Mary's is as good or better than Vivoli in Florence; as good as any gelato I've ever had. The shop--staff and product--exude fun and joy. Skip the castle and just admire the view of it while enjoying a gelato at Mary's Milk Bar.
A must visit when in Edinburgh! Fantastic fresh & interesting gelato flavours. Staff are great at recommending combinations to try. Lovely to sit and eat in the shadows of Edinburgh castle.
Must visit for ice creams . Super taste and very generous helping of scoop. If you have kids they will love it . If there is one place to go for ice creams ensure this is it
absolutely worth the queue! Salted caramel flavor is heavenly and the staff is great. A must-do for a sunny day.
Didn't try the chocolate but it looks great.
The most amazing, creamy, cooling, scrumptious and sweet centered ice cream to be found in Edinburgh. Mary herself makes fresh flavours every day that are often bizarre and unique yet infinitely better than you could ever imagine. My favourite flavour so far is peaches and cream but everything else has also been delightful. I only wasn't a fan of the lemon sorbet, because the texture of the ice cream in general is much more enjoyable. A must try after a walk around the castle in summer or even when you want to dream of warmer days during the long gray winter!
The best ambience to be ever asked for. Many recommendations of this place is what bought me here. I forgot to take a picture of the ice cream which is very stupid but the interior is well done.
Mary's iced cream flavours are always delightful, even in the cold cloudy Edinburgh. On picture is their Milk Chocolate with Lavender, offering a soft lavender fragrant and milk chocolate iced cream that's neither tasted like perfume nor feeling too strong. Also try their Hot Chocolate topped with Milk Iced Cream, it's her signature.

Went here twice, loved their ice cream and hot choco float! Even before arriving in Edinburgh, I already heard all those positive reviews about Mary's Milk Bar. And when I finally got a chance to go there, they really live up to my expectation! Located in the middle of Grassmarket and have this amazing view of Edinburgh Castle, Mary's Milk Bar must be on your list! :)
Cute little place with such good gelato! I had the raspberry and liked it so much I had two cones of it (I know, I'm insane). A definite must when in Edinburgh!
Cute little cafe in a lovely location, friendly staff and delicious hot chocolate floats (rich hot chocolate with a scoop of your choice of specialty ice cream). Not cheap, but definitely something to try.
SO SO GOOD!
I heard of this place courtesy buzzfeed and it delivered with aplomb. Hot chocolate and gelato floats are their specialty. I had a milk hot chocolate and orange float with peanut butter ice cream and it was utterly divine
Quite frankly, the best ice cream you can find in Edinburgh. So creamy and full of flavour, the perfect thing to have on a 'surprise' warm day in Edinburgh or even on a cold miserable day when you need cheering up. They also do gelato floats which sound and look pretty wonderful. It can be a quite busy during lunch time and the weekends but trust me, it's worth it!
Have you lived the last few years as a disheveled wreck of a human being, your only solace stuffing your face full of Ben and Jerry's whilst watching increasing dire reality T.V?
Well I've got good news for you. There is better ice cream out there than Ben and Jerry's.
Ok, we're going in at the deep end. Hold your breath. EARL GREY ICE CREAM. That's right, it ruddy marvelous and vastly superior to its tepid tea form. But Mary's doesn't stop at Earl Grey, there are different flavours available every day, I've been lucky enough to stumble in when they were doing Whisky and ginger. I don't know if there's some form of witchcraft going on but it should not be possible to make ice cream this good.
I went to a private tasting and talk at Marys milk bar last night and it was brilliant! Mary discusses all things ice cream and you get to try a lot of ice cream! U basically have free reign over it. Would recommend it to anyone. Also it is top class ice cream the lemon curd and almond is one of the best ice creams I have ever tasted!
Once I've tried the Hot Chocolate Float, I swear there would be no other hot chocolate that's going to beat this one!!! I ordered the Dark Chocolate & Seasalt with Salted Caramel gelato on top. It was heaven! I'm not being over-rated about Mary's but this is the best sweet tooth addiction I have ever been to. And do not miss all the flavors of the Gelato. Salted Caramel and Earl Grey are my favs. It worths the wait in the long queue and I'm coming back for it. Love!
This place is definitely an already discovered hidden gem! It's so busy now during the summer. Good for them! ;) I only had ice cream from Mary's but it is probably one of the best ice creams I've had in Edinburgh. The queues can be a bit annoying but if you wait you'll get your sweet treat and you'll love it!
As much as I hate to say, I've avoided Mary's during the Festival. I'm not into huge queues and that's what happens at Mary's during the silly season. Fantastic for her, but for us regulars, not so good. I look forward to heading back once Edinburgh has unlaced her Fringe corset and then she can begin to breathe again. Having said that I did have a sneaky wee affogato just before the mayhem. I stuck with the traditional way of having this Italian delight, a simple milk ice cream with rich, dark espresso. I love the ritual of pouring the coffee over the silky gelato, watching the way it melts as the rich brew swirls around. Sometimes it's the simple things that bring the most pleasure.
Getting rave reviews and located in heart of Grassmarket it isn't surprising they needed a member of staff on 'queue duty' right up the steps and round the corner. Short wait later and we were rewarded with creamy delicious cones and tubs as good as any gelato I sampled in Italy. It's cute and cosy but a bigger space and more seating would be welcome too!
is Mary’s Milk Bar worth the hype? You bet it is. Her ice cream is incredible. I probably won’t go again until the festival/Buzzfeed madness has quietened down, but I will definitely return once the colder months draw in to indulge in one of her fantastic hot chocolates!
i love Mary's Milk Bar - you can tell their gelato is made with high-quality ingredients, and they have some really unique flavour combinations. Honey & lavender, earl grey tea, Thai iced tea, and strawberry & black pepper sorbet are a few delicious flavours I've sampled!
If you're looking for a way to brighten up your weekend, Mary is your girl! Mary's Milk Bar makes ice cream suitable for all types of weather with their hot chocolate floats.
We have been trying to visit here for so long but it always seems to be closed when we try. Luckily we managed to make it straight after work this week.
I have read so many reviews on Mary's Milk Bar that I had high hopes, and I was certainly not disappointed. Needless to say, it was a rainy day in Edinburgh, so I opted for the hot chocolate float. You get to choose your hot chocolate and the ice cream you would like; I chose dark hot chocolate with sea salt, and milk ice cream. It was amazing!
There was 4 of us there and everyone else opted for ice cream, they each had different flavours, and they were all delicious.
The staff are great, very friendly and the interior is lovely inside. It's fantastic to know that no matter the weather there is somewhere we can get our ice cream fix!
Best ice cream in the city. You can tell its really well made and worth the money. Although they don't have as big a range of flavours as I was expecting. They also do amazing looking hot chocolates, definitely going to go back and try one!
Room With a View. This gelato, sorbet and truffle bar opened today and is located at the bottom of the Grassmarket. It has one of the best views of Edinburgh Castle from its front door. The interior is a traditional art deco style and is easy on the eye. I tried a couple of gelatos and they were delightful. Not too sweet and very satisfying. The owners were enthusiastic and friendly and I enjoyed my visit. I was only the second customer and I hope they have many more.
I haven't had gelato that tastes like original Italian gelato since I've been to Italy. So the fact that this ice cream tastes a lot like the kind I had back then, does say a lot about it. Its a really small place so it makes sense that I didn't really have space to move around indoors. But what really annoyed me is the that my "scoop" of Ice cream just about reached the tip of the cone and looked terrible, not picture worthy at all (but I still clicked a picture) and there was almost no Ice cream midway through the cone. But it was rich, high quality gelato so I guess I'll live with it.
I've heard so many people raving about this place that it had a lot to live up to. I fear the hype ruined it for me somewhat.
It's a small place, you'd be lucky to seat ten people and a queue of six makes it feel packed. Luckily, most are there to take away so the turnover is fast. The quirky decor is nice, but I feel like it's not quite finished - although the number of customers madly snapping away suggests I may be too picky...
The selection of ice creams is very interesting, not quite dangerously experimental but certainly more exciting than Edinburgh usually gets - white chocolate, chilli and lime is a remarkable success! Although I felt that the gelato was perhaps a little warm on serving, I usually expect it to be sloppy after a few minutes in front of me, anyone who can do a good liquorice gets a seat in my dream dinner party. Nice choice of hot and cold drinks (note to self: next time, milkshakes!), small but delicious hot chocolates balance the chilled treats well.
On balance, it's thoroughly pleasant and well worth a visit, assuming you like ice cream.
When it comes to ice cream and milkshake Mary's Milk Bar is the place to be. Fresh ice cream and different flavours . I love the feeling of the place and it has lovely staff.
Ice-cream is one of my ultimate comfort foods and while there's no bad day to have it, on a sunny day if I'm near the Grassmarket it's hard to resist a trip here. Mary herself is usually behind the counter with a smile, suggesting good combinations of her often unusual flavours.
Try the hot chocolate float (a scoop of ice-cream in one of three hot chocolate flavours) for a delicious contrast between hot and cold. Pictured is the white hot chocolate with cardamom served with a scoop of salted caramel ice-cream. Mmm...
My one criticism is that I think sometimes the flavours are just too subtle.
This charming Gelato shop serves a range of yes, Gelato as well as hot chocolates, milk shakes and a selection of handmade chocolates. The decor manages to pull off shabby-chic retro without the hipster try-hardness that often comes it. The two ladies behind the counter are extremely helpful and let me try a range of Gelatos (their seemed to be a lot of flower inspired flavours that day including rose and lavender and honey) followed with snippets of information on the different ice creams, before I finally settled on a "Milk" milkshake. While not the most adventurous of choices it was absolutely delicious. The milkshake was extremely dense and the flavour, for lack of a better word, very milky.
The lady in front of me opted for a hot chocolate which came with a massive scoop of rose flavoured gelato and looked and smellled absolutely delicious. I will definitely be back to try out some of their other delights!
Mary's Milk Bar serves up the best ice cream in Old Town, and some of the best in Edinburgh. It opened just last year but has become a favourite haunt of many since it's also conveniently located in Grassmarket. They make all of their ice cream in-house, and they are continually creating new great flavours.
Mary's Milk Bar just has a few tables and seats inside, but when I last visited on a sunny day during the Fringe it was perfect to take our ice creams outside and sit in the Grassmarket with views of the Castle. A visit here made my day off even more enjoyable.
Nestled within the cobbled streets of the grass market area of Edinburgh lies Mary's milk bar, a real hidden gem of the city. This little cafe serves gelato, hot drinks and usually has a display of beautiful chocolates too.
The best thing here is the hot chocolate, where they literally melt a bar of chocolate into milk! So luxurious and decadent but exactly what you need on a cold day. When I went, they had a dark chocolate and sea salt one, just divine! Make sure you stop off here if you are in the city.
I love everything about this little place! Mary’s Milk Bar has the loveliest staff, the cutest shop, such a unique menu, and some of the best hot chocolate I’ve ever tasted. I would highly recommend getting their hot chocolate float (I had it with pistachio ice cream and it was incredible).
This is by far the best pistachio ice cream I’ve ever had!! I discovered true pistachio ice cream while travelling in Italy thinking I would never find a similar one and I’m so glad I was wrong! I wish they did it everyday but you need to check their socials to see if they have it, 100% recommended!
They are also so lovely and remember you once you’ve been there a couple of times, love it!
You can also get a brick to have on your freezer if your favourite flavour is not there often!
Best gelato in town. Been going for 2 years now, I'd be out in peak winter to have it
Seasonal flavors give a unique experience each time. I recommend anything you haven't seen before, because I trust them to do it well
Shop workers are so friendly.
Grassmarket is also such a pretty place, so its worth going and hanging out.
I enjoyed in those ice creams. You can really tell it is freshly made and it has so rich texture and flavour. Sometimes there is a queue but def worth a bit of wait. Don’t miss out this one on your visit to Edinburgh!

Looking for something sweet I noticed a line outside Mary's Milk Bar, this intrigued me. The line wasn't too bad about 5-10 min. However, a line at any eatery usually shows great food is worth waiting for. This hypothesis proves correct with Mary's Milk Bar. My son had Salted Caramel in a cup and I had Salted Caramel and Dark Chocolate in a cone. We were both very happy with our decision and will definitely be back for more. They also have other sweet goodies in the store for sale. Prices are fair, staff is friendly and dress is casual.
Best ice cream shop in Edinburgh. Emphasis on the CREAMY! Staff are super nice and the line moves quickly. Perfect for Beyonce, there are some vegan options too. You won't be disappointed.
can’t believe how amazing their gelatos were!!! They have a variety of flavours from classic flavours like dark chocolate to adventurous options like Zabaione and bitter chinnotto! No matter the choice of flavours, it was a scoop of pure joy, they absolutely do not disappoint!
I’ve tried a few ice-cream shops in Edinburgh and this is THE BEST I’ve found! Creamy, yummy ice-cream. Recommend the peach and cinnamon. Even if there is a line out the front, it moves quickly. Staff we’re very friendly and a cute interior.
Amazing ice cream! Long line outside but moves quickly. Very interesting flavours and the menu changes daily. Mango cumin..saffron rhubarb…peanut butter paparika. Didn’t know mango and cumin could taste good together but it does. Lives up to the hype, great ice cream.
Excellent ice cream! The texture and flavors were amazing. Be prepared to wait in line for 20-30 minutes for it. You can sample one flavor per person and the menu is very limited, though has both dairy and non-dairy options!
