What an amazing experience right next to our home. Great and cozy place, really nice and kind staff. We went for linguini with sea food and other choice also with sea food and it was amazing! Really well served! The desert was also dreammy!!!! If I ever go back to Edinburgh I will go back for sure!!!
This was our first dine-in meal in Edinburgh because the location was very close to our hotel. Ordered one kilogram of mussels (white wine, garlic and cream), cullen skink and chips. All tasted delicious, great introduction for Scottish meals. Good choice of restaurant in charming Grassmarket area :)
had a lovely meal here. my husband had fillet steak which was quite expensive - expect Central London prices. My daughter and I ordered a vegetarian pasta dish which was average. they did one order very late, as the order hadn't gone through, but were gracious enough to deduct it from the bill. the house white wine is a bit ropey. the staff are so nice though that you will forgive them anything. It's not a cosy place but bright and modern and clean.
This was rated as the best seafood restaurant in Edinburgh.. so we decided to give it a try
arrived by 7pm and found decent crowd.. staff welcomed us warmly
we ordered famous mussels pot with garlic butter sauce and much hyped scottish oyesters
Taste = 5/5
quality and freshness of food = 5/5
sides = 3/5
the bread and chips on sides were not of great quality.. bread was tooo hard..
ambience and music = 5/5
overalll a fantastic experience
Jedne z najlepszych małży jakie w życiu jadłam. Wydawało się, że garnek nigdy się nie kończy a sos był tak pożywny i gęsty, że pełnił formę zupy. Zdecydowanie warte spróbowania! ❤
Good! The mussel was good! The curry sauce very good as well! The starter salmon tart very very good! Should try the salmon tart and the mussel!
Amazing seafood! Fresh and cooked to perfection. I had the cooked seafood platter and the broth was just too good.. I would recommend this place no worriers.
I went here for dinner last night. First time experience and was not disappoint. Food was great. Nice ambience. Service and the staff was great and very friendly. Definitely come here again and the seafood platter will definitely be my next choice :)

Fantastic place, whenever friends and family come round to visit, this is the place I go, the steaks are fantastic, and selection of wines are great! Fantastic for a date night, lovely service and good laughs!
This definitely is one of my more preferred steak place. Honestly, it's doesn't really have anything to do whether or not it is one of the best steak I've ever had. But actually, it has more to do with it having one of the most CONSISTENTLY reliably good steak. However, it's seafood platter? Not to keen on it...not at all.
One of the best meals I have had in Great Britain. We hadn't booked but they happily fit us in for a quick dinner on a table booked for a little later.
We ordered the scallops to share, and a pot of their 1 kg mussels with whisky, cream and bacon and some bread to mop it up, plus the 3 extra big prawns on top. This was PLENTY of food, we walked away satisfied. The food was amazing, particular the mussels- big, juicy mussels in a delicious sauce which was mopped up with crusty bread. Great comfort food !!
I ate here in late February for my boyfriends birthday and thought it was amazing! Was a lot more pricey than the usual places I eat in Edinburgh, but I think it's because we chose the most expensive dishes on the menu! But it was worth it! We got the haggis Wellington and goats cheese Bon bons to start, so good! For main course my boyfriend had the mixed grill which he said was amazing, though a bit fiddly because some of the seafood was still in its shells. I had the 16oz rump steak and it was cooked to perfection! The staff were great aswell! If you get cold easily ask to be seated upstairs because we kept getting s breeze downstairs from when the door was open! Love this restaurant for its food, service and decor! Definitely recommend the haggis Wellington, rump steak and the baileys cheesecake!
I've only recently discovered that I like mussels, but after visiting the mussel and steak bar on the grass market I now LOVE mussels! They were the tastiest things I've ever put in my mouth.
Me and my boyfriend came here for our one year anniversary dinner and it was lovely, as soon as we walked through the door the delicious smells made my mouth water. We shared a plate of mussels to start ( I wish I had got my own plate though ?). I then had soup for my main and Elliot had a giant steak which he generously let me try, it was cooked to perfection and accompanied by tasty chips.
I will defiantly be coming back. ☺️
Mussels & Steak. Right down the street from our hotel, we first tried to get in on a Saturday night but b/c the restaurant is tiny we had to make reservations the the next night.
Definitely worth the wait.
Had the 'Surf & Turf' with perfectly cooked steak & delicious mussels. Everything was great, including the staff
Excellent. Cannot recommend this place more highly. The mussels were amazing (chilli & lime) and the steaks were melt in the mouth delicious. All topped of with a great bottle of red.
Whilst in Edinburgh for the fringe the place was packed out. There was 4 of us and the staff in here managed to get us a really decent table. The staff were friendly and attentive, the place was packed. I had the seafood linguini which was full of flavor and quite a large portion. On of the party also had a steak which got the thumbs up. I was definitely impressed. The toilets were very clean and modern too. Always a bonus.
Fantastic Restaurant. Went there for a nice quiet meal. The staff had immaculate manners and were friendly and attentive without being intrusive, the food (we had mussels and langoustine) was amazing too, and excellent value for money. I cannot fault one part of the entire experience and will go bck again and again!
I never write reviews but couldnt not when i saw this place here! Go for a meal here and i promise you wont regret it! It was lush xxxx
I would go back to Edinburgh just to go to this restaurant!!!. I was in Edinburgh for the rugby (Scotland V Wales). Hadn't booked anything and asked the cab driver to drop us off somewhere we could get a nice meal. He dropped us at the Mussel & Steak. It was busy, we had to wait for a table which we didn't mind. We were seated within 15 mins and preceeded to have the best steak i have had in years. I would go back to Edinburgh just to go to this restaurant. x
Great food, good service. Didn't try the beef but I'd it's half as good as the seafood then will be awesome. Would also reccommend the oysters.
Loved it loved it loved it. Go there. Stop trying to decide where to go... Just go there!
Sunday lunch really is great value for money.food is very good and the place has a good atmosphere.definately would recommend it
Great food friendly staff. They don't take bookings during the fringe but it's definitly worth the wait!
Great little place to go for a nice meal. Does what it says on the tin. Amazing steak and mussels, not bad price as well. Lunch menu great deal for the food you get. Over all great feel, nice staff, fab food. You must go.
You probably realise by now that I love my steak and given the namesake of the restaurant pretty much suggests you should either try their mussels or steak, I decided on the latter. I really enjoyed the cosy atmosphere of the restaurant, it's small enough to make it intimate but not so small that you feel like you're sharing your table with your next door diners.
The staff were very friendly and are happy to offer suggestions if you're struggling to decide between dishes. The steak was definitely cooked to perfection and I loved every morsel that I ate. By the end, I was patting my full belly in contentment. For a relaxed dining experience with great service in the heart of the city, try The Mussel and Steak.
One of my favourite places in Edinburgh to come for lunch as the lunch is served until 5pm from Fri-Sun. So you can have a lazy day and always pop in for a nice meal. The staff is very friendly. They remember your face and always treat you like a friend. The place is busy most of the times but you can usually be seated without booking. During summer they have an outside seating which is great as Grass Market is well guarded from the wind. So you can sit there for hours enjoying the food and drinks. Their seafood is my favourite, especially the mussels. While I tried the steak many times I think it's good but sometimes they could pay more attention to how you want it to be cooked. It happened to me twice that it was medium or medium well instead of medium rare which I then decided to return and they had no problem giving me a new steak. The second time it always came right. I also enjoy the starters. The brie tart with cranberries is a delicacy while the soup of the day is always home made and fresh. Overall I recommend this place if you want to have a lazy lunch and spend at least an hour enjoying your meal.
I recently had the pleasure of having dinner at The Mussel and Steak Bar
Located in the heart of Edinburgh old town.
The seafood dishes here is absolutely amazing. Fresh ingredients combine with the skillful cooking in a reasonable price. Owner with very kind and staffs are very friendly.
Mussels is my most favorite both with white wine and whisky + smoke bacon + and cream.
Butter + garlic grilled lobster and grilled brown crab is very impressive
The steak is just average. I recommend to order only seafood is enough.
Few choices for the dessert menu. Cheesecake here a bit too sweet.
Better reserve the table in advance since this place usually crowded in the evening time.
The seafood platter and all portion sizes were very big. Oysters were on the house today and tasted very fresh. The steak was nice and tender and sea bass was very flavourful, definitely a recommend. The linguine was a bit bland as the flavour went into the seafood but I still enjoyed the mussels. 👍
Dropped in after a quick Google and was able to get a table for five before the rush. Many things looked really tasty and we ended up ordering surf n turf and the linguine. What we missed was the portions that was humongous. We could easily shared one portion of the linguine.
Also served complimenterary oysters.
You won't leave hungry that is one thing that is for sure.
But prepare your visit because it easily gets crowded here.
Had the Pork Surf and Turf at the Mussel and Steak Bar! The restaurant is a great place to stop by for dinner! They were busy, however they still brought out the food in a timely manner and the service was great! Extremely attentive! The Pork Surf and Turf was extremely scrumptious! The pork was juicy and perfectly charred. Additionally the mussels were so flavourful and tasted fresh!
Absolutely amazing food, very good service, only thing is packing a bit is the fit out not serving it's justice.
It's probably better to reserve in advance as this place is popular. Has decent seafood and meat. The portions are very big in my mind and can become overbearing (the mussels if in the whisky sauce) and I would try lighter dishes next time.
Yes the dinner was excellent n the seafood platter was sumptuous and quality superb ! Thanks so much for ur hospitality ! The service was excellent too ! 👍👍👍🥰
Top-notch service! The seafood linguine was excellent, and you must try the mussels. Additionally, we were pleasantly surprised to receive fresh oysters on the house. It was a nice touch.
Very nice restaurant! Its a busy restaurant so we have booked in advance. Both Oyster and Steak are delicious. And the hidden gem is their desserts!!!!!
Oysters excellent!
