Lovely lunchtime venue
Came here for a special meal, and despite the other half thinking things were overdone on the presentation, I thought it was first class. The complimentary bread and butter while waiting for the mains was so good, I couldn’t resist the extra offered! Both mains were excellent as was the shared dessert. The service too was top rate with all staff we met being knowledgeable and friendly. The coffee was a little strong for me but it certainly didn’t detract from the overall enjoyment of the meal.
Right at the end of Stockbridge high street you’ll find the Scran & Scallie, a Bib Gourmand awarded gastropub. It came highly recommended by Patrick’s friend who studied up in Edinburgh, and a recommendation always counts for a lot. Spoiler: it doesn’t disappoint!. As we scanned the menu we got bread in a little muslin cloth bag and creamy butter.
Came across this restaurant by chance. And was super excited when I found out it was a gastro pub. Tried to book but they were full. However, was informed that they do keep a few tables aside for drop in customers. Bonus! And so here we are on a Sat evening. Ordered the chicken parfait to begin with. Delicious! Then a fish main, Roast Coley with artichoke and it was cooked to perfection. Side dish was Savoy cabbage with bacon - reminded me of Christmas and it was perfectly seasoned. Btw the cocktails are divine. And the service is second to none! Definitely a cut above the rest.
I visited here not long after it opened, way before the inception of my blog. I had a great time then so we decided to book Scran and Scallie is the brainchild of Tom Kitchin and offers relaxed gastro pub style dining, with mismatched furniture and neutral colourings. Scran and Scallie. After perusing the menus, I opted for both my starter and main from the specials menu; wood pigeon on toast with hazelnut salad followed by a Sunday roast of beef with veg and a Yorkshire pudding. My dining companions went for goats cheese and beetroot salad and salmon ravioli for their starters and they both went for the fish pie for their main.
I must be some kind of foodie Jedi and I'll tell you why. I *really* wanted to win our christmas raffle prize which was a three course meal with wine at The Scran & Scallie - the fabulous gastropub in my hood. I said as much a few times but it was a raffle and there were over a hundred bods at our christmas do so my chances weren't particularly high. But I won it! And I rarely win anything (without working very hard for it) so I reckon I must have willed it through sheer mind-force. The raffle was in aid of SANDS Lothian - a charity close to my heart and so I thought it was only right that I thank the pub and the 'force' with a review.
The Scran and Scallie is Tom Kitchin’s latest venue, a stylish gastro pub offering relaxed dining and fresh Scottish produce reflecting his ‘from nature to plate’ ethos. On our arrival, as we hadn’t pre-booked, the friendly staff offered us a table at the bar area and gave us the option to have a drink while we waited for a table, or we could eat there. We decided to wait for a table in the restaurant in order to get the full experience and after a short wait we were seated in the rustic and cosy restaurant.
After our amazing meal at The Kitchin on our last visit to Edinburgh I knew already that we would have to repeat the experience. But as we were travelling with Mark, who is a meat and potatoes kind of guy, I made a reservation at The Scran & Scallie instead. Tom wanted to create a place where families could come to enjoy a meal, with their children. And on the night we were there, one of the ‘children’ was the most adorable Boxer.
Thursday nights are the best date nights. After a hectic week that’s very nearly over, there’s nothing better than sharing a bottle of chilled wine, or sipping that first G&T, and enjoying some good food and even better company. But here’s a question for you – where would you go for date night in Edinburgh? Where would you book, or like to be taken, depending on who is reading this, for that first, all impressive date night? When match.com posed that question to Mr F&P and myself, we both knew exactly where to head…
I liked the brick like look of an old pub in Scotland. The service was on point and very polite. The food was okay , well cooked and presented beautifully. It was my first time trying pigeon and it was lovely. I was in love with desserts!
This was yet another place with a fancy reputation but mixed reviews that I wanted to try first hand. The nice thing about the Scran & scallie is there are always a few tables that are unreserved and thus available on the day, although you may have to wait a little. We settled in at the bar and ordered cocktails and eventually landed a table. The food was pretty amazing. My fish was perfectly cooked and well flavoured. The portions were generous too. My *favourite* part was the dessert, pure delight! Well worth a trip imho.
Beautiful place in the heart of Stockbridge. Amazing food, nice people. The Stockbridge Sling is the best cocktail I have ever had. Book in advance for a special occasion. Also recommended for families with kids and groups of friends.
Been to the kitchen in leith and this new venture is equally as good at a reduced price. All three courses where excellent, presented like a Michelin star restaurant but in a more laid back atmosphere. Apple crumble was unbelievable! Not any faults with this place, would happily return.
Scran and Scallie does dining out properly! Great food, great atmosphere, great service and great prices. The steak pie is phenomenal! Scran & Scallie is a definite must in Edinburgh!
Its been on my Dying to try list for ages and finally got around to going one Saturday after a heavy gym session. It was amazing, All round amazing!!
After much deliberation over a pot of tea I went for the special of Ham, Egg and Chips.
When it arrived it was not what i was expecting. The meat was so tender it feel of the bone. The chips were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Best chips I've ever had!!
I would of like a runny egg yolk to dip my chips in but everything was so yummy I got over it soon enough.
The decor, staff and food were brilliant. They really has created perfection here.
Cant wait to get back to try more from the menu.
You can read more about my visit in my December blog post titled : I knocked another one off my list
I’ve had The Kitchin restaurant in Edinburgh at the top of my most wanted list for a long time. They have a long waiting list (I’m not the best planner that far in advance) and it would need to be saved for a special occasion so we have not made it yet. Then I heard about The Scran & Scallie, a gastropub in Edinburgh owned by Tom Kitchin & Dominic Jack. They do not accept reservations so there was no real planning required except from getting there before peak dining time because I’d heard that they fill up pretty quickly.
There are a lot of 30th birthday celebrations going on this year and this was one of them. Therefore we arrived in Edinburgh later than planned as we took a gin and tonic detour! To set us up for the walk to Stockbridge we nipped into Harvey Nichols fourth floor Window Bar to enjoy a cocktail with that amazing view.
It took us about half an hour to walk to Stockbridge but I enjoy looking at all of the old buildings and indulging in a bit of house lust. We arrived about 4.30pm but we were told that they don’t start serving food until 5pm (they also serve lunch earlier) so we could sit and have a drink until service starts. The bar area is quite small and appears to be more for people having a drink waiting for tables than an actual bar.
Tables have to be back in an hour and a half in the restaurant area. To me The Scran & Scallie is not a pub because in a pub that does food they usually serve meals all day, you’d wouldn’t be told to give the table back so soon on a Wednesday and there would be more people using it as a boozer. It felt more like a restaurant. Not a problem but that is how it appeared to me. If we had arrived an hour earlier I would have been annoyed that the website did not state the food service times and table back policy. We’d come all the way from Glasgow for it- the least they can do in return is be upfront. That is not to take away from the place because the decor and feel of it is a delightful mix of Scottish and Scandinavian with simple furnishings and lots of wood. I really enjoyed our visit.
Warm bread arrived in a mini sack and I had soon forgotten about our table wait.
Their whole ethos is ‘from nature to plate’ so I knew that the squat lobster ravioli with asparagus would be freshly made. The three ravioli were in a creamy but fresh sauce and the asparagus was fantastic with it.
Ox tongue on toast should be the new comfort food, it certainly ticks the rich and satisfying boxes. The bone marrow continued the theme with its jellied meatiness. And the egg, I’m not sure it was even needed, but I never question a soft egg on my plate. Especially a flavoursome, proper farm egg.
Steak pie, hogget, steak pie, hogget? Choices, choices. I really wanted the ham and chips but I didn’t want us to order the same main. I had never tried hogget before so I didn’t want to pass up an opportunity. It is a slow cooked meat and had an even softer texture than lamb shank. Darker in colour, it is more intense than meat from a younger sheep. To be honest, I found it too strong in flavour for me. I liked the peas surrounding it but felt that some mash would not have gone amiss. I ordered a side of potatoes as well but they did not really match up with the dish and just notched the already expensive (£19) price up.
The ham, egg and chips came with a side of contented silence. The presentation got top marks from us, the taste of the ham also got top marks. The homemade pineapple salsa is something that we’ve tried to recreate since but have never managed to get it exactly correct. In my opinion the egg did not need the breadcrumbs but that’s being pernickity. I hope that this dish never comes off the menu.
As I mentioned before, the hogget was rich and I couldn’t manage the whole thing so took it home with me to give to Mr S. Bar my vaccum packed steak at Chez Bruce, it was the fanciest looking doggy bag I’d had.
Apple crumble came with its own jug of custard. Great balance ratio of fruit to crumble with a slight crunch on top.
I chose lemon curd and meringue & it came in an elegant champagne coupe. It was a cross between a lemon posset and lemon curd with a layer of biscuity crumble and then delicate piped meringues sitting on top. Lovely.
It is undeniable that I was impressed by The Scran & Scallie. The food was all of a high standard and the presentation impressive. I still feel slightly confused by the marketing but maybe that’s just me. I won’t be back for three courses because I felt rushed at the end but the ham, egg and chips warrants a second visit.

Cauliflower Cheese. In any other place if I saw that on the menu I'd probably skip past. All the meat eaters I was with at Scran and Scallie felt sorry for me ordering Cauliflower Cheese. Don't tell them through, it was the BEST Cauliflower Cheese I have ever tasted, ever dreamed of. It was THE Cauliflower Cheese.
I guess you'd expect it to be great, it's Tom Kitchens place in Stockbridge after all, but not this great. Making something so simple taste so unforgettable is a real talent, and my guess is everything from the menu gets the same level of attention.
The Scran and Scallie has a totally relaxed atmosphere with a totally extravagant feel, it's a total treat to eat and drink there. The team spoil you, but don't fawn over you. The bread arrives and sets the scene for a brilliant meal. The drinks are perfectly poured. And that Cauliflower Cheese! Did I mention how wonderful it was?
This place really is worth the trip to Stockbridge! Scran and Scallie is a joint venture between two of Edinburgh's Michelin-starred chefs, Tom Kitchin and Dominic Jack. It's a 'public house with dining' that has joined the many fancy places in Stockbridge to spend your evenings.
The stripped-back, bare-brick, walls with mis-matched tables is very cool and on trend and goes well with the ethos of down-to-earth food and friendly attitude of the staff. They take reservations but always set aside a number of tables for walk ins if you are prepared to wait. As you enter you have a few tables and a bar with loads of great Scottish beer on tap and in bottles. The wine selection is also good but has some fantastic house wine options too. There are Scottish gins, whiskies, ciders and drinks from further afield. A short cocktail list is obviously a new addition and has some tempting Scottish themed options.
The menu has Yer Starters, Yer Mains and Yer Desserts and also small bits (sides), vegetarian dishes and salads. You have all the pub favourites on the menu such as steak and chips, sausage and mash or fish pie, a Wagyu Beef burger is a more exotic take on the usual burger and chips. Others are just plain odd, including Sheeps Heid broth, bone marrow and Pig Ear carpaccio! We tried them all in an adventurous moment of madness! I can say that the bone marrow was lovely but it is really greasy and makes you feel like your arteries are clogging up! Pigs ears are also pretty darn tasty but there was the odd chewy bit that draw your attention to the whole 'I'm eating ears' and was a bit off putting! The normal starters like mackerel ceviche are a much better bet and was fantastic.
We had a fab steak pie with lovely chunks of meat in a rich meaty sauce and proper pastry. What was really lovely was that the meat wasn't the usual cheap stringy pie filling but proper cuts of beef. A little chunk of bone marrow really made the dish. Hake with artichoke barigoule was my partners choice which was a lovely dish but he was clearly suffering from food envy looking at the pie feast! For 3 of us to have starters, mains and drinks was £90 which I think was pretty good value. We will be going back and top on my list is the huge selection of game that was on the menu from pheasant to grouse and everything else in between. A really great dining pub well worth the visit.
With their lunch three-course set menu priced at £15, I left the place thinking I should be giving them more money. This is real gourmet pub food. Down to earth, hearty British classics but upgraded. Instead of your average banger and mash you get this beautiful venison sausage with the crispiest of onion rings. The lobster ravioli are simply divine (not part of the set lunch menu). The fish is always perfectly cooked, the bread and butter they give you in the beginning are the same as they serve in their Michelin-Starred sister restaurant, The Kitchin. Expect the same sort of service as well. Just a brilliant restaurant.

The Scran & Scallie has one of those menus that drives you mad with indecision. We’d been peeking at it before our visit, fuelling Ade’s dreams about crispy pigs ears and pork scratchings. This gastropub is Tom Kitchin‘s latest venture overseen by head chef David Umpherson. It’s just outside the centre of Edinburgh in Stockbridge, a villagey area with a real foodie feel. A little farmers market pops up on a Sunday, offering everything from pheasants with their feathers still intact to Japanese street food.
A warm and friendly welcome awaited and continued throughout our meal, nothing was too much trouble. We sat and admired the decor – a mash-up of Scandinavian influences and tartan, muted earthy tones and cosy tweed. Nibbling (well, very noisily crunching) on crispy pig skin and sipping on a glass of sweet and hoppy Fyne Ales Hurricane Jack £2.50 we took one last look at that menu. The other Michelin star chef who created the menu here with Tom is Dominic Jack, who we hear loves his fish. With this fact in mind I decided to start with Classic mussels £6 – something I wouldn’t normally go for, they were good but not enough liquor had soaked through the flesh of the fish, and they were a tad on the rubbery side. Ade also opted for fish with Curried crayfish £7 – super fresh and flavoursome crayfish in a crisp lettuce bowl. The ingredients were of such incredible quality that even the flavour of the humble spring onions jumped off the plate.

Wow! We went out in search of an early dinner Sunday evening and just happened upon this place. The menu looked interesting and the interior inviting, so we decided to put our names in for a table. Good thing we were so early, as they were completely booked from 8pm.
It's a bit on the expensive end of what we'd spend for a casual night out, but absolutely worth it given the quality of the food, drinks, service, and atmosphere. We didn't even look at the wine list as we were excited to try out some of the craft ales on tap. For a starter we had the crab claws. I think my main was described as artichoke with cacao beans; its unique flavors and (mostly) fresh ingredients distracted me from the fact that the artichoke itself was probably from a jar. Green spelt salad was fresh and tasty.
The portions were just small enough that we were up for splitting a dessert. We chose the syrup sponge, which was kind of like a sweet cornbread with some carmel and vanilla sauce. Very high quality and well done, just like the rest of the meal.
Service was good and friendly - I don't think I've ever seen such a high waitstaff-to-customer ratio before.
Probably the best value for money option I had during my trip to Edinburgh. The fish pie, the haggis and the sticky pudding were exceptional! Everything else we tried was also really good. My only objection was with the meat pie as I believe it needed more seasoning maybe but nonetheless I was more than eager to eat it. If I am ever back in Edinburgh, this place will be the first on my list to revisit!
Absolutely amazing place. From the moment you are walk in and are greeted by the staff you know it’s going to be a good experience. All the staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the food. The drink menu is extensive and the food while looking humble and simple is absolutely incredible. I can’t recommend this place enough.
I do have to say that if your coming by car come early as a lot of the street parking is permit holders only and is very busy anyway. Good luck.
Wonderful food served with great presentation. Make sure you save room for dessert! The service was over the top. Huge selection of drinks. The bar tender was very knowledgeable. He came to the table and helped me pick out a whiskey flight. We went on a Saturday night, make sure you get reservations.
Dinner at S&S was one of our favorite meals during our holiday in Scotland. The staff was friendly, the ambience is top notch and the food was great. Highly recommend trying the Haggis, Fish Pie and Toffee Pudding.
The food was great, the atmosphere was nice, the staff went above and beyond to make sure that we are enjoying our time, meeting all our requests. Special thank you to Milan/Dylan (I’m sorry if I didn’t get it right) for making our experience unforgettable.
Absolutely fantastic! We recently visited Edinburgh for the weekend and ate at The Scran and Scallie. The menu is filled with classic gastro pub meal. So not overly pretentious in any way shape or form. I have a mushroom special which was great and beautifully presented. After much deliberation i decided to go for the steak pie. I was not disappointed! Absolutely wonderful. The restaurant is cozy with a good atmosphere. Drinks menu is vast and should cater well for drinkers and non drinkers alike. Service was fantastic as you would expect. Sticky toffee pudding to finish was class. We had deliberated a couple of Michelin star restaurants in the area but we were really happy with our choice. Would highly recommend!
Very well executed Scottish food
What a lovely restaurant.
Had the scallops and the salmon to start with. The salmon dish was outstanding, great quality, very tasty sauce and bread.
Nice scallops maybe slightly bland.
Fish and chips was very generous, be careful as the chips arrive super hot (too hot). They were so succulent though.
The lamb shoulder as a croquette (a special of the day) : I found the croquette dry and yes there was a sauce (super hot again) I found that with the mash potatoes, there was not enough sauce. The pea mash, the potatoes mash and the sauce were very tasty.
Nice sticky toffee but yet again the caramel sauce was too hot.
Need to adjust the temperature of the sauces as burning your tongue is not ideal!
Would recommend it as overall it was a very nice diner and the service is spotless
Walked in for early dinner, recommend reservations to have good seating and more than an hour at a table. Had a good Salmon on grains & greens dish, couple glasses of wine. Excellent server.
Great food, especially Haggis starter and mushroom toast, amazing steak pie and fantastic selection of beer. Lovely friendly staff who made us very welcome. Highly recommend.
We had a lovely lunch after walking from the Royal Academy of Art. The service was tops and the food was excellent. We both enjoyed. Try the house made ginger beer.
We had a wonderful lunch at this small restaurant in Stockbridge, the mushroom toast was a standout with wild chanterelles, fried egg, crisp bacon, and a veal glace on top of a sourdough toast, delicious! Vegetable sides and a wonderful grilled mackerel rounded out the lunch nicely. Drinks menu included a nice selection of non-alcoholic cocktails, the ginger tincture was nicely balanced.
4.2 A lovely gastropub in the Stockbridge area of Edinburgh. Service was terrific. Food was good, but not as good as I had anticipated based on other reviews. The seared scallops, fresh oysters and trout rillet were stand outs. The mains were solid. A good, diverse cocktail and wine list as well as alcohol free beer which was good to see. I recommend a visit.
Food was actually quite good except the piece of cold, dry bread to start. I went to this restaurant twice and found the same service issue with the daily specials and the prices were not written down on the menu or a "board". As a result, either the customer had to ask then the server started to mechanically recite the dishes without the price, and then the customer might ask for the price if he/she was interested. At one occasion, the price was given wrongly, with only a few pounds difference, but I had found ordering from the daily specials troublesome.
Cozy restaurant with great drinks, amazing food and exceptional service. Every dish was amazing! Would love to go back and try more dishes. We enjoyed the Cullen skink, fish pie, their chicken special and the sticky toffee pudding. Highly recommend.
Really excellent experience from start to finish. We were very well looked after by Matt and the team for a delicious meal with champagne and wine. The best haggis I've had by far. Couldn't recommend this place highly enough.
First time in Edinburgh and was looking to try a highly recommended dinner spot. Vibe and atmosphere did not disappoint, relaxed family friendly yet still a proper dining experience with fantastic staff. We tried the oysters, scallops, asparagus and cured salmon for appetizers- all were fantastic. As for the mains (here is where I give it 4 stars and not 5) albeit being super fresh and visually appealing they were a bit bland or missing the mark . Monkfish was fresh and well cooked, but the most interesting part of the dish was the peas; The cod was again super fresh but the bacon overpowered the cod vs lending it seasoning; The fish pie had delicious potatoes but the fish could have used more seasoning to round out the dish.
Overall a solid restaurant, perhaps we were just taken with the passion of the waitress and her description of the meals and our expectations were not met :). I would go back and try some of their meat dishes as the other reviews speak highly of them.
Excellent food. Getting to experience my first fish pie and a spin on haggis, neeps, and tatties at a gastropub was a real delight.
The fish pie was understated but perfectly cooked. Each chunk (and there were plenty!) of salmon and haddock was beautifully cooked beneath a creamy potato topping.
The haggis, neeps, and tatties were an unctuous but small affair that had us wanting more but also feeling very content with the perfect taste.
The salmon rillette left a lot to be desired. It had potential but ultimately fell flat. A simple seasoning of salt and acid (perhaps pickling the cucumbers?) would have boosted it significantly.
Finally, the sticky toffee pudding was divine. I have no other sticky toffee to compare it to in the UK, but how could it possibly disappoint?
