A fine-dining atmosphere but an intimate venue with delightfully friendly staff, serving Michelin quality cuisine at a pub food price. Literally everything you could want in a restaurant as a travelling foodie can be found right here!

The menu is guarantee to inspire and delight, so much so that I cancelled my pre-existing dinner plans when I walked past and saw their evening offerings. Despite having no booking, the lovely front of house staff found me a table, and treated me just like a local.

I chose two starters and dessert rather than a main as I was intrigued by some of their 'starters masquerading as desserts', and I was overwhelmingly impressed with my choice!

To commence the occasion, the bread basket arrived with a beautiful thyme and garlic olive oil for dipping - delicious!

My first starter was the Isle of Mull cheddar and onion bread and butter pudding with fennel ice cream and confit tomato. So good it'll make you forget everything you know about bread and butter pudding, with the fennel ice cream being nothing short of absolute genius.

A brief complimentary palate cleanser followed, in the form of raspberry coulis with ginger beer in a shot glass. Very refreshing!

Next, the lobster Thermidor creme brûlée with Bloody Mary sorbet, parmesan cracker and caviar. The flavours were perfectly balanced, with every element incredible on their own but harmonious together. They even managed to recreate the satisfying crack when hitting the top of the brûlée with a spoon!

Last but definitely not least, the actual dessert. Chocolate torte with caramelised hazelnut, yuzu gel and sweet cicely gelato (with a tiny hint of absinthe!). Sheer brilliance! A constellation of sweet, savoury and tangy, with a flurry of textures and an amazing hint of ainseed. One of my favourite desserts ever!

I cannot fault the phenomenal food; as well as the attentive staff who made me feel just as welcome as if I was with a much larger table. If you're a foodie going to Edinburgh, you simply MUST go here and prepare to have your perspective on Scottish food reshaped entirely.

So, this was the month that I was supposed to be not eating out due to serious over spending on holiday. But then Edinburgh Restaurant Festival came along, and I obviously couldnt ignore that! The festival offers great special fixed price three course lunch and dinner menus at some great restaurants across the city. Choosing from the exciting variety of restaurants on offer was dificult, especially since a few of them were on my wishlist. In the end it was the menu at Wedgwood that excited me the most!

Wedgwood had been on the hitlist for quite some time, so I had built up my own hype about it before I even walked in the door. Opted for the 'deciding time' to begin...because who doesn't want a glass of fizz and some amuse bouche to start things off?! The soup was pretty disappointing and was more like chicken stock, but the meal picked up from there. The scallops are delish, would highly recommend them, and my trout dish was also very tasty. Would have been much better if it hadn't been for a slightly abrupt waitress and a pretty rubbish chicken soup thing. Ended up feeling a bit shortchanged overall after waiting so long to go.

Wedgwood has always been a restaurant that I hold in high regard. It was recommended to me by a good foodie friend and I spent a wonderful, if very decadent and expensive, first evening there a few years ago with a much-missed friend who now lives in Toronto. It was also my first choice for my recent birthday meal and I was sad to find it was closed for the dates I required.

Thus, feeling in need of fine-dining, and happy to see that the restaurant had re-opened, I decided to take Tom there on a surprise dinner date (I'm not one for stereotypical gender roles!).

Appetites whetted by a few cocktails in Monteiths (we love the bar area for drinks!), we made our way down the Royal Mile to the pretty lamp-lit entrance. We were quickly escorted to a white-linen clad table downstairs and were happy to be away from the bustle of the busy upstairs room. I had pre-ordered drinks and they arrived promptly: a refreshing and fruity glass of blanc de blancs and a Botanist and tonic. Happy and comfortable, we perused the menu.

The menu at Wedgwood is always exciting and it can be difficult, and time-consuming, trying to choose from the myriad of delicious options. As such, instead of the usual amuse bouche to tide you over while you wait for starters, Wedgwood offer a 'deciding time' option of fizz and a selection  of appetisers to keep you going while you choose. I had really enjoyed this during my last visit, but two glasses of fizz, on top of all of the cocktails at Monteiths, seemed a little much- so we decided to skip it this time.

It was a difficult decision, but we both decided to opt for the 'Wee tour of Scotland' menu- a tasting selection that included most of the dishes we would have chosen from the a la carte and an old favourite that I was excited to see- the goat's cheese semi-fredo!

We also ordered a bottle of Chateau Ka- a Lebanese wine filled with the flavours of strawberries and black pepper that I can never resist when it appears in a wine list!

First to arrive on the table was a little plate of homemade bread served with a garlic and thyme dip.

The bread was absolutely delicious- soft and cakey with a sweetness akin to brioche. The dip made for a perfect accompaniment with the tangy sour and sweet flavours reminding me of an aromatic stew I ate once as a child in the Canary Islands and never quite forgot. It didn't last long...

This place is fab what more can I say. I know the restaurant has won the accolade of Scottish restaurant of the year ... and now I understand why!! The food is superb - freshly and expertly cooked - wonderful flavours melding together beautifully. The service is unobtrusively excellent. I would have absolutely no hesitation whatsoever in recommending this restaurant for a truly special evening out. Make sure to try the deliberation - a glass of fizz and canapés whilst you peruse the menu!!!

Wonderful meal and great dining experience. We just dined at Wedgewood, and came away with the feeling of having a great dining experience. The menu was creative, the wine list varied, and the service was excellent. We had the wild Scottish deer and the gnocchi as mains, along with an unbelievable dessert containing chocolate and peanut butter. One of the sides with the deer was venison haggis. Although I've never had haggis before, and was unsure whether or not to try it, I'm very glad I did. It had a great texture and excellent seasonings. We never felt rushed and the various wait people were helpful and solicitous. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a gourmet meal.

We had a superb meal this evening at the Wedgewood. We called up at the last minute (5:45) and were told they had a table at 6pm or 10pm. We took the early reservation and were treated royally. The pigeon starter was tasty, Scottish and a pleasure to the eye. Judy and I couldn't have been happier with our mains or deserts. Thumbs up from us.

Lunch time brilliance!. Staying near this restaurant when visiting Edinburgh is a treat. Each morning a lunch menu appears in the window. Each day is different. I had lunch there when they had a focus on foragedd food. the nettle soup with poached quail egg was exquisite. Fresh food cooked well. I'm looking forward to visiting E again so I can sample some more of their food.

Wow!!!!! Just Amazing. Possibly the best meal I've ever eaten. Service was friendly and efficient but not intrusive and despite arriving late and taking an hour over starters the timing of the arrival of the incredible main course was perfect. Scallops on a haggis bed, just sensational and the biggest scallops I've ever seen. I'm always wary of very touristy areas but be not concerned even though Wedgwood is on the royal mile, if you have the opportunity, 80 quid for 3 courses and excellent bottle of Pinot Gris for 2 then you need to go, you will be waxing lyrical about the taste sensations for a long time.

There are a collection of big name restaurants in Edinburgh that hold the pprivilegedposition of being 'established'. Wedgwood on the Canongait is one such place. It has attracted foodies from far and wide, and general consensus is extremely positive, enough to win the 'Restaurant of the Year' Award from the Scottish Licensed Trade News for the past three consecutive years. As is our habit, s.o. and I fancied somewhere smart to eat but had no reservation so we thought we would visit this most hallowed of eateries and try our luck.

If one word had to sum up a recent meal at Wedgwood , I’m pretty sure that mum, my dining companion for the night, would agree that ‘immaculate’ would be a fine choice of adjective. Having taken the train up from Dunbar for the occasion, she was quickly assured that a 60 mile round trip was a short journey for such a great dining experience! Paul & Lisa Wedgwood opened their Canongate restaurant in 2007, and it doesn’t look like the seven year itch is kicking in anytime soon. The restaurant has two dining rooms, one at street level and another downstairs space, both of which are cosy (compact or bijou!) and despite our having arrived for a rather early 6pm dinner booking on a Friday, the place filled up immediately, creating a buzzy vibe. We were offered a selection of amuse-bouches which definitely set the tone for the rest of the night’s eating. We supped a satin-smooth carrot soup from espresso cups, tucked into a spoon of perfectly sweet lobster meat dotted with the saline burst of

Wedgwood is on the Royal Mile and when we were there, a Monday in December, it was busy if not packed out. We’d been trying to arrange a date for a while: C. really wanted to go but he’s been working down south a lot so it’s been difficult to arrange. It was a real treat when we finally went and I’m pleased that he didn’t miss out. Wedgwood may not be a big restaurant, but it is a great one.

While you choose…

Great idea! As you sit down with the menu, have a glass of champagne and a tray of amuse bouches. We did. The Paul Dangin champagne was lovely: crisp and clean, with bags of apples. Our amuse bouches were a salmon and scallop tartar, a ham hock terrine and a leek velouté with curry oil. The tartare was to die for. The delicate flavours balanced each other very well and the portion sizes were perfect. It made us want more. It was decision time.

Starter: Lobster; Blue Cheese

Lobster thermidor crème brulee. How can you possible turn that down? It was an easy decision although there was a really good range of dishes on the menu. Strong main ingredients supported by interesting flavours and textures. Scallops and cauliflower korma, stir-fried shredded beef fillet with pear, and Lanarkshire blue cheese risotto bon bons. I loved the lobster crème brulee, It was creamy and rich but came with a Bloody Mary sorbet that helped cut through the cream and a delicious Parmesan shortbread. Hiding at the bottom of the pot were chunks of tender lobster.

C. meanwhile has the Lanarkshire blue risotto bonbons which not just attractive but also really good. Crunchy on the outside, soothingly creamy on the inside and with a heart of melting blue cheese, they are happy making bonbons indeed. The cheese was strong enough to be a presence but not so strong as to drown the rice.

Between dishes we got a palate cleanser of raspberry coulis and drops of lemon sorbet in ginger beer. It was fresh, zingy and did a great job of clearing our palates and minds in preparation for the next dish.

Mains: Rabbit; Fennel

The restaurant is on two levels: the upstairs is the main dining room and has about 30 covers. It is open and elegant in a relaxed way. We sat where I could look through the pass into the kitchen. It was the perfect seat for a curious writer. The view was interesting: I could see hands and arms, but no faces, except when the reflections of the waiters aligned with the chef’s bodies in the dark copper mirrors of the dining room. The pass and the waiter area are on show which gives an open and friendly feeling to the restaurant. That friendliness is carried through by the staff. Everyone we dealt with was friendly and professional. We were made to feel very welcome. I rather admired the waiter’s outfits: comfortable but smart grey dresses or tunics with the restaurant’s name on the hip.

Our mains looked – and tasted – great. C. had the roast pepper, rocket, pinenut and Orkney grimbister tian, which came with a fennel gratin which I enjoyed a lot. (I always enjoy getting to taste all of C’s dishes even though he can’t taste mine. But I have to, for research.) The tian was simple and very tasty.

My main was rabbit wrapped in pancetta spinach and wild mushroom, carrot and vanilla puree, shallots and thyme. I’ve enjoyed having flavoured carrot purees recently and the vanilla one that came with the rabbit worked well and balanced the heavy umami flavours of the meat. Delicate pieces of rabbit, tenderly wrapped in pancetta, on a large, comfortable bed of wild mushrooms. Delicious! The mushrooms enveloped me in pangs of nostalgia: we used to go foraging when I was a child and would eat wild mushrooms on toast for weeks in the autumn. I didn’t appreciate it then, but I do now. Dotted around the rabbit were perfect pieces of potato and crunchy bonbons of dark meat. Each element was delicious and tasting them was like unwrapping an early Christmas present. They were gorgeous separately, and great together.

Desserts: Cheese; Coconut

Deciding between cheese and a sweet can be difficult, so it’s great to see a dish like the hazelnut and blue cheesecake with spiced poached pear which gives you both on the one plate. The poached pear was wonderfully seasonal – the poaching liquid was warm with spice and had a good, strong red wine flavour – and served in a separate glass, a good thing since it looked as if it might be jellied. While I ate that, C. focused on the cheesecake which was big on blue cheese flavour and fabulously smooth. Two of the staff recommendations for dessert were honey roast parsnip crème brulee which sounded lovely, and the spiced apple confit, crumble and ginger beer jelly, which also sounded fabulous. The food at Wedgwood has good flavours and interesting textures that let the ingredients shine.

Dessert was a very difficult call but I eventually decided on the coconut panna cotta with sweet cicely sorbet, pistachio crisp and sweet beetroot. The pistachio crisp was lovely and I enjoyed the crunch of it and pistachios with the silky panna cotta. Coconut isn’t usually a flavour I’d go for but I knew this one wouldn’t be overpowering, and I was right. The sweet cicely sorbet, with its clean aniseed flavours, was a perfect accompaniment. I first met sweet cicely a few weeks back when I miss-sold it to a friend by getting the flavour completely wrong. As a result I got to eat her sorbet. (Aniseed is not to everyone’s taste.) A fan of all things anise and licorice, I wish you could get tubs of sweet cicely sorbet. It’s just lovely.

Wedgwood is a great restaurant. We enjoyed everything from the menu and the wine list, to the service, the ambiance, and, of course, the food. Although the size of a neighbourhood restaurant, this is a place to go for a special meal, a place to take time over your meal and really enjoy it.

There are a collection of big name restaurants in Edinburgh that hold the privileged position of being 'established'.

Fortunately, we came early and were first in, bagging a table that wasn't reserved for another hour or so. Slowly, the restaurant filled up and was positively buzzing by the time we left.

The service was brilliant. Not overbearing but always present when needed. The restaurant is comfortable, with a nice view out to the tail of the Royal Mile, but you can tell that the focus for Wedgwood is very much the food.

We plumped for salmon, roe and creme fraiche for s.o. and a pea soup with truffled honey and blue cheese for me. They were very simple starters, but quite pleasing flavors. I personally felt that the soup was under seasoned, but the few spoonfuls that had cheese and/or honey in them were divine. S.O. liked his but he thought the salmon starter he ate at Clouds & Soil a few weeks ago was more to his 'adventurous' tastes.

The mains fared better. S.O. went for the pigeon dish, which was accompanied by deep fried haggis, and I (unusually) went for the fish dish, which on this occasion was coley with chorizo, beans and pickled onions. I adored my dish. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the flavors were both fresh and robust. Very clean cooking, and reminiscent of my mothers cooking which always helps. S.O. also liked his dish, and found the flavors to be more exciting than his first course.

Normally, we would stop here, especially for lunch, but I saw a sticky toffee pudding and just couldn't help myself. This was my favorite course by far. Accompanied by Chantilly cream the cake was wonderful, with a rich sticky sauce. Utterly scrumptious.

Needless to say after this feast we skipped dinner. Any more and we would be fit to burst. Knowing that the produce was of the highest quality was a treat, and the dishes were quite good, if a little under seasoned to our (probably cholesterol damned) taste buds. A very nice meal, with good service. Worth a gander.

P.S. I forgot to mention the wonderful, warm ciabatta they served at the start. Absolute bliss!

In 2007 Paul Wedgwood and his wife Lisa wanted to create their “Perfect Night Out” at Wedgwood the Restaurant, located on The Royal Mile, – friendly fine dining without the pretentiousness. It is not hard to see this has definitely been realised, you’ve only to ask the many diner and journalists that have endorsed it.

The menu, created by Paul, is heavily inspired from his regular trips around the world. The favourite dishes in the restaurant include Panko and black sesame crusted mullet or Pork belly, Diver caught scallops wrapped in caul fat. Paul is renowned for being creative in the kitchen using interesting wild herbs and salads which feature regularly on the menu especially at lunchtime. Many of these ingredients Paul forages himself.

A visit to Wedgwood is certainly not to be missed, and will be thoroughly enjoyed!

We had the Wee Tour of Scotland Tasting menu and it was amazing. Really interesting selection of wines that worked amazingly well indeed. Will be tracking them down to buy. Every dish was cooked to perfection, full of flavour and variety, made from high quality ingredients. Small restaurant with a nice, relaxed vibe. A delicious tasting menu showcasing some fresh local ingredients, cooked well and not trying to be overly fussy for the sake of it. The highlights for me were the pork belly and scallops. A comfortable dining room and generally decent service, though it took a while to warm to our waitress who was quite cold on arrival, almost bordering rude - it also felt like there were some unresolved issues between the wait staff but they tried to keep it behind the scenes. This is mostly the reason for knocking off a star. We were seated close to the door which was quite distracting with the traffic in and out but was fine otherwise. A good wine pairing too, will certainly recommend if you’re looking for a nice evening trying some fantastic local produce.

It was a lovely 3-course lunch at Wedgwood on our wedding anniversary. Great also that we could walk in. We were initially worried that we won’t be full, but we were both tummy full at the end of the 3rd course. Indeed, the ingredients were fresh (Hake fillet, chicken breast). I would have preferred if the peas come mashed or it was another vegetable choice with the fish. The berries parfait dessert was my favourite!

The food is 100/100, the quality of the ingredients and the detail being put to the food is amazing. The only room for improvement is the service: the staff are attentive and friendly, however they explain the ingredients super fast and drop food on the table multiple times when collecting plates, which feels a bit casual and unprofessional. Overall this restaurant is definitely a gem worth visiting again!

The day prior had been my birthday but I was traveling all day and didn't get to enjoy it. The staff was lovely and when I left the food and wine up to the hostess/owner kept bringing hit after hit. This restaurant is very unique. They used local ingredients and made them to distinctive dishes. (At least I never had something like that before) I especially love the blend of chocolate and salty ice cream. Pigeon breast was so cool. The staff was friendly and helpful and the place was cozy. However the portion wasn’t large and the price was a bit high for me (even the lunch menu which was cheaper). Still, I would recommend to someone looking for an interesting yet a bit luxurious Scottish experience other than fish & chips, whisky and haggis 🤣 Remember to book in advance!

We did the foraging tour with Chef Paul Wedgwood and then went back to the restaurant for a 7 course meal. The experience was excellent and recommend it for the wild foraging novice. We foraged about 50 -60 different plants in the forest, marshes and the sea tasting the different species along the way. Paul explained how each plant tasted and recommended how to cook them. It was great education day out and then tasting delicious food beautifully presented in the restaurant situated in the Royal mile.
