I've wanted to try Union of Genius' soup for so long but as they say "If Mohammed will not go to the mountain, the mountain must come to Mohammed" and there it was! Union of Genius in my office for one hour serving their delicious soups! And so I finally had a chance to try their soup and I must say I've never ate better! Only maybe my mom makes a better one but she lives far away so this is my number one soup option now in Edinburgh. I had a sweet potato soup with coconut accompanied by olive bread and it was delicious! Tick and filling and even though it was only a small size that I got it was big enough! I'll be going to their place on Forrest Road, now there is no distance between me and the soup!
What a great find! An unsuspecting green frontage leads you into a plethora of taste sensations served in bowls. Let's face it - Edinburgh rarely gets hot enough to turn your nose up at soup, but it does, they also put on a range of gazpacho. Seven peeps make up the union and they have a truck that parks by the university as well as the shop. Check them out. The food and staff are lovely.
There’s no doubt about it. If you want soup in this city, there is only one place to go: Union of Genius. But don’t take my word for it – they have a whole rack of awards and accolades, judged by people far more worthy than I, that goes to show just how soupy their soup is. I first discovered Union of Genius in a seemingly unrelated cafe a few miles away in Leith. I worked in an office nearby and every lunchtime without fail I would pop in to get my daily soup fix. The flavours were varied, exotic and unusual, ranging from bacon and butternut to caldo verde, but no matter what I chose, I always savoured every mouthful.
Ultimate Comfort Food. On a cold wet autumn day, what better than some hot spicy soup and crusty bread ? As soon as you open the door you are hit by the aroma and your tastebuds are further tormented as you scan down the menu board. It's a cosy little place and if you are lucky enough to find a seat and start to eat, you really don't want to leave. Needless to say, my harira, tomato and red pepper soup was sublime and I'm seriously hooked !!
PS: if you have a favourite soup you can request it. I'm looking forward to their version of mulligatawny !!
The soup was good. It had the right amount of seasoning and the olive bread that was recommended was a good accompaniment in the Italian theme of my lunch, but didn’t blow my socks off. Peter’s Yard still gets my bread-bakers-deliciousness award.
Lovely people, excellent quality and original recipes, even gluten free options. Only needs more seating here but check their web site for the many cafes who use their soup
What an amazing lunch spot! Affordable, delicious soups and chillies. We got there at around 2 and they only had 2 soups remaining, probably not what we would usually go for but they were delicious, warming and comforting. The bread was nice too. They also donate a lot to the community and you can sit inside or take away. Will be back when next time in Edinburgh.
A cosy little soup place, popular so you might struggle for a seat!
We had the golden chicken chilli and the peri peri chicken soup. Very tasty.
If you're nearby, give it a try!
Best Chilli & Soup !!!
Definitely worth it for those who want a warmy soup!
It literally woke up my palette! Super loving it!
For years now this has been one of my go-to lunch spots in Edinburgh. Each day, they have a selection (5-6) of soups of the day, most of which are vegetable-based or even vegan. You can either chose one, or have their ‘flight of 3’ where you get mini portions of three soups of your choice. That’s always what I’ve done, and absolutely what I recommend doing, as they’re all delicious. Soups also come with bread and spreadable Lurpak. This restaurant is also doing lots of good: they donate soup to homeless shelters, all their tableware is compostable, and they offer discounts for bringing your own containers. At checkout, there’s an option to pay it forward (buy a meal for future person in need). Beware though that this is a local favourite and there’s limited seating, so you may need to queue, takeaway, or sit near strangers.
We had a choice of lovely hearty soups and crispy croutons- this is my perfect lunch spot! Fast and friendly service and sound ethics too - providing soup for those in need. It was so good we went 2 days running! The flapjack was delicious too. Other options also sounded good...
Have been coming here for years. Loveeee all their soups, especially the vegan chilli — it has a special place in my heart! (or tummy, haha) There are multiple soup options available everyday that account for different allergies/dietary requirements. And the honey cake is lovely too!! Also want to thank the staff (at both the cafe and van) for being approachable and patient.
Have been here several times- perfect winter spot. It gets busy so you may have to wait a few mins for a table, but the staff are really great and helpful. The soup is great- every day there are 6 flavours, usually half are vegan.
They serve really great bread and coffee, and you can also pay for suspended coffee or soup for people in need (eg homeless people). Love it.
Have been here few times and usually they have lots of soup options. All that I’ve tried were great and balanced. Totally recommend!
I was having a terrible day and needed a perk me up, and was pleasantly surprised that lunch here did the job!
Having a nice hot soup, rich with flavour and ingredients, along with bowl of golden chicken chilli and chips, was perfect. The warm atmosphere at this outlet, with customers from all walks coming in, friendly staff and awesome music playlist, though I was dining alone, I had a great time.
😄
I don't eat soup but I keep coming back to this tiny restaurant close to my office. Their vegan chilli is amazingly delicious and super good value for money. So filling! I also love that they only use compostable containers for their takeaway stuff and if you bring back 10 of them you get a free meal. They are also very involved with the community and help out homeless people.
