Lovely restaurant in Leith famous for its seafood. I opted for moules and was not disappointed! The seafood platters looked amazing, but a bit pricier!

Our first seafood platter has set the bar incredibly high. The fresh seafood was cooked perfectly and was incredibly filling. We can't find a fault in this meal and already have plans to return very soon!. Ahoy there matey!. In all our years of living in Leith we’ve never been to The Ship on the Shore. As we sit here thinking up more pirate phrases we’re wondering why it’s taken us so long.

Well worth a visit to Leith for this highly professional establishment. Food cooked with integrity using freshest produce; exemplary staff who can cope under tremendous pressure, yet, always friendly and professional. Special mention is Clare who was run off her feet, but always with a smile.
Lunched here Dec 29th and shall be back, all the way from Brisbane, Australia.

Was a huge huge fan of the Ship, we were always keen to get ourselves back for a leisurely weekend lunch. Always plenty to choose from, and there has been some pretty special dishes to choose from. The fish and chips is a mammoth but tasty dish, and the mussels have a really nice broth. The surf and turf sandwich is my favourite 'go to dish' - but last time I was really let down. The sandwich was so packed full of lettuce and tomato that I had to deconstruct the already pretty messy sandwich and try and piece it back together. Lost it's sparkle a bit recently -hoping my sandwich is back to it's usual high standard next time

The area around The Shore in Leith is magical and a jewel in the crown is The Ship on the Shore. A fabulous place for a celebration (as its not cheap) or a special occasion. Its one of the best restaurants to go for seafood and you'll be in awe at the sight of their seafood platters. The scallops were succulent and soft and melted in your mouth like butter, the abundant seafood platter was filled with lobster, mussels, oysters, clams, razorclams, langoustines, prawns .....Two gripes - why is all the seafood on the seafood platter served cold?? there are some seafood that is best served warm/hot and you need to make sure the mussels are cleaned well - a wee bit gritty. But that said, the champagne was flowing and the seafood got demolished!

Nice food, decent service. Brilliant showing with the salmon I had, so fresh! I enjoyed the other people in my family's dishes as well (at least what I tried of them) The decor is refreshing and different, however I didn't love the service which was composed of about 4 different waiter taking orders handing out checks etc. I would recommend for good seafood, but only to someone not in a rush...

Best seafood restaurant in Edinburg right now. Just the best right now, great staff great food and a lovely dinning room. Fishers in the city and this place are head and shoulders above the rest in terms of Scottish seafood. The location and staff make this a real treat.

A fishy feast. Review written June 2010

The Ship is a fish and seafood restaurant where you can enjoy fine food, wine and champagne in a buzzy, unbuttoned ambience. Chalkboards suggest classic combos such as oysters with Guinness or champagne, 'twists' such as half a dozen oyster shots or the 'spectacular' such as the fruits de mer royale. There is also a bar menu and daily specials.
We chose to eat from the dinner menu and Mr Bite began with The Ship's seafood chowder (£7.95). A very hearty affair with no complaint regarding the quantity of fish; it was choc- full of mussels, clams, prawns, langoustine and haddock. Intensity of flavour increased the deeper into the bowl you delved. I had grilled queen scallops with tarragon and lemon butter (£6.95). The bivalves were really sweet, the sauce rich and tangy and a sprightly leaf salad contained hot, peppery samphire flowers and flash fried wild garlic leaves. Stunning.

For main course Mr Bite chose battered monkfish tails with wild garlic salad and masala curry sauce (£16.50) and I had pan-fried halibut with a Thai shellfish broth (£17.50). On our last visit to The Ship Mr Bite had declared the fish curry the best he had ever tasted and he wasn't disappointed this evening. His food was presented beautifully with the sauce on the side and salad in a separate bowl. He described the monkfish as luscious, and commented on the exciting battle of flavours between each component on the plate. My halibut was really meaty and stood up the Thai flavours and chilli heat admirably. The broth contained noodles, clams, mussels, courgettes, carrots, green and red peppers and pak choi; the flavours danced on the palate.

We couldn't manage dessert but The Ship always has a 'sweetie' dessert and today it was Cadbury flake cheesecake. There were also classics like crème brulee and seasonal sweets such as rhubarb jelly with strawberries and cream.

The Ship doesn't bang on about provenance and seasonality but it clearly ticks these boxes. In our book, it is one of the finest restaurants in Edinburgh and we look forward to our next trip.

The Ship on the Shore is a nice brasserie style located on the Water of Leith. Nice atmosphere, maritime decor, French influence, expect a seafood in your face menu

We’re so close to the sea that you would expect good seafood in Edinburgh. And you can certainly get it, from fancy restaurants in town to the pubs on the shore of Leith, seafood and fish are ubiquitous. Last weekend I took a leisurely walk down to Leith and visited three of the bar-cum-restaurants down there, finally eating in the King’s Wark.

The Shore, The Ship and The King’s Wark. So went our Saturday Leith pub crawl. These are restaurants as much as they are pubs, so they have a somewhat different feel from pubs in town that serve food.

The Ship does a similar thing to Th Shore, but posher. It’s more spacious, has even more gleaming wood and offers a Fruit de Mer Royal @ £75 which I will have to come back for at some special occasion (spend £110 and you get a bottle of house bubbly too). With the same impeccable service as the Shore, the Ship was more formal and expensive. A good place a the post-lunch aperitif (judging from the people around us), The Ship offers an impressive menu and an oyster shot on the drinks menu, should you need a mid-afternoon protein pick-me-up.

Everything tasted high quality. Wife got a ribeye, I got fish and chips, and we shared muscles. The atmosphere was very nostalgic. The Old Fashioned I ordered was good. I would have liked the option for some sauce of some kind with the fish and chips, but the fish was perfectly cooked.

Popped in for a late lunch and what a find. Absolutely fantastic food. The Oysters and seafood linguine were so good. Highly recommend this place if you are in the area

Great place for sea food. Huge portion for the fish and chips. Was bit of a slow service, but the food did all the justice. A bit pricey in comparison to other sea food restaurants in town. Convenient location and friendly staff.

Seafood is good, but I personally prefer Fishers . We had the mussels, oyster pakora, smoked seafood platter and dessert ( love boat ). Nothing to complain about, the service was very good and the whiskeys ( lagavulin, Ardbeg, caol ila) that we tried were reasonably priced.

The food was nice, I had the mussels but wasn't a fan of the sauce. My mum had the steak sandwich which she found to be fatty and my daughter had the mixed cold platter which was tasty and different. Hard to get parked so public transport is the better option.

Great seafood restaurant. We had the fruits de mer and the size, the quality and the flavour of all fish and shell fish was just amazing. I would highly recommend anyone who loves seafood to stop and have dinner or lunch here. Tip: order the sticky toffee for desert while you are here!

For our last meal on the shore (three restaurants over a weekend attended) we booked into the Ship on the Shore. You need to book as it was very busy. Loads of fish but it's a fish restaurant. Our waiter was great and really helpful, the food was fantastic. The best I've had in a long time. Will return if we are in the area again.

Had a class time with family here, a very relaxed atmosphere with lots of interesting themed decorations. As expected, the menu is seafood heavy with lots of different kinds of fish and shellfish, very fresh and staff were more than happy to accommodate certain fish allergies in our party. The brown crab and the fruits de mer platter were amazing and the smokehouse platter is also unreal, highly recommend. Will definitely go back.

Good atmosphere and drinks. Haven't tried the food but we've been here a few times now and it's always a good time. Outside is great for people watching and meeting fellow travelers. Tonight we met a group of people from Norway and chatted with them a bit. The happy chappy ale is delicious for beer drinkers. Wife loves the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
