We had a fantastic experience here. There so much variety of drinks to choose from, to suit everyone, the table service was fantastic and the interior of the place was great aswell. I tried a 15 year old Dalmore and an Oatmeal pale ale which the both complimented each other. The atmosphere of this place was warming aswell. The staff were quite professional.
Devils advocate is the place for Drinks and cocktails , great pub scene , nice cocktails and great choice of drinks , please check closing hours.located at Advocate close, nice place to spend time and have couple of drinks.
Lovely atmosphere great service only had drinks, but were delish. The person who served us helped us out massively and was so welcoming. Hopefully we will taste the food next time:)
A nice bar/restaurant that's hidden away off the Royal Mile. Great setting and good food, with friendly staff. Service was just a wee bit slow on a few occasions that I've been to eat there, even when it's not completely packed.
Once we entered at the bar we got astonished by the scent of an old whiskey cellar. The dinning atmosphere was romantic and cosy, the dishes were excellent.
Quality of the food: Excellent❗
Service: Very Good ✅
Value for money: Great ✔

Para variar as recomendações do Lonley planet não falham! Não o encontraria pq fica num quelho da royal mile. Aprovadíssimo! 👍👍🏅🏅🔝🔝 Vale mesmo a pena!
An old establishment that became a wonderfully decorated place with more than 200 whiskies, simply a time capsul 100 years back verry neat and clean, great scotish food wonderfull music defenetly awesome cocktails with a well selected wine list,
Staff verry friendly and professional. An unforgettable experience .
Went for dinner with the family. Great atmosphere for drinks, not so great if you actually want to see what you are eating.
The meat and produced were really fresh and tasty. The quality of the ingredients is probably what stood out most. The sauce flavor was pretty subtle and was not that amazing.
We had dishes of pork, beef, lamb, and gnocchi. All recommended.
The place is quite pricey and there seem to be many more places that provide better value for the price.
Went for a girls lunch and cocktails date. I love the feel and look of this place, it feels perfect for a special girls meet up or a couples dinner. Disappointed that there was only one vegetarian main dish on the menu, the positive being that it was delicious. I'd have loved to try the soup of the day, tomato and beetroot, but I wanted to save room for desert.
Both the cocktails we had were wonderful, 'afternoon tea in schiedam' and 'house of advocates' , fruity but not too sugary. Totally perfect.
Service was... Ok. I'm a stickler for service. It was pleasant, but nothing special... And almost let's the special feel of the place down a little.
When I heard the guys at Bon Vivant on Thistle Street in Edinburgh were opening a third restaurant in the old town I knew I had to check it out. Looking up Advocates Close. Unless you were lost, I’m not sure you would ever “stumble across” The Devil’s Advocate. The bar and restaurant is tucked away on Advocate’s Close, just off the Royal Mile, and this location gives it a selective vibe, like you had to be in the know to go there.
The Devil's Advocate is set in a fantastic location in the Old Town and easily accessible from New Town. The decor is industrial and cool. All I was hoping is the food would match the setting. And it absolutely did! My corn fed chicken with Moroccan spices, Harissa and Couscous was exceptionally good. The flavours were perfectly balanced with just the right amount of spice. The chicken was beautifully cooked too. My friend went for the vegetarian option with the arancini with salad and she was highly impressed too, she knows the Edi good good scene pretty well! We chose the caramel and chocolate mousse for dessert which was tasty, indulgent yet light. The cheese board was very good too. We didn't drink so I cannot comment on the beverage side of things but the menu looked good. Service was professional and swift. The only very slight downside to our experience was that the music turned up a few notches over the course of the night which made conversation a bit difficult. Overall, a great experience and I thoroughly recommend it!
Tucked away on Advocates Close, an old Victorian pump house has been transformed into ‘The Devil’s Advocate’. From the same guys behind Bon Vivant, Pep & Fodder and more recently El Cartel, Devil’s Advocate is a bar and kitchen which uses seasonal Scottish produce and aims to provide a modern dining experience. I have been to the bar area for drinks before but had never been to the restaurant for food. On this occasion, I was looking forward to sampling the menu with a friend.
Very quirky place located in Advocate's Close just off Royal Mile. We just stopped here for a drink so can't rate the food. The service was nice and friendly and even though the place was packed they still managed to serve at a good speed. They have a great selection of whisky so I'll be definitely returning soon to try more!
We initially popped in for drinks after a long day of jazz & blues but saw the menu and stayed for dinner. I opted to accompany my gin & tonic with a main of corn fed chicken in North African spices, tabbouleh, rose harissa, pomegranate, pumpkin seeds & mint yogurt. Despite being a busy Sat evening the food arrived promptly and was delicious. The DA has a good atmosphere and attentive service. We all left happy and shall return.
We had an afternoon out in Edinburgh and the pleasure of visiting the Devil's Advocate. This place is truly a hidden gem set in Edinburgh's Old Town (in a new, but award winning building, amongst buildings hundreds years older) and a must if you like a fantastic selection of whiskys, cocktails and outstanding service! Not only is it great for its beverages, but the setting and surrounding buildings lend themselves to an amazing experience in the Old Town of Edinburgh. I hope you also enjoy!
I came here for my birthday and booked in advance. There was 14 of us and we all ordered starters and main courses. I baked myself a blueberry cheesecake as I didn't know if they had desserts.
We had 5 bottles of wines red and white on the table, ordered a mixture of food and the service was quick for a busy bustling evening. The ambience here is super, it's really warm, inviting, relaxed and full of character. My birthday evening was a memorable one and this place really does great food, and their choices of drinks are endless.
Love this hideaway!
This is one of my favourite places to go for an early drink on a Friday night after escaping work! Hidden away down Advocate's Close, just opposite St Giles' Cathedral on the Royal Mile, is the latest addition to Edinburgh's bustling food and drink scene: The Devil's Advocate.
It is by the team from the Bon Vivant of Thistle Street and Stockbridge. Who serve fab food and delectable cocktails in both establishments. The Devils Advocate is in a very atmospheric location and the feeling of intrigue of walking down a misty close is fantastically complemented by the warm and intriguing view through the glass windows.
The building used to be an old pump house and they have retained a lot of the old features keeping it quite industrial and putting in a mezzanine floor - great for people watching! It manages to be spacious but snug at the same time and though the menu is small you can still find some great options and a super burger. The cocktails were great and of the same quality as those served at the Bon V you will be glad to know. If you haven't gone you should put it on your list!
I went here for drinks and loved the cocktail menu. Im not a big drinker so if i drink i like it to be something special and his bar definitely provides that. The cocktails making is a show and the results are art.
Friends i was meeting had eaten there and really enjoyed the food.
I'm keen to go back for dinner and some cocktails soon.
The venue is small and can get busy very quickly. We went in the daytime and had to wait for a table to sit and enjoy our drinks. I would recommend booking if you are a larger group or want food.
Cool bar, laid back atmosphere. Definitely qualifies as a Hidden Gem. We were booked in for dinner with friends and got a cosy booth. We all enjoyed our food, there's a comprehensive drinks/wine list and the portions were generous. Pretty good value for what we had, too.
I came to Devil's Advocate with a friend for a quick drink while in Old Town.
Hidden away down one of Old Town's windy streets it would be hard to find unless you knew where you were going, which made it all the more special.
The restaurant/bar is modern in style but has a rustic edge that allows it to fit in with its location. The ambience is very chilled and the staff helpful without being intrusive.
They have an extensive drinks menu with an impressive range of wines across a wide price range which I appreciated as well as a sample cocktails which where hard to resist.
While, I didn't have any food I took a look at the menu and it looked amazing with dishes that were all classical British/Scottish in route which had all been given an interesting modern twist.
A great find and I will definitely be coming back to give the menu a go.
Ate here with our family of 6. They were able to get us in within 30 minutes. It's a pretty unique bar with a unique location. They have over 300 whiskey/scotch on hand. I tried 3 that were aged in sherry casks. All were pretty good!
We all ordered food and it was delicious! I had the 8oz steak and it was great! The employees are super friendly and service was great! Highly recommend!
Best dining experience I had the entire time I was in Edinburgh. Wonderful, fresh, local ingredients to include the draft list, great service, beautiful rustic setting. I had the Pilot Melba sour, the haddock with chickpeas, and the AMAZING sticky toffee pudding. Not a gimmicky place—just a damn good restaurant.
Great place to have really nice food, including new versions of traditional Scottish dishes. Our bill was around £95 with service charge included for 3 people, and we ordered 1 starter, 1 side, 1 sharing board and 2 mains to share, + some extra bread. It's true that we only drank tap water. The portions were sufficient and we ended up full. Everything was tasty and very well presented. We didn't order dessert as we were full and there was also no more than 3 desserts to choose from the menu, all of them appealing, but not for us in that day. We'll repeat soon, and I think it is a nice place for special ocassions. Recommended.
Amazing place with an abundance of whiskey, food was amazing, staff super friendly and attentive, would highly recommend and return when in Edinburgh again. We had the Scottish road trip whiskey tasting and was amazing.
After not being able to get a table without reservation, we came back the next night with a reservation and were able to try this great place. So far one of our favorites in Edinburgh for both the food and the great whiskey cocktails selections. This place is hidden in a beautiful alley and has both outdoor and inside seating. I would say this is a perfect place to try all the famous Scottish dishes… Haggies and dry aged ribeye were great and toffee pudding was the cream on top! Highly recommended!
Overall, it's a good place, but make sure to make a reservation! The food was decent for a touristy area, but my only concern was that both drinks I received were only half full. Another customer at the table next to us also noticed this.
Decent whisky bar with good selection. Stylish modern place. Had a couple of drams. Staff seemed knowledgeable.
I showed up without a reservation and the hostess kindly made space for me at a table outside (totally doable with the heat Lam spa even on a crisp night). I ordered steak and rocket salad, both were delicious. Definitely glad I visited and will be back.
I loved this place. Down a small lane off the royal mile so it's a great location, just away from the hustle and bustle, we sat on the balcony in a booth with a heater that we controlled!! We all got different food from the menu , 5 of us, and I think that's a good thing. I got haddock with a chickpea curry, delicious. It's a good whiskey bar too with whiskey flights. She Picanha steak and it was excellent, medium rare. Lean! Pricey enough but stay a while enjoy the atmosphere and it's worth it!
We went here for the extensive whisky list and that alone made this restaurant worth it. We enjoyed an evening dinner for 5, and you get what you pay for. It isn’t the cheapest by far, but the quality of the food was amazing.
We enjoyed the Smoked Fish Plate to share, then we all shared other dishes-28 day dry aged RibEye was the bomb with the whisky peppercorn sauce. The lamb was tender and juicy, and the cauliflower wasn’t too spicy, but was tasty! When celebrating or enjoying a good meal is the plan, then visit this gem in Edinburgh.
Second time visiting here after stumbling across it almost 7 years ago. Incredible food with the lamb very tender and flavoursome. Excellent wine list. Had one of the best reds I've had on my previous visit and the one this time was also very good. Also a great whisky list. We had 15 year old single malt to end our meal and it was exceptional
After trying to come one day without reservation and not succeeding, we booked for the next night and this has been our best dinner in our Scottish trip.
Everything was absolutely delicious. The picanha steak in particular was delightful: perfectly done to the point, juicy and tasty. To the fries I ordered the garlic sauce and I must say that was the best one I have ever tried because it tasted like real fresh garlic.
Also it is the place if you wanna try some whiskey because they have over 300 kinds.
The waiting staff was also very friendly and attentive, and the best was that they could answer any type of question straightaway, from the preparation of the food to the flavours of the different whiskeys or cocktails.
A brilliant gastro pub hiding in advocates close, great old fashioned cocktails, amazing whiskey variety and very tasty menu(recommended are pork belly and chicken mains), service was very attentive, atmosphere was great, we sat outside but there are heaters and for me personally it was great because no music was playing and I could enjoy talking to my significant other and the nice buzz in the background.
Enjoyed our meal and scotch tasting. Place is packed so service can be a bit spotty but the staff are kind and do the best with the crowd. Food was delicious
Truly incredible cocktails and stellar food. The atmosphere is relaxed with indoor and outdoor seating as well as bar space. I’d recommend making reservations in advance
Had a really great dinner with family. It was during the week and the restaurant was not too crowded.
The food was divine!
We were a large group - one of our waiters were very helpful and went out of her way to accommodate us. They gave us a little over two hours for our meal (before the next booking) which I feel was a little short.
Great place with a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Food is decent and prices are slightly higher than average. Quite steep on certain alcohol like wine glasses.
However, there is a nice variety of choices on the drinks menu.
Hidden gem tucked into the close. Great drinks and charcuterie was yummy! Attentive and kind service. 🖤
