Oh my, the pies! THE PIEEEES!!! All the stars!
Wonderful friendly place. Found it by accident during our first trip to Scotland and enjoyed it so much we had to return during our second trip. The food was still well cooked and plentiful and the service was excellent. If we have a third trip we’ll be back again.
After 3 years we finally made it back to Mums. Not disappointed. The staff are super friendly and attentive and the food....just yum! I had the Steak and Ale pie followed by Treakle and Date pudding. On a cold winter night it was definitely the perfect comfort food. Hot, tasty and plenty of it!
We are from Hong Kong and this is one of the best restaurants we had in Edinburgh! The food is really nice! We had the haggis, sausages and mash and Balmoral chicken. The sausages were amazing especially the lamb and curry one.
Service was great too, very welcoming!
Must try !
Came here after a windy cold day climbing Arthur’s Seat. Good vibes, lovely service. Ordered the fish pie with mash, and the Mac and cheese. Food was lovely, flavourful and warm. Great cheese went into the Mac and cheese, it was delightfully umami and rich. Great renditions of these classics. Side of chips was crispy, warm and cooked nicely. Veg was bog standard boiled peas and mini carrots, nothing special. A bit pricey for what you get considering Ting Thai is around the corner.
This place lives up to its name - it does serve great comfort food! Tried the haggis tower during my first visit, and veggie sausage and mash which were excellent! Some people might find it a bit 'spicy' from the pepper, but thats what makes it good! The spiciness from the pepper warm up our body - which is perfect for winter!
Went here with my sister for lunch,
I've ordered bangers&mash (sausages: pork&leek, pork&chilli, beef bbq) and cauliflower&cheese mash..it was great and quite tasty, I love the gravy :))
My sister has ordered the shepherds pie, the portion was sooo big..quite tasty though;)
Absolutely brilliant- do yourself a favour and make sure you go here. Staff are fantastic and very friendly, loved the decor and not one negative about the food- just great comfort food as promised.
Second time back to Edinburgh, had to revisit Mums. Engaging, friendly staff still a strong point, as well as the great retro decor including prints on the toilet doors. The hearty full Scottish breakfast definitely hit the 'comfort food' mark. Accompanied by a gingerbread shake- so damn good! Only downside was how filling it was, so there was no room for dessert... First world problems
Ordered the Reese's peanut butter milkshake and Mum's mac and cheese which came with chips on the side. Both were exactly what I needed after a long day; comfort food at its finest! Portions were quite filling and the staff were friendly with a great sense of humor
If you want something tasty, good quality but without all the pomp, then Mum’s is definitely the place to go. They’ve been going strong since I can remember and they’ll be going for a while yet, that’s for sure.
I love this place, the name says everything, it's like being home with a very good mum as cook! The atmosphere from the 60's is cosy, better book because it's not very big. The staff is very nice and the food is sooo good I had the best haggis ever and a massive steak pie, maybe too big. It's cheap, tasty and nice perfect place for a quite night!
the name says it all ^.^ their hamburgers, pies, chickens, sausages, mashes, ciders are really amazing and the prices are reasonable.
btw, the staff was so kind and sweet.
I feels home
Lovely atmosphere here and oh so fun! Food is just yummy tummy fillers and great portion sizes , so definitely value for money. Service is standard, nothing less! But the feel of the place, just home. Yes!
The place is opposite to teviot, and I had visited this place just after my graduation. The evening was perfect and we were around 8-9 people with different culture backgrounds. I had a great time savoring the veggie haggis, as haggis is generally meat and I was a vegetarian. I tried the pumpkin pale ale which was available that night, and that was simply awesome, something which made that night even better. Staff is quite friendly and helpful when deciding on what you want to order.
Awesome, quaint little spot with friendly local staff. Seemed like a family affair, which made it even better! — when I was there, a former employee was dining in with some friends and catching up with the current staff. This is a good sign for a good business to me!
Was served my first real Scottish haggis, which was delicious with the mash — and enjoyed Mum’s Gin as well.
Definitely recommend a drop for some comfort foods!
Went to mums for a pre show meal and have to say I was impressed. Like the name of the restaurant suggests this was just very nice filling food. I had the chicken leak and bacon pie and I can't really fault it. The chips were home made too which is always welcome. The price is reasonable especially for the location. The table we were at was a bit cramped next to another one but apart from that all good. I would recommend this place if you are in a hurry or just extremely hungry.
For our lunch here, we had steak and ale stew, shepherd's pie, mushroom cheesy wellington, beef burger, and 3 different flavors sausages. We love the food, service was good and so is the environment. Keep it up 💪💪
Both times I ordered here, the serving was quick, friendly and the food tasty. Just Like home, suficient portion even for a day long hunger. Great Sheppard's pie. I like the nice cosy atmosphere and the whole experience feels good.
Great food, cosy and warm. Place was packed, even on a Monday night. Fair warnings, servings are huge, but at least the staff took it very good naturedly that a few of us couldn't finish! Also a great soft entry to haggis, nicely stacked up with the neeps and tatties.
Our visit to Edinburgh today, we dropped into Mums Cafe...to try the haggis. It was delicious. Food was well made, very homely. Our host, Neesha was just wonderful, thank you to everyone who worked hard to provide us with a great lunch and the impeccable service was appreciated
We had the haggis (non-vegan) and steak pie and they tasted delicious. Just be prepared to wait for 30-40mm when the store is full, but you can always kill time by heading to the charity and/or grocery stores on the opposite road!
In terms of taste, it was my first time trying haggis and if I were to make a spin-off of it, the bottom layer will still be the mashed potato, second layer which was mashed turnip which I think could replace it with sweet potato, and lastly for the meat (which could be from the liver, stomach or heart of Sheep or Cows) it can possibly be replaced with minced meat such as beef (with some fats for the crunch), onion and some herbs.
For the steak pie, it tasted like how a good beef stew with tomato base should be, and puff pastry topping. one complaint would be there’s too little beef, otherwise it will be perfect.
All in all, we had a good meal 👍
My daughters and I visited for lunch whilst being in Edinburgh for the university open day, and I'm so glad we stumbled across this little gem.
An incredibly warm welcome with friendly, cheerful staff and as for the food...well, it really was great comfort food.
The Steak & Ale stew was beautiful, generously sized portions and cooked to perfection. The dumplings were huge, and I was spoiled for choice with the various mash options.
I really do wish that my home town had a Mum's too...I guess I'll just have to hope my daughter is successful with her application so we can pay a regular visit!
Nothing fancy here, but everything hearty and just delicious. Superb value, the portions were huge for the price you pay. An honest restaurant which does not include a service charge or prompt you for tips but I would happily offer. If you are looking for an unfussy restaurant which serves tasty local food, this is probably the perfect spot. We came in one afternoon and there was >30min wait for a table. We left and came back for dinner around 6pm another day and got a table immediately.
We love this restaurant and we went back twice during our 4 days stay there. Really feel like home cook comfort food, love the haggis and pie.
LOVED IT!! while the food is typical English Fare, the vibe makes it so FUN! Nico (according to him - a bad actor :) ) and Juon ( his lawyer) are clearly enjoying their work and hence the special VIBE. Ordered the Sausage and Mash with Brown Gravy while wifey ordered the pie.....ENJOYED IT! If you are near the Edinburgh Medical School vicinity MUST VISIT!!!
Honestly brilliant. In a 4 day trip to Edinburgh we went twice the food and service was so great. Great home cooked style food served with a smile and joke. Mistakenly left a hat there and they had safely set it aside remembering us. This is a must visit for me.
Last night we had dinner at MUMS. We chose to go there because of some vegetarian/vegan options and we were not disappointed at all. Food was delicious, i absolutely recommend the veg shepherd's pie, i think we might come back there to have it again before we leave Edinburgh. Absolutely stunning. The place and the service are very good as well, the atmosphere is kinda like a 24h US dine from the 50s.
Plus, it is a very cheap place, we got two mains + a dessert and we only paid 33£.
Absolutely recommend!
The lady working here is fantastic. Lovely personality.
Went for the famous pancake stack and combined both bacon and banana option, and man.. that was goood.
Sanitation wasn’t that nice, but also not the worst.
All in all a great place, and I definitely recommend my choice for breakfast.
They mean it when they say comfort food. The food was warm and satisfying ike a great home cooked meal. Got the steak stew and the garlic mushroom mash was to die for.
Our server was super friendly and encouraging too. We showed up and it was packed, but she told us there would be 20min max wait and kept checking on us to let us know it'll be ready soon, we didn't feel forgotten at all.
This place is busy for a reason.
Great little place to enjoy Scottish food! My first time having haggis and I loved it! 🤩 I also had their home-made pork sausages and mash with leek and bacon 😋 I even took the left-over home and eat it the next morning as breakfast with tortilla chips 🌮
During the lunch peak, the service could get pretty hectic but it is worth the wait imo. Lastly, I just like the little touches they do for this restaurant such as postcard, ketchup bottles, and musics ❤️
