Me and three ex work colleagues went to the City Restaurant for our 3 monthly meet up and like all previous meet ups we weren't disappointed in the food, service or price. We all had three courses each, none of us ordered the same thing, we had soft drinks, latte and tea and the bill came to only £75. The standard of the food and the care taken to present it on the plate is first class! I go in at least twice a week at lunch time and I'm always pleased with my lunch. A nice touch is as soon as you go in the door your are welcomed by all the staff and when you're leaving they all thank you!
The restaurant had a trendy atmosphere with hints of retro feel. Great friendly staff. We had ordered for Breaded & Battered Haddock. The food came with a nice fillet of Haddock, generous portion of chips and mushy peas. The fish was fresh and well prepared. We were also glad that the restaurant was open till late.
If you want a real taste of Scottish “cuisine”, look no further than City Restaurant. It’s not too far from the Royal Mile and its location means that it is a firm favourite during the festival season. It’s quick, dirty, and I love it!
Classic 60's Style. Stepping into this cafe / chippie is like stepping back in time. However, all the fittings and decor are clean and fresh. It's all beautifully done and with the freindly helpful staff it's no wonder it's so busy. My spicy haggis, chips and peas were excellent and the scottish tablet milk shake was a treat. So top marks for the City Restaurant for an enjoyable experience.
Came here to try their legendary fish and chips and it did not disappoint!! The fish was extra big, I had to take away and left me both super full. It was fresh, the fish meat was not smell fishy at all, batter was extra crunchy and flavourfull.. I like their tartar sauce and brown sauce too, it adds depth.
Pancake stack was just ok though
The staffs were all lovely and quick. Good job. No wonder this restaurant has been running long 👍🏻
Popped in here for breakfast/lunch and the food and service was unbelievable.
I got the breakfast roll with 3 items (sausage, rashers and egg) and this roll was stuffed with 2 sausages, 2 rashers and an egg extremely great value for less than £6.
The menu has something for everyone. Highly recommended this place if you're looking for a quick bite to eat.
Very cozy diner, super nice staff and amazing food! Didn’t know what to expect but was super surprised! Also great value for the amount of food you get!
Great place to try local dishes like haggis.
Overall great experience, lovely staff. Also we're from Belgium and weren't expecting fries with an omelette so just know what you're getting into.
We also had a milkshake to go, and that one was amazing
There are lots of classic British courses to order from here such as fish & chips and haggis, neeps & tatties. I went for the steak pie as my main course and it was irresistible, with lots of proper gravy to pour over it and the chips as well. I also recommend the lentil soup and knickerbocker glory, they were both scrumptious.
It's a nice restaurant for from the city centre with friendly staff. We tried fish and chips and the steak pie, and both of them were delicious. The deep fried mars bar is also worth trying.

Still one of my favourite places to grab dinner in the city. Food is always fresh and portions are excellent sizes!!
Family friendly, excellent food, short waiting times, great service! Great value for money. Highly recommend!
Food was, in my opinion, EXCELLENT.
Lovely seating area upstairs.
Staff very very polite and mannerly.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Very delicious breakfast with plenty of options to choose from including vegan. Food was prepared in about 5 minutes. Polite staff, clean and relaxing environment. Haven't tried lunch or dinner yet, but definitely would come back again in the future.
Visited this restaurant for lunch and had traditional fish and chips. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The prices were reasonable. The food was delicious. The fish was battered to perfection, the chips were thick cut, and the mushy peas were very tasty.
I tried their haddock fish and chips and it did not disappoint. Love the ambiance of the place as well. Great service and good food. Their prices are reasonable as well for the amount of food they give you. I got a side of turnips on the side and they were really delicious.
Surprisingly good fish and cheap tea. Very busy, especially if there's a show on next door at the Festival Theatre. Booking advised. We will definitely be back.
I have visited a couple of times now and I can say that with every visit I have been met by welcoming staff and I have been seated and served quickly. The food was lovely and very competitively priced. All in all a lovely dining experience
Fantastic Fish n Chip restaurant. We sat in a clean booth with polite and helpful serving staff. The fish was delicious and chips spot on. Plenty of condiments to go on the side. Not a massive portion, but a good filling size. Probably the best fish and chip restaurants in the UK.
Go!!! The fish and chips are AMAZING and a very reasonable price. I also got the shrimps as an appetizer but I’d skip them next time and stick with the fish. Very good crust and perfectly cooked fish in the middle! The tartar sauce is incredible (far superior than anything I’ve had in the US) and the chips are very distinct and cooked perfectly. If I ever go back to Edinburgh (which I absolutely need to), this is a first stop for me!
The waiter was so sweet, I am a deaf person and it’s quite a loud atmosphere she was very accommodating, writing down her questions in case I didn’t hear and even offered to turn the music down (which I said no to but flattered). She went above and beyond. Overall it is a loud atmosphere but the food and the staff make it great.
Amazing food, great staff! If you're in Edinburgh, this is the place to go for a great meal.
