Reviews No 11 Brasserie

We stayed here for two nights in a second floor room. The room was large and comfortable with a lots of storage. The building is beautiful. We were treated to this by our children. We loved the location as not far from the center and and easy walk from the station. On our first evening the five course taster menu was included in the price. Our experience was mixed. The dining room is really quite dark and the meal was over in an hour... The price was £63.50 each which was quite rich for what we ate. I would probably just choose al la Carte if we returned. The fish dish just tasted of Vodka and the cock a leekie soup had no flavor at all.

Overall I would recommend this hotel as the staff were very attentive and our stay was good. We loved Edinburgh..

We went for an early Sunday evening meal using a very reasonable voucher from 5pm.co.uk

Service

Falling in line with past reviews I'd agree the service was slightly haphazard but this was mainly caused by an air of awkwardness due to language barriers. After embracing this we found the staff to be both polite and took every opportunity to engage with us and give their own unbiased recommendations.

Food

Very good. Being a a set menu deal the portions appeared to be smaller than those without vouchers, but this was perfectly reasonable for the price. My starter of mussels pakora was something I've not encountered, and was very moreish. There was no hint of dryness as can often be the case with pakoras. The crispy squid that accompanied this had a tasty dusting of spices. Crucially, it also avoided any resemblance to chewing a tyre which can so easily occur with squid when cooked a few seconds too long. Overall the starter was was more Michelin, less Michelin tyre.

For main I had halibut. A favourite of mine for it's ability to flaunt the lines between fish and the more fleshier meat of the land. It was moist whilst easily flaked into meaty chunks with my fork. It was accompanied by a sweet potato fondant alongside quick fried spring onion and chicory. A drizzle of port reduction brought the dish together.

Desert was a dark chocolate & baileys cheesecake with raspberry & champagne coulis. The dark chocolate was most definitely apparent, less so the baileys contribution. I'm more of a savoury man, but those with a sweet tooth would have loved it.

Praises: lovely personable staff, well executed dishes, very reasonably priced set menu (on this occasion via 5pm.co.uk)
Niggles: lacklustre drinks cabinet with most spirits and draught being more supermarket sweep, than sweep me of my feet.

First review, I'll work on capturing the photos in future!

No. 11’s menu offered a plethora of dishes that you could have just shut your eyes and selected your dish with a random finger point– the selection of dishes was that appealing. Nevertheless, we had to choose and I went for the Isle of G

I don't know about you, but I always have high expectations when I book an afternoon tea. I have to say that No. 11 Brunswick Street not only met those expectations, but surpassed them. I think it was possibly the best afternoon tea I have had anywhere (and I've sampled a fair few). The sandwiches (so often disappointing) were fresh and delicious, as was the moist and generous selection of cakes and the scones were as good as they looked. The staff were friendly and personable (both the lady who greeted us and the waiting staff) and didn't rush us out when it got to 4.30pm. Go and see for yourself!

I'm going to be honest and say that up until receiving the Groupon email (a while back), I had never head of No. 11, but I'm glad I did! What a fantastic place! The dining room is beautiful, with artwork on the walls, all of which you can buy.
The offer that I purchased was 'Scottish Tapas' for two and IT WAS AMAZING. The food itself was beautifully presented and tasted wonderful, we even got to a small (piping hot) frying pan so that we were able to fry the strips of steak to our liking. We even got cranachan for desert!
The menu is varied, but I do suggest giving the Scottish Tapas a go, you will not be disappointed!
I'm giving it a 4.5.

Brunswick Street is tucked in to the area between Elm Row and London Road. The row of houses that No 11 is part of is surprisingly elegant. They break with the rest of the street: elegant pillars hold porticoes that double a balconies over the entrance. The buildings are four stories, three above ground and one below, set back from the pavement so there’s light in the basement too.

No 11 stands out even among this collection of houses. Its pillars and wall are painted a rich, clean gray. No 11 is one of Edinburgh’s newest boutique hotels. I went there for the launch of the No 11 Hotel and Brasserie.

The hotel is beautifully restored and the rooms luxurious. It’s a small hotel and each of the 10 rooms have their own individual character. I enjoyed the hallway, with its beautiful tiles floor, bowed by years of rough treatment, and the tall staircase. The room we saw was also gorgeous: deep teal walls, a four poster bed and a luxurious bath tub made it a place I’d love to stay. But of course, since this is Edinburgh Foody, we’re even more interested in the food than the rooms.

The brasserie is in the front room, a typically Georgian room with tall ceilings and elegant proportions. Diners should be comfortable here. To make it more comfortable, as well as an interesting and interactive space, it’s also a gallery. When I was there, the walls were hung with colourful pictures by Chloë Gardner. They form a conversation point as well as decoration. The brasserie aims to offer “top class food in a relaxed environment“, to quote Susan Grant, one of the two owners. Susan and husband Hamish, wants No 11 to be more than just a place where people sleep. The brasserie is open for lunch, dinner and luxury afternoon tea.

Ryan Smith is the head chef. He wants to serve healthy, delicious food. Dishes that are well cooked and shows off the ingredient’s best side. He’s working on snacks and dips that are healthy as well as delicious. He thinks food should be local and seasonal, with all the flavour and colour kept in. He works with local suppliers for everything from breads through meats, cheeses, chocolate and coffee.

Ryan wants the dining experience to be social and fluid. If you want to have several starters, or one main course, you can.

We tried some home made chips and vegetable leathers with home made dips, and a rather pleasing mackerel on crisp bread. From the main selection, I enjoyed the lamb with a young and very sharp lime pickle. The lime pickle worked well with the lamb and I enjoyed the texture and tart flavour of the peel on the generous lime wedges.

These dishes are not yet on the menu. The sample dinner stays traditional and safe with Scottish favourites like cullen skink, scallops and black pudding, wild mushroom barley risotto and smoked venison. Ryan mentioned varying portion sizes and as a meat eater with a tall vegetarian boyfriend, I know how useful that could be. The vegetarian main is often a tiny little thing, not at all sized for a regular appetite. It’ll be interesting to go back for a full meal.

We arrived early, around 9am after a 18 hour travel day from US. The staff was amazingly helpful. They allowed us to leave our suitcases in the check in area so that we could go roaming the City until check in time. We were exhausted when we arrived so the staff made us the best coffees for a recharge that we enjoyed in the fabulous garden. The rooms were super comfortable. The full Scottish breakfast delicious! And deserts…oh my!!!! I highly recommend No 11. It’s walkable to Princess and Royal Mile but far enough to be out of the hustle and bustle of the City. Loved this place and the staff.

Lovely garden + lovely room (a few steps to get to our room though!); the only let-down was a broken fan (replaced, but still not great), and an unseasonably warm September when we stayed here. Staff helpful, eager to please, and the location and proximity to spots we wanted to visit during our stay made it fantastic as a result. Impressive-looking bath in the living room (?!) not enjoyed by us, but the huge bathroom was a treat. A solid three-star, we thought, though the staff + garden raised it to a four! Thank you for everything.

We have just spent 3 nights here in the mini-suite (which is really a larger room with a sofa) as part of our Flying Scotsman tour, from London to Aberdeen. Great location 15min walk from the station that thus provides a much less touristy, much quieter, local/suburban vibe in a City full of tourists. I love period properties, so this provided a welcome respite from the hustle & bustle of tourist town. Staff are charming, food is excellent. Do book.

We stayed for one night before going on honeymoon to Bordeaux. Lovely big room with luxurious bathroom and great rainfall shower. Eclectic furnishings and decor. We didn't eat here but had a couple of very good cocktails on our return from dinner. Good location too. We would gladly stay again!!

Had a stupendous stay in an extremely luxurious room. A big bedroom, toilet, huge bathroom with walk in shower, and a little walk in cupboard. The staff were nothing but friendly and approachable, and the breakfast we had on the last day, made me wish we had gone there before.

Top class hotel, old character. Could use a little touch up but nothing major. Expect with old places hot water to go but it was quickly fixed on a weekend by service man. Staff were great, food was great and the room was amazing.

We loved our stay. Room was beautiful and breakfast was gorgeous. We had a small plumbing issue that was dealt with by staff well. One thing we found a little strange and slightly effected us, there was an automatic light in the tiny walkway between the bedroom and the bathroom. It cannot be turned off and at night it meant that any movement in that 1 square meter space, which couldn't be avoided, it lit up the whole bedroom for around 10 seconds. And then again when leaving the bathroom. Would advise the hotel look at being able to have the option of it. Otherwise we loved our stay. Thank you! X

The room was big and had a four poster bed. There was a large bath tub in the bedroom as well as a fully fitted bathroom with a large walk-in shower. The room was quiet and we had a nice stay. The location was perfect as it's very central.

The food is out of this world! Every dish was outstanding. We had Shetland scallops to start, the cod and pork for mains and meuillfille and the goats cheese for dessert. See the photos to see how amazing they all looked.
