Some of the best Italian food I’ve had while back in the UK. Went with my friend who goes every year for their anniversary as I felt like Italian food, and I wasn’t disappointed. All the staff were super friendly and welcoming, social distancing was in place and the food was cracking! Also, what a deal as they are on eat out to help out. Can’t wait to go back...
We got lucky as we went in early and got a table straight away for dinner. Service was so friendly and helpful, always checking on us and the staff singing along to the music. Food was simple, but tasted spectacular! Their homemade bread was delicious.
Never been before, but recommended. We had a great lunch cooked and served by lovely people. The blond lady in particular is a character. We had a great time. Thank you.
We were on our feet all day when we're came across this place, and it smelled fanatic.
Our waitress did a great job recommending the dishes: arancini (balls of risotto with mozzarella and fresh pear inside) for a starter, with ravioli with porcini mushrooms for my spouse and fettuccini with bolognese sauce for me.
The waitress also suggested very good wine pairings.
As an American, we also appreciated that the portions were reasonable, not the large sizes we're used to at home.
Overall, this was a nice, satisfying dinner at a reasonable price.
Been trying to book this restaurant for ages , finally got a table for 2 and realised why I failed previously trying to book a table for 6+. Its not the biggest restaurant but it is very good. Warm friendly atmosphere , attentive staff , good grub especially fish. Thoroughly recommend it but perhaps not for big family meals of 8+. Romantic though like the Italian restaurant in "Lady and the Tramp".

The food is excellent - it is one of the best Italian restaurants in town. Very authentic and the staff are extremely courteous and very nice! Good service and food - an overall very good experience.
Our first meal after a long journey up to Edinburgh and it was a great meal to kickstart our weekend. Staff were warm and friendly upon enterint and very attentive throughout the meal. Both dishes we ordered the pork cheeks and seafood linguine were perfectly cooked and presented. The seafood was both fresh and delicious and would highly recommend this restaurant if you're a fan of italian cuisine.
We made an online reservation 2 weeks in advance due to the high demand. The staff was very friendly and funny and since the place itself is small, the general atmosphere is quite intimate. The food was simply fantastic (even though I'm vegetarian and there were less options for me). It's perfect for couples looking for a memorable dinner.
As soon as I walked into Locanda De Gusti on Dalry Road I felt that I was taken back to Italy. Chef Rosario and his wife Maria aim to bring Naples to Edinburgh using local seasonal produce to create authentic Italian food. The food is all made daily so the menu is adapted to what seasonal produce is available. Locanda De Gusti is a small restaurant, with approximately 15 tables. Unfortunately there was a misunderstanding with our booking and there was not a table for us. We were told to come back 1.5 hours later.
We live pretty close to Locanda De Gusti and we've tried a few times to get a reservation here, but it has always been too last minute. Fortunately (and very luckily) we managed to get a table on Friday night, the first night of the Festival. Me and my boyfriend were really looking forward to this meal; Sam loves Italian food and we had heard a lot of great things.
The inside of Locanda De Gusti is so nice and quaint. It really feels like a restaurant in Italy, especially with the Moretti beer fridge. Our meal was at 7.15pm and all the tables were full when we arrived. We were seated straight away and gave our drinks order. When we were ready to order food we chose the potato gateaux to start, I opted for the whole fish of the day (which was sea bass), and Sam decided to have the shell fish linguini.
2 pieces of bread and a miniature pan of oil and balsamic vinegar were brought out. The bread was really nice but Sam really wanted another piece. We asked for extra and they brought out 2 more pieces, however it would have been nice to have been offered more rather than having to ask. The potato gateaux was amazing, I am so glad that we ordered it, the texture and flavours were great. It was also the perfect size for 2 people as it was a very generous portion. The sea bass was also delicious. It was cooked with oil, garlic, lemon and herbs, and it melted in my mouth. We decided to order dessert as they looked too good to miss; Sam ordered the tiramisu and I ordered the lemon pudding. The lemon pudding was fantastic! I wasn't sure if I would like it, but I would order it again in a heart beat.
The service was very friendly, which added to the great atmosphere. At times the service was slightly slow, but we were lucky to get a table so it didn't bother us to wait a bit longer to be attended too.
Locanda De Gusti is definitely the best Italian food I have had in Edinburgh.
Going alone to a restaurant sometimes makes you feel wonderful and if the restaurant is awesome then it makes your day. I went here and enjoyed a simple meal. The simplicity was almost the whole point. Excellent food very well cooked and served by friendly staff in lovely surroundings. Please try this place you will fall in love.
I met a few friends on a Saturday night for a lovely meal here. I had the grilled vegetables with mozzarella for the starter, which were plentiful, healthy, nicely presented and also very tasty. For the main I progressed on to the monkfish in a bean broth, which was excellent. The fish was perfectly cooked and the beans were flavourful and not too heavy. The red wine that was recommended was really excellent, and I had a good white wine with my main.
I ended the meal with a rich chocolate mousse. It was more of a chocolate pot than a mousse, but it was lovely. It was also very kind that the servers brought us cute mini bottles of amaretto for an excellent finish to the meal.
The food is excellent and the servers are extremely friendly and helpful. It is a lovely, family type of restaurant with homely decorations. It's not cheap but it's worth it.
Locanda de Gusti’s proprietor and chef, Rosario Sartore, has a passion for Italian food. He wants to introduce Edinburgh diners to real Italian food, specifically, the flavours of Naples. Southern Italian cuisine is about great ingredients, treated simply and cooked quickly. Last week, I was invited to Rosario’s new venue I got to sample a buffet of Italian delights.
The new premises are light and welcoming with an informal feel. It fits the restaurant’s slogan: honest, sincere, simple. Locanda de Gusti is a restaurant where generations can come together and enjoy each other’s company and good food. And what food!
As I mentioned, Rosario is from Naples and he cooks traditional Neapolitan food. Italy has many different regions and each one has its own style and special ingredients. Neapolitan cooking is Mediterranean in style, and can be healthy and light. It’s hot in the south so you don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen cooking up ragouts or stews, you just want fresh ingredients put together with a respectful touch. To demonstrate, Rosario and his team prepared two tables of food for us to try. A glass of prosecco in one hand, a plate of true Italian in the other: what could be better.
A taste of Italy
I tried a range of dishes, from plump prawns with peas and lemon, to an amazing dish of beans and squid. (I’m, coming back for the beans and squid. It was such a nice dish, creamy in texture with the flavour of land and sea in mouthful.) There were anrancini, whitebait, a selection of crostini, cold cuts, grilled fish, frittata, mussels, clams, marinated artichoke hearts, a lovely hearty barley salad with tomatoes and olives and more. I filled my plate full once, then came back and filled it with all new dishes. It was great. Each dish tasted great and the flavours were clean and distinct.
My companion for the evening was overcoming a roller derby injury and needed something to cheer her up. Rosario’s food definitely did that! Her favourite was the clams and the barley salad. The prawns and peas fight with the beans and squid for top dish status in my mind.
When we’d stuffed ourselves with savoury dishes, the cakes came out. Rosario’s wife, Maria, bakes the cakes and bread for the restaurant. The walnut cake we tried was lovely, moist, dense and very satisfying.
Full circle
Rosario used to run La Partenope in the unit on the corner opposite Locanda de Gusti. At the time, the space they are in now was a bakery, run my Maria. Christopher had breakfast there every Sunday for months. It’s great to see the couple back in Dalry and I hope that Locanda de Gusti will be a great success.
Locanda de Gusti translates roughly as “inn of flavour”, a good way to sum up Rosario’s ethos of good food and relaxed eating. I look forward to going back and spending an evening experiencing Neapolitan food with good friends, the way it should be enjoyed.
Having initially planned to return to Naples before we decided to give Scotland a go, we were thrilled to discover such a highly rated Neapolitan restaurant near our accommodations. Fortunately all expectations were exceeded with the generous portions of fresh seafood on offer, which were perfectly seasoned and cooked to emphasize the natural sweetness of the shellfish and crustaceans. Our servers were also warm and accommodating. We will certainly return when we are back in Edinburgh.

Had a meal here on Saturday and was one of the best (if not the best) meals I have had in a long time. The food was so fresh and full of flavour. Very well presented, and service was perfect and staff are very friendly and welcomin. Nice time between starters and mains also. Very reasonably priced for the quality of food. My partner is the fussiest eater in the world, and she loved it. Will definitely be back. Top marks.
Well where do I start from. The whole experience was like Napoli put into your plate. Food portions really really generous. Highly recommended. Tiny but a very intimate place for both couples and family. Decor as if you are sitting in your own kitchen but being served by waiting staff. Excellent place. Excellent selection of beers wines and spirits. Well done team 👏
Locanda de Gusti…
This is a place to definitely remember, a little piece of Italy on Edinburgh!.
You will start with ‘Rafael’ , just singing around and making you feel at nonna’s home by looking after you so well. In another hand you will have ‘Sara’ bring up her lovely charisma and charm. The service it’s just fantastic and that’s one of the big reasons we keep coming back. Big mention to those staff who always perform the best service and make you feel at home!
And lastly but not least, the food!, no words. Quantity, quality, and for the price, it’s really worthy.
This is a place you won’t be disappointed at all!.
We will definitely recommend it and we can’t even wait to come back!
Great staff with knowledge of the menu and pairings with the right drinks.
Seafood was fresh and tasted amazing. The Seafood platters were a perfect choice for a couple. A bit small but with a big heart! We had a group of nine.
Amazed by this great restaurant. The food is excellent. The people is sooo friendly. The chef sharing with us and taking care of every detail was the best part. Thank you for the great experience. I can only recommend it.
Just beautiful food. Best Italian I've had. Friendly service, buzzy atmosphere.
Just amazing.
We have been here for lunch and dinner, and both times were superb. The lunch menu was lovely, and reasonably priced, with no faults whatsoever. The octopus salad and the seafood platter were both highlights.
I'd like to say it's the best Italian restaurant in Edinburgh if you like sea food. My hometown is a coastal city like Edinburgh and today is my birthday, so I choose this lovely restaurant to have a dinner with my friend. The stuffs are super friendly (they can speak simple mandarin and teach me Italian lol). And about the food, they taste soo good as same as they looks like, impressive! Next time I'd like to try more.
Absolutely perfect service and food. Very authentic throughout the whole experience with ridiculous levels of pride and talent.
Additionally, I am a gluten free diner and the pasta available was phenomenal. Appreciate the extra effort made for dietary restrictions.
It was as though a local Italian restaurant was lifted out of Italy and placed in the centre of Edinburgh. Every dish was faultless and the staff were passionate. The bread salad was the star of the show.
The best Italian in Edinburgh, the food was delicious and super fresh. Service was perfect and every member of staff was so friendly and made the visit so personal. Highly recommend a visit and I cannot wait to come back!
Incredible Italian food in Edinburgh, I felt like we were transported to Naples. Best Italian in entire UK, better than any Italian restaurants in London.
The lobster and seafood pastas are to die for. The staff are really friendly too. Will definitely be back.
The best restaurant in Scotland and one of the best Italian restaurant on the world 🌎.
Typical Italian Restaurant atmosphere with little space and lively conversations. The food was not as good as expected when you look at the rating and the prices, but definitely good. The grilled fish was grilled too long, but it was quite a lot of fish on the plate, so you can´t really complain.
The restaurant is a real typical Italian style restaurant , the food is amazing , service professional and funny.
Don't look at the menu, just ask to the service what they suggest, you can trust in their choices.
The price are correct, I suggest to come and enjoy it
This place was amazing! The staff, the chef, everyone was so kind and warm. AND I had the best mushroom ravioli and tuna I’ve ever eaten. This place is perfection ❤️
Really enjoyed our meal here and service was very friendly and attentive. Would have given it 5 stars but I found the dishes slightly salty even though the flavors were delicious! Seafood were very fresh!
One of my favourite places to eat in Edinburgh. The platters are incredible, especially if you like seafood but want something different to the shellfish platters usually offered. The fish is so fresh and tasty. Staff are always SO lovely & attentive. It feels like eating at someone’s home, the hospitality is just wonderful.
Always pick this place as a go to when showing new people the city. Well worth a visit!
