We went for lunch with another couple yesterday. I was the last to arrive and was struck by how noisy the upstairs was. The food was quite good despite the fact that my husband's hake was stone cold. My main gripe was the unbearable noise which made it impossible to hold a normal conversation. We'll never go there for lunch again.

If you want a bit of France in Scotland - there is no better pace to head to than Edinburgh's West End. L'eScargot Blanc is a lovely wee restaurant that serves authentic French food in a very French setting. All the waiters and waitresses speak French too and I enjoy practicing a bit of my elementary french with them. I've eaten here twice now and both times the food was has been exceptional, fuss-free and very good value. The first time I chose the fish manic course which was beautiful - the sauce they served it in and the bread was also very good. My friend went for the omelette - I believe it was a very good omelette. We ordered the sorbet for dessert which was very good. The second time round I ordered the plat du jour which was meat balls ( venison) in a wonderful tomatoey sauce. Half our group ordered it - it was freshly cooked and served like your your mum would at home in a great big copper pan. For dessert, most of went for the dessert of the day which baked apple served with berry sauce, almonds and creme fraiche - very unusual and not my usual choice of dessert but very good! If you book their pre-theatre menu, you can get two courses for less than £15 - incredible value I think. Well worth a visit.

Lovely set lunch menu. Vibrant atmosphere a buzz if you like. The French staff add to the authentic design decor and of course the food. Love to see cheeses left out of the fridge as if to give a two finger salute to all those stupid European rules. Try this place if you like French food.

User-friendly French food here. Menu changes seasonally. I started with the butternut soup, which had a really nice balance of flavors. Next came the parmesan risotto stuffed into a miniature pumpkin (complete with a very smart hat) - an interesting and well-done combination of flavors and textures. The cheese plate was a bit disappointing - in anticipation I had imagined up something much more impressive than what came.

I will have fond memories of that salted carmel creme brûlée for a long, long time.

Nice French restaurant with a wine bar downstairs. Amazing selection of wines and a great value menu pre 1845 - where you can get 2 courses for £15. The snails are a must. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. Would recommend a visit.

Discovered this place by coincidence but fell in love with it immediately. They offer a 2-course lunch meal deal for £12.90 which I would be easily happy to pay double for. They have a selection of impressive dishes and a few daily specials which you will be guided through when you are seated. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. I think she was French and had a very sweet accent - could hear others talking French, so it's a real thing, french dishes cooked by a French chef. The place is very cozy, with some quiet french music in the background. Food was very well presented and tested devine. I was overwhelmingly impressed and will definitely be coming back next time I am around to taste the other dishes.

I stopped at random while walking around... It was the wine racks and the small library that caught my eye. Good selection of wines by the glass... I did not try the restaurant upstairs, I stayed for a quick bite in the bar area downstairs... Fresh Scottish oysters and a cheese plate. Delicious...
