After walking along the Water of Leith walkway, a quick bite was required. Cafe Braw was just the ticket - welcoming and delicious food on offer. A cheese scone to accompany a real treat of soup - chilli beef with the offer of natural yoghurt if one felt the need to cool the spice down - no need for the latter on this occasion and oh boy - oodles of flavour. Broccoli and blue cheese quiche also hit the mark and we headed home with just a sample of the wide selection of sweet temptations to enjoy later on. A very happy encounter!
This cafe is clearly well known and supported by local residents. Compostable cups, plates and cutlery is also very commendable as previously commented upon by other reviewers.
It was a dreich, miserable day the first time m'Esteemed Colleague and I first stumbled upon Cafe Braw. We'd just been to a flat viewing in Dean Village which we'd completely mistimed (we still saw the flat thankfully and ended up going for it!) but our bellies were aching and we needed some sustenance were we to even consider continuing our voyage. Thankfully this little eaterie was there to save our spirits! We sat down and almost immediately the super-friendly staff engaged us in a properly heartwarming conversation, soothing our brows after a fretful day. The food was all delicious too, and I'm very happy to have Braw on my doorstep.
I've nipped in a few times now, what with the cafe being mere yards from my front door, and every visit has been a delight! It's only ten minutes walk from Haymarket Station, but this wee stunner can be a bit tricky to find. The serene surroundings make it more than worth the trip, it feels a million miles from the madness and mayhem of the main areas of Edinburgh. Head North from the station, along Palmerston Place, then take a right at the Belford Hostel (It's in a big pointy building at the end of Palmerston, you can't miss it!) then get comfy and enjoy!
PS The Thai Chicken Soup is utterly fantastic, definitely try if it's SotD!
A delightful little gem of a deli hidden just above Dean Village (if you're in the village I highly recommend checking it out).
The staff are really excellent, honestly some of the most friendly people I have ever been served by, it seemed that they had some friends over at a large table and were prompted to join them. We of course accepted and boy am I glad we did. Situations like this rarely ever happen and it was delight to converse with some total strangers for a short snack.
The food is marvellous and extremely cheap! I had salt beef and potatoes dauphinoise and it was delectable, for only £3.50 it was a complete steal!
Highly recommend this place.
Me and my husband visited yesterday for the first time. Plenty of choice on the menu which changes everyday. I had the Tomato and Basil Soup and my husband had the potato stovies and we shared a sausage and bacon 'doubler'. The owner had a great bubbly personality and was very knowledgeable about her products and the area she is located in. Dean Village is a short walk from her location. All products are freshly made every day!!
Came across this wee cafe on a walk in a very, very heavy rain shower. Immediately made welcome by the lovely owner who knew we needed something warm! Hot chicken, bacon and leek pie went down went down a treat. As did some housemade tiffin for sweet.
Very reasonably priced, plenty of options for veggies and GF dietary requirements and the cutlery and containers are biodegradable too!
Lovely soup. Freshly made roll. Entirety of flatware was compostable too.
Great café with a really friendly owner. Only does filter coffee buts it’s really good filter coffee! Scones are excellent and the place is handy if you are walking along the detour at the Water of Leith or if you are in Dean Village.
Everything is freshly made and has a good variety for vegans, vegetarians and gluten free.
Also Meg, the owner, is one the loveliest people I've ever met. Plus, everything is biodegradable and it's been that way since 2012!
Would 100% recommend
Meg is the sweetest lady I've met! She makes fresh food, and has a lot of variety according to the different diets (Vegan, vegetarian, gluten free) Plus, she has a zero waste cafe, cups and cutlery are compostable! You should totally visit her!
A small, open shop in a terrific location, fronted by a talkative and welcoming owner. The food looked as good as it tasted (i.e. no pretention or flash, but absolutely fabulous). The hot drinks were equally good, and to top it off the prices could not have been more reasonable.
Also good to know that all disposable utensils are recyecled /composted. Will definitely return for another "mighty fine cup of tea" asap
Barry wee place. Good service. Good coffee. And... There aren't many places left that you can simply ask for a 'coffee' without having to give it a modern trendy name. Top marks!
Amazing little place, a lot of love goes into making the food! I love the ethos and atmosphere when you walk in, lovely people. I would highly highly recommend the stromboli. I promise it'll be one of the most amazing, best value things you come across in a while!
I've lost my way to office as a courtesy of Google maps. Accidentally landed at this place ...and found an amazingly "friendly staff, tasty food at fair price". Tried the Scottish vegetarian Haggis, it was so delicious. I'd highly recommend this place!
Not only did I get delicious food from Meg, the extremely friendly owner, but also valuable advice on how to best spend my time in Edinburgh, given that I had only 5 hours before the departure of my train. She made me feel home immediately in a city (and country) that I visited for the first time, and that I had just arrived in.
Lovely café near Dean Village with a nice selection of local savouries and desserts... Vanilla oatcakes were amazing!
Highly recommended for anyone in the area that is looking for somewhere to stop and enjoy coffee and some food.
I popped in to take a breather from walking the Water of Leith. What a find, the ladies here are lovely.
The food is very good and the prices are very reasonable.
Plus the location in the beautiful Dean village is a bonus too.
A little gem in a quiet part of town.
It's a lovely place near Dean Village. It was delicious and very reasonably priced. I'd also like to point out that the owner cares about the environment.
We were walking along the Water of Leith Walkway through Dean Village when we stumbled upon this cafe. Delicious offerings and very friendly service. You won’t be disappointed. We were even coaxed into trying our first taste of Haggis. Not too shabby.
What a great little find! Traipsing through magical Dean Village one day, I wanted lunch. I asked some passerby’s and the told me to “go up this hill and turn right” and there it was. Fun little outdoor eatery with just a couple of tables but everything is made fresh in front of you as if you were in someone’s kitchen. Food was delicious. The cheese was amazing! Just a fun place to grab something quick and authentic in the beautiful, mystical Dean Village.
Owner is a very sweet lady. She is enjoying the recently got egg boiling machine that automatically boils n peels the eggs. Food is awesome and tasty, services are best. Cute little neighborhood cafe. Vegetarian Haggis role, was delicious, so was freshly baked croissant. Ohh and everything that looked plastic was actually compostable vegware, just brilliant. Love you Meg! - the bitter guy needing lots of sugar in the coffee
Fantastic woman - we had a lovely conversation about history, politics and life. The coffee, scones and shortbread were tasty.
Cute little food stop that serves coffee some hot food. I had the pea soup and it was delicious! Definitely worth a visit.
