The two of us ordered half kilo of lime and chilli mussel and half blue cheese mussel - both were so delicious! The texture was very tender and tasted very fresh. The prawn fried noodles was not bad, a good choice if you want a main to balance with the mussels. The seafood chowder was pretty average. But overall a very fulfilling seafood meal!
I revisited after 19 years and it was the same pleasing quality seafood. My favourite is the bowl of mussels. Selection of Scottish style dishes with a mix of international choices.
It's a five; well deserved
Two couples, we wandered along Rose Street and found Mussel Inn; we're very glad we did. We were sat down with menus in what felt like seconds; drinks then food arrived in quick order, as only it should at a lunchtime.
The décor lends a friendly seafood type feel to the place; the chowder was plain knockout, the salad was nicely dressed, and the wine was most agreeable. The staff were attentive, the amenities clean, the bill didn't hurt. Your reviewer found he had made it through to final interview for a job application, so Mussel Inn will forever hold fond memories.
I love seafood and Mussel Inn delivers with some quality seafood dishes - the pots of mussels with the 5 different sauces are delicious, and it is almost impossible not to order more of their crusty bread to dip into the sauce once all the mussels are gone! I normally get the seafood pasta as a main and there is a good variety of shellfish on offer. If you are with others and more than two people order the shellfish pasta one plate may get more shellfish than the other.
We have visited the Mussel Inn numerous times and have never been disappointed. Inside the restaurant you are always given a warm greeting upon approaching the bar, and the restaurant has a very rustic atmosphere and offers a warm and cosy dining experience.
We were fortunate enough to be able to sit outside (given the Scottish summer weather!), and enjoyed the lunchtime specials, which include mussels, chips or salad, endless bread and a drink for £7.95 each, which is great value given the quality of the mussels and the location.
The mussels are always well prepared and come in a variety of sauces. There is also alternative dining options (except for mussels), although I have to say, why go to the Mussel Inn if you are not going to eat mussels.
I have eaten mussels all over the world and you simply cannot compare the quality to the mussels you get here!
Not to be missed if you are in Edinburgh and enjoy your seafood!
My friend and I were visiting Edinburgh and it was our first night here when we decided to try Mussel Inn upon the recommendation of our host.
The place was packed both indoor and outdoor so the staff politely informed us to wait till there's a free table. It only took about 10 minutes when we were called in for indoor seating. We didn't mind as it was a bit chilly outside. The place is casual with lively ambience and light hues interior.
We started with haggis bonbon which one friend thought I wouldn't like. But I actually found it to be well-seasoned and cooked. The crispy coat of the balls match the soft inside of them.
We added mussel platter as starter and then for our main I had a spiced fish stew and grilled sea bass for my friend. All were good and well flavoured.
Ah, seafood – Scotland’s secret shame. Our waters are home to such wonderful produce. Why don’t we eat it? Exporting it just seems like such a waste. Rose Street may be famed for pub crawls, but it also acts as a convenient hotspot to showcase our natural larder to our many foreign visitors, especially during Festival time, so I dearly hoped The Mussel Inn would provide suitable evidence to suggest visitors would leave with a positive impression of our fishy treats.
Even though they were turning larger groups away if they didn't have a booking, the host managed to squeeze me in near the bar and I have to say, I was very happy with both my table and the food. Even though they were clearly run off their feet, the staff were friendly and efficient and my chilli, ginger and lemongrass mussels were the best I've eaten in a long time. In fact it was arguably the best meal I ate during my short stay in Edinburgh. There's a reason why this restaurant is do busy. It's because the food is superb!
Arrived on a busy Friday night without a booking but were still accommodated immediately. waiting staff were very good, courteous and attentive. Food was delivered quickly and tasted delicious. an excellent meal and great experience. will definitely be returning.
Great mussels. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Edinburgh, I always visit this place once a month. Usually have quickie lunch which is cheap and delicious. The dish that you should definitely have is seafood chowder soup and blue cheese mussels....mmmmm yummy!!
Fresh, Fresh, Fresh!. Amazing fish, nice small restaurant in Rose Street. Informal and the best quality fish in town. Beats Fishers!
Awesome loud fun atmosphere great smells, magic place with friends, brilliant food.....mussels what else.....and scallops... And lots of wine what a great evening with people who enjoyed sampling each others food. An evening to remember.
I was there a year ago in December. The place very near with Primark my fav place to shop :).
I was really enjoy eating there. The mussel was so fresh, the salmon was so tasty and love the ambience. I would definitely go there again when visiting Edinburgh
Loved the ambiance and the service! And also loved that it's so central and we could walk there. They took our reservation promptly and all was ready when we got there. We were quickly served beverages and delicious bread.
I ordered the crab pasta and because there was so much chilli I couldn't taste much else and it was so hot, I couldn't really eat the meal. However, they were very nice and they changed my meal without any problem. I then ordered the shellfish pasta and it was absolutely delicious! I could eat that everyday! Sadly, my companion had ordered the special fish dish of the day and while he liked the plate, he found that the fish was a bit bland. But sometimes it's all a matter of personal taste, so some people might have loved it!
Lastly, I was a tad disappointed when I was told I couldn't bring my food home. While I can understand the health and safety reasons for that, when I hear that restaurants don't allow you to bring food (for which you've paid) home, all I can think about is that it's probably all going in the bin. Thankfully, my companion eats a lot and helped me finish my plate.
Some bumps in the road, but delicious nonetheless and probably next time we go we'll focus on mussels and oysters.
I was reminded of how much I enjoy oysters when I tasted some lovely plump ones from AnCuig Seafoods at the Scottish Food show last week. So when it was suggested that we go to Mussel Inn for dinner Friday night I knew immediately what my starter would be. The Mussel Inn isn’t one of the places that AnCuig supplies, and I’m not going to discuss the relative values of oysters, but I will wax lyrical over a meal of molluscs. Ah, a beautiful thing, the mollusc, when fresh, sea-scented and accompanied by a clean white wine.
The Mussel Inn is a mid-sized and from the outside a somewhat unassuming restaurant tucked away on Rose Street, not all that far from Seadogs. It suggests sea food from the get-go: there are huge mosaic fish on the walls and there’s a fairly fishy ambiance. The menu is straightforward and fish-focussed. Mussels is an unsurprising speciality and comes in half kilo or kilo pots in several different sauces.
Since my mind was set on starting my meal with a half-dozen oysters, I thought it only logical to make my main a half-kilo of mussels in a shallot sauce. Service is snappy so there was not long between order and starter.
The oysters made me very happy. They had that perfect sea flavour that needs no fiddling, although I find it difficult not to squeeze a little bit of lemon on, just because I like lemons so much. These would have been perfect on their own, dressed in nothing but their delectable liquor.
I enjoy the way Mussel Inn serves mussels. They come in a large pot, with the sauce written on the lid. The lid is where the shells go as you empty the pot. The shallot mussels come in a white wine, shallot and cream sauce. I was tempted by the natural mussels who come in nothing but their own juices, but the shallot won me over. It had a light flavour that complemented the mussels well. Not overpowering, and light despite the cream. I ate it all greedily.
My companion had the vegetarian pasta. It came with mushrooms and a few leaves of spinach. Really, not something worth talking about. Not like the mussels. So let’s get back to them.
Mussels are finger food: I eat mine using a small shell to pick the meat out of larger shells. I use larger shells to spoon up the sauce even when spoons are supplied. I stack the empty shells inside each other to save time (and because it looks pleasing). I enjoy hands-on food and I enjoy being hands-on with it. The lemon wipe at the end of the meal is very welcome.
To finish, I had affogato. Exquisitely simple and a delightful mixture of adult and childish pleasures, affogato is vanilla ice cream onto which you pour espresso and liqueur. I chose amaretto to make the perfect indulgent and silly desert to round off a perfect meal.
The bill came to £60 which really impressed me considering that we had two 3-course meals and a £20 bottle of viognier. Service was friendly and prompt. Mussel Inn gets busy on a Friday and is quite buzzy too. Tables at The Mussel Inn are close together so you can listen in to your neighbour’s conversation if you have none yourself.
It is a really good place for mussels. Straight up.
It is small quite place for Mussel lovers. The place is simple and cozy. The service and staff is friendly from the selection of menu till the payment.
They have combinations of meal which makes it interesting to try variety of dishes. You should definitely try them cooked in different styles, only then you can decide your own liking. If you are trying for the first time; Don’t worry! They don’t smell
.
The photo describes the best i had here. They were perfectly cooked, right temperature and off course had all essential flavors.
Mussel pots are not be ordered if you are planning a quick lunch.
We had a nice dining experience at this restaurant, opting to sit outside due to the limited availability indoors. The mussels were so good, bursting with flavor. Considering the reasonable price, the overall meal was a great deal, and we enjoyed the added bonus of a pleasant view while enjoying our delicious dishes.
Wait persons were very friendly and attentive. The food was delicious with generous servings. We enjoyed sitting on the outside patio. I enjoyed the King Scallops dish. There was a wide variety of choices on the drink menu. I would highly recommend.
Fantastic seafood at this Rose Street restaurant. Come here for some kicking Moroccan mussels. The sea bass was good too. We also had a sav blanc bottle too. Sticky date pudding was good too! Scallops were good too.
We arrived a little after they opened with no reservation and they sat us right away. We had the Moroccan muscles and the licor or sauce was decadent lightly cheesy and good spices. I loved it so much we didn’t let them take the out so we could lop the juice up w bread. My scallops were succulent and the whole salad was delicious 🤤. I would love to come back. Our server was very new and I appreciated the patience she had w me and my questions. And if she didn’t know the answer she didn’t hesitate to find out for me.
100% satisfied with the blue cheese mussels pot! Super large portion, I can’t stop dipping the bread to the sauce, the mussels are fresh and soooo delicious.
Absolutely mouth watering, will visit again.
The staff is also very friendly and helpful.

Amazing food. Recommend it so much - especially the tomato&basil soup, it was amazing. A bit expensive though but you get what you pay for.
The staff is kind and the food is great. Most of all, I couldn't feel any racist behavior in them. The seats can be filled quickly, so reservations are required. If I have a chance, I would like to visit again.
Amazing food. Highly recommend the chilled oyster and cream mussels.
The staff are nice and helpful.
Truly enjoyed the fresh naturally steam mussels. Just add a little fresh lemon juice and enjoy. The lobster over potatoes with a tomato and green salad was delicious. We selected an Italian Pinot Grigio to complement our seafood dinner. Finished with an expression macchiato and for me an Expresso martini. Great food, drinks and service. We could not ask for more!
Really fresh and large portion of tasty seafood. We opted for the chowder and seafood platter and it goes really well with garlic bread. Highly recommended. Only minor complaint will be that the chowder was more potato-ey and less seafood-y.
Worth ! Must try King Scallops with Mixed veggie was really good. And I don't usually eat veggies !
The place is really nice and the pasta is excellent! I was recommended this place by a student in UoE on the train to edinburgh. I can taste the freshness of seafood and the pasta is well done! But the grill oyster is a bit too salty for me so I drank lots of water. the atmosphere is great. this restaurant is well decorated and clean. I would consider give it another try if I go to Edinburgh again.
We had a very tasty dinner, the seafood was really good and the chowder amazing. Kindest service ever!
Great place for seafood, the soup was the best. Great service but the table were to close to each other. I was so close to the next table, the kids in the next table keep looking over my shoulders to see what i am doing on my phone! No privacy at all . some kids just have not learn their manners yet.
The mussels are the favourites, we ordered the ones cooked with white wine.
There is a big plate with a variety of sea food but the mussels are better.
Return vist during busy festival time. Food was excellent as usual. Fish fresh and perfectly cooked. Staff knowledgeable about menu and attentive. Highly recommend food and staff. Only issue to be aware of is that some of the cobblestones across Edinburgh are in need of repair. Could be a balance or trip isdue.
This place has been recommended to me several times, and I'm so pleased to say that I'm also joining that bandwagon 🥰
As a lover of seafood, I'm surprised I haven't tried this place before now, but I'm glad that's now changed.
💛 Like most places in Edinburgh, incredibly welcoming and friendly staff that were very warm and added to the ambiance of the restaurant
🇲🇦 The Moroccan spice mussel pot was spectacular, highly recommend, and not that spicy for those who don't want much of a kick! Paired excellently with the side of crusty bread 🔥
🦐 Although slightly pricier, the tiger prawns starter was worth every penny, lovely starter to share before the excellent the mussel pot main.
If you're looking a cute and cosy place for a date, I recommend here 100%, just remember you're using your hands a lot so be sure to wash them before holding your significant other's! And don't forget to book ahead of time (via their website) so you're not disappointed 💯
The food here was just absolutely gorgeous - I couldn't recommend this place enough if you appreciate seafood. Had the seafood chowder and mussels with shallots, white wine and garlic with a delish sauvignon blanc. This has been one of the best meals I've had in a long time. A true testament to incredible Scottish seafood 👏 plus I ate all by myself and didn't feel like a loner, so that added to it too. Also the BREAD. Proper fresh delicious incredible bread.
