Reviews Bertie's Restaurant & Bar

The only reason I'm leaving four stars instead of five is that I found my fish and chips pretty good, but, given the reputation of Bertie's, for me, it wasn't the greatest fish and chips I've ever had. The service was excellent. The atmosphere is excellent. I had some salt and pepper squid as an appetizer that was excellent. The fish and chips were good, but it wasn't amazing. I was expecting to come away from the meal with my mind blown as far as the fish and chips; my mind was not blown. It was still a very good meal, with excellent service. I'm not even suggesting I'm a fish and chips expert; I'm not. For my tastes, four out of five stars.

I truly enjoyed this restaurant; the vibes and the food were just right for dinner time. The fish portion of the fish & chips was delicious! The fries were a bit under but still yummy nonetheless. Overall just a flat out great place to sit and dine.

Tried the fish and chips and it tasted good. It didn't take long until our order was served. The staff is very friendly and helpful. He told us that the fish and chips is usually fried using the same oil used for pork. He's very kind that he takes note to tell the chef to use vegetable oil instead. Thank you. I really appreciate the hospitality.

The fish was good but the chips were not as crispy as they should be. They were very soft. The lager we drank was a Scottish lager and it was delicious. The tartare sauce was packed and it was not cold. The service was very good. Our waitress was very helpful with the menu and what to order. The prices were a bit high for that taste. And they include the service fee into the bill.

We ordered fish and chips, i really enjoyed it. Curry sauce was nice and so was the tartar sauce. They also cater to your dietary needs, you can ask for the fish and chips to be fried in veg oil. The service was amazing, staff are very friendly and attentive.

To me this restaurant gives a vibe that’s made for USA citizens, don’t take me the wrong way but it kinda feels like it’s more their cup of tea and not very scottish. But I do like the interior, the food was really nice and the staff was super sweet! :) and their chippy sauce was delicious! :) I ordered a kid’s version of the traditional fish & chips, my friends had the regular size and the other one had halloumi tacos and sweet potato fries. They also liked their meals. The fish&chips is fried in beef dripping which gives it an amazing taste, but it seems like I’m beef intolerant (also fat) and got sick 2 hours later at home, but would I eat it again? Absolutely hahaha also, better to book a table before going in :) you never know

We went to Berties based on reviews for best fish and chips in Edinburgh. First impression was that it was in a great location (top of Victoria St). Staff was friendly and quickly sat us at a table. We. Prices many staff (managers?) going around and helping to seat patrons, clear tables etc. Very well run. Food was good. And not too expensive.

Our first stop for Fish and Chips on our first visit to Scotland (from Florida). We apparently started at the top. Some of the best I've had. Love the Edinburgh Chippy Sauce. The steak meat pie was great too. Great 12 yo scotch, and the Cotton Candy Martini was fun and delicious.

What a find. Killer experience overall. Service was great, food was delicious, hot and fast. Great beers and cocktails as well. Will definitely return for their trademark fish and chips with brown sauce next time in Edinburgh. Highly recommend.

We dropped in for some fish and chips as it was advertised that Berties' offers a gluten free menu, my fellow diner has an allergy to wheat, so we have to be careful. We were greeted at the door by the most upbeat smiling man who took us to our table and called "Katie" to be our server. How Katie does it is beyond me. The restaurant was extremely busy and her smile never wavered, nor did her customer focus. On discovering the allergy issues she was extremely careful to make sure that the food would be to the standard required. When it arrived we were gobsmacked. Firstly at the portion sizes, I mean, I had ordered garden peas on the side and they brought a garden of peas! The fish and chips were exactly the same. On top of that gluten free condiments were placed on the table, my daughter says that the gluten free brown sauce was amazing! The batter on the fish was beautifully crispy and the fish itself clearly fresh and perfectly cooked. The chips were what you would expect from your favourite chip shop. Overall, on a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate Bertie's 15. An overall excellent experience. One word of advice, Katie was very quick to point out that a 10% gratuity is automatically added to the bill as a "tip". You may opt to change or cancel this if you prefer, but it's useful to know what to expect.

I came here at the recommendation of my Airbnb host my first night in Edinburgh, I was so hungry and fish and chips sounded perfect. Why not try the best in the area? The food was fine but I was a bit underwhelmed. The staff were all pleasant and attentive, service was very quick despite being obviously very busy. The fish and chips came out hot and crisp, exactly as I was hoping for. However, the flavor was lacking. I had to salt quite a bit especially as there was very little tartar sauce provided. And after spending extra for some chippy gravy, which was exactly as any other instantly prepared brown gravy, I wasn't sure extra tartar sauce was free for the asking. The haddock was tender and flaky, though, so that was good. I would look around and try another place before I would do a second time.

Lively fish and chips restaurant in the Victoria Street area. I ordered the Haddock Fish and Chips and a side of Bertie's Slaw. The Haddock was fresh and a huge portion despite 1/3 being the fluff of the batter. It was served with a generous side of chips (large cut fries). Both the fish and chips were perfectly fried and golden brown served with a lemon. Bertie's slaw was creamy and made with shredded red cabbage. It was the a tasty compliment to the fried entree and a sharable portion.

Visiting Edinburgh with four others and of course, we had to have Fish and Chips. The meal was brought to our table rather quickly and when I first saw it, it was like wow! Very enjoyable! No one is our party complained. We'll worth the visit!

Ordered the steak pie and some small fish bites. The pie was great and the gravy mixed well. To drink had the espresso margarita, strong coffee flavoured with a nice aftertaste. Booked a table about an hour in advance and easy, but the place does fill up fast and it quite busy, but you can order in advance for takeout

Very interesting place with nice interior however it is very popular which causes it to have quite the wait (I think my friends and I were waiting for a table for about 10-20 minutes) because there is a lot of demand the workers also seemed quite stressed. The fish was very delicious and basically melted on your tongue and even tho the portion might seem small at first the majority of my friends couldn’t finish their meal. Overall if you want to try authentic fish and chips and are ready to have to wait for a table I would recommend this place!

We got the fish tacos, the vegetarian eggplant fried and chips, the seafood platter and the Mac and cheese fried. The food was not too bad, but not the best. Had a crisp lager and overall the ambience was quite nice. The service was quite good too.

Excellent scotch eggs....call before to make sure they have them. We got the last two and it was 11:15am. The beetroot ketchup is not to be missed. Kofi was an excellent server. Highly recommend.

I booked a table here for me and my son because he likes fish and chips and the restaurant had good reviews. The place didn't disappoint at all. There were a lot of people eating but we were quickly shown to our table. The waitress was very friendly and cheerful, and at the end when I was paying for our food, she was interested to know where we were from (I think my accent gave it away that we weren't locals) and wanted to know how to say "thank you" in Finnish. The food was brought exceptionally fast, just over 5 minutes, but everything was fresh and hot. The burger I had was delicious and the local Moonwake lager was one of the best lagers I've had recently. This was seriously one of the best restaurant experiences I've ever had. If I can, I'll definitely eat here again.
