Delicious dinner, very good seafood. Cozy atmosphere, nice romantic evening. We ordered : king crab legs, octopus & merguez, lobster salad, crispy chilli squid and hassleback potatoes.
The White Horse Seafood & Oyster Bar, named after the maritime word to describe the crest of crashing waves, modernises & heroes seafood & oysters. Located in the oldest inn on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile they focus on sourcing local produce and providing diners with a chance to share & enjoy meals in their beautifully refurbished space.
Excellent food, service and music. Overall a great experience. Highly recommend the Chargrilled Octopus and the Salmon. The serving staff were so helpful. Loved the place.
Absolutely delicious. Wonderful food and an even better staff. Fresh and tasty oysters. Marvelous crab linguine! This one goes directly to my top 10.
Second time visiting, first time visit was amazing! The food was really good! Hard to imagine what it taste like from the menu thus a bit surprise but in an absolutely good way!
However second visit was during happy hour where the oyster was only £2. BUT for just four oysters we have waited for longer than half an hour. Which really pushes me off, doubt this special price worth the long wait.
Can’t recommend more on the food but please be ready for the WAIT.
Food was excellent, nice pairings.
Service was very slow though and we asked two waiters for the bill as the first one never came back. A bit on the price side but worth it as a treat once in a while. We also got the straw fries which were nice just the portion was quite small so happy we also ordered the bread with seaweed butter.

Background:
A seafood restaurant located in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town.
Ambience:
The interior is pleasant, with a cosy and intimate feel.
Service:
The service was average, with room for improvement. While the waitstaff is friendly and attentive, there are some areas where the service could be improved. For example, we were not offered a bigger table despite having no new patrons coming in. We had a few plates too many for our tiny table, which left us rushing to finish our meal.
Food:
The food was good, with a focus on fresh and locally sourced seafood
Overall:
It is a good seafood restaurant in Edinburgh, offering fresh and flavorful dishes. It would be even better if the service were more robust
Great dining experience at this place. Seafood platters were really good both the cold and hot. The scallops deserve mention as it is cooked just right. Lobsters were not large but good sized. The only gripe were on the oysters. They were real small and found the salt water soaking the fresh oyster to be a tad over whelming.
Wine list was adequate.
Overall, I would wat here again. Customer service was phenomenal. The ladies may me feel warm and welcomed. They explained the menu and knew their stuff. The restaurant was cleaned and atmosphere was good.
The food wasn't terrible, but the amount of oil made me pause slightly. The steak was cooked well and was tender. The accompany fried oysters was salty. The broccoli was good, but was also swimming in oil. The chocolate mousse was nice.
AMAZING seafood tapas restaurant! Every dish we tried was amazing. See the photos. Pleasant both to eyes and mouth. Interior is very luxurious. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of food you are getting. Friendly staff.
Nice restaurant and better go to have happy hour during weekdays. Oysters are fresh and steak is really scrumptious.
Oysters were very fresh, sourdough nice, octopus well prepared. The Tempura however could not quite meet Japanese standard, a bit oily for our taste
The dinner we had at White Horse Oyster & Seafood Bar was the best one we had in Edinburgh.
The entire staff was really great, stunning service with a calm and quiet atmosphere. Perfect for a romantic dinner but also chatting with friends.
My favorite dish was the Sesame Tuna but also the oysters, octopus, mussels and prawns lobster toast. Everything is delicious and with a wine list with normal prices.
We ended up spending 50-60£ per person and it was totally worth it.
Strongly recommended if you are in Edinburgh and want to have seafood.
Positives: food was tasty and well presented. Negatives: portions were small, service was so-so, and not super convinced by value-for-money.
White Horse Oyster & Seafood Bar could not have been a better experience. First, we were seated at the window seats and looked out on the Royal Mile and it was amusing watching people walk by to look at what we were eating and drinking. If you get a chance to sit at the window seats DO IT! The wait staff was fun and welcoming and helpful when we were deciding what to choose on the menu.
We had three types of Oysters (him) a HUGE bowl of mussels and clams (him), chips (both), Hasselback potatoes (me...and there were 5 of them!!) and charred octopus (me). Neither of us had ever had seafood taste this good, or this clean. It was amazing, the octopus tasted almost like a good cut of beef. The drinks were amazing as well. It was a nice, leisurely dinner filled with delicious, well made food and was a great stop between tours. We will definitely be stopping here again.
The best meal we have had all year! A lovely surprise! We randomly picked this place last minute on a Sunday night. The octopus was perfectly cooked, the scallops were juicy and paired well with the rest of the dish but the favorite was the scotch bonnet salmon. The wine was precisely paired and the service was friendly and quick. We will recommend to everyone💚
We only had oysters and Bloody Marys and both were good. Need to come back for a proper dinner, but had the impression that this also must be excellent .
Excellent food and Service! Atmosphere was nice but it was freezing in there. We had to keep our coats on. We had the hot seafood platter. Beautifully prepared. The tomato salad was was a delight! Highly recommend!
Fantastic waitstaff and fresh seafood at this restaurant off the Royal Mile. The octopus was fantastic. We had the hot seafood platter for L95. The scallops were good. The tempura was very good too. Oysters 🦪 tasted delicious from the sea. The lobster 🦞 was good too. So fresh! The apple tart was amazing too!
Tapas style seafood. Small plates of amazing food. Service was quick, friendly and efficient. We spent £60 each inc. a couple of cocktails.
Fantastic service and the very best seafood in the area. The manager Amy and her staff took us in and treated us like family. This restaurant is now permanently on our must visit list for every future Edinburgh vacation. Ask Amy about her sailing experience. She is a real sailor with legit, and funny, experiences on the high seas. Thank you Amy for the delicious tequila and amazing service.
Excellent quality of seafoods on a Friday night. Do have a cocktail with pineapple juice. seafood is super fresh.
Normally the kids don’t eat tasteless lobster but this time they love it very much.
Not only suitable to have gathering with friends but also with small kids.
4-5pm is happy hour, oysters £2@, but only 2 types out of 3 are included in happy hour. Monkfish satay is fantastic too.
