Staff were polite and found us a seat very quickly. Food was delicious and portions great size - we couldn’t finish our meals but they allowed us to take it home in a container. Would recommend this restaurant.

As the title says, this was quite simply the nicest curry we have ever had.

Even the poppadums were by far the nicest I’ve ever had!

Chicken pakoras were to die for, the pilau rice so fluffy and tasty, and the mains were absolutely fantastic. I’m normally a Balti/Bhuna/Rogan kind of guy but opted for their Nepalese Lamb Khutta dish which was delicious- the lamb just fell off the bone and was perfectly cooked and the sauce was fantastic.

Fully recommend this place 100%

This place is situated in the heart of the city , the ambiance was just perfect, you feel like sitting inside a hut. Finally the food, we ordered Piro Kukhura as a starter, Bhot Ko Chelu, Poleko Bhale Kukhura and some naans. The food was very much as per expectations.

My ratings:
Food: 5/5
Service: 5/5
Ambiance: 5/5
Price: 4.5/5 (regular normal prices)

I would definitely like to visit again.

Saw this place while heading to Princess Street. Small place but was full on a Sunday evening.

Got a table after 2 Minutes of waiting.

Ambience is nothing great, small place, but full utilisation of the place.

Staff was friendly and had smiling faces. Polite.

Good was good and not 🌶.

I found this place expensive compared to most other restaurants I dine at in Edinburgh.

Been to this place twice with colleagues and on both occasions, we've absolutely loved the food. I've been to several other Indian restaurants in the city but found the food lacking in one aspect or the other but Gurkha stands out - the presentation, the taste, the spice levels in their dishes(for people coming from India as well as the locals) , and the service are all spot on!!

We started with a mix of veg and non-veg starters - aloo tareko, veg pakoras and both veg/non veg momos(dumplings). Dumplings take a while to be prepared and it's good that they've mentioned this on the menu so anyone who's in a hurry shouldn't be ordering it. Momos are served with their special in-house garlic dip which tasted awesome and we ended up asking for 4-5 servings of just the dip itself. Moving on to the main course, we ordered saag aloo, kadhai paneer, daal makhani and a chicken dish. As for breads, methi parantha is a must try here. The service was pretty good and all the dishes tasted great. All in all, we left very happy and thoroughly satisfied with our experience both the times. Highly recommended!!

It was almost 3 in the noon and our stomachs were rumbling then we found this place open(almost closing time). Now the food,we ordered chicken tikka and piro khukra (chicken)for starters and the piro khukra was so different n yes it was delicious. And for main course as we were very hungry we just ordered biryani. The chicken biryani was good but the lamb biryani was excellent for me.So overall it is a good place to have a stomach filling food and quite tasty too. Will definitely visit again :)

The Gurkha Cafe - Edinburgh
23/01/2015

A new year usually means setting yourself goals and The Food Club is no exception. We decided to scale a Mountain of Nepalese cuisine at the Gurkha Café. The whole group assembled, some slower than others…. You tell him to be ready by a certain time and he’s standing naked ironing at the window… but I digress. We were seated in the centre of the well decorated restaurant and that set us up for a good meal.

As is tradition, a selection of beverage was ordered including, Gurkha Beer, Cobra & Champagne, because we celebrate every occasion.

Before the starters we got a selection of poppadum’s and spiced onions served with a variety of sauces. Although very tasty… the onions were a wee bit spicy and caused the sweats immediately. The sauces certainly helped cool the pallet the down although the onions were too good not to have again.

Service was slow but it was a busy Friday night so that can be forgiven. Between the 9 of us a selection of starters was ordered. This included, tender chicken pakora, Mo:Mo, Aloo Tareko, Mix Starter, King Prawn Lasuni and Piro Kukhura. All the starters were well spiced and devoured pretty quick. The Mo:Mo does take some time which is stated but these steamed dumplings were filled with delight.

Main courses and again the service was slow but due to size of the meal a longer break was maybe a blessing in disguise. Like the starters we got a selection. Shaslik, Chilli Garlic Fish, Sheekh Kebab, Prawn Madras & Poleko Bhale Kukhura. The mains were very filling but this is to be expected for the cuisine and no complaints were coming from our end. Thankfully due to me carrying an extending fork I was able to stealthily steal a bite from each plate. I personally had Lamb Poleko Bhale Kukhura and this was tender, well spiced and a joy to eat. Everyone was happy with their choices. There were a few mix ups with orders but this was resolved with minimal disruption. We were a bit spoiled for choice with their abundance of Rice and Naan options. The staff served up 2 of each which was greatly appreciated and allowed to sink our teeth into something different. I enjoyed the coconut and pineapple rice and the apricot naan. Nothing beats tearing it with your hands and scooping up the remains on the plate…. Never be ashamed to lick the plate…. even in public.

No matter what the circumstances, Dessert is a must. Full to the brim and nearing the peak of our Everest ascent, the waiter took down our order. Again we ordered a selection of puds, Gajar ko Halwa, Chocolate Brownie and Galab Jamun. Unfortunately about 10 minutes after ordering, we were advised there were not enough Brownies for what we ordered so we decided to end the meal. However due to the other starters being prepared we were served with the remainder. This was not included on our bill as a good will gesture and we thank the Gurkha Café for this. The Galab Jamun was soft, sticky and an all round winner. The Brownie that we did was shared out and got thumbs up. Special praise is reserved for the Gajar Ko Halwa. A traditional Nepalese desert made from crushed carrots, milk & cardamom. Might not sound the bees knees but I highly recommend it.

All in all The Food Club had a great time and would recommend this wee gem for a treat. Valentine’s Day is coming up, what better way to say ‘I love you’ than Spiced Onions, a Big Curry and crushed carrots…. You’re on to a winner.

Well priced, great location and friendly warm staff.

Excellent food. The lamb khutta was presented wonderfully and the taste was delicious. The house red wine (a Sauvignon) was good. Service was a little discombobulated. We had two hostesses who were new and did not know the menu well enough to help us with a recommendation. The waiter mixed up the spicy levels on our meals (mine was too sedate for my tastes). Finally, we sat unattended after the meal for quite a while before we could hail a server for the check. None of this should dissuade the diner, however. The excellence of the taste is worth the effort.

Nice Nepalese Restaurant. We had to wait a little bevor getting a table - so reservations might make sense. Food was good, side dishes like Nand or rice have to be ordered extra. Price for the meal was ok for mit-town Edinburgh.

A fantastic, atmospheric Nepalese restaurant, with an interesting menu of well-cooked, traditional dishes. The staff are friendly and the restaurant is well-spaced, but cosy, being well decorated and inviting. Highly recommended for a great meal!

A really lovely meal, it came out really fast and was super delicious, I was really blown away by the Mo:Mo’s and how nice the Naan was. The beer named Everest was chilled and crisp. Also the staff were super friendly and even cracked a few jokes with me as I sat alone, but the bag was my company.

The Gurka Cafe & Restaurant is an excellent Nepalese restaurant offering a good range of special dishes and traditional Indian dishes. The service is excellent - we were initially seated close to the main door which was a bit draughty and it was no bother to be moved to another table. There is a good choice of beers and wines to accompany the meals. My group of four were all delighted with our choice - so much so that we took unfinished food home in "doggy bags". There are interesting works of art throughout - even on the stairs to the toilets. The music was traditional and not at an intrusive volume.

Very much enjoyed this place. We had outdoor seating, which accommodated 2 tables. I thought it was a tiny place but inside it's pretty large and has alot of seating! I felt like we had great table service and the food was excellent. We ordered a #3 and #4 under the Nepalese non-vegetarian section. We also ordered the Everest beer which was great.

Tucked at the end of busy old town street, however what a place! It wasn't busy when we went a lunch time so we was the only customers there. Food is absolutely phenomenal. So so fresh, meat it succulent, vegetables are so fresh! I can't express how good quality the food was, amazing!! Menu is not big, but you'll find all traditional popular dishes and they also do selection of vegetarian dishes. If we went at dinner time i think the experience would've been even better, but the food quality i will remember and miss when I go back to England!!

Food was amazing, not too spicy which I prefer with great flavour. The chicken was juicy, naan went perfectly with the curry. Service from the gents was alright, the lady had a much better approach but the food was amazing regardless

Wonderful food. Excellent portions and reasonably priced. However the service was slow and our meal didn't arrive for 50 minutes. This wasn't helped by one of our dishes having to be made again (we're not sure what happened but according to the waiter something went wrong in the kitchen). It was a shame as this took the edge off the meal after what had been long day for us. However I would certainly return for the quality of food.

Fantastic food! Food quality and taste 10/10. It took some time to sit down and then after ordering, but I suppose great food takes some time to prepare. I highly recommend. We tried 5 different main dishes, plus 2 naans. All were served hot and fresh. Tasty 😋
