, coming in to its own during festival time. Its location, neatly placed between the seething hubs of comedy merriment that are the Pleasance and the George Square/Bristo Square nexus plays some part in that. Its well deserved reputation for no-nonsense, reasonably priced, high qualit
This place must be a popular stop for the uni goers in Edinburgh because you can get a big plate of curry served buffet style for under £10 . There are no waiters to pay for , just a cook and server , serving from containers in a glass cabinet so you pick whatever takes your fancy . In my case I opted for lamb curry with spinach potato and rice , which was heaped on a plate and devoured with committed fervour. So many pieces of soft succulent lamb ! Beautiful! It’s clean and basic inside the shop with wooden floors , tables and chairs . It’s a big place with plenty of room if you are disabled or have small children unlike most Indian restaurants. Lastly , I didn’t try the ice cream which is served from a different counter by somebody else but it looked equally delicious and inexpensive. Top quality fast food on the go
Returned to MK after a long time. And it was well worth the visit. Canteen like feel with a set menu and food is ready to be dished out, so no waiting. I had the chilli chicken & rice and it was epic, spiced just right with a delicious sauce. Generous portion too, very filling. I won't be waiting so long for a return visit that's for sure!
Great place to grab tasty lunch. Good variety and quick service.
Amazing place. The food was great and not pricey at all. You get to choose from a variety of vegetarian and vegan options and the staff was very nice. Just be careful with the different sauces and curry’s, it can be really spicy. One sauce was a bit too hot for me but I could have just asked. Would totally recommend this place!
Canteen-style restaurant, very simple, basic environment. Food excellent, limited but adequate choice, chicken and lamb meat dishes, good selection of vegetarian options. Rice included but ask for their excellent chapatis. My favourite pull-in for a quick lunch.
We did order a fair amount for many of us, it was busy time as plenty of people, food was nice but maybe avoid pizza as it was still doughy and top was all done. Will recommend the wraps which is good portion size.
They should get another toilet in there or just a side sink where can wash hands only than waiting in queue. Atmosphere not too bad and they have their own parking but it's paying parking, you might be paying alot if your not in and out quickly being in city centre.
It has a reasonable price and the food was quite ok.. I did had much better but this one was still acceptable. Just the workers didnt really inform us that some dished were too spicy and when we entered we needed to figure out ourselves and ask how the ordering system worked.
We went back and ate 3 times at this place.. for me: No.1 Halal place in Edinburgh
Unpretentious good food at a fair price.
Perhaps a little rough and ready, but none the worse for that, staff are hard working and friendly, the food is excellent, good portions, after being served at the counter you take a seat at one of the long tables, falling into discussion with whoever is sitting close.
Great place especially during the Fringe
This place is GREAT! We loved stopping here. The staff was friendly. It was popular but not crowded.
They had a lot of ready-made curries which reminded me a bit of an upscale cafeteria. The tikka masala was great. Also, get yourself the garlic butter naan. So yummy. Portions of everything are large.
Overall, this place is inexpensive and filling. As a tourist, I appreciate places like this. Worth the walk.
Masha'allah great restaurant and great hospitality. A definite 5 stars - great quality food and very affordable price. And, ask for Karak Chai, you will love it ❤️!
Good portion of foods* served. Good value in terms of price compare to other Asian cuisine around.
2 person's Total cost £23 including Tea.
*Halal foods
Absolutely recommendable for the light and budget travelers. The menu is affordable and the staff are kind. Easy to choose the dishes and the portion is quite big, so very much satisfied. This place reminds me the times in uni.
Would highly recommend this place, on a evening out it was worth going here and get to try their very delicious karahi dishes... would definitely go back again even from so many miles away.
Excellent food, brings the authentic taste of desi food. Perfect for a hearty lunch after walking around touristing the city of Edinburgh. Generous portions, relatively cheap. Very spacious dining area. Food on display behind glass, see exactly what your food looks like! Managed to share a plate with another person and we were both filled up!
CLASSICALLY GREAT TASTING CURRY
Came here on a Wednesday at around 2pm and there were plenty of seats available. It was also new year's Day so was thankful that it was open. About 30 minutes later it got quite busy.
You are able to sit wherever as it setup with communal style seating. There are long tables with plenty of seats around.
At the back of the restaurant is the place to choose and collect your food. It's served canteen style and you're able to see exactly what you're getting.
I got the pilau rice, the chicken curry, the vegetable curry, and the samosas. They are very generous with the portions when dishing out the food.
The best thing about the food for me was that it tastes rich and familiar. Everything tastes exactly like it should and all the dishes work well together which means you could go back and have a completely different combination of dishes.
Lovely comfort food which I will be going back for!
