We travelled to Edinburgh from Hastings for a mini break. Having done some research decided to come here for our first evening as wanted an informal meal for our first night and had read the reviews here. Pickles didn't disappoint, in fact it even surpassed our expectations. Such a simple concept - bread, meat and cheese but executed so well. Its probably best that it isn't nearer as would be here all the time!
We went to this place following the several reviews written in Tripadvisor, and certainly the experience fulfilled all expectations! You feel at home with the excellent service provided, meat and cheese platter is wonderful, particularly the Scottish extra-matured cheddar cheese, and the different wine options are also excellent. Do not miss this place, especially if you want to get rid of the crowds surrounding the Royal Mile after a day of intensive walking through this wonderful city.
Fantastic little venue! Visited here after a friend took us one evening. We ordered the Mediterranean meat platter to share and boy did we need to share it! I think there had been half a pig on this board and every bit of it was delicious! We even tried to order the pate at the beginning and was advised (thank goodness) by the waitress that we might have been over zealous with the food! Brilliant service and great atmosphere. Would return again on an empty stomach! Ps if you’re into your cheese you’re in for a treat!
We've been meaning to do a cheese platter for while, as we never find enough room to manage that amount of cheese at the end of a meal. I had heard good things about the platters on offer at Pickles of Broughton Street so we finally went to try the place out. Set in the basement below L'escargot Bleu, Pickles has a pretty little outdoor space for al fresco dining (with added outdoor heaters it seems, as there were customers sat out there even at this time of year). We headed inside and managed to bag the last pair of seats available. The place is small but perfectly formed. Lots of wood and a smattering of fairy lights makes it a perfect place for feeling cosy. There are a small number of tables if you are intending to make a longer haul of it but there are also plenty of bar stools alongside narrower tables for you to sip on a drink whilst nibbling on a delightful platter.
I generally try to keep my Saturdays fairly quiet beyond perhaps a lunchtime trip to one of the Saturday markets, but I recently went on a bit of Saturday adventure with an action-packed, multi-stop grubcrawl extravaganza. I was joined by a large cast of revellers, most notably Our Beer Woman, her mother and her partner (Elly and Mark), and an extensive collection of friends (Jack, Donna, Sarah, Raymond, Ciara and Maurizio).
This is my favourite place for a catch up with friends. They have nice wine and you can have pate or cheese and meat platter. The service is always nice and the decor gives you a chilled home feeling. I love their chutney! Very good value for money!
I wasn't sure Pickles would be that satisying as a place for dinner but I was surprised by the generous portions of the few items of food they do offer - a large jar of wild boar pate, teeny gherkins, oatcakes, endless bread and delicious chutneys were more than enough (and at £7.50 pretty good value too).
But it would be great just for a drink or two (you can have a bottle of wine with a meat/cheese platter for an extra £13).
It's pretty small but cosy and quaint, full of tartan and shiny things and apparently gets crazy busy at weekends (there is some outside space too though).
The staff were really friendly and accommodating and the place has the feel of an old country pub/shop.
I really like Pickles. It's very cozy and well decorated. I had a mixed board with cheeses, cold cuts, olives, picked onions and tiny cutie pickles for £20. They also have deal with bottles of wine. Really worth the money.
My friend and I were out shopping in Edinburgh and fancied some wine and something light to eat. We had both heard great things about Pickles so decided to give it a try.
To start off we ordered duck pate, vension pate and olives. I am a big fan of pate and I wasn’t sure how the vension pate would taste but it was delicious as was the duck pate. We then followed this up with the cheese platter and a bottle of house white. They do several platters including cheese, meat and mixed, we opted for the cheese platter and it was very nice. For being so reasonably priced the wine was also delicious.
The staff were very friendly and left us to sit and chat in peace even after we had finished our food which was great. Everything was also very reasonably priced so I’ll definitely be back.
Was only there for a drink and loved it. They do this fantastic port of the month for just £1.50. Wide selection of alcohols, lovely atmosphere and friendly staff.
We're big cheese fans, so we had to come here as part of a birthday celebration trip. We went on a rainy Wednesday night, but it was still super chill and welcoming. The staff were friendly and quick. We went for the wine and cheeseboard combo (It’s the law!) – Scottish cheeses were creamy, easy and spot on, but they defeated us with their portion sizes! Probably because we asked for more bread – Such a lovely spot! 🎉🍷🧀
Absolutely wonderful wine bar and cheese, pate, and charcuterie place. The local Scottish cheese and ambiance makes this place really special. Service was outstanding makes you feel like a local. Wish I had a local like this.
Great authentic place, recommend if you are looking for a good atmosphere and fair prices. We had a bottle of amazing French wine from Bordeaux there, 32€ per bottle 🍇
The £20 cheese platter can easily be shared by more than 2 people! Some interesting wines available, so it's worth ordering your wine and platter (cheese or meat) separately so you're not limited to the house wine.
Stopped here twice during our trip to Edinburgh! We came back because one of the waiters Scott had recommended some places for us to visit during our travels! Great place to hang out and lovely people. Would highly recommend if you want a cozy place to have a drink and a bite!

Found this place on someone’s travel blog and had been looking forward to coming for weeks- and I was not let down!!! Great place with a cozy and friendly atmosphere, delicious cheeses/meats/breads (with great wine pairing!), and friendly service. Highly recommend
Brilliant. We've been hoping to visit for years but they don't take bookings. Managed a table and left with very full very happy bellies. It was delicious and generous. I'm very very keen to return.
We felt welcome immediately, loved the atmosphere and stuffed ourselves with delicious food and drinks. Great night!
What a happy place to stumble upon. We were just looking for a quick bite before a show. This place is SOOO cute! Awesome and friendly staff. Food and drink came quickly. We had the meat and cheese board. The 2 person meat and cheese is a lot of food! Would love to go again!
