Edinburgh is not at a shortage of good restaurants. My partner and I went for valentines night . We organised a tasting menu. We weren’t disappointed the food was amazing, service was first class and the ambiance set in the Edinburgh old town was an experience to be had . I can honestly say it was our best dining experience ever ! No wonder this restaurant has been on the go for nearly 30 years.
AH, VICTORIA STREET. The most picture perfect street in Edinburgh? Now, food is a nostalgic thing and that is certainly the case here because on rare Saturdays off, I would always visit the Grain Store for lunch. It had been a while, but the prospect of returning to the capital’s ‘Old Lady’ was exciting.
Old Town gem. The Grain Store is a great place to have a catch up dinner with friends. The unobtrusive entrance on Victoria Street doesn't seem to generate much passing trade but they nevertheless do a good job of filling the place with people who come back time after time.
The rough hewn stone walls remind you that you're in the heart of the Old Town and the menu is full of top quality Scottish produce cooked with French flair. The wine list is large and allows you to cut your cloth according to how extravagant you feel and who is footing the bill.
Excellent Scottish cuisine.. Thoroughly enjoyed a delicious lunch there in January 2009. The food was excellent, the service very welcoming.
The menu specialises in traditional Scottish/European cuisine. Definitely recommended.
It served dishes of real quality, full of beautiful, locally sourced ingredients, in a completely unpretentious way
Like sitting in a van Eyck painting, with tasty (if expensive) food and wine and friendly staff. Had a lovely rotolo (a pasta dish which I hadn't heard of before), though the sauce was a little oily. Lunch deal looked like good value.
One of my absolute favourite Edinburgh restaurants. The Grain Store is located in the vaults on Victoria Street in the Old Town. An absolute wealth of character seems to pour from the walls as you enter through the main door. This review is from a recent visit during the Fringe.
On this visit, as with all other visits, we were immediately greeted and lead to our table by the charming and warm staff. This was an early dinner off the evening a la carte menu which as usual was packed with seasonal British ingredients beautifully combined to make up a headline set of a menu.
Whilst we were making our choices we were treated to homemade bread (the malted molasses bread was great). I went for the smoked salmon starter followed by lamb fillet and belly.
The smoked salmon was beautifully presented and arrived in good time. Accompanied by some sharp pickled cucumber, radishes and a myriad of sauces all combining perfectly to provide powerful waves of fresh and smoky seafood expertly balanced by the pickled cucumber and sauces.
The lamb course was delicately cooked and, again, finished wonderfully. Deep, rich sauces blended together well with smoky roasted garlic, ratatouille and smooth, creamy fondant potatoes painted a perfect backdrop for the succulent lamb.
All other dishes chosen by our group were of a similar standard, including a very well thought out vegetarian dish involving pumpkin, goats cheese and nuts. The wine was as charming as the staff and we were finished in good time for our next Fringe show.
Simply put, you have to try this restaurant if you get the chance.
Absolute pleasure dining here. Great service, delicious food. I felt so calm and relaxed. Paul and other servers were lovely. The cod, oysters, and apple tarte were my favorites.
Dinner was Amazing! Love the space, love that you can’t find it! Oysters w mignonette, artisan bread a shot of gazpacho Hake and Mussels in a dreamy sauce. Just wonderful.
Gem in Edinburgh! Amazing mix of tradition and elegance. Relaxing and friendly environment. The food was delicious. Really a must!
We had dinner at The Grain Store in August 2023, it was absolutely incredible! The owner, Paul, was very friendly and took care of us all night. The food was excellent from starters to mains to desserts. Service was prompt and friendly, and the atmosphere and location can't be topped. We will definitely return, and 100% recommend to others.
My family and I (8 of us) had an exceptional lunch in a private room here. Everyone loved the food so much, and the atmosphere was completely cozy and inviting. Probably the most memorable part though was Paul's hospitality and warmth. I would definitely recommend coming here!
Food was delicious, and chocolate mousse was not great. Bread was fantastic. Interesting ideas with the rib steak - showcasing two different cuts on one dish.
Absolutely amazing food. Fantastic friendly and engaging staff. Excellent setting. Recommend. Will definitely be back.
I came in last minute with no reservation so I was delighted when the waitress shifted things around. The manager made time to have a chat with me even though the restaurant was busy. Honestly the food was amazing. I had the oysters and the Venison and it was outstanding. So much so that I had to ask the name of the chef. Thank you Carlo! The home made bread was phenomenal too
Undoubtedly and without question the best meal I have had in Edinburgh. Staff where very nice and helpful. The Food and wine was outstanding. Paul was lovely to chat with and went the extra mile as did the rest of the staff. Will be going again for sure in the future.
Very warm and friendly atmosphere with rustic decor. Every dish was above average. The staff were super friendly. My favourite was the beet salad with cheese.
