My partner was eying to visit this joint as soon as we landed in Edinburgh.
So obiviously the first place we visited was Oink.
It's a small joint with few tables to seat.
The burger was delicious. :)
The place was quaint but people eat fast so you can wait if you want. The line goes long so fast so if you don’t see a line, run for it! I was expecting to have the chicharon on it but I guess you have to request for it. I don’t know how it works though. I ordered the Oink with Brown bread and BBQ sauce. It was awesome! But would like to have the cracklings though 😉 Aaand you can have it takeaway, it is so easy to eat while walking around!
This is the pork lover's paradise. We headed here after a long walking tour of the city and we're absolutely famished. Their food is out of this world.!
Great spot roast pork rolls. Very limited seating though - be warned. Fairly reasonable prices. Friendly staff. Get there early before they run out of crackling!
The most amazing, delicious pulled pork sandwich with apple sauce and stuffing from @oink_edinburgh This was the ‘piglet’ version but was still big enough to feed me! We just happened to pass by it while walking to the Holyrood Palace and decided to get one for the road - best decision!!
Amazingly flavourful! We had the piglet with sage and onion and apple sauce. Completely blew me away. I don’t think I’ve ever had such a tasty and moist pulled pork sandwich. Can’t wait to go back again. It’s very rare to enter an establishment and be greeted with smiles by all the staff. I love this place!
I promised foreign food fantasies, and started with posts in London, but now we journey to Edinburgh! The beautiful city in Scotland, walking through Edinburgh just made me feel like I was in a huge castle with Gothic buildings everywhere and just an entire feeling of grandeur – but I won’t get carried away as this isn’t a travel blog! So one of our friends in Edinburgh recommended this place and so it was the first stop we made after our 2.5 hour train ride from York (on the way from London). You’ll be hard pressed to find this small place without a line during peak dining times but the line moves fast so don’t be deterred. The window has a huge roasted pig (not suitable for vegetarians..) with small boxes of the delicious, crispy crackling lining the windowsill and the entire tub inside filled with tender, stringy pieces of pulled pork freshly cooked that day. This little eatery definitely warrants a visit if you’re in Edinburgh!
Trust me it’s THE place for the meat lovers. We got the name of the restaurant from a local in Edinburgh and trust me we did not bother that it took us 30 mins (not being a local) to find the place. The display board outside the restaurant is also not clear because of which it took us time to find the place.
The only disappointing part was that there are very few seats to sit and enjoy the food. It takes a lot of time to find a place to sit.
But Food was 5/5
The came across this place on Saturday morning. There was a half eaten pig in the window, so obviously we went inside. It's a small venue and the staff were friendly. We both ordered an oink (medium size pork bun). I had haggis stuff (very tasty) and apple sauce. For some reason my wife got a piece of crackling and I didn't. I had a taste of hers. It was delicious. My sandwich was very good too. The combination was tastey and the meat was soft. If I'm in town again, I'd definitely stop by.

Hidden gem and best pork roasted ever that we found in edinburgh.. really love the pork roasted is so juicy and the best ever taste.. with Denny Setiawan definitely will come back again if we visit uk
Very affordable! The portion was large and the taste was delicious! Went there as a tourist for the first time and tried their haggis as well. It was great! The service was quick. Would go back here next time.
Have always wanted to try their roast hog. Finally got the opportunity. It's always a treat to find a place on ones to do list impromptu! And so went for the basic "oink" without roll as wanted to taste the real McCoy without any distraction. The pork is melt in your mouth moist and the flavours are definitely there albeit subtle. You can always opt for some side sauces like chilli jam, gravy, etc.
The long and short of oink is that it's a pig roast. They roast a whole pig, shred it, and make pulled pork sandwiches with it. The amount they serve is limited to what appears to be 1 pig/day, which is plenty to satisfy many customers. They proudly display a roasted pig by the window, with no apologies. So if you're easily offended by the above, you may not enjoy such tactics. But if you're like me and enjoy feeling like a carnivore and eating a meaty sandwich that is customizable by many different choices in sauces, then come to oink. Just do their take away option, as there is limited seating.
Oink is small inside but their meat servings are big. You can choose between lots of options which is great-I went for the pork hoagie with apple sauce. The bun was a bit dry but the meat was delish. You need to be quick as once the pigs done...it's done!
Well as the name suggests .
If you are craving for anything related to pork. You come to this place . And you will seriously not be disappointed . I had a great time savouring the many items that I could eat .
A great place. food and pork lovers should definitely give this place a try.
Excellent flavoursome bbq pork in a bun.
They do make only one thing but they really know how to do it. Had a small bun with hot sauce and mayo. It was seriously yummy.
Will definitely try more whenever I'm there again.
I had the pig roast on brown bread with haggis and chilli. Odd combination, but it surprisingly worked really well! The pork was so flavourful and juicy, and the crackling was just to die for.
Only wished there was a less messy way to eat it!
Grabbed a bun on my way to the airport one time. It was pretty well priced, and nice and juicy.
I'd definitely grab one again if I happen to pass by when I'm hungry.
I was in the area in April, and even though I had already had a panini for lunch, I spotted it and went "OINK!" I knew I had to have my first Oink roll. I had read about it here after looking into places to eat when we come to Edinburgh, my favourite city, and I decided I wanted to try it on one of my visits. I had the pork with haggis and BBQ sauce, which turned out to be a weird combination, but it was still soooooo amazing! Next time I'll have the stuffing and apple sauce...
It's not a place for vegan and veggies that the first thing I want to make straight. Not even for the faint of heart who will not like to see the what they are about to eat in totality.
Simply put there is a whole pig roasted or cooked in front of you on the display whIle they prepare sandwiches out of it.
As for me this was the thing which attracted me . This is the thing that set them apart. It's thier USP.
And the shredded meat sandwich they make from it is also fabulous . Seating is cramped do just take away and easy while roaming around the beautiful streets of Edinburgh. Enjoy
Writing this in retrospect from my trip to Edinburgh in July this summer .
On buzzfeed recommendation was listed on my food diary for a certain try and it definitely did not disappoint.
On the way to Holyrood palace, this small joint is located on the royal mile and certainly well sign posted .
They serve of the best hog roasts with a variety of toppings . The crackling is excellent and there is a good choice of drinks too.
Small place and gets filled up quite rapidly . Best is to buy one and walk along the mile as you explore the city .
So being an ex veggie I had avoided this place due to the big pig in the window. Even though I am now a meat eater, I still had a twinge of guilt every time I walked past. Today was the day when I told that guilt to just get lost and let me enjoy a delicious roll. I'm so glad I eventually let the meat eating side of me wine. Oink certainly lives up to the hype. I went for the Oink with haggis. I ended up avoiding the relish, as I am a picky one and wasn't sure what to expect from them. The meat itself was just wonderful. There is always a worry that pork will be a quite dry but not with Oink. There is a larger option available but personally 'The Oink' was big enough for me. Go along and let your meat eating side win!
Urban Traveller
First time at Oink and I was very impressed! The meat is tender and juicy and the apple relish that I got was very tasty! I heard this place is great but I was really surprised with the quality of meat. Big portion and enough for a tasty quick lunch. I will be back to try the other relish - chilli cheese. Get down here if you haven't been yet! Everyone should get a taste of the pig heaven!
If you love pulled pork and you are looking for a quick bite, Oink is the place for you!
Oink is somewhat of an institution in Edinburgh. I read about it all the time on blogs and food articles for Edinburgh. But, after 11 months of living here, I only just managed to sample their delights! It is primarily a takeaway restaurant, however there are a couple of seats inside. There are 3 different sizes of roll to choose from. The middle size is quite big, I couldn't finish it all. Once you have chosen your roll you can pick to add haggis or sage and onion to your pulled pork roll, as well as a sauce. Personally, I would recommend haggis and apple sauce, as it was delicious! The pork itself is very succulent and extremely tasty.
The prices here are great for the portion size. Make sure Oink is the place you head to for your pulled pork fix!
Pulled pork and nothing but pulled pork. Oink on Victoria Street is a hole in the wall with no decor, little charm, and even less seating. That said, if you like slow-roasted hog, you need to get to Oink. The menu is simple. You have three choices, a children's size, the Oink, and the Grunter, served on either a brown or white bread roll. You have a choice of toppings and sauces, again limited. The folks at Oink know pork; if you like pork, get to know Oink.
Pork pork and more pork! But what happens to the crackling?! Here you'll get the most hearty filling roast pork bun with only a touch of dressing and sauces. A thrifty £5 with change gets you the gunther, but a more manageable Oink size bun can be down with relative comfort. Comfort food in winter.
I'm not a pork fan. I don't love bacon (unless it's in burgers), I hate pork sausages and I avoid pork inn fajitas or burritos or anything!
The reason I came in here is because I was starved and it was the only restaurant around that I had read about on Zomato and had good reviews. All I have to say is that ever since, I am a pork fan. I got the 160g meat pulled pork bun but I'll probably go for 250g the next time round.
Oink rolls are amazing! A nice soft brown roll filled with juicy pork meat, crunchy pork skin and then sweet apple sauce is just delicious. Definitely recommend!
One of the Best Things You Can Put In Your Mouth. We loved Oink! We were visiting from Oregon and this was one of the best meals we had on our vacation. We got our sandwiches with the classic toppings of onion/sage and applesauce. Don't pass up the skin. It adds great flavor and a nice crunch. Anyone who visits Edinburgh and doesn't get an Oink sandwich is really missing out on something special.
Great surprise. I am from North Carolina. I love pork and BBQ. This place was a pleasant surprise and quite a treat. The price was very reasonable and the sizes generous. Forget all of the other overpriced places on the street, try this one first. No bling-
bling here, just good food.
Porky Pleasure. Pulled pork on a roll. What could be simpler ? No question about traceability here as the roasted pig is in the front window ! With a choice of haggis, apple or chilli to complement the meat, the end result is sublime. Highly recommended.
A hog roast roll has practically become a must eat in Edinburgh and for good reason...it's bloody delicious. The roll consists of meltingly tender pork (basically pulled pork) from a slow roasted whole pig sandwiched in a soft and chewy white roll. Add crackling and chilli relish (you can choose between that, haggis, sage & onion stuffing, cheese sauce or apple sauce) and a liberal dousing of pepper and you have the perfect quick and cheap (£3.95 for the regular size) lunch. ...really good, a bit of crunchy crackling to add a crisp bite and texture to some great moist juicy pork, and a salty smear of haggis to add another dimension to the sandwich. Its time like this that one regrets living thousands of miles away in another country. Whatever anyone says, Britain has some good simple food, this is healthy fast food at its best.
So this is a bit of a wild card post, but I could not resist championing the Best Buns Ever that I was lucky enough to grab on a weekend trip to Edinburgh… Hopefully there might be a few people who are planning on going up before the end of August to rub shoulders with thespians galore. DO NOT FORGET – to get yourself an oink bun. It’s very simple – a whole pig, salted, roasted, shredded. A bun, some sauce, some stuffing. There is a great story to this joint too, so check out the website.
Sir And Mlady Dine Out
+4.5
The name here basically says it all. The whole pig that is delivered fresh each day and proudly displayed in the widow attracts crowds of people to stare, drool a bit and eat. As the day unfolds the pig gradually gets consumed until there are just scraps left.
What better way to get customers in the door than a whole roasted pig on the window? That's exactly what Oink, a little shop on the similarly-little Victoria St, does to get you to try their Scottish hog roll. Not that the gourmet pig could've passed by a
Craving for Oink! The tastiest that I love the most is the crunchy part of the pork skin. Ask for the extra if it's available. The sauce is also so good!
I am not a massive fun of pulled pork buns but when I had some friends visiting and one of them really felt like having one of their sandwiches I must admit I was happily surprised. Very tasty and good value for your money. Perfect to eat on the go if you are around the area.
I am mad about pulled pork. I loved their offerings. I got the adult portion and it was too big for me, and i like to think i can fit in my food. The price for what i got felt like a bargain. That was me done, no need for dinner later.
I didn't get any crackling so feel disappointed about that but that was an after feeling as i was unawares i was meant to get it so at the time of eating I was so happy with the soft bread. Tasty stuffing, which may have been my favourite part, loads of tender meat. I appreciated that it wasn't too saucy.
Ill be back that's for sure. Its a great filling meal on the go.
See my august post titled : A couple of Coffee Joints in Edinburgh
Simple, cheap and ridiculously filling hog roast sandwiches. Choose your portion size (Piglet, Oink or Grunter - £3-5), your roll, and your sauce (sage & onion, apple sauce, cheese sauce, chilli relish or haggis and topped with crispy crackling). You'll be served within a couple of minutes, but don't rush off - you can't eat that thing on the go. It is seriously messy business, but it's worth it. Pop over to the Bow Bar for great beers and whiskey afterwards to wash it all down.
A much vaunted and immensely popular dining experience in Edinburgh, Oink packs a pork-filled punch down your gullet and forces you to remember every last bite of their juicy, own-reared pigs delectable meat. Through intelligent usage of social media they have ingrained themselves in the cornices of the minds of followers on Twitter and the thoughts of pork eventually creep out, leaving a person with a strong yearning for the glorious meat.
With queues that can snake out the door and down the street, the original location of Oink in Edinburgh can be extremely busy. Just as well they have assiduous staff who cope remarkably well when faced with a deluge of pork craving loons desperate to taste a flake of the meat.
The prices are a bit steep, especially for what is a one course lunch, but the quality of food is of a high level. Everyone that goes here does not leave with a bad word to say against Oink, and instead they rave about the standard of pork they have just devoured.
A thoroughly recommended experience for eating in Edinburgh and one which lives up to the hype.
This is the signature Oink location in Edinburgh, and it is also the well-established hog that rules the pigpen that encompasses all of Edinburgh's hogroast joints that seem to be popping up everywhere. Oink is simple and fabulous for meat-eaters. For the vegetarians out there, it's probably best to avoid Oink though as they have such a limited menu that they hardly have any vegetarian options that would make a good lunch. Oink does one thing and it does it well, so go for the hogroast and don't leave it too late in the day, because once they sell out they're done for the day! It is deliciousness incarnate, and prices are extremely reasonable! Note that this location only has a few tiny tables, so plan to take your hogroast to go, hover around for a table, or visit their Cannongate location instead since it's quieter and has much more seating.
It's been 8 years since we went to Oink and I am STILL thinking of this place. I've recommended it to everyone traveling to Edinburgh. I check in on it on Google maps every now and again to make sure they're still open and serving their delicious pork sandwiches. We went multiple times to eat there during our stay. Absolutely highly recommend if you're in Edinburgh.
Great quick bite, meat is perfectly cooked, every component of the sandwich is prepared well and makes sense. Good options, the place is quite small so it gets crowded fast, but the queue moved along quickly. Affordable, filling, tasty, all that you need in midst of the sightseeing.
Yummie, if you like pork it's delicious! Had a "piglet" (the smallest bun) and it was enough to replenish my body in order to explore the streets of Edinburgh again.
An amazing hog roast bap - got mine with mustard mayo and also added crackling (recommended). The meat was sooo juicy and flavourful. Worth the wait and the queue moves pretty quickly!
The equivalent of Yorks - ‘Yorkshire Pudding Wrap’. ‘Oink’ Serves pulled pork in a bap. Great service. Great food and reasonably priced. I would recommend going for the medium as the small is maybe just a little too small, unless this is a sales tactic. Oink is located on Victoria street. A very popular street that draws a lot of attention. Oink can therefor get busy, hence I would recommend going at a time not so busy. Definitely worth it for a light lunch bite. Delicious too. 🐖
Close at 5, went there nearly 4pm, only take away is allowed.
The meat was nice paired with apple sauce that gives a little sour taste to the oily dish. But Mostly lean pork which is good.
We obviously had to try this famous chain… you get the most meat with the box and can pick sides. Overall good place to try but nothing too crazy to come back for.
Nice shop for pork sandwiches.
Different sauces to select.
If you are early enough you get a piece of the pork crust.
Oink was a great place to stop after a long morning of walking. Large portions of delicious food at a reasonable price. Next time I eat here I’ll ask for more BBQ and mustard!
Great value for meals
Large portions
Plenty of seating
Friendly staff
Plenty of drink options
The haggis was a great side option to put on the sand which and the pork was very juicy. Not much fat to worry about chopped in either. The portions are so huge that my wife and I split the large and didn’t finish it all.
The smell coming out of the restaurant instantly attracted my appetite. The pulled pork was excellent and the sage stuffing was just as wonderful. Definitely the perfect quick bite. Only knocking a star since we tried to dine inside on the counters but were told we couldn’t do so with no reasoning given. Either way, can’t deny the food was great!
The place was fun and beautiful inside, the staff is very polite and helpfull, they were super busy and It was hot inside, so leave a tip guys. The buns are big and the food is super tasty.
I had an incredibly good sandwich here. Just thinking about it still makes my mouth water.
Try it yourself if you are nearby.
Stumbled upon this place and tried their bowl, didnt disappoint! Loved their meat and pork skin!
Oink was a great stop after a long morning of sightseeing. The pulled pork sandwich hit the spot. The inside is quite small so you might have to take your sandwich on the go, but the staff was friendly and had quick service. My only complaint is wanting more BBQ sauce but because it was so busy I didn’t go up and ask for more, although I’m sure they would have given me some. Definitely a great stop.
Probably the best pork sandwich I've ever tried!, Good product and you can choose the best combination ever, apple sauce, homemade chilli cheese, haggis,...
Small place to est there but tale away is the best option!
Love this shop its very tiny and can get very busy, but the food is excellent the pork is beautiful juicy and soft with haggis and apple sauce on a soft white bun. Have to visit every time I am in Edinburgh ( some times twice!) Staff are really friendly as well. Recommend you try, found this place out on YouTube of all places and gave it a go, glad I did.
The food is food, we got a standard sandwich and a gluten-free hog in a box. The staff is super friendly.
Delicious pork rolls. Tiny location so the quarters are cramped. Would suggest having one person take the order to avoid the teeming masses of tourists (I am they…), but it is definitely worth it.
