This month is a bit special for Ed and I; it's our five year wedding anniversary! It seems like such a long time ago....and it makes me feel a bit...old!!  We would have loved to celebrate with a summer holiday but we can't! Instead, we've got to pack and move house again as our lovely (not) landlords have decided to sell up and be completely unhelpful in the process. They simply didn't care that we'd only just moved in or that we'd need to find a new home right in the middle of festival season...a very difficult task when everyone that has a vacant place is minting it on festival lets!! Anyway, moving on, we decided to celebrate with a nice meal and a day trip instead. We were hoping to get a table at the famous Tom Kitchin restaurant in Edinburgh for our anniversary night but it was booked up for months on end. Ed eventually found Angels and Bagpipes which looked like a nice little place that serve beautiful food.Â

Angels with Bagpipes is another restaurant I’ve been desperate to try out for ages, so I was thrilled when my other half took me here for a surprise dinner. The restaurant is cosy and inviting, with a sophisticated feel, with large windows looking out on to Roxburgh Court. We arrived just in time to take advantage of the seasonal lunch menu, which offers two courses for £14.95 or three courses for £18.95, which is fantastic value considering that a main course alone from the al a carte menu costs as much. Price aside, I felt a lot more drawn to the items on offer on this menu than the full price one, pudding especially!

Have been here on many occasions and always book a table due to its location on the royal mile. I have always had excellent service and been served with delicious food. This is one of my favourite restaurants. I have never been rushed or felt pressured to finish and leave. First Class

Situated on the Royal Mile, Angels with Bagpipes manages not to offer the usual tourist fare. The restaurant was low lit with twinkly lights and was full of glossy, polished surfaces adorned with discreet cushions. The room was about half full, which was about expected at this time of the evening.

The a la carte menu was relatively short but packed full of variations on classics. I opted for the beef tartare followed by the pollock. My dining companion chose the goats cheese followed by the Ross-shire lamb.

The starters arrived relatively quickly. The tartare looked pleasing to the eye. I had spotted that it was beef rather than steak tartare, possibly indicating an inferior cut of meat. If this was the case, I certainly couldn’t tell. If tartare is on the menu I do like to give it a try. The meat had an amazing freshness to it and the egg oozed perfectly. The proportion of the quail egg to the meat was just right. The capers were not chopped up finely but somehow this added extra zing and bite to the dish. My dining companion enjoyed the goats cheese with beetroot but commented that it would be difficult to go wrong with this combination.

The mains appeared not long after. My pollock looked really appetising. The extra side of thin cut chips was a good call, with a balanced crunch –to-fluff ratio and just the right amount of salt dusting. The fish itself was cooked well and the skin was perfectly crispy. The veg alongside was adequate but nothing special. However, the star of the dish were the pickled mussels. Only a scattering of them appeared on the plate but seriously, I could have eaten a whole bowlful of those on their own. My dining companion had dithered a little over ordering the lamb as she is still a little worried about meat coming a little rarer than her liking. She was advised by staff upon ordering that it would come medium rare. I would say it was closer to the rare side than medium but my friend soldiered on. She enjoyed the dish but again, the meat was not the star. High praise was offered for the accompanying lentils.

We were automatically given the menu for dessert without being asked if we actually wanted any. Perhaps it was just the look on my face that said I was in the mood for a dessert (which is the course I am most likely to forgo). I went for the parfait and my dining partner chose the cheesecake. My parfait was tonka bean with caramel swirls, scattered peanuts and a caramel dipped hazelnut. Along with that was a Granny Smith apple sorbet. Both parts were excellent. The parfait was firm but creamy and the caramel complemented it. The sorbet was sharp and packed a punch. However, they did not go together. So I ate them as if I was eating two separate desserts, one after the other. My dining companion was a little underwhelmed by the cheesecake. The pear seemed lost in the honey and didn’t appear to have anything that made it stand out. She felt that ‘it did what it said’ but it didn’t wow.

So, overall we had a lovely time and the food was of a great standard. There were just a few bits here and there that took some of the shine off what could have been a truly astonishing meal.

First taste of Scotland. My jetlagged self stumbled into this lovely little restaurant last week, and how glad I was! Excellent service, a lovely champagne cocktail and lunch. Perfect beef tartare with crispy little toasts, followed by my first ever haggis-rich and delicious, with the required neeps and tatties and a lovely plate to look at. Accompanied by a dram of Macallan, it was a perfect wake up. Eat here, you won't regret it.

Eating with the angels (and with bagpipes).. Pure dinning experience, the atmosphere was really friendly and relaxed with a subtly hint of class. I was impressed with how staff swiftly dealt with some unruly drunken people who attempted to buy a pint or two who then became somewhat mouthy when they were refused due to lack of tables. Most important of all the food was really something special, presented like I have seen in Michelin star'd restaurants. It was however a little pricey a bottle of wine one starter, two mains and desserts was £100 with tip but well, well worth it for a treat.

Angels with Bagpipes is the latest addition to the Valvona and Crolla string of Edinburgh delis and eateries started in 1934 when Alfonso Crolla opened Valvona & Crolla on Elm Row, which is still there today.

On a sunny autumn day I was wandering around Edinburgh's Old Town, doing some shopping and enjoying the quietness that always follows the hectic August and Fringe Festival . I then took myself for a lunch to Angels with Bagpipes , new addition to Royal Mi

Angels with bagpipes is a modern fusion restaurant serving European and Scottish cuisine. Nice décor with a bit too warm dinning room. Opened in 2010 in the heart of the Royal Mile just in front of St Giles Cathedral

Heard really great things about this restaurant so headed up here for our anniversary. (Its a long drive from West Sussex). We weren't disappointed. Food was amazing, staff were fantastic. I messaged ahead to let them know it was our anniversary and we were offered a private table over looking the hustle of the Royal Mile, we elected for the main room... mainly because my Chat is a bit lacking these days! So glad we went.

Amazing cocktails! With most of the food being really good, and some of the best haggis you can find in Edinburgh, but also the worst side of chips ever, under cooked and soggy.

Popped in for lunch, plenty staff to help with seating. Wheelchair accessible with a disability toilet. Staff very helpful and catered for any dietary needs. We had the chicken breast and haggis and neeps with whiskey sauce. Both were delicious and although the plates looked like small portions they were both very filling. For 2 mains off lunch menu and 2 cokes was £32, a bit expensive but it filled us for the day. Definitely recommend a visit.

A friend of ours recommended we try this place on our recent trip to Edinburgh. The menu wasn't particularly varied, (3 types of steak out of 8 dishes), but what was on offer was delicious. My fillet steak was delicious as was my wife's plaice. Whilst there is a lovely sense of intimacy, there is a lack of atmosphere not helped by being able to overhear conversations on adjoining tables. Still, it was worth the money.

Lovely place, great service and great food. We had the chicken liver brioche, heirloom tomatoes, ribeye steaks with pepper sauce and chips, and a lovely cooked pineapple with grated coconut and mango/lime sorbet. Everything was delicious, the food was simple, but perfectly prepared and cooked, the steaks in particular were melt in your mouth good. Service was perfect, since we arrived at the restaurant 20 minutes in advance they immediately offered us a table near the entrance and were extremely helpful without being pushy. All in all, a great experience, and a highly recommended restaurant!

Lovely venue, great location, nice ambiance, wonderful staff… attentive and friendly. Haggis, neeps & tatties was ordered by three guests - food was not warm by any means, one guest asked for theirs to be replaced - this request was accepted without question and a new order was issued, food was not reheated. Overall lovely experience and would go back / recommend.

Our dinner at Angels with Bagpipes was a true celebration of taste, nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we sipped the Bobbie Sour, a whiskey-based delight that set the stage for a memorable meal, we knew we were in for a sensory feast. The appetizers were a promising start; the aromatic sourdough with olive oil was exceptional, while the heirloom tomato and burrata beautifully orchestrated a masterful play of textures and flavors. As we moved on to the mains, each dish continued the celebration of taste. The rare-cooked lamb loin, accompanied by haggis and chicory, melted effortlessly on the palate. The twelve-hour braised beef and medium-rare fillet steak stood as culinary masterpieces, each bursting with intricate flavors that demonstrated the kitchen’s expertise. The meal reached its pinnacle with dessert—the crowning touch of mascarpone mousse that was both elegant and indulgent. Our server Meghan, though new, was exceptionally attentive and amiable, making the experience even more delightful. We owe our discovery of this local gem to a friend’s recommendation, and it’s abundantly clear why Angels with Bagpipes is so cherished by Edinburgh locals.

Went for a birthday weekend away in Edinburgh and came across this place on TA, we love to go out for food and when I say I would go back to Edinburgh just for this restaurant, it’s no joke! The starters were absolutely amazing, if you opt out for smoked salmon it comes with a beautiful and light crème fresche on top of a zucchini and beautiful bits of droplet sauces to mix it all up together. Haggis was absolutely amazing and the whole presentation was so well done! For mains, the aubergine and the chicken breast were our go to, beautiful moist chicken with a paste of haggis and olives spoonful you got as well on the side of your plate that was so refreshing and innovative I could’ve eaten it from a bowl with a spoon! The aubergine was a mixture of flavours with a pleasant surprise of pomegranate with your cous cous. The cocktails were beautiful! Anna, our server, was the friendliest face and from the host to food runners and barmen you couldn’t leave without at least ten thank yous and about 100 radiant smiles. Would definitely recommend and would come back again!

If you are looking for something a little more upscale than the pub fare that is so prevalent in Edinburgh then look no further. Sure it's a little pricier than other places on The Mile but it's worth it. We enjoyed every aspect of our experience. The lamb was particularly well done and presented as was the chicken. They offer a vegetarian option and one for each meat and a fish.
