Dropped in with some friends. They have an excellent range if tap beer. Mostly burgers with a few other bits and pieces. Very tasty. Would recommend.
Went here for dinner on Monday evening, it was pretty quiet but a good atmosphere. The place is quite cool, they have board games and we got drumstick lollipops when we finished our burgers. I ordered a Chilli Burger with sweet potato fries, the burger was really good and really spicy. Would definitely go again, really chilled out place!
Another full Scottish breakfast in Edinburgh!I used to came here for a pint with my friends and I loved the place!Breakfast was really good and the staff nice but I waited 30 minutes for 2 breakfast and the pub was almost empty

Fantastic burgers, atmosphere and staff, this place is so nicely tucked along newington, great for a sunday get together and a few beers! Defo recomend for a relaxed and wanting a night out feel with no hassle!
The Southern, located in Newington, forms part of the FullerThomson chain who also own Holyrood 9a and Red Squirrel. The pub is full of dark surfaces but is warmly lit and has a cosy feel. The place wasn’t very lively but we had arrived relatively early in the evening on a Tuesday.
The Southern’s main offerings are burger based. However, there are other options such as hotdogs, salads and other light bites. There is also a breakfast section and a special section for children. To be honest though, you would be a fool not to pick one of their burgers. I went for the Southern burger with the brioche bun and non-seasoned fries. The Southern burger is a 6oz beef burger with red onion, rocket, Hereford Hop cheese, beer mustard mayo and caramelised onion mayo. There were skewers in all of the burgers with a massive bit of pickled cucumber on top. The cucumber seemed a bit weird as it wasn’t even a gherkin and was way too massive for decoration. I also hate cucumber, so that probably didn’t help. The fries came in a cup, which works well for me as I like to slather mine in vinegar. They were great fries, crispy and fluffy, just how I like them. My burger oozed with the rather delicious mustard mayo. The salad was generally quite nice but the tomato had a bit of that fuzzy texture rather than being firm and fresh, but that can often be the case with large beef tomatoes. The beef burger itself was firm, juicy and packed full of flavour. The whole thing was a slightly messy affair in the process of eating but it was worth it.
If you like a good burger, I can recommend the Southern as a satisfying fix.
Southern Comfort. This traditional pub really hits the spot in so many ways. The interior is perfectly judged with period detailing and modern touches. The menu is well balanced to suit most tastes and budgets. I opted for a breakfast and was impressed with the quality of the ingredients and the way they were cooked. The use of a proper grill makes all the difference. The only issue I had was the level of lighting at the bar. It was very dark indeed and ruined the ambience in that area. In all, a great venue and I look forward trying their steaks on my next visit.
Really good food, drinks, and service. We were walking to Prestonfield for tea and to see highland cattle from downtown Edinburgh and got hungry on the walk. Stopped into The Southern Bar for some food and a couple of pints. I enjoyed the Southern Burger and my partner enjoyed the lentil soup.
So this is a place with quite a lot of history, where Nirvana once played a secret show for about 50 people. So we had to stop by for drinks, and they were actually cheaper than in most places in this area. Good atmosphere too.
The food is amazing,
The staff are very polite and very nice and helpful, the pub is walking distance from town but not too busy a pub and has a nice feeling about it .
Pretty good place just around the corner. Definitely more of a burger place than a salad place but we tried it! Nice vibe, friendly staff, and everything was reasonably priced, very happy with the dinner overall :)
Cozy atmosphere, good service, nice selection of beer on tap. Chicken wings are good enough but could have more sauce options other than BBQ.
Excellent locally made pint.
Friendly staff.
Scotsman burger delicious.
Looking forward to going back.
Popped in for dinner before a show. The staff were excellent, very attentive. Served very quickly and the food was very nice. Great start to a fab night
We happened upon this establishment after our first option to eat was fully reserved---we are glad we did! The waitress was nice and attentive. The food was well made, tasty and timely. We ordered starters and vegetarian and fish main courses. Moreover, the drink selection will make any alcoholic skip their AA class;)
Went during a busy time when they didn't seem to have many staff on and had quite a few large bookings. Food was really nice, although took a little while to come (big bookings), and there's a varied cocktail menu. Staff were overrun but we're friendly and nice, just obviously needed a few more of them to service such a large place!
Popped in here for brunch after a big day walking, visiting home (Edinburgh) from Australia and this is my first Scottish/English breakfast since being back, was really good, everything cooked to perfection! ☺️

This feels like a fusion of Scottish and Irish pubs. Loved the style and the beer/food is really good.
Especially fish and chips.
Very good vibe, small with tasty pub food, quite upmarket but still at a good price. It also has an excellent selection of beers with regular guest beers!
Always great to have a pint at the southern bar. Also was really happy and thrilled to have campervan brewery pint 👍 highly recommend a visit and to try the Leith campervan juice 👍
Great place, good choice of beers and tasty food.
Great pub which has been in South Clerk Street for many years. A good selection of beers and still about a fiver a pint, good down to earth atmosphere and friendly staff. Oh and Nirvana played there many years ago.
