Best burger in the Burg
Having lived in Edinburgh for 20+ years (and having eaten out a LOT in this city) my favourite burger is at Bell’s Diner.
It’s situated on quaint St Stephen St in Stockbridge, which is worth a trip away from the town centre in itself.
The restaurant it is a simple little room with not many frills, apart from the extensive condiment tray.
The food is amazing, the burgers come in three sizes, and have a selection of butters and cheeses. I ya e never tried the milkshakes and all the extras because the
I can’t recommend this place highly enough, it’s authentic, tasty and original (and I also really like the music)
Best burgers in Edinburgh (and I've tried a few!). Rocquefort butter 6oz. Fantastic. The relish tray is something else as well. Many to choose from but I'd recommend finding room on your plate for all of them. Drinks nice and well priced as well. Definite must try.
This place has been here for decades so it must be doing someting right. Not a brioche bun in site which is a refreshing change to all the new burger joints around. Classic burgers washed down with classic desserts. Super busy at weekends so book ahead. Enjoy.
Best burger in Edinburgh. Simply the best. After extensive research, eight burger joints recommended as the best on the web, this is without a shadow of a doubt the best. It's been there forever and there's a good reason. Their burgers are absolutely delicious. For those not familiar with the place I highly recommend that you add one of their butter toppings like the garlic one which transform the burgers which are mouth watering. To avoid dissapointment it is highly recommended to book. The restaurant is small and sparsely decorated and you may find yourself sitting next to complete strangers, but I think that adds to the charm. Only negative is the chips which are like fried oven chip but hey the burgers more than make up for it. Best kept secret in Edinburgh. Highly recomend.
Great burgers. Cheap n cheerful. Good food at good prices. This is a real Edinburgh institution.
Stockbridge Institution. Bell's Diner is as good today as it was 20 years ago. Great burgers, good service, cosy atmosphere.
A wee gem of a place!. This place is Stockbridge's special wee secret. i went here for a xmas night out and was particularly surprised and chuffed with it.
Down sides. - a bit cramped, but cosy.
They could do with another waitress/waiter as the service was a bit slow
I'm not sure when the proper opening times are. as i'm dying to go back - but it seems shut every time i drive past.
anyway all of that gets forgotten as the food was fab. burgers as others say are just sublime! Defiantly give this place a try.
Top Burgers. This is one of the places I miss from my days in Edinburgh. The burgers are ace but leave space for pancake pudding.
Does what it says on the box.... This small unassuming diner in Stockbridge serves some of the best burgers in Edinburgh (in my humble opinion) Due to the small size this place packs out early and therefore I recommed making a reservation to avoid dissapointment. The menu from memory is small, but hey, why complicate things? Do not go here if you don't like burgers! Do go here if you want to sample some of the city's best burgers at extremely reasonable prices!
Great meal... Quick, lovely food, great service!
Best Burgers In Town. Bell's Diner offers traditional, wholesome burgers and steaks at reasonable prices. The excellent burgers are served with a choice of toppings and relishes and can be cooked to your particular requirements. Bell's is, however, not a place for vegans and the vegetarian options are limited but Bell's nut burger is one of the best I have ever tasted.
It's a good idea to book a day in advance as Bell's is quite a small restaurant which seats about 40. Very busy on a Friday and Saturday night. It's only open during the day on Saturday for lunch but this is an excellent time to visit before the shops! The staff are extremely friendly too.
I had a 6oz Roquefort burger with 'slimmer salad' and chips and potato salad as a side dish and a fantastic Banana milkshake for about twelve quid. For pudding (if you have room) I highly recommend the 'Chocolate Cherry Wednesday' or one of the delicious pancakes (the hot fudge sundae pancake is gigantic). Fantastic!
Open 6-10 Sunday to Friday. Saturday (all day) 12 - 10
licensed.
there is no where else I would travel to, to get a burger in Edinburgh
Bells Diner is said to be one of the longest-established restaurants in Edinburgh and it's easy to see why.

This wee restaurant consists of a red-walled front room with a spattering of random photography and some sticky wooden tables: not exactly what "diner" usually calls to mind. The menu is burger-heavy, with various butters, cheeses, and sizes making up one's key decision points.
For the vegetarians, there's a burger, too. It's lentil-y and nutty and tastes pretty good, but doesn't hold together particularly well. The accompanying chips are average, but greatly accentuated by the fun tray of relishes and spreads that one can apply to them.
There are a good number of wines by the bottle (and a few by the glass), as well as an uninteresting assortment of bottled lagers on the drink menu.
The hot fudge sticky toffee pudding wrapped up the meal nicely.
Service was friendly and helpful.
Don't be fooled by the outside of this restaurant looking a bit small and pokey..
Delicious steak, great selection of condiments and the milkshakes are divine!! The burgers around the table looked delicious as well and garnished great reviews from the entire group!
Not many tables tho, so would be best to book!

I didn't realise that Marshall's burger quest in 'How I Met Your Mother' was so legendary until my friend confided that the reason we were dining at Bell's Diner in Stockbridge was that he too had performed this quest in Edinburgh, and that it had led him to Bell's blue door. The establishment has become something of it's own legend in the Edinburgh community, drawing people from far and wide to it's humble steps to sample Edinburgh's 'best burger'.
I must preface this with the information that said friend has been talking my ear off about Bell's for months, so expectations were high. They were well met. The lady that runs front of house was friendly and managed to host a packed restaurant with finesse and charm - clearly something she is used to given that we had to make a reservation.
We both went for the Roquefort Burger - I the medium size, he the large. We didn't have long to wait, and when the burgers arrived they looked very impressive indeed. It was also great to have a tray of relishes and sauces to choose from to customise your own burger. Though mayonnaise was absent (I didn't ask - they probably do have some), the pickles were really yummy and they are always my favourite part of a burger so it was great to be able to put heaps on.
The burger itself was delicious. The meat was well seasoned and cooked and it had the perfect amount of salad and cheese on it. The roquefort was particularly delicious, and melted lusciously into the burger bun. The bun and chips however were a bit of a let down - the chips were nondescript and the bun wasn't toasted and was just a run-of-the-mill type bun, unlike the burger I had last week at Spíler Shanghai in Budapest (I'm still dreaming about that burger). That being said, it was pretty tasty. The atmosphere was buzzing and I can see why it's stood the test of time: it's got good grub, great staff, and it's unpretentious.
This cozy little bistro is OUTSTANDING! We didn't have a booking, but were given a table for an hour before the dinner rush. The service was excellent, and the food was beautifully prepared and presented. Each menu item had unique, individual twists, and there was truly something for everyone. Some of the burger additions were things I never would have thought of, like garlic butter, which made a delicious burger even better. My only regret is that I couldn't finish the last few bites of my burger, because I was stuffed to the gills. I would give this place ten stars if I could!
Bell's is an essential local regular haven.
You feel comfortable ordering all of the frills as the prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and the restaurant is dog friendly.
The garlic bread is the best I've ever had, basil salad dressing is so good 🤤. Go for the 4oz burger patty if you're going to order starters, unless you're like me, 8oz challenge all the way. Ask for medium rare for your patty and get a sauce to accompany the burger.
The hot fudge sundae pancake is to die for (sneaky secret ice cream inside). Do it.
Wow what a find in Stockbridge!!
I cannot believe I’ve missed this little delight which was right opposite my local pub 😂
It came recommended to me by the local pub as it was pretty full for dinner last night for St. Patrick’s Day!
I was not disappointed at all!!
A small but cosy burger diner/cafe.. I came at around 2030hrs and it was completely full but the lovely friendly lady dealing with cafe said to come back in 10mins as she’d have a table.
As promised she had a table ready for me so immediately ordered an 8oz burger with roquefort cheese and bacon (with side of fries). The waitress came out with a tray of sauces for me to choose to add to my burger which was really fun as there were all sorts, all homemade.
The burger was cooked perfectly with so much flavour and the combo of Roquefort and bacon was perfect due to the saltiness.
I cannot recommend this place more and I will 100% be going back (which is probably a bad thing now I know where a decent burger joint is here in Edinburgh/Stockbridge 😂🫣).
Five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Our thanks to the friendly hostess who took us in without a reservation. She served us within the time frame she gave us, and the hamburgers were very good. I highly recommend.
What's great about this place is that the burgers are home made and made with love. You can taste the difference.
On the one hand it's quite ordinary -- the decor hasn't changed in 30 years and there's no attempt to make the burgers look fancy -- but the atmosphere and music are good and so is the food. Their sauce-tray is a wonderful thing and so (apparently) are the puddings.
I came here about 30 years ago with my siblings. I still get that sense of a "special treat" when I go back now. Nothing impresses a kid more than hamburgers.
What blew us away back then was the "2bratburger" on the menu -- the one for the kids. We thought this was a scream and immediately christened our youngest brother "bratburger"
I was delighted to see, when I visited recently, that they haven't done it up. But it's clean and they have some great shots of Bali on the wall.
I love this place.
Friend of mine had family who work there, been a couple of times now. They don’t mess about with portions, very generous. Place has been going years, and it makes sense why they are still around. Can’t wait to go back.
We’ve been to Bell’s Diner for many years and it’s been going since before I was born!
The burgers are awesome and the options to personalise your burgers are endless! Don’t forget to choose as many sauces as you want!
Don’t go over board on the size of burger though as you’ll be wanting pudding!!
My family’s been going here for over 25 years! Tastiest burger in town in the cosiest spot. Best burger I’ve ever had! Nothing but good options on the menu. Just amazing burgers, steaks and salads. The communal tray offering an array of sauces, mustard and chutneys is out of this world! A must try restaurant if you ever in Edinburgh. Small restaurant so you probably want to book a table. Three size options for burgers and kids’ menu are available.
We ordered a 4oz beef burger & a 6oz beef burger with applewood smoked cheese. Both were served with salad & fries and you could also help yourself to a large selection of relishes. The food was fresh, well cooked & tasty.
They stock Innis & Gunn beers which were also excellent.
The restaurant was quite busy but the service was relaxed & friendly.
We did not have dessert because pancakes or ice cream was quite a limited choice.
We would recommend Bells Diner and will visit again! 😁
Lovely burger place. I had a delicious chicken burger and my girlfriend had a vegan spicy bean burger. They were very accommodating about her veganism. Recommended.
Nice little qwerty place. Service was amazing food was even better. Can't fault any off it.
Will be going back again !!
Really good burger! They give you a choice of sauces and relishes to choose from (there are a lot! & they are good!). We had a very sweet and helpful waitress the first time. We went back the next day, before closing time, and a gent told us we couldn't come in because they were too busy. What?? Not sure what that was about.
Fantastic wee place with a great cosy atmosphere. The waitress did an amazing job serving a full restaurant all by herself! Plus the food was delicious and great value for money. Would heartily recommend.
Brilliant burgers 🍔 😋 delicious dips, friendly staff. Family run restaurant since 1972 that caters for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans. I had the nut burger, my wife had the normal meat burger and my daughter had the spicy bean burger and they were all fantastic. Portions were very generous, I would highly recommend this establishment 👍😊🍻
Very thankful to have this diner local to us, simple decor but they let the food do the talking
Great food, small and lovely place. A bit noisy due to its size.
Excellent burgers. My number one favourite in Edinburgh.
