Great menu and wonderfully friendly staff
Since re-opening under new management in 2019 the new menu, charcuterie in the evenings and wonderful staff have made Salt Cafe and incredible venue. Extremely friendly, welcoming staff with amazing talented chef. 100% recommend for any occasion, a great addition to the area!!
I came here with my friends a few days ago! Wasn't too bad actually! From the outside it looks quite small but once i was inside there are big tables and also a wee bar which allows for plenty of peeps to fit in.
Salt cafe is always busy whenever i go past it and this time was the same as well. We first sat at the bar and once a table was free we moved over. The nice waitress brought over our menus.
The food itself looked tasty but i ordered a hot chocolate. I feel the food was expensive but my friends seemed to enjoy their meal. I did like their decoration and the atmosphere of the cafe. It was busy but also relaxing as well.
Amazing staff, fantastic bloody Mary's and delicious food! Went here for brunch the other day and everything was amazing. Would definitely go again and try there dinner menu! 5⭐️
Decent enough food, reasonable friendly service, but does not justify prices. Wine £5 too dear, main courses £3-4 over price. Not a restaurant, it's a cafe/bar. Twiddly veg does make it worth more. Resticted menu choice should make it easy to focus costs: not on my visit. Staff are obviously out of depth; you need personality. Lots of good choices in Bruntsfield/morningside that offer better. Up it's own ars*?
Salt is a lovely little spot for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I was surprised at how reasonably priced the dishes are (most mains are less than £10), especially since the menu focuses on local and seasonal food.
I tried Moules Frites - a generous portion of steamed mussels with white wine and parsley, and perfectly crispy, salted fries on the side. It was a great lunch, and a bargain for only £8.75!
Stopped in for brunch on a Thursday early noon after a quick scout on TripAdvisor for places to eat on Morningside Road. A bustling cafe with stripped back wooden tables contrasting against rather elaborate metal light fittings and a mismatch of metal or simple cotton fabric covered chairs, we were luckily shown to the last available table in the back room. The cafe appears small from the outside but is actually deceptively big. Music was easygoing chill out which added to the relaxed atmosphere. Smiling waitresses helped also. We ordered coffees and 2 eggs royale and our waitress promptly brought a jug of water over. Coffees came soon after and we were pleased that they were good, strong, standard coffees. We waited quite a while for our food but we didn't really mind as we were not in a rush and they were busy! And it was worth the wait.
Perfectly toasted artisan bread instead of muffins was a great twist and the portion of beautiful silky smokey smoked salmon and Peppery rocket was generous to say the least. The best part, however, was the gorgeous truffle hollandaise- my only complaint was that I wanted more.
Promptly finishing our food, we had to wait quite a while before we were able to get someone's attention to get the bill and then again quite an excessive time to pay. The waitresses were very friendly and accomodating and the cafe was busy but even though we were in no rush, the speed of service really let the place down. On the standard of the food, we will return... but with hope that timings have improved.
First came here for dinner and had a decent burger then a really nice dessert - a take on 'tea and 'biscuits' which took the form of a rooibos panna cotta in a teacup with shortbread. Had breakfast here too and had the lovely eggs benedict. Managed to restrain myself from having an "anti-fogmatic," opting for a very nice latte instead. A cosy place any time of day.
One of the things we really wanted to accomplish in our visit to Edinburgh is to enjoy the perfect Scottish scone. There may be several places to do that here, but this place is certainly one of them. The scones were warm, crisp on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside, and perfectly cooked. We enjoyed our scones with Earl Grey tea and hot spiced cider. It was the perfect pairing.
Easy peasy decision - 5 STARS!! We went here for breakfast for my wife’s birthday. I had heard good things about this cafe and it certainly didn’t disappoint. We got 2x Butcher’s Breakfasts but before that we got a 2 x luxury hot chocolates, a Pain Au Chocolat and a buttermilk scone with clotted cream and house-made jam. The drinks were outstanding. I am not a massive fan of marshmallows but even this was great. The drink had the perfect amount of sweetness. We loved it! The Pain Au Chocolat was crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. It was cool seeing all the layers. My scone was incredible. It was of an unusual shape but that gave it character. It tasted even more phenomenal with the delicate clotted cream and delicious jam. Now the main event. The butchers breakfast. The crispy sourdough bread came with garlic butter which was bright green and very indulgent. The mushrooms and onions were silky but nice. The sausages were slim but flavourful. The bacon was perfect. I loved the sirracha baked beans. The eggs were spot on, and the black pudding and haggis was as you’d expect. What a lovely breakfast it was. The staff were very welcoming and on the ball. Since it was my wife’s birthday they hilariously put a candle on a sausage which was awesome. The staff are either really good actors or they genuinely care for their customers and love their job. I also love knowing that all the food is freshly made in-house using the very best seasonal, sustainable and local produce. This explains the higher price for the breakfast. Although some might find £16 for a cooked breakfast a bit steep. My only nitpicking is that I wasn’t a huge fan of our seating. It was a little tight and the backrests are wobbly so if someone sitting behind you moves so do you. This is undoubtedly up there for my best breakfast spots in Edinburgh. In my top 2 for sure.
We loved salt cafe! The food was great. We especially loved the hot chocolate. Definitely recommend stopping here for breakfast or brunch. It is dog friendly too. Also, be sure to make a reservation! They were nice enough to squeeze us in day of though. I’d love to come back here!
Like its pun-packed menu and pancake-stacked plates, Salt is full of character and taste. Aside from a banging brunch, highlights included chic decor and stellar staff. My only regret is not asking whether they'd consider serving a boozy version of the Dirty Chai Latte. Next time.
The food was tasty and the presentation was well done. The staff were attentive and friendly. The restaurant was well decorated and clean and I liked the wooden design of the tables. Also in a lovely part of town. Only negative would be the tables were very close to each other so could hear other customers conversations quite vividly.
Update: still awesome!! We LOVE the gluten free full breakfast!
Great food, great staff, REALLY good coffee!
Gluten free options available including scones! Although mine was given to me half frozen -however staff were really lovely and apologetic about it.
Very happy and can't wait to try other things
Absolutely amazing experience. Me and two of my friends went there on our last day in Edinburgh.
The menu is not huge (wich is a good thing) but you still have such a hard time deciding what to get because every dish sounds like it's going to be awesome.
The food itself left us completely in awe so we stayed longer and ordered another round just to get to experience more of it. Calories? Who cares :P
Last but not least it should be mentioned that the staff and especially the owners are lovely people with a real passion.
With love from Germany
Search no more, this is THE best brunch in Edinburgh. From friendly staff, clean restaurant and delicious Scottish staples, had some of the best coffee I’ve ever had here and you could taste the freshness in
everything you ate. I recommend the butcher’s breakfast, especially if you’re a tourist and want to get a good taste of what good Scottish food is.
Went here for a birthday brunch and had a nice time.
Most of the food was warm and the staff were nice and friendly.
The fennel butter is only for people who love fennel, it was just too much for me!
This place is literally one of the highlights of my Edinburgh trip! As a Turk, when it comes to breakfast my standards are very high but Salt Café definitely is up to it! The owners are amazing, the place is extremely clean, incredible food, friendly staff! Can’t recommend this place enough! 🤍 PS:Amazing Turkish eggs, definitely approved
