Extremely tasty breakfast, well presented, great service and a lovely environment. Couldn’t fault and would return without hesitation. Coffee and chai were great also, particularly the chai. Best we’ve ever had

Cosy, authentic cafe in old Town. Friendly service & great food selection. Ideal for a big brunch or a quick snack. It can get busy, so do expect to wait for a table at busy times.

Cosy little cafe in the old town. Prompt and friendly service. I had the scotch pancakes with honey butter. Rich, sweet, fluffy, an absolute delight. Very well priced

Went here for a late Sunday brunch after checking the reviews - Edinburgh Larder didn't disappoint! I ordered the roasted red pepper and basil soup-of-the-day with half a balsamic aubergine and broad bean pate sandwich. The staff were very accommodating making my half sandwich with gluten free bread. My SO ordered the honey leg ham, gherkin and wholegrain mustard sandwich which came with a beautifully dressed side salad. Sandwiches took a little while coming out but were worth the wait.

The entire meal felt wholesome and nutritious, and knowing they source all of their produce locally makes it even better. Proper soul food.

I have been in this cafe twice and I had the best, most delicious traditional Scottish breakfast ever. I can say Everything tastes fresh and is home made. Their fresh organic orange juice plus their home made baked beans and beautifully cooked poached eggs it's just a divine. It's
Really important to note that I love the rustic environment of the cafe which is full of positive vibes. Every time I was there I wanted to say I can't get enough of this place. I highly recommend this cafe for those who has the chance to visit the beautiful Edinburgh

Centrally located and easy to find the small cafe was a delight. It's in the non busy side street which makes it more like a relaxed place to enjoy your breakfast.
The cafe was modestly designed and has a home like feeling. Small space well utilized. If You are lucky you might get the comfort corner in the Edinburgh Larder near the window.
Again the staff was friendly and it felt like home talking to them. (I must admit staff everywhere we went in Edinburgh was friendly shopping malls, restaurants, cafe's, hotel). We ordered sausage roll in brown bread with fresh juice and cappuccino. Our order was simple and had no complex culinary skill's to do, it was as I expected.
Service was quick and it didn't take me long to devour the whole thing.
Price which I feel is the most important thing was right up my street. Inexpensive breakfast + good ambiance = good rating

I do recommend this cafe.
Plus, I'd recommend you to be more adventurous with your breakfast and go for a full Scottish breakkie.

Great changing specials. Love the fact you can choose your side salads. I have nothing bad to say about this place. Well, maybe one. It's sooo hard getting a table! Especially a weekend breakfast or brunch? Don't risk it! Book a table.

The most wanted breakfast place on the planet. Just off The Royal Mile, this is hoarded with tourists waiting to get in.. And every second is worth it. I had the French Toast and baked egg.. It left is wanting for more. The cakes on the shelf looked irresistible. We came back in the evening. But it was closed by then.. If I ever happen to go back there, this is one place I will never miss..

We wanted to eat a full Scottish breakfast so after the search in zomato we fond Larder and Immediately caught our attention.

Larder is in the old town and the place is very simple and not very big. We really like one painting on the wall que marked the places Were the ingredients cam from and the indredients and cakes in display.

For breakfast we choose the full Scottish breakfast and a toast with egg and salmon. It was all perfect, the ingredients Were all natural, the sausages and black pudding was delicious, the egg was perfectly cooked and the salmon very fresh. All went perfectly with the fresh bread. To drink BOTH the latte and the tea were very good.

The staff was always very friendly and the service fast and efective.

I can fully recommend the Larder Cafe, and excellent choice to eat breakfast or the awesome cakes que were there in display and being made in the kitchen.

Nice lunch. My wife and I had a pot of tea and sandwiches on the way down the royal mile from the Edinburgh Castle. The larder is informal and the servers are eager to please and genuinely personable despite having a clientele of boorish tourists such as us. There's only a few tables, but we were able to get seats at 1:00 on a spring Friday afternoon. Prices seemed reasonable to me.

I had a smoked fish sandwich (mackerel) which is served on two thick slices of an artisan whole wheat bread with a small side of a chickpea cous-cous and salad greens. My wife had the goat cheese. Doesn't sound like much, but everything was prepared with thoughtful care, would definitely recommend.

The Edinburgh Larder wraps you in a completely different kind atmosphere. If sipping a coffee on Artisan Roast’s window sill felt like one of studenthood’s long lost pleasures, winning a table on the Larder’s tiny, packed floor was the equivalent of treading the inescapable path towards maturity. The clientele seemed to be mostly made of small groups of friends, relatives and colleagues: the privileged population of a comfortable world, made of relaxed weekend breakfasts with loved ones, and convivial lunch breaks in cosy places just round the corner from the office. I wouldn’t be surprised to find they’re all regulars, as the Edinburgh Larder gives the occasional visitor more than one good reason to return, the first and most important being the quality of the food.

We went for breakfast to the Edinburgh Larder. You can have either breakfast and/or lunch in this small no frill no fuss spot, just a few steps away from the hassle of the Royal Mile

Lovely selection of locally sourced food! I LOVE when places offer "soup and half sandwich" combinations and both were delicious- expensive but tasty. Vegan friendly.

Generally I'm not a fan of buying sandwiches out, they usually aren't much better than the supermarket/well known chemist meal deals but then you find somewhere like EL that goes above and beyond and although it's not cheap, you savour every single mouthful and you are in sandwich heaven.

We've been here many times and the food is consistently amazing. It is about £7-£8 for a sandwich, about £4 for soup or a half sandwich half soup deal for about £7ish. We always get a full sandwich and full bowl of soup, not because we are greedy pigs (well, we kind of are) but because it's so damn good.

The food is very fresh. The bread gets sliced there and then, the fillings are scrumptious (the salmon and the chicken options are amazing) and the side salad is so tasty and you feel healthy. Also, whatever the soup is we are in awe, yes IN AWE of their simple but delicious flavours. We always leave full, but not a heavy kind of full, a full of tasty goodness kind of full.

I wouldn't give anywhere 5 stars on the basis of food alone and as in a previous review, the thing that makes it for us is the super friendly staff who are always smiling and accommodating. You genuinely feel like they are grateful for your custom, you feel welcome and you leave feeling full and happy.

It does get very busy here though, so often you'll share a table but that just adds to the fun.

The Edinburgh Larder is just off the Royal Mile but, tucked away on Blackfriars St, it tends to be filled with more locals than tourists. And it usually is filled. I went during a Sunday afternoon in the Festival to meet a friend for coffee. The place was packed but it had a nice ambiance to it and the coffee was great. I've heard they have great food so I'll be back another time to try it!

If sipping a coffee on Artisan Roast’s window sill in the New Town felt like one of studenthood’s long lost pleasures, winning a table on the tiny, packed floor at the Edinburgh Larder's Old Town cafe was the equivalent of treading the inescapable path towards maturity.

The deli counter offers a diverse choice of savoury fares, all made with seasonal ingredients sourced from independent local producers. Breakfast and lunch menus are varied enough to cater for both tiny and more substantial appetites, fussy eaters and omnivores; and even if you’re not as “in the know” as it takes to marvel at the Slow Food sticker on the front door, there’s no escaping the success of the taste test. As a light lunch, I enjoyed a sandwich made with artisan sourdough, cut on the premises and served with a choice of two pulse salads. Simple enough to remind me of my weekday packed meals, except that the joy of savouring my lunch at the Edinburgh Larder was as far from the gloom of eating from a Tupperware box as it can get.

As for dessert, I'll leave you with the proverbial picture worth a thousand words: the Plum Victoria Sponge that won my heart at first sight. Soft sponge, sweet and smooth buttercream, an unusual yet winning twist on the jam filling: need I say more?

Absolutely wonderful little place in a side street! We had the fish plate, deli plate, salmon salad & their day special soup (potato & taragon I think). Everything was mouth watering. The servers were quite friendly & the service quick. Keep up the good work guys!

Edinburgh Larder Bistro is the perfect place to enjoy seasonal Scottish cuisine. The team at the Bistro, located on Alva Street, work with local suppliers to bring you the best produce direct from field & sea to plate, only the freshest will be served.

The décor is light and airy and although the restaurant is made up of charming warren of nooks and crannies it is difficult to imagine you are in the city centre of Edinburgh.
Whatever dining experience you are looking for; from a relaxed evening meal to a business lunch or private function: you’ll enjoy the Bistros confident take on blending the interesting tastes of Scotland

If the delicious food wasn't enough it is the perfect place to unwind whilst indulging in one of the botanical drinks produced in Scotland – Edinburgh Gin, Pincer Vodka, Scotch Malt Whiskies, Scottish Brewed beer or there is also a carefully selected range of wines and champagnes.

Edinburgh Larder Café is on Blackfriar Street, a small, deli-style café that competes with Earthy in the salad stakes. The café caters for breakfast and lunch and then the Bistro takes over in the evening. The two places have different atmospheres but share a food ethos. The Bistro is on Alva Street, in a down-stairs unit I remember from when it was Bouzy Rouge, many years ago. The interior has been through a few changes since then but it is still a relaxed, cheerful space. We sat in the back, in what was once a tiny outside area and is now a room a little away from the hubbub of the main restaurant spaces.

Lush Starters

I started with black pudding on brioche with a soft boiled quail’s egg on top. I’m a great fan of black pudding and it’s sturdy flavour was framed rather nicely by the creamy, yolk-rich egg and the sweet brioche. It also came with a dollop of home-made brown sauce which was wonderfully fruity. I’m not usually a fan of brown sauce but this I enjoyed.

Meanwhile, my companion had the scallop with ham hough and nettle puré. It was a really pretty dish as well as a tasty one: the bright green pure looked vibrant next to the pink ham hough and the demurely creamy scallop. Cooked to perfection it was sweet, salty and creamy all at the same time.

Moving on to Mains

Yes, I was brought up with the idea that you start with fish and move on to red meat but I usually do it the other way around. So for mains I had the fish of the day (hake) with heritage potatoes, beetroot and radishes. The fish was perfect: flaky, tender and with a crispy skin. Beetroot complements white fish well with its earthy flavour and almost crunchy texture. The radishes were a nice, refreshingly crunchy addition.

On the other side of the table was a glamorous plate of duck with a beef cheek croquette, layered potatoes and a red wine jus. It was just as yummy as it sounds.

We had a side of sweet potato chips just because. Sweet potato is soft and soothing, sweet and almost fudgy in chip form. They worked well with fish and meat both.

A Sweet End

Carrot ice cream. That swung my dessert choice. The green tea ice cream was tempting, and the cheese board looked great, but the chocolate fondant came with beetroot granita and carrot ice cream so chocolate fondant it had to be. The fondant was chocolatey and gooey in a very pleasing way. The beetroot granita refreshing. The carrot ice cream was a little more interesting on paper than it was on the plate – it was a smooth and had a lovely colour but I didn’t get quite the carrot hit I expecting. Saying that, it tasted good, and the trio of flavours were fun together.

My companion is a cheese fan (it strikes me that many of my companions are) and had the cheese board and chose Blue Monday and Morangie Brie. Both were perfectly ripe and full of flavour. The home made oatcakes were crumbly and very moreish – I could cheerfully have eaten them with a spoonful of chutney on top.

Edinburgh Larder Bistro always gives a warm welcome and interesting food from local producers. Some of the ingredients are foraged and it doesn’t get more local or seasonal than that. Foraged ingredients are used inventively – I have fond memories of a sweet cicely sorbet, and the nettle pure with the scallops added colour and flavour.

Edinburgh Larder support the Slow Food campaign. Everything they do shows their commitment to serving great food that’s seasonal, sustainable and Scottish.

Delicious breakfast food and coffee! There was a queue forming when we got here just before opening time at 8am, and it’s no wonder. We ordered the Full Scottish Breakfast and the Waffle, as well as a long black and a cappucino. Food and coffee were both excellent. Service was great too!

Coming here for breakfast and I was really satisfied with the food. We ordered the porridge and waffle and both tasted delicious. It's a must try especially for breakfast. No waiting time when we came here. The coffee was warm. It'd be good if it's hotter.

We booked the table for 3 people at 7.30 am. It required £5 deposit for reservation. It is a small lovely cafe. The food was fast and delicious. We also ordered their scone with clotted cream and jam. The scone smells great and the cream is nice. Plus, the staffs there are warmly welcome.

A true hidden gem of a kind. Just next to the busy Royal Mile, this place serves the best of breakfasts. The portion was huge for the Veggie Breakfast with the Veggie Haggis, chestnut mushrooms, spinach, poached egg, potato scone, tomatoes and obviously the granary breads. The staff were welcoming and professional. Would highly recommend.

Lovely place for breakfast. One of the few vendors open before 9am but worth it with excellent service and food served in cute tin boxes. We were also given plates with the tins. So no need to eat from the box if not wanted. They don't accept Amex. Great coffee with alternative milks available.

A local spot for local dishes using quality ingredients. You can make a reservation to guarantee a table or wait in line for the little larder that is first come first serve. Baby and pet friendly friendly. The food is good nevertheless the presentation in silver trays could be improved for a better experience.

Amazing spot for breakfast just off the Royal Mile. Both the full scottish breakfast and the eggs benedict were delicious! Great drinks choice too. There are two cafés next to each other - the first is the original and generally needs a reservation whereas the second is for walk-ins. Would definitely recommend a visit!
