I visited this restaurant tonight with 2 friends and had a lovely dinner! The interior of the restaurant is quirky, homely and cozy and all the waiting staff were very friendly. They have a great menu - the theme seemed to be comfort food with plenty of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. I had the chicken korma and rice for my main course which was very tasty and a decent portion size. I am on a gluten free diet and the waiter initially told me that the naan bread was gluten free which I was very excited about however he came back a bit later to tell me that it actually did contain gluten. A tad disappointing but at least he double checked which I appreciated!! My friends had the haggis, neeps and tatties and the macaroni cheese which both looked good and they said they were very tasty. I then got the gluten free carrot cake for dessert which was totally delicious. Not bad value for a good quality restaurant in this area of Edinburgh either! Overall, a very enjoyable dinner in a lovely setting. Will definitely be back!
I went to café nom de plume on my own for dinner (it’s nearly five, so it can be called early-bird dinner a single foodie girl). The café is a little off the city centre, but still has an acceptable and nice location (for me, nice location means quite easy to find it via google map as I’m a map idiot). From the outside, it has quite lovely and idyllic wooden arch. Since Christmas is approaching, the arch has lighting decoration, giving impressive to the passerby. Once entering the café, I noticed that there are only three customers who looked like regular-visit ones. Although neither the only waitress nor the female owner said welcome or hello to me, I didn’t mind it too much. After sitting down, the waitress came to give me menu and just walked away to do her task. The restaurant-like menu has first page of dishes of the day and normal dishes serving everyday coming after that. Although there are only four or give vegetarian and vegan dishes respectively, they all look simple but refresh. I ordered hummus of the day – red chili hummus with warm pitta bread and side salad (5.5 pounds, a little pricy at first glance for me).
It did not take too long to have hummus served. Hummus is served in a small jar, with pieces of pitta bread and side salad on each side on a rectangular plate. The red chili hummus tastes nice and not spicy at all, but I would expect it could have flavor of red chili. In comparison to hummus, I was impressed by its side salad honestly due to its honey mustard dressing. The dressing seems like home-made, and I think it is the best salad dressing I have had in Edinburgh. It tastes not strong and greasy, quite fresh with little sweetness. The pitta bread is so-so, maybe too soft and not warm enough. Personally I love chewy warm pitta bread accompanied with cold hummus in cold weathers because it not only keeps you stomach warm but also enrich the taste of hummus.
Generally, I would recommend café nom de plume for vegetarian friends and nacho lovers. The café actually is more famous for its nachos due to its special cheese topping on the nachos. Maybe next time I will try its main dish to see whether it’s truly on my regular-visit restaurant list. I’ll wait and see.
What a lovely little place. It's like being in a living room very sweet. A great wide ranging menu with a good wine choice too. We had olives to start which were great and then I had the macaroni cheese and it was lovely. Not too rich and not too big a portion. What a lovely place to be discovered.
Only 4.5 as it was so hot, uncomfortably so but nothing that would stop me from coming back.
I actually Check in here quite a bit but never written a review. Cafe Nom De Plume is a very homely and quirky place to go for a meal or even just a coffee and cake. Dogs are welcome which means I can always take my dog. However, as they do not have nappy changing facilities, babies are not allowed. Though that doesn't affect me or much of my family. I recommend visiting if you are up town. Staff are always happy, welcoming and accommodating.
It serves an excellent range of dishes, caters well for vegans and vegetarians, and has a warm and welcoming feel to the place
'After a relatively busy Saturday running all the usual errands, me and the girlfriend fancied grabbing a tasty lunch somewhere. We didn't know what we wanted, trying to discover what type of food we fancied by visualising Edinburgh and all the restaurants. Nothing specific was tickling our fancy - so the perfect place, we found out, would be the quirky restaurant called Nom de Plume at the bottom of Broughton Street. We had passed it a number of times, never going in but consistently announcing that we must try it one day, and we didn't regret it.'
The food was tasty - the BLT bagel was filled with crispy bacon and the side salad was packed full of flavour (the mustard dressing was particularly good). The macaroni cheese was a cheese lovers paradise - plenty of melted cheese upon a well cooked and well seasoned plate of creamy pasta. Simple, but delicious.
In conclusion, 'we thoroughly enjoyed our meal here. I'm often wary of restaurants that have large menus, however Nom de Plume seems to be a compromise to this rule. The dishes they do are simple, but done well. Nothing on the menu is going to knock your socks off, but you're guaranteed to find a tasty dish that will leave you feeling satisfied. It's home cooking at its best - served with a smile within a cosy, quirky ambience. So if you simply don't know what you want for lunch/dinner, head to Nom de Plume, they're bound to have something you want'.

I am feeling so happy for two reasons:
- it's my birthday today
- I've found a wee gem of a place I never knew existed.
My Dad suggested this cafe for my birthday lunch, after visiting with a friend for coffee and smelling the wonders of the kitchen from his seat. I was instantly pleased when we walked through the doors to find a colourful, cosy interior will a cool vibe and warm stove.
I had no idea what I fancied, so luckily the menu was very varied with lots of choice. My Dad and I decided to share olives and garlic bread with cheese to start, and for my main I had HAGGIS nachos. I'm a huge fan of eating haggis in any non-traditional way, so I loved these. The cheese was spread evenly throughout, rather than the usual top layer of cheese with loads of naked nachos underneath! The olives were lovely and plentiful, and the melted mozzarella on the garlic bread was delicious. After such a feast at lunchtime you wouldn't expect to have room for a dessert. Well THINK AGAIN! Banoffee pie is my weakness, and it is my birthday after all. It came doused in cream and was more like a banoffee cheesecake. YUM.
All in all a lovely birthday lunch. The setting was perfect with a relaxed atmosphere and the food was fantastic value. All of the above, plus my Dad's main course - a beef & horseradish sandwich - AND two coffees (which were top notch) came to £26.
SAY WHAT?!
I would highly recommend this place.
I've watched this space go through at least half a dozen incarnations, always gay-friendly, and they've all failed. As Nom de Plume they seem to have hit on a winner.
With two seating areas, front and back, there's usually somewhere to find a seat and it's not uncommon to find a dog lurking - which is far more atmospheric than babies. The food menu is huge, and with a good selection for people with dietary problems, hot and cold drinks to suit any pallet, and you're sure to get some interesting background music.
If you're in this part of town and need a nibble, you'd be hard pressed to find somewhere better.
Had a lovely lunch there today. Very good and service too.
It is a good place to have brunch. I had a lovely time here and the food was quite good.

Today I went for the second time to Cafe Nom De Plume with a entourage of 5 people. We had a very nice time. The food is good, not expensive and it is a great place to meet friends.

I just love to come back here. Preferably alone as well because I could spend hours here, working or enjoying the food. It's lovely and staff is quite friendly as well.
From US: Came here based on other reviews, the place is quirky, but worth the ten minute walk for sure. Staff was friendly and food was great. The brown bread they serve with many dinners is great!
Very pleasant vegetarian lunch. They also have a small selection of interesting German beers.
Wonderful. Great menu with lots of gluten free options. We had awesome chilli and roast aubergine respectively and beautifully delicate gluten free blackcurrant mousse to finish. House wines were very good, staff lovely.
A local friend introduced us to this quaint little cafe/restaurant. A modern take on Scottish and English classics, like haggis and mash or beef mince with Yorkshire pudding, with outstanding execution. Great selection of drinks, with many local brews. Highly recommend! (But, beware of child policy after 8pm...)
I had heard good things about Cafe Nom De Plume and I wasn't disappointed. The staff are kind, attentive and helpful. The atmosphere provides a comfortable "Home-Like" feel and the food was very good. I'll be back soon to try some other menu options!
It's hard to go wrong here as there really is something for everyone, and then some.
I went out with a large group - very mixed. Some carnivorous, others herbivorous - some couldn't eat dairy, some couldn't eat gluten. Others were just damn picky. On top of that we arrived without a reservation during one of the busiest times of the weekend.
Despite this, we were ushered in to wait while the brilliant staff frantically re-arranged tables and plants until there was enough space for us to sit comfortably. Then the poor waitress came along to take our order. After about 20 minutes detailing all of our requirements, she got the chef along and took us through each item on the menu explaining exactly what is in it and how it is prepared. Absolutely stellar service.
Once we'd managed to choose, it was only 5 minutes from ordering that things started arriving on our plates. Even though it was absolutely packed and we had been so specific. And they hadn't cut corners either - all beautifully prepared with ingredients so fresh they were practically still growing.
I'm not 100% sure where the chefs here honed their skills - but it is easily some of the best food to be had in Edinburgh, regardless of who is behind the counter. All rattled off with perfection to a rule that never seems to change. Brilliant every time.
Would I eat here again? You'd have to lock me up to keep me away!
The food here is really good and fresh with big portions and lots of vegetarian options. It is very reasonably priced too. The décor is bright and quirky. The staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed and they even welcome well behaved dogs! I would recommend it.
First visit for lunch today. Quirky decor with relaxed feel. Beef chilli was good as was my wife’s smoked salmon salad. Prices are ok and we will go again. Toilets very small and tired though.
Really lovely staff, great food with lots of options for vegans, veggies and carnivores. Very reasonably priced. We had red and white wine and both were lovely.
