When we first arrived in Edinburgh a couple of days ago I looked on Zomato and was staggered at the number of places getting 4 and above. Either you lot up here are easily pleased, or there's an abundance of top nosh that we don't get in the colonies. And then somewhere like this gets 3.2 - what the? The food was awesome, the beer good and the service and atmosphere excellent. Easily the best place we ate the whole time we were in town and a fitting final meal.
I KEEP THINKING The Black Fox is new every time I walk past it and that I must visit. Having opened towards the end of last summer, it can’t exactly be classed as new, but after a recommendation from my mate and local resident, James, it was time to sample the merchandise for myself. There seems to have been a few new gastropubs added to the eclectic roster of Leith Walk bars in the past couple of years. Lioness of Leith, V-Deep, Serrano Manchego and, more recently, Leith Depot and The Mouse Trap are primed to cater to the every-increasing student population in the area, and that can only be a positive thing.
Oh my word, such a good burger. We went during the day so it was quite quiet. The burgers were packed high and filled with cheesy, meaty goodness! They even serve a peanut butter burger which I desperately want to try. This place is if you want a casual lunch date with summer or a good pub style burger place in the evening.
The place is located on the main street and has a laid back surround, for that I would give it a 4. Best place to relax and have some good food.
We ordered 2 subs and 2 Cajun burger. They serve the burger along with some fries and salad. The fries are spicy and tasty. I would rate the rood as 4.
The ambiance is really well done and I would give a 3.5.
Overall, a nice place to relax and eat, that makes it 4 out of 5!
Trendy laid back bar. We went for a casual drink and burger evening. Burgers are massive and delicious. Got a good selection of drinks and service was good. What else do you need?
Our Beer Man had been to visit The Black Fox, shortly after they’d opened their doors, and reported a few issues. In good spirit, the management had responded, kept us up to date with some improvements they’d been making, and invited us in to give the revised offering a try. We declined the offer of free stuff, but said we’d pop in when next we had a spare moment.
Having walked past The Black Fox numerous times, it was a sunny Wednesday evening that I finally got to investigate. I was a little early meeting my friend but the place was already pretty busy given it was just before 6pm. Must be something about the sun that makes everyone in Edinburgh want to be out and about.
Absolutely love this place. It's got a fantastic laid back feel, great burgers and excellent banter from the staff. The beer range in here is also fantastic and it stocks many of our favourites. Each month they have special burgers alongside their regular menu. The pork and chorizo burger I had was full of flavour and the cajun fries lived up to their name. My dining partner for the night was also super impressed with her foxy burger! Definitely a must if your in the area and in need of somewhere to chill and whilst enjoying great food.
Genuinely one of the best gastropubs I’ve been to.
We went on a quiet Monday night, our first evening in Edinburgh. Sam and Freya were so friendly and made us feel right at home with good banter and fantastic suggestions. The meal itself was great. We ordered two burgers which came with a generous serving of salad and fries. Surprisingly good price too. The burger was amazing; juicy, absolutely full of food and cooked to perfection. The kiwi bloke behind the grill knows what he’s doing.
Overall I wish we had more time in Edinburgh so we could return - a highlight of our stay! Thanks team!
Decent meals at good prices with some really good drinks. They seem to be very understaffed so it was a bit difficult getting served but otherwise it was a very nice experience. Worth going for some drinks.
Great service and nice atmosphere. The menu booklet is a mood. We wanted to try specifically the burgers and had the scotsman and the foxy one. Individual elements were fantastic, from the haggis to the pulled pork to the bacon, we enjoyed them very much. We found the beef patties a bit too hard, but they were clearly done like that on purpose, chef's choice, just not to our preference unfortunately.
First experience with a Scottish pub/cafe. Food was amazing. Service was fantastic. Whisky was spot on. And all very affordable. Only planning on being here 3 days but there may be smoother meal or two consumed here.
You can feel that the place is loved by the guests and the staff too. It is in the atmosphere somehow, and that's not a common thing nowadays. That feeling stays with you alongside the memories. They're also not kidding with the food, nor the sizes nor the quality, I was amazed. I just visited the city for a couple of days and finding that place has become one of the happiest memories, somehow being there allowed me to feel what it is like living in Edinburgh. And it felt good.
This was the best place we ate in Edinburgh. The burgers are simply delicious and the fries were excellent. Nice to see some effort put into the salad, which was very well dressed. I would like to thank the waitress who was very warm and welcoming. I would highly recommend coming here.
I think I’ll come to Edinburgh again to just eat their delicious old blue beef burger!
My sister ordered the “Old Blue Beef Burger” which had delicious rich blue cheese, Cajun candied bacon, caramelised onion jam, lettuce, tomato and burger sauce. It was literally a burst of flavours!
I’ve never ever had a burger like that.
I ordered there veggie “Nacho Average Burger “ which was basically a bean burger with salsa , gauc, sour cream and tortilla chips. It sounds very special but the taste was pretty average . I would recommend to stick with the real meat burgers.
They also have a daily special menu for drinks and burgers. I ordered their drink special which was a strawberry and ginger beer mix cocktail and it was absolutely delicious. Customer service and vibe of the pub is also a full on 💯!! Highly recommend this place.
Warm friendly bar. Wonderfully friendly staff. Very dog friendly. Good food served quickly.
The Haggis Bon-Bons is my favourite, well fried haggis balls and the wise choice of honey mustard in the dish made them even more outstanding.
Nachos came in a big portion with fine toppings at a really good price. We also had the Old Blue beef burger, the patty itself was not juicy enough, it’s the accompaniment, particularly the caramelised onion jam, which made it delicious.
A good selection of beers available, and we had a sweet cider and non-alcoholic dark ale - both were great and refreshing.
Our first restaurant in Edinburgh and it did not fail! The nachos were so good! I took The Scotsman burger with Haggis and was not disappointed at all! We also loved the vibe in this restaurant and our server was super nice!
