Chosen to treat ourselves to evening tea at the Signet Library with a visit to Colonnades - an a truly huge and stylishly shocking area. Fastidious in quality, style and introduction, everything was rich and refined. This was as great an evening tea encounter as we'd had in any best lodging anyplace on the planet. Definitely justified even despite the cost (really not as terrible as I'd dreaded).

We booked three months in advance as this is such a popular venue with limited tables. My fourth visit, and it is consistently good. The surroundings are what sets the signet library apart from anyone else. The afternoon tea is the cherry on top - great quality food with a decent variety of teas and champagnes. Service is not rushed so have plenty of time when you visit. It is worth it though - a visit to the Signet library is always a special treat and memorable experience.

We had arrived in Edinburgh only a few hours earlier to visit the Festival and Military Tattoo. We enjoyed the walk through the crowds enjoying the early afternoon entertainment in the streets outside and absolutely loved the contrast between the exuberance and noise outside with the refinement and peace inside this wonderful room. We were allowed plenty of time to get settled and between courses in the wonderful cream tea. It was delicious and filling and the service carried out by friendly people who knew their stuff and obviously liked their job.

This is so far the best afternoon tea that we had, the place was beautiful, the service was excellent and the cakes were nice, the only downside was the savoury part on the middle tray, it wasn’t appetising as the goat cheese pie and the other one (pie rolls?) taste was very ordinary and the tofu seems only mixed with sweet chilli sauce. But we appreciate as they accepted us with dietary requirements without any booking first. Other than that 2, all were fabulous, we especially love how soothing the instrumental songs were, and the friendly and gracious service by all the staffs, we will definitely come back next time.
(The rating should be 4,5 but since zomato kept changing n not doing it anymore, i put it on 4)

I think it's pretty safe to say that any afternoon tea from now on will be no comparison to Colonnades. Fabulous service from the minute you walk in the door. Started off with an amuse bouche, then a selection of beautiful savoury dishes. Our festive treat included a game pie (WOW) a festive club sandwich, salmon profiterole, stuffing balls and a tasty apple wood cheese and chutney tart. Then came the sweets....all the delicious sweets! MUST TRY- you will not be disappointed!

Such a fantastic experience and afternoon. This was one of the best treats I have had in a long time, the venue, layout, staff everything was to perfection! The little treats from sandwiches to small tart-lets to scones and sorbet. This is something I recommend and will want to do again. Lovely helpful staff. Afternoon feeling like royalty.

If you like Afternoon Tea, the one at The Colonnades will leave you speechless. From the elegance of the room to the highest quality of each and everyone of the little treats you are about to taste, everything is perfect. It is also quite filling, so make sure you take your time to savour everything. If you can, have some champagne with it and the experience will be enhanced.

It has been just over a year and a half since we last visited The Signet Library in the heart of Edinburgh Old Town to attend the beautiful wedding of Ross and Vivienne. Step through the doors and you will notice just how  welcoming and calm it is inside in contrast to the bustling Royal Mile. The Lower Library where the reception was held has now been restored to its former grandeur and reopened under the name Colonnades, which is a reference to the ornate, classical columns that grace the building. The tables have mirrored surfaces and are set with the finest bespoke silverware, some of which are original to the building.

Afternoon tea is an extravagant treat and one of my favourite indulgences so I feel very excited to say that I may have found the best one in Edinburgh! There’s a real sense of occasion when you take Afternoon Tea at Colonnades, as you walk through the hall the main room opens up before you with beautiful Corinthian columns towering above diners, and old books lining the walls and galleries, handwoven carpets and mirrored tables reflecting the ceiling detail. It really does feel a very special and awe inspiring place for tea!

The recently opened Colonnades tea salon is part of Heritage Portfolio’s collection of stunning venues. Their afternoon tea will be served year round alongside light lunches and cakes, and the menu will change seasonally depending on what is available and often featuring produce grown by the team in their gardens in Leith.

Starting with the tea – there is a good selection on the menu with their own Signet blend too, not to mention coffee and alcoholic choices too. Fans of last year’s Pommery champagne bar will be relieved to hear there is still a huge choice of champagne and cocktails on the menu. As l love smoky drinks a Lapsang Souchong was my favourite, and as the refills are free I also tried a Russian Caravan blend with smelled like a summer evening by a campfire! The staff were so welcoming and friendly offering suggestions on the teas and patiently explaining every course. Our server was excellent and a fountain of knowledge on food and drinks, I believe he had previously worked at the Balmoral’s Palm Court and clearly loved his job.

The Colonnades afternoon tea is slightly different to many I have had as they have made as much effort with the many exciting savoury treats as the sweet with each being treated as a full course in its own right. The Savoury course arrived all on its own with three tiers, yes all three tiers, of beautifully presented goodies including an Aberdeen Angus mini burger on brioche bun, a flaky hot cheese tart with caramelised onions, fruity mini prawn cocktail with mango salsa and a Shetland Salmon tartare on oatcakes.

I thought it couldn’t get any better after the savouries but then the sweet course arrived with another three tiers of deliciousness! My favourites included an incredible mini lemon meringue tart, a passion fruit éclair and a mille feuille with Perthshire strawberries and grahams organic cream. They really did look and taste perfect! My partner is a chocolate fiend, you cant leave anything in the house and expect it still to be there the next day! He was head over heels in love with the Belgian chocolate and sea salted caramel tart. I always order the fruity puddings but I have to agree that this little treat was something special. If they were available to order I’d be there waiting to collect! The chocolate ganache was rich and creamy, the caramel just salty enough to balance the crunchy pastry tart case – Wow!
To finish we had a lovely little lemon sorbet and an espresso each, plus a little chocolate tart to take away – I think I went on about it a little too much to the waiter!

We can both say with complete honesty that this is the BEST Afternoon tea we have had in Edinburgh!

Again, Zomato had pulled a blinder and allowed myself and a friend to go and check out afternoon tea at the recently launched Colonnades based in the Signet Library on the Royal Mile. I have to say I was pretty excited about this, based on some of the photos I had seen from others who had been. The Signet Library is a beautiful room, long with high ceilings and lined with books. We were greeted by incredibly polite yet friendly staff, all whom were splendidly turned out. Although we had come for afternoon tea, we were able to peruse the menu not only to pick our choice of tea (or coffee if that floats your boat) but to see what other offerings they had. There were certainly some great options including sharing platters.

Having visited the previous incarnation of the Colonnades at the Signet Library, the Gran Caffe, on a number of occasions, I was interested to see the effects of their recent revamp. I popped along on a rainy lunchtime. The place has been getting a lot of coverage on blogs of late as their PR people, Pagoda Porter Novelli, organised a blogger event to show off their afternoon tea selection. As with most events of that type I couldn’t make it along, but given that fellow writer Danielle has her baking featured on the menu, I had to get along for lunch to try it.

At Edinburgh Foody, we've been impressed by the Heritage Collection's food at Modern Two and Portrait Café for some time. We've followed their work with the Signet Library too and afternoon tea there is an August tradition. So we were delighted to be invited to afternoon tea and a gin tasting at Colonnades, the new venue at the Signet Library

The library, always an elegant space, has had a make-over. There are new carpets, sparkling new silver ware and new tables, some using ornate columns originally part of the library's heating system as pedestals. They've kept the mirrored table tops that gave the space glamour, and the light colours that suited it so well.

The library is owned by the WS Society, an association of Scottish solicitors, and one of the oldest professional organisations in the world. The members, Writers of the Signet, were originally responsible for documents that were sealed with the royal seal, or signet. The association's symbol, the signet itself, and the letters WS appears not only on the carpets but also on the new silverware. The Signet Library is still a functioning library and the use of the association's symbols is a nice way to remind us of its history.

Before sitting down at our own shiny table, we tasted gin. Heritage Portfolio has worked with Edinburgh Gin to create gins infused with teas. They are a gentle reminder of the teas they are named for. Tonic brought out the citrus in Earl Grey while the spices in Chai Spice was most obvious in the neat dram. The gin made with the WS own signature blend was delicate and fresh. The in-house mixologist, Craig Bonner, will use this as a foundation for new cocktail creations.

After nosing and tasting gin, and catching up with friends in the foody community, we were ready for afternoon tea. I refreshed my palate with a glass of prosecco, one of several types of fizz available to put a bit of sparkle into your experience. To whet our appetites, we were offered choux puffs filled with cheese cream. A very nice amuse bouche.

Mini Aberdeen Angus burgers in brioche buns were fun and tasty. I enjoyed the smoked apple wood cheese tartlets with their crisp pastry and gentle celery crunch. Not everyone likes celery - I do! - but its presence here was subtle, not overbearing. The tomato and plum chutney added a sweet note. A tiny prawn cocktail with coriander and mango salsa was cute, crunchy and crisp, with a pleasant taste of the sea.

The middle tier contains a lovely goats cheese mousse in a cucumber cup, gin-infused salmon bound to an oatcake with a deliciously dill-flavoured cream cheese. The mini mozarella, tomato and basil spear was also lovely.

On the sandwich tray were traditional egg and cress on white bread, topped with half a quail egg and caviar, and Scottish ham on brown bread. Ham isn't my favourite thing, but the mustard mayo stopped it from being dry and an asparagus spear added contrast.

Enter the sweets

Afternoon tea isn't all about the sweets, but they are very important. The stand we were brought elicited an admiring 'oh!' from me. It looked impressive: a vide range of pretty delicacies.

This time we started at the bottom, with the scones, and worked our way up. Plump, fluffy plain and fruit scones with lashings of clotted cream and strawberry and Champagne jam is really a very nice way to start the sweet proceedings. It was gorgeous.

I enjoyed the passion fruit and mango éclair. The flavour was fresh and punchy - mango so easily disappears.

I got very excited about the rhubarb fool because rhubarb is one of my favourite things and something I don't eat nearly as much of as I should. The fool was lusciously smooth, beautifully tangy and came topped with compote and a dehydrated rhubarb wafer. I sincerely hope someone decides to start selling dehydrated rhubarb wafers by the 50 grams. A better snack I couldn't imagine. The entire sweet was perfect.

And talking of perfect things, let me move on to the Belgian chocolate and sea salted caramel tart. It's better than it sounds, and I know that to a lot of people that sounds amazingly good. While a fan of chocolate, I'm not a devotee, so I can normally take it or leave it. This tart, I cannot leave: it was wonderful, the balance of flavours just right, the pastry crisp and flaky, the caramel properly oozy and the chocolate full of dark chocolate notes. This is probably the best chocolate tart I've ever had.

The lemon meringue tart was also flawless. I loved the sweet meringue and the tart lemon filling. It's difficult to keep a demure, lady-like face and not bop up and down on the chair in glee when so many of yur favourite things are placed in front of you on one place. Especially when they are executed perfectly.

The mille feuille with cream and strawberries was great. The crisp pastry sheets are perfect vehicles for fresh, summery strawberries and there's nothing like cream to bring it all together.

The final temptation was a square of blood orange jelly (made with agar agar) which delivered a concentrated blood-orange flavour which cleansed the palate and was a very satisfying end to a cake stand that was even more impressive in the eating than it looked at first sight.

When Matthew Oates, the pastry chef, came to our table to say hello, I was almost too full and too awed with his skill to speak. An espresso woke me up from a pleasant cake-induced delirium and ended a very special evening.

Colonnades opens at 9 am for breakfast and also offers lunch. Afternoon tea can be booked from Noon onwards.

Wow what a glamourous venue! Stunning. The Library has had a swanky make-over to host the most elegant tea salon of days gone by.  I had the impression that everyone would be made to feel extra special and welcomed in. I certainly was. I enjoyed an astounding selection of savoury and sweet delights delivered to our table by the phenomenal Laura. She made us feel oh-so-special the whole night. I just wanted to sing 'Tell Laura I Love Her' all night. We did.

Our mirrored tables glistened with miniature works of art, peppered with endless pots of Wee Tea Company tea. Everything was absolutely breathtaking, the vegetarian selection was particularly perfect. I certainly did not feel I was missing anything from the 'normal' version at it's side. I was especially jubilant to discover they also had a gluten free menu, a grand excuse to return 'rapidement' with my Mum! (Or maybe just by myself)...

The setting was spectacularly grand, but amazingly comfortable, fit for royalty, celebrity and common folk alike. The food was unbelievable, with huge attention to flavours and detail. The chefs came bouncing over to speak to us at the table, they were almost as excited to have made everything as we were to eat it. What a treat. The drinks were simply divine. Above all the service was impeccable. All in all it was a magical experience at the Signet.

The Colonnades at the Signet Library is definitely the best afternoon tea in town.  Even more importantly, they do the best GLUTEN FREE afternoon tea too.  My tea looked pretty much the same as a "normal" one and tasted really good.  Mille Feuilles, sandwiches, chocolate pastry tart, everything was lovely.  This is a wonderful place for a real treat and you definitely won't be disappointed!  Coeliac tea lovers should go nowhere else!

Absolutely fantastic experience! This is not your average afternoon tea; the food plays on classic dishes and creates something unique from them. It was all delicious. Fantastic service; the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and they don't rush you to finish. It was just a great experience all round. The only thing I would change is being able to refer to a written menu of what was served, as if was hard to keep track of which item we were eating and what flavours to expect.

An exquisite afternoon tea in an amazing location and atmosphere. You're settled inside a historical and beautiful library. The savory and sweet selection is unique with some interesting flavours such as white chocolate and wasabi. I particularly enjoyed how quiet the setting was which lends itself to a lovely peaceful afternoon tea. The staff are professional and the service is perfect. They cater for allergies with care and ensure everyone is served properly. The average price is around £55 which I think for this level of service and quality is just right. I'm giving 5 stars for memorable event and overall recommend this place for afternoon teas. Given its central location, it is very accessible if you're visiting Edinburgh.

Having had the pleasure of visiting The Colonnades at the Signet Library multiple times, I have found that it remains one of my favourite spots for afternoon tea. Set in the historic and picturesque Signet Library, the elegant and sophisticated atmosphere provides a unique and memorable experience. The staff is friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu, making you feel welcomed and at ease. The attention to detail in the presentation is impressive, and everything is fresh and of the highest quality. It's clear that the chefs take great pride in their craft.

Excellent afternoon tea! It is definitely on the pricey side but in my opinion, we got our money's worth. It is 50GBP per person and it comes with your choice of unlimited tea or coffee and 3 trays of gourmet savories and sweets. We came around noon after we have worked an appetite after strolling around the Royal Mile for 3 hours with our guide. By the end of our tea time, we had struggled to finish everything on our trays! The food was presented and crafted beautifully, most of them were too pretty to eat! I ordered the Signet Library signature tea; my husband ordered the Darjeeling and both teas were excellent, they almost could give Kenyan tea a run for its money (emphasis on almost). The ambiance was also unparalleled- who would've have thought you can eat and drink in a place rich in historical significance?? The Colonnades is right next to St. Giles cathedral, right in the heart of the Royal Mile. I believe reservations are required; it is easy to do in their website. Although we saw plenty of empty tables when we came in around noon.

Oh my goodness what a special treat. Went for my 50th birthday and what a way to spend it. Lovely staff, I am dairy free and had a luxury afternoon tea in a 5 star hotel recently so I had high expectations. I have to so that this one exceeded the other. The attention to detail was absolutely outstanding and what an effort to make sure my food was still super tasty and very special. I have had many an afternoon tea but this is by far the best ever! Thank you for making my day so special, picture is just the sweet course I was too hungry to take a picture of the savoury sorry.😊❣️

This is one of the most sophisticated afternoon tea spots I have ever been. Situated in the historic Signet Library, it offers a spacious, and photogenic backdrop for quality and delicate food. Savouries and desserts came in two separated sets, and we were impressed by the well thought combination of flavours in each item, particularly those savoury ones. Worth the price as there would be a generous number of types complimented by great tea and top service. Only one disappointment though, the scones were fine yet not among the best we have had, otherwise the set would be perfect.

Quirky and elegant yet not too posh or stiff in terms of atmosphere. I fact one of our waiters was quite funny. Afternoon tea was amazing, especially the sweet varieties. Tea selection very good. It's pricey but worth it for a special occasion. Felt totally spoilt!

For me, this place rates much higher than some of the well known afternoon tea places in London. Everything tasted so fresh and tried three different teas during my visit. Afternoon tea here was an absolute dream. A family member gave us a voucher as a birthday gift when they heard we would be taking a trip to the UK. I am so thankful for that as this was one of my husband and I's favorite parts of the whole trip. It was wonderful to take a break from exploring the city and take part in this leisurely and delicious and exquisite tea experience! The library is absolutely gorgeous. The mushroom soup they served to start is a taste I will forever be hoping to find again. The food was delicious and so filling! We could barely make it through the desserts which were absolutely heavenly.
