Arrived to pre booked table and the place soon filled up. Greeted with bread olives meet and dressed salad and we all ate well. Pricing reasonable. I had duck and moules frites but passed on pud and had a coffee instead. No one complained and the toilets are not bad! Had been warned that service is very French! It was very good!

Definitely worth a trip when wining and dining in Edinburgh. The set meal that they offer is great value, a tenner-you canni whack it! Salad, bread and ham as you come in and pick from the decent menu options, and the goats cheese starter and steak for main are fab. Good choices and everyone always leaves happy.

Went there on a business dinner and it was a very nice experience. Delicious food, reasonably priced and a great ambience. Only bad thing is that we were a bit crammed, most likely because our group of 16 was a bit too big. But hey, I'd likely go back anytime.

Always loved this place. Prices are reasonable, food is great, atmosphere is relaxed. Only downside? When it's full, it can be extremely noisy (but obviously right).

Fav foods? I love the green salad that comes with the bread and butter. Escargot (of course), onion soup (obviously, this is a French restaurant), duck, steak tartare (sorry, I'm a big steak tartare fan), the sausages, and the gratin dauphinois (absolutely to die for...but this is a big portion and better to be shared).

And because it's a French restaurant...I always go for their house white and red wines (only in 2 cuisines do I have the house wine...French and Italian. Why? Because even the house wine from these countries are already pretty darn good. I'm no wine connoisseur, but I do know the wines from the ones I like and the ones I don't. And I don't believe in paying lots for an insignificant difference).

Yo man, let me tell you something you can easily surmise from every other review posted before mine. Chez Jule is so good that I would go as far as to say that I "like" it, and given that I despise nearly 100% of everything that's pretty high praise.

Listen cupcake, there is a frickin rad item on the menu called a Bourride. If you're an uncultured lout like me then you most likely have no idea what that is. Well sunshine, its pretty much the whole damn ocean served up in some sort of divine sauce from Olympus. No seriously dawg, if you like seafood this is totally your bag. Oh and it's a sharing dish so if you decided to bring another uncultured brute with you then this totally the time to get Frenchified. I've heard there are other things on the menu but I'm a heathen of habit so I've had this twice. TWICE. That's more times than I've drank plain water in the last year, that;s how good it is.

Also good wine.

I give Chez Jules 4 crab shells and half a sunken city out of 5

Been to "Chez Jules" many times over the last 2 years, and I am yet to be disappointed.Being French, I look at French restaurant with a rather overly critical eye, and I have to say, they got it spot on: Great atmosphere, fab music (all French classics), the smell is great (yep, it matters!).
The food is not the fancy nonsense people expect from French restaurant, so no 1/2 mini carrot sitting on a sliver of steak. You get country-side proper portion (I know, I grew up in the French countryside :P).I'd recommend the Steak and Lobster. The snails and frogs are also fab. You get nice salad, saussisson, bread and olives on the table. But you know, merguez, Roast chicken, black pudding... all good.. all VERY good :D

I had heard so many wonderful things about Chez Jules, so I thought it was about time that I check them out. I love the vibe inside so much, art work on the walls and dimmed lighting. It has such a cosy feeling inside. As soon as we were settled at our table, bread, olives, lettuce and salami was brought to our able which was a lovely touch. We all ended up ordering steak and I was pleased to find the service was really quick as I was one hungry lady. The rump steak was delicious and cooked exactly how I wanted it to be. I ended up getting some fries on the side which were pretty lovely too. After our mains, we ordered some coffee but I couldn't exactly not have a dessert. I ended up going for the crepe which was incredibly tasty but I did find it odd that I was given a spoon for it. The spoon was perfect for the ice cream (which was quite possible the tastiest ice cream) but made eating my crepe a little on the tricky side. Overall a great little find and I can see myself going back pretty soon!

On my recent trip to Edinburgh, my cousin brought me round some of her favourite restaurants in Edinburgh. One of them was Chez Jules, a casual friendly bistro that offers classic French dishes. Inside, there are pillars and blackboards on which menus and specials are scrawled in colourful chalk. The lighting is dimmed in the evenings, with a wine bottle drip candle holder on each table to add a bit of a romantic ambience.

Chez Jules, Hannover Street, Edinburgh – 15th May 2014-05-16

Our first adventure of Food Club was a roaring success.

Beers were flowing and Frogs legs were dancing. Garlic filled the air like clouds gathering in a storm. Some Snails were unshelled and a duck leg was devoured. Salmon was leaping from the plate in joy while a plate of meat was served like a feast. Apple and Black pudding was proudly gobbled.

More beers flowed as the main course was served - "Le terre-Mer" (Surf & Turf) was the popular choice, pink tender steak served with a memorable half lobster. "Pommes frites" were on the side with a selection of awe-inspiring sauces. That not to your liking? How about King Scallops with crispy bacon or perhaps a luscious chicken primed for consumption. With the Beer still flowing and volume of banter rising, a manly shout of “LE DESSERT MENUS PLEASE”

The overwhelming choice was for banoffee toffee pie, so sumptuous it was, with sweet caramel and large banana segments chopped kindly throughout. One man was encouraged by the sweet menu and ordered one ball of ice cream doused in that famous French liqueur… VODKA.

The meal ended with the customary payment of the bill and a photo with the lovely staff. It was then time to peruse Edinburgh’s finest taverns to end our evening

Chez Joules does amazing French food for fantastic prices. The set lunch offers 3 courses for £9.95 including some of the best steak and chips I've ever had... And that's before I mention the amazing chocolate mousse. Tres bien!
I was sat at a table with a rather rickety bench which added a bit of excitement to my lunch. A proper chair would have been great.

Absolutely perfect. The service and food were excellent. They have all the French staple dishes on their menu. The atmosphere is very relaxed and youthful, but also very chatty, which I personally like, but might be too loud for some people. 5 star!

I thought Chez Joules was going to be a quaint and cosy kinda place -  but it's about four times the size I expected it to be and (though maybe because it was a Friday night) pretty loud and boisterous. Consequently it might be the sort of place you have to be in the mood for (too-close together tables meant people kept unapologetically barging behind my seat to get passed). But the food is delicious and the service was pretty fast and efficient for being so busy. Four of us shared/devoured the macaroni cheese as a starter then I plumped for the very reasonably-priced rump steak (perfectly cooked and with its own dish of dauphinoise potatoes too). Had a delicious brioche thing with ice cream, caramel and peanuts to end and all washed down with decent red wine. Pas mal!

Upon being seated, we were served their standard complimentary starters of bread and butter, olives and sliced salami, and a heavily dressed bowl of lettuce leaves.
Viv started with the grilled goats cheese which was served on toast with balsamic and sesame dressing. There was a subtle sweetness from the honey, and the walnuts added a bit of a crunchy texture. I went for the sauteed homemade duck confit leg with fresh thyme and garlic. A lovely piece of tender meat, served with a side of mustard to add a bit of spice to it.
The steak tartare was finely chopped and you could taste the luscious flavour of the meat, lightly spiced with Worchester sauce, chilli, shallots and garlic mayo.
Slow braised French rabbit leg with Dijon mustard, white wine, and smoked bacon with gratin dauphinois. Delicious flavours and succulent meat, and the crisp bread that it was served on nicely soaked up all that lovely sauce.
We were really full after all that food that we unfortunately did not have space for dessert.
Overall, we both enjoyed our meal there - the food was simple and satisfying, and it has a really chilled and relaxing atmosphere.

Been to Chez Jules for lunch and really enjoyed it. Food, place, service, decoration were legit good. The portions could be larger however it's totally worth it for the price you're paying. Lunch menu 3 courses for £9,90.
I had goat cheese, coq au vin and creme caramel. My friend had pate campagne, skirt steak and same desert. Everything was very tasty but I didn't like the desert.
Overall it's a great place to try something you don't normally eat on our daily bases for a cheap menu.
I did take a lot of pics so enjoy!

Ps.: lunch menu goes from 12 - 16
And I'm definitely going back for the 6oz Steak and Half Lobster

Chez Jules is reckoned by some as a bit of a find, with a delightful, candlelit interior, French service, and food with stonkingly good prices, there shouldn't be a lot to dislike.

S.O. and I went for one of our celebratory meals, so whilst supping on prosecco we perused the extensive menu. I had eaten there the week before, choosing the half lobster which was just great served up with french fries. On this occasion, we went for duck confit and smoked salmon to start and both the steaks for main.

I really liked the touch that the complementary charcuterie provided. It seems to me quite civilized to have a languorous meal in sumptuous surroundings, with bread and meat and pickles just a pre-requisite. Our starters arrived looking suitably rustic. I found my salmon to be cut quite thickly, and though I'm all for big portions it felt somehow less enjoyable. S.O. wasn't impressed with the haphazard traditional plating, and found the flavours fell a bit short of what he expected. I, on the other hand, loved the luscious duck meat that flaked off of the bone.

Our steaks were cooked perfectly. I adored the potato dauphinoise that it came with, and was totally distraught that I couldn't finish it despite my best attempts. All that bread at the beginning clearly did my no favours. Overall, we found our mains to be excellent.

Finally, I felt quite in the mood for some crepes, and asked if rather than coming with ice cream, could I possibly have some chantilly instead? They duly obliged, and I have to say the cream was the only part I liked, as the orange sauce was just too rich for my tastes.

I really like Chez Jules. I can see what all the fuss is about, as the experience is overwhelmingly continental. However, s.o. found it distinctly below par and much prefers his fine dining. I suppose it's a matter of taste, but take it from me, you won't go a wanting.

N.B. Their lunch menu is extraordinarily priced!

Bargain basement French style. The bright and cheery exterior of this little bistro draws you in and a glance at the menu board with it's classic French dishes proves too much to resist. Once inside, the dining area is quite large but also too dark for my liking. Still, it has a nice rustic, casual charm and the service is both friendly and quick. My fish soup was more of a stew and was delightful with the crusty bread. The coq au vin was equally impressive; rich velvety sauce, lovely herb mash and the meat falling off the bone. Considering the quality of the food, it is incredible value for money and highly recommended.

Great steak!. Went to Chez Jules recently with friends and I think we all had steaks. They were delicious, and cooked to perfection. I like rare, and this was ideal - seared, but lots of pink. There was a big bowl of salad first, which was free. I had potatoes dauphinoise with my steak, as I love them and thought that in a French restaurant they must be superb, but I was wrong - they were fine, but I've had better. All in all, a fanatstic-value, gorgeous meal in a lovely atmosphere.

Pierre is back on form. If I'm looking for a quick meal in the centre of town, then Chez Jules always hits the mark. They often do offers, but even the standard prices are exceptional with quality to match. Steak and fries under £10 on a Saturday night? Look out for their fondue nights as well. With the second one opened and established in Cockburn Street, Pierre Le Vicky is most definitely back.

French Feast!. Tucked away in a cellar at the bottom of Hanover Street is a lovely wee restaraunt serving up fresh French cuisine. Though the menu isn't exactly what I would call extensive, there is enough of a choice offered to suit most tastes. Upon being seated our table was quickly furnished with a basket of fresh bread, a bowl of leafy salad and a plate of cold meats and olives all of which were a lovely tasty touch. I started my meal with a delicious bowl of Onion Soup which was piping hot, full of flavour and arrived at the table almost instantly. If you are a fan of onion I highly recommend this dish to start! For my main I selected Le Filet Mignon which I had cooked medium rare. In my experience most chefs will tend to overcook a medium rare into a medium, but at Chez Jules it was the opposite, there was a little too much pink for the faint of heart, fortunately I prefer my steak more on the rare side so it wasn't a problem for me, but heed my warning, ensure you are very clear on how you want your meat prepared! Also included in the meal was a beautifully presented pan of dauphinois potatoes which were just a treat to the tastebuds! By the time we had our main the restaraunt was packed and the nights service underway. Our final dish, a piece of brie and sauce (which doesn't appear on the online menu), took a little longer to arrive than I would normally have liked, but it was easy to see that the place was busy and the staff were doing their best to ensure that everyone was being looked after. The layout of the restaraunt is slightly cramped, it was a bit difficult to get into and out of our seats once the surrounding tables were full, though the red and white check tablecloths, the wax covered wine bottle candlesticks and the piped in accordian music did make one feel as though they could be in a Parisian Bistro. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and constantly could be seen checking on their clients to ensure that everything was to their liking. All in all we had a lovely meal at Chez Jules and have already made plans with some of our French Food loving friends to return.

We wandered into the restaurant and the first thing we noticed was that it was very busy. We were sat near the back of the restaurant in between a few larger tables. It was a traditional style French restaurant; pretty dark, with only a waxy red candle to light us. We were handed the set menu, and as soon as I saw it I couldn’t help but smile. I would happily eat everything.

I came here on Friday evening with a friend and we had booked a table for 6pm.The restaurant was fairly quiet at this time which was nice but did feel a bit strange!

We were shown to our table and brought over some bread olives and salami to have with our drink. The wine i ordered came in a little glass tumbler as opposed to a wine glass which i was aware they did but it did still seem weird drinking wine that way! The food was really good - I had a half lobster and my friend had a steak which she ordered to be Medium but it came a bit on the Rare side (fine for me but not so much for her). For dessert we had a lemon sorbet and a creme brulee which was very good as well. The restaurant started to get very busy fairly quickly and became pretty noisy so we were quite happy once we finished eating to move on somewhere else.

The staff were lovely and polite but did seem distracted at times- like not bringing the dessert menu once we had requested it and we had to request it again and the bill etc but this wasn't down to how busy it was as there seemed to be a lot of staff working - although they weren't very identifiable as they weren't in a uniform or anything. I gave the review a 3.5 because the evening was good enough but it wasn't spectacular - the food was good but the atmosphere was a bit of a non-starter.

Dined here recently and really enjoyed it. We were rather on the late side around 10pm having been at a networking event in 99 Hanover.

Still, it was no issue we were seated by the waitress and settled in. A bottle of prosecco came very reasonable priced and I really enjoyed the olives, pickles, salami, bread and salad. I read a review complaining they no longer give free pate too......seriously???

Anyway, for my starter I went for the frogs legs and snails - 3 of each. Garlicy goodness, I think how that can be best described. I managed to convert my 2 dining partners into being escargot fans which I am taking as a big win.

For main we all went for steak. I had rib-eye and the others went for fillet. I had the bayonaise sauce - wish I had gone garlic butter...hmmmmmmm garlic. We were served with a large dish of dauphoinise which I really liked. The steak was perfectly rare if a little on the thin side. very tasty meat though and well seasoned.

This was my first trip here, it wont be my last!!

Ches Jules comes highly JD Recommended! :)

Amazing to find this French restaurant. Warm welcome and great service. The seafood price is lower than the others in the city centre. Green salad, olives, salami and baguette is free of charge and do not set fixed complimentary tips, varieties of wine and food for your choice. I ordered a seafood platter ( supposed for two person ) I really want to eat all those the food and the waitress already reminded me the portion is big. Finally I finished all but I think it’s really big even for 2 people, it includes the mussels (guess it nearly 3 kegs), oysters, smoked salmon and large prawn.I highly recommend and absolutely return when I visit Edinburgh.

Have been wanting to try this place for ages and it met all my expectations! A really cute bustling place with a great (albeit noisy) atmosphere and excellent food. The house red wine was great, and we indulged in a few of them! I had the steak frites which was such a reasonable price and was really tasty - especially with the garlic butter. Service wasn’t the fastest but the little things they bring you upon sitting down (bread, meats and olives, and salad) meant the wait didn’t feel long at all. A great place that I would really recommend - just make sure to book in advance!

The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. The service was super fast. The food itself was incredible. Before you even get to the parts you order they bring salad, salami, olives and bread to the table. From there the soup, frogs legs and snails were amazing to start. The cassoulet and rabbit for mains were fantastic and so full of flavour. You can see why they have won value for money, we did go a la carte however the lunch menu at £12.90 for 3 courses looked amazing and really generous. We went a la carte for 3 people and it was £95. There was probably enough food for 4 as all portions were so generous, the cassoulet especially was packed with meat.

I was able to get a table very quick before a rush. The atmosphere is extremely loud with chatter and phone ringing nonstop. However, I had no issues with service. I had the lunch 3- courses. I like the French onion soup, the steak and frites were good but too prepper-y, and the chocolate mousse was good! I would recommend going for lunch. Just expect loud atmosphere.

Chez Jules is a French restaurant in Edinburgh, located on Hanover Street. I went there for the first time last week, and I was very positively surprised. The menu is more French than in most French restaurants in France! It's really not common to be able to order escargots, cuisses de grenouilles, lapin en sauce or even pain perdu even in France. The prices are reasonable, the atmosphere a bit loud but lively, and it made lots of memories from France come back to me. When my parents or grand-parents used to prepare escargots sometimes, or when my Dad makes us some lapin à la moutarde. I ordered both of these dishes, I was a bit disappointed with the escargots as I would have prefered the herbs of the sauce fresh (I mean by opposition to cooked) and the portion was quite small, I'd give it a 6/10. But the lapin accompagné de grattin dauphinois was a pure delice, I would have put more lapin than that or replaced the diced bacon by more lapin, but I'd still give it a 10/10. I was looking forward to tasting the pain perdu for dessert, but it was late and the stove already off which gives me another good reason to go back in this little gem of a restaurant :) Thank you @leilarasulkhan for suggesting the place! #FrenchFood #FrenchCuisine #Edinburgh #Scotland

Visited Chez Jules more times that I can count in my 4 years of studying in Edinburgh – the most value-for-money, scrumptious steak and seafood meal you can find for sure! The reviews do not lie here people!!! This place is an absolute must if you're in Edinburgh. If you are a foodie or a French food snob this is the place for you. Lets start with the atmosphere. This place is packed, but if there is a wait, you need to wait. While it might be overwhelming at first, it has a very intimate, yet friendly setting. This is definitely the place where friends get together for a fun dinner without breaking the bank. Not to mention when you are first seated you are brought complimentary bread, olives, and salad! I love when restaurants do things like this because it's a small difference that keeps customers coming back. It really set a nice tone for our experience. Moving onto food. The mussles are WOW. The white wine butter base is phenomenal. I only ordered the starter portion and it was plenty for just me for dinner. Overall the mussles are a 10/10 for me. The french onion soup is a must. I think the caramelize their onions first because there is a very specific sweetness to it for being such a savoury soup. Overall 10/10. Lastly, we ordered fish for the table. We were not expecting it to come served with the head and having to debone it ourselves. BUT it was an experience that we all enjoyed. It was also the best fish we had in edinburgh. Very fresh, flakey, right amount of seasoning. If you're in Edinburgh do yourself a favor and head over to Chez Jules.

They offered olives and salami, it was kind. I liked the frog legs starter, seasoned with garlic, eventhough not salted enough, goes well with slices of baguette. Coq au vin was kind of disappointing, we feel to much the bitter and sour taste of wine. The side gratin dauphinois was good. Ambiance is nice, with lots of French clichés
