Field April 2016
Best in Show?

I started with a Mediterranean inspired mackerel dish with Israeli couscous and AWOL mixed peppers. The mackerel was divine, and although the couscous lacked in flavour, it was a very tasty dish overall. The Man had beetroot cured salmon with a dill crème fraîche. My word, they certainly took more effort for the à la carte.

Have been to Field several times now. Excellent food, Michelin Star standard presentation and very reasonable prices. Particularly enjoyed a cod main course with a large mushroom ravioli. Love the intimate atmosphere and the attentive staff. I would recommend this restaurant for a truly special occasion.

Since opening in 2013 the general buzz around Field has been overwhelmingly positive. Due to it's intimate size a reservation has proved elusive - until now!

The first thing that struck me on arrival is the decor, clean & simple but in an unpretentious way. Usually this is a good sign as it hopefully means that the quality of the food stands up by itself.

The service was great throughout. On arrival we were seated, given menus and water, served drinks and then freshly baked bread with soft butter. Tick, tick, tick.

The menu read like a dream market day shopping list so selection was pretty tough. We are from the a la carte menu, our starters were scallops with cinnamon satay sauce and rabbit ravioli with a carrot, coriander and lemongrass velouté. Presentation was excellent and everything was very well cooked with the only mild criticism being that the rabbit dish was a little on the sweet side.

For our mains we had smoked duck with tarragon polenta, sweet potato purée & peach, and, sea bass with baked avocado and scallop, mussel and sweetcorn gratin. The sea bass was a very well worked dish and the avocado gratin was just edible luxury. The duck dish was the stand out dish of the night though - phenomenal. First class execution and presentation with a symphony of flavour combinations which sang off the plate. Very, very impressed.

We went he whole hog and opted for desserts to finish - the lemon cheesecake choux bun and Scottish strawberries with lemon sabayon. The choux bun was very well thought out. Delicate and sweet with just enough of everything to finish the meal well. The strawberry dish was slightly overpowered by the tartness and quantity of the sabayon.

The wine and service were excellent and be atmosphere was warm and cosy. Thoroughly recommend a visit to this little gem - we'll certainly be going back!

Field is an unassuming restaurant on West Nicolson Street. This place has been on my wish list for a while and I was excited to finally see what they had to offer. Field’s focus is, perhaps unsurprisingly, quality local, seasonal produce. I ordered sweet and sour quail’s breast with quail cannelloni followed by smoked duck breast. My dining companion for the evening went for smoked salmon ravioli followed by roast rump of lamb. Before the starters arrived we were given a wild garlic bread roll each with some accompanying butter.

Once the starters arrive, we were immediately impressed by their presentation.  The quail was moist and lightly pink. The cannelloni was a pleasant surprise, somehow creamy but not at the same time. The plate was drizzled with an amazingly delicious and zingy sweet and sour topping which brought the dish together. On the other side of the table the ravioli was packed to the rafters with filling. The cucumber spaghetti, coated with a yuzu dressing meant that it was sharp enough to prevent the dish from becoming too heavy.

Onto the mains, the duck was perfectly cooked and all the accompaniments, including apple and onion, were a perfect fit. The rump of lamb was not too rare and the liver wasn’t pink in the slightest. The ratatouille was tasty and the dish worked well. Both our plates were completely empty.

We had just enough room for dessert.  I couldn’t resist the sound of Bird’s custard panna cotta with rhubarb jelly, poached rhubarb and coconut and lemon cake. My dining partner went for the roast pineapple mille feuille, with muscovado and star anise cream and a coconut sorbet. Again, these were beautiful.

The staff were lovely and enthusiastic and the food was amazing. I have already recommended this place to several people and I will be heading back. Just make sure you book in advance as this place is popular – and quite rightly so.

Just had a lunch here. A friend recommended this place. I'm so happy to find it. Very small room with good few tables in. Simple and clean. The food. Outstanding. Simple and one of the best I have tasted for long time. You can taste the freshness and the talent of their chef. The wild garlic gnocchi is sensational. They have a pretty good wine and digestive list. I highly recommend this place!

This week I went to a beautiful Christmas dinner at Field Edinburgh. It has a cosy, romantic feel to it and only had a few tables. The staff like Rachel in the front of house are so friendly and helpful, and Chefs Richard and Byron are always experimenting with great new creations.

I first went to Field over a year ago for a friend's birthday. I had a beautiful, rich dish of pork belly with black pudding gnocchi which was divine. For dessert, we discovered the 'jaffaron' - a delicious and creative Jaffa cake Macaron.

I went with friends to Field this week for their set Christmas dinner menu. The choices for starters included oxtail ravioli, duck liver pâté, tomato and Aubergine soup, and mackerel. I wasn't overly keen on any of them honestly. For the main I was really eager to try the chicken with chestnuts which was excellent. For dessert I had the pistachio layer cake with homemade cherry ice cream. Everything was absolutely beautifully presented but not as flavorful with pistachio as I would have hoped.

I always have a lovely time at Field, and it is a beautiful place with high-quality, excellently presented food.

We went along for a meal during the week a little while ago but I forgot to write it up. I was glad we had booked a table as this small and cost restaurant was busy.

They have set menu options so take a look at the website as there are some great early diner deals. The service is really friendly and it feels a little like you are eating in someones front room - in a good way!

I had Salmon to start which was lovely and cheap at 5.95 I think. Main was Maple Glazed Duck Breast with Wild Mushroom Samosa, Grilled Pak Choi, Sweet Potato Fondant & Chartreuse Sauce (£13.50) My partner had one of the Fish dishes which was absolutely delish! A big juicy portion of Hake with a huge stack of chips - they boy was in heaven! Dessert was Chocolate Pave with Caramelised Banana, Toasted Pine Nuts & Peanut Butter Ice Cream (£5.50). I was intrigued by the peanut butter ice cream and worried it wouldn't quite work but, oh my, it really did. The saltiness and the sweetness go together really well and this was a stand-out component of a really great pud!

There's a good choice of wines on offer we had a fantastic Sancerre and they also have one of my favourite dessert wines Tokaji that was gorgeous.

All in all this is a great little gem of a restaurant with all the taste and technique of high quality dining without any of the pomposity or any suggestion of over-pricing. I'll definitely be visiting again...

Edinburgh's Old Town is synonymous with studentdom, and in lieu of this some it's finer establishments are often overlooked. But hobbited away on West Nicolson Street, a soft glow emanating from its romantic interior sits Field, the newly opened eatery (Jan. 2013) dedicated to fine produce and Michelin standard presentation.

This gem of a restaurant has a delightful atmosphere of ease and comfort. Very much a lived in space, the staff are friendly and attentive, and absolutely welcoming, no doubt down to the learned direction of Richard Conway. His expertise out front is mirrored by that of Head Chef Gordon Craig, who was reared amongst the best. Onetime chef at the Roux family's Waterside Inn, The Peat Inn, and The Plumed Horse, the skills gleaned from which are absolutely apparent in his food.

I ate the Pork Belly, a long time favourite cut of mine when the layers of fat and crisp and prepared correctly, and it did not disappoint. I'll admit, the potato and cabbage ball was a little bizarre, but intriguing more so and certainly delicious. Accompanied with a delightfully tangy Ponzu sauce and smoky grilled Pak Choi, I wolfed the meal down with relish.

My dinner date ate the chorizo burger with sweet potato chips, and indeed, any restaurant that deals with this delightful root vegetable is sure to be a hit with me. We spent sometime pouring over what was in the sublime spicy mayo that went with the dish, and found a few surprises. What were they? Our lips are sealed. But it's well worth a visit to find out.

Love this place.  Contemporary decor, buzzy (i.e. can be noisy, back to those hard surfaces...)  Haven't been for a while, so just booked for a pre-show one course.  It's perfectly located for festival stuff.  Fresh, local ingredients.  Great, reasonably priced and well-presented food.  Nice people.

Easily one of my favourite restaurants in Edinburgh.

The food is a great showcase of fresh local produce, the service is always impeccable and the wine list packs a punch.

Ambience is laid back and casual. The dining room is cosy and only seats 25, if you're planning a meal here, it definitely pays to book!

Since writing my first review 2 years ago, Field remains my favourite restaurant in Edinburgh. Never disappointed, whether lunch or dinner, the dishes are perfectly presented, bursting with flavours that can all be accompanied by the various options on the excellent wine list. Always made to feel welcome, eating at Field is the perfect place for a superb family meal. Having brought family members multiple times over the years, I can whole heartedly say this restaurant is a must when in Edinburgh.

We visited here on the 11th Oct before a show at the festival theatre. We arrived early and were able to sit at our table. Food was very very good and value for money on pre theatre was fab!!. Place is small and would advise booking if you want a specific night. Front of house staff were very nice and attentive. I will definatly be coming back . Great find!!

Had the set lunch and pre theatre menu. Absolutely incredible value for money. The dishes are flavourful yet still balanced. The place is on the smaller side though. Highly recommended!

Small and intimate. Don’t be fooled by the unpretentious and and simple interior the food is what is in focus here! You need to book in advance. We had a lovely vegetarian cheddar and cauliflower mousse for starters, and braised Jacob’s ladder and Guniea fowl for mains. Delicately presented by a lovely sommelier. We were the only foreigner here, and felt completely at ease. Highly recommended

Very creative use of ingredients and flavours. Portions may be a bit on the small side. Definitely a good dining experience. Do make reservations as it's a small space that can't accommodate many and is usually busy in the evenings!

Best meal I've ever had, anywhere. The service was friendly, it was easy to get a table, despite the small dining room size, and each detail of the dish was top notch. The presentation of the food, as well as the flavors, were perfect. First place I'll go for a meal when I'm back in Edinburgh.

Absolutely delicious food - I had the starter of scallops, then pheasant (replacing quail on menu) followed by bread and butter pudding. Only slight disappointment was that pheasant was a bit overcooked. Partner would have liked a bit more choice on the menu and the setting is very intimate (tables quite close together) as it is a small restaurant, but the tastes were divine.

Went here for lunch and were blown away. Never had this amazing quality of food for that kind of price. Octopus, Fish, Duck, Beef, all was fantastic. Can't believe some of the comments here. Portions are absolutely sufficient if you take a starter just like you are supposed to. Waiting staff was super nice too. It's a rather small room so I would not recommend it for large groups.
